My eyes hurt. Hell, all parts of my body hurt like hell. But I'm trying to endure it all, by acting like nothing could faze me.
“Jewel!” Star, the live-in maid Miguel employed, yelled my name the moment she entered the house. She banged the door behind her, almost deafening me with the sound. I can hear her footsteps as she rushed in. She sounded excited.“What's wrong?” I called out from the parlour where I was. I sat up on the couch and made certain not to wince. She only knows that my husband treats me like trash. I don't wish for her to know of the new development.“I got something for you.” She sat on the cushion next to me and rummaged through her handbag. “Tada!” She brought out an invitation card from her handbag and gave it to me. The way her eyes sparkled made me jealous.I gave her a once-over. Star is a beautiful woman with hair as blonde as mine, and blue eyes which were brighter than mine. However, compared to her, I'm nothing but a shell of myself."Take a look at what I gave you." She mouth gestured towards the card.“What's this?” I turned the golden card with my brows furrowed at it. “Is this your birthday card?” I gasped. “Don't tell me it's your wedding card.” My eyes nearly boggled out of their sockets.Star rolled her eyes at me. “This is an invitation to a ball!” She giggled. “It's a weekend masquerade ball!”“Like Cinderella's?” I arched a brow.“Was there a masquerade ball in Cinderella?” She tilted her head to the side. “I thought it was Barbie and the Three Musketeers?” She looked to be lost in thoughts as she wondered who among the cartoon characters attended as mask ball.“Whatever.” I waved her words off. “It has been a long time since I watched those cartoons.” I turned the card in my hand. It's not as if I was still a kid. I grew up faster than kids my age. My so-called husband made certain of that.“Will you love to attend?” She wriggled her brows as she tried so much not to grin. I can see how excited she is, from the sparkles in her eyes.“Me? You've got to be kidding me. I've not been out of the house for close to two years. How can I attend a ball?” I dropped the card on the table.Unlike her, I can't get excited. Not when I have a husband like Miguel. Getting excited is like digging a grave for myself.“I can help you with that if it pleases you.” She grinned. “It's a night party. I can help you sneak out of the house.” She wriggled her brows suggestively. "It will be fun," she giggled, making it seem like it was easy.I rolled my eyes at her words. “That's outrageous. There's no way I can be able to do that.” I scowled at her, “what if I get caught, how can I exempt myself from my husband's punishments?”I've gotten enough punishments to know that Miguel isn't someone to cross. He might wipe out my entire family if he so pleases to do so. He's like a madman with an insane character.“He won't catch you. There's no way for him to know of this. Trust on this, Jewel.” She took the card from the table I placed it on. “I've been thinking about this for a long time now, Jewel.”“About what?”“This. You can't stay in here until your death, Jewel. This might be the only opportunity you have to see the outside world. You are not doing anything wrong. It's a ball and not a club." She sighed, "I know how much you fear your husband, but you can't live your life this way."“I'm married, Star. Even if he doesn't acknowledge me as his wife, there is no way I can do something like this. What if he catches me?” I shivered at the thought of what he might likely do to me should I so much as step a foot out of the front door.“Haven't you noticed this, Jewel? Your husband doesn't return home most weekends.” She smirked. “Isn't that right?”I titled my head to the side. “That's true. Miguel most times works throughout the weekend.”And my mind always tells me there was a considerable possibility that my husband might be cheating on me with another woman. Though I don't think deeply about that, I couldn't help the fear of that being the truth.“Then what's stopping you from taking the opportunity to live a little?” She placed the card on my thighs. “You can go there early, and return early to avoid being caught. This way, your husband won't be able to know what's going on.If you don't tell, I'm not telling.” She winked, "we are in on this together.”“But…”“There's nothing like a but, Jewel. This is the only chance you might get. You might regret your decisions if you don't do this.”“I want to go to that party, but I don't want my husband to know I left the house when he specifically told me never to step my foot out the door.” I glanced at the card she gave to me. “Miguel might have my head if I step a foot out of the house.”As much as I would have loved to go out there and have fun, momentarily forgetting all I was passing through in the hands of someone who should have loved me more than life itself, I can't piss my husband off.Miguel laid down the rules, and as his wife, I'm obliged to obey them.“It's your decision, not mine, Jewel.” Star patted my hair. “I just want to help you out a bit. But if you don't want my help, you don't have to accept this.”“It's not that I don't want to go. I don't think it will work. Miguel is a sly man.”He knows everything. I don't think I can hide this from him even if I want.“But not as sly as this girl here.” She winked at me. “You have until Friday to decide on what to do. I'm always here when you need me.” She patted the invitation card. “This might be the gateway you need.”“Thank you. I will think about it.” I glanced at the invitation card.“You better do. Time awaits no man.”******I rushed downstairs at the sound of his car. Like I do most times, I stood next to the stairs until he entered the house.“Good evening.” I placed a fake smile on my face as I watched him stride towards me. My body still hurts from what we did yesterday. Smiling doesn't mean I've forgotten what he did.“Hmm.” He strode past me and headed upstairs towards his room.I expected him to ask me up like he did the day ago, but he didn't. He didn't even spare a glance my way as he strode up to his room.“How was your day?” I asked once more. This time, I made certain it was louder than last night's question.Miguel ignored me.He pretended as if no one spoke. His actions caused my left eye to sting. I blinked, to keep the tears at bay.Don't cry, Jewel.I sniffed. He's not worth it.This wasn't the first time something like this has happened. Hell, this happens almost every day. Yet, I couldn't help the tears that freely flowed down my face. I glanced up at him, and that strengthened my resolve. Star was right.I've got to live a little. My husband doesn't love me, so it doesn't matter whether I break his rules or not. It's still the same no matter what. After all, the only punishment he might give me is to have rough sex with me, and nothing else.I sauntered over to Star's room and knocked on her door.“Is it time to make dinner?” She groaned as she opened the door.“That's not why I'm here.” I fidgeted with the material of my gown.“What's wrong?”“I've decided,” I said without looking up at her.“On what?”“I will..... I will go to the party.” I finally peered up at her.“Wow!” She squealed like a schoolgirl. “That's wonderful!” She giggled, looking damned pleased with herself.“Keep your voice down.” I glanced towards the stairs. “He's upstairs and might hear you.”“Oops, sorry about that.” She apologized with a smile on her face. “I'm so happy that you made the right decision.”I nodded. “So, this Friday, then?”“You bet.” She grinned. “I will get everything ready for you.” Star winked at me. “Leave it to this expert.”Her words caused me to roll my eyes. “You sound more excited than me.”“What can I say? I'm happy for you!” She yelled.“Hush!” I looked upstairs, alarmed that my 'husband' might hear us.“Oh, oh.” She giggled.I stretched my muscles as I headed downstairs. Last night was a mess. I tossed and turned on the bed as thoughts of what I was going to do during the weekend, enveloped my mind. Not only that, but I was afraid of Miguel asking me to come to the room. It left me sleepless and nervous. Star was extremely jumpy, so I had to step in, by offering to make breakfast while she hastens to school, for her first-semester exam.“You never told me what you will love to wear for the ball." She glanced into the kitchen on her way to school.“Surprise me.”“Okay. See you when I return!”“Bite off your pencils!” I called out to her. “Thanks. I will spoil the computer!” She yelled. With Star gone, I focused on making breakfast. It has been a long since I last prepared a meal, so I decided to make a simple breakfast of waffles, pancakes, and oatmeal. I occasionally glanced back at the door, expecting my husband to come down the stairs any moment from now. I can almost imagine the expression on his fac
I checked the time for the fifth time. It was already eight O'clock, and my husband wasn't back yet. I glanced at the door, half hoping to see him trudge in, tired from working, but nothing happened. Star was long done with dinner, but I was still waiting for Miguel. Aside from Fridays, I always have dinner with Miguel. It's one of the God damned rules he made.I yawned. “What's keeping him today?” I checked the time once more. If only I had a cell phone, I would have given him a call, to check on him. Not that he would have answered. The front door opened. I instantly rose from the cushion I was sitting on and hastened to the door. Though I didn't get to hear the car when he returned, I was aware he was the only one who enters the house by this time. None of the guards does that. They knock on the door when they want to relay a message.Miguel stood by the door. Though he didn't look as tired as I envisioned, he seemed to have run his hand through his hair more than once. His
“It's time, Jewel!” Star rushed into the parlour. She plopped down next to me, with an excited grin on her face.“Time for what?” I tilted my head, confused by her words. “It's time to party!” She beamed. “It's time to rock the boat.”“Oh, it is?” I dropped the book I was reading with a sigh. “What's wrong?”“I… Uh… No, nothing is wrong. I was just lost in a fantasy world, that's why” I lied. I was only pretending to read the book. My mind was on how hard Miguel was on me last night. I glanced at my wrists. Though I used concealer on them, I can still see the red marks from when he gripped me so hard as he fucked me by the window. “Don't give me that bullshit. You are thinking of your husband, right?” She raised a brow at me.“Who told you that?” I furrowed my brows at her.“I can tell with just a glance.” She tugged me from the cushion I was sitting on. “Let's go. It's time to party! What you currently need is a party to cheer you up.”“You think? ““I don't think, love, I'm certa
I hastened toward the front door after the check had been made. There was no bouncer at the door, and I stood still as I wondered what I should do. This was my first time in a place like this, so I was confused about what to do. Should I open the door and walk in, or should I stand here until the door bouncer comes in?There should be a bouncer or butler, right? I glanced back at the guards at the gates, but none of them was watching me. Hmm.I stared at the door so long, that I seemed to stab holes into it. “Are you going in, or do you prefer staying outside?” Someone asked behind me.The voice startled me, and I almost threw the handbag I came with, on the ground. “Oh, my. Did I startle you?” The female asked once more. I slowly turned to face her without saying a word. Just like me, the female was putting on a long flowing gown. She had her red hair tied up in a butterfly ponytail, and her black mask complimented her silver gown. “So, what are you doing outside here?” She aske
His arm was sturdy. It was as if time stopped, the music ceased, and everything came to a standstill as I peered into the cold eyes of the male currently preventing my fall.Looking into his golden eyes, which were so much like my husband's, I felt warm and safe.“Be careful.” He said in a gruff voice. “You wouldn't want to hurt those legs of yours, will you?”Somehow, his voice sounded familiar. Yet, I couldn't pinpoint where I heard it. “What's wrong? Love my mask?” He asked when he noticed that I still had my focus on him.At his words, I blushed. The man was still holding me tight, yet he was indirectly accusing me of staring at him. “Can you help me up?” I gulped. “Oh, sorry.” He helped me stand.“No problem.” I smiled shyly before I glanced over at Baddy. She stood like a statue as she watched my saviour as if he were one of a kind dessert that happened to make an appearance just now.She didn't even bother sparing me a glance, since her entire focus was on the man.“Baddy!
I discreetly peered at Miguel, who had his entire focus on the Television. Occasionally, he would sigh, and that was all. I crossed my right leg over my left and leaned on the cushion as I tried not to pay much heed to my husband. Most times he will glance my way. Perhaps, he was checking if I was still watching the movie with him. Oh, stop looking at me.I wanted to say, but couldn't bring myself to do just that. There was no telling what my stony husband might do to me. I yawned after a long time of watching the boring movie without understanding anything from it.The lead actor was so ugly that they made the rest of the actors and actresses seem so bland. I stretched my taut muscles and rose from the cushion I was sitting on. “Where are you going to?” He raised his brows at me. “To have a nap.” I yawned once more to emphasize my point. “Are you through with the movie?” He asked in a gruff, indifferent tone. “I will pass,” I forced a smile as I glared at the TV.Who in this wo
Unlike the first day I came for the masquerade ball, Baddy was waiting outside for me. She was putting on a pink, shimmering gown that hit her below her knees. On her feet were a pair of black nude shoes that were so high, it made me wonder how she was able to walk in them, without breaking a leg.“Butterfly, you came!” She rushed towards me like an excited little kid. “Why? Weren't you expecting me to?” I pursed my lips. “Gosh! I love your new mask. It totally suits your name. You rock it!”“Thank you. My sister chose the mask. She's particular about things like this.”“I guess I will love that sister of yours.”“You won't love her when you—”A yelp escaped from my mouth when she tugged me forward. “I've been waiting for ages. Let's go party!” She hastened towards the front door. “It's time to have a mad dance and a dash for the desserts.” She tugged me towards the table that housed the most delicious desserts ever. Baddy and I stuffed our faces with enough desserts to last us a l
Miguel has been acting weird for the past two weeks now. He seems absent-minded most of the time, and that wasn't too difficult to notice since I'm the type who's observant of their surroundings. Though I wanted to ignore him, I couldn't do that. It's unlike him to ignore me. He hasn't called me to the room and he doesn't bother me as much as he did before. He just changed. “Is anything bothering you?” I softly asked him as I sat on the cushion opposite the one he was sitting on.“Do I look like a bothered person?” He snapped at me. His eyes narrowed until I couldn't see his pupils. “No, you don't.” I forced a smile, “I was just asking because I'm worried about you. That's all.”It's not as if I have another person to be worried about. He's the only one besides Star, who I'm close to —albeit not as close as we should be. “You're worried about me?” He scoffed. “Take that your worry, and shove it wherever suits you, I want nothing of that sort.” He narrowed his eyes at me. “You….”“
They stared at him, looking confused. “Mum, what's he doing here?” Jane asked, still looking at him. She only spared a look at me before she turned her entire focus on him. “Come on, babies.” Miguel motioned for them to come close to him. When they didn't go to him, he glanced up at me. “I thought you weren't coming back. I intended to relocate to the street, you live with them.” He smiled at me, "I have made the plans already. Implementing it was my next plan." “You stupid man!” I closed the distance between us and enveloped him in a hug. He rose from the ground and twirled me in the air. I chuckled at the feeling of being lifted by him. I felt light as he held me up like a baby. "Put me down!" I said in a voice that doesn't sound as commanding as it should. You can't blame me. Having him carry me is something I wish he can do all the time. “Mum, why are you hugging him?!” Jane shouted. While the others stared at me with shocked expressions on their faces.“Oh.” I chuckled as
“Is our new home that far?” Jill yawned, already tired of the ride. It's not a secret that my kids hate trips since we have been going on numerous trips since they were born. I chuckled at the impatient expression on her face. “It's not that far. Don't worry, we are almost there.”We would have been there long ago had I driven like before. But no, I had to be extra careful on the road to prevent my happiness from taking the upper hand and leading me to something I might regret. “Can you get an ice cream for us?” Jane rubbed her eyes. “I'm tired.”“Do you want an ice cream now or when we reach?” I glanced at them through the mirror. “Now!” they chorused together, not taking a moment to think. “Okay.”And like that, a journey that would have taken us an hour max, took us two hours and thirty minutes to arrive. I had to buy their favourite ice cream for them.I drove straight to Miguel's mansion. Luckily, he wasn't back by the time we arrived. His guards let me in as if it's natural
“And if it's not my charming friend.” Phil beamed as he sat opposite me. He looked like he rushed, to get here. I don't blame him because I just suddenly called and asked him to meet me. I returned from Miguel's house an hour ago, to make it in time to bring my kids home. “You took your time, didn't you?” I frowned at him, “I was intending to leave before you arrived.” I pretended like I was angry at him when I wasn't. “I'm sorry. There was something I needed to take care of. Don't be offended, okay?” He grinned.“Even if I want to be annoyed with you, I can't,” I pouted. “You are just too cute for me to be angry at you.”“See? I'm too handsome for you to be angry with me.” He placed both hands on his cheeks, “So, why did you call me here? I know it's not to drink coffee.” He glanced around at the almost empty café, “it's almost evening!”“I'm leaving.”“So soon? I only came — wait a minute, what do you mean by you are leaving?” He gaped at me, staring at me as if I had somehow lo
I sent my kids to school and decided to drive to work. When I left Miguel, I only contacted Nikki and Star. It was with their help that I got back on my feet until I met a kind old man. He was the CEO of Dabris, and he gave his shares and the company to me because he was too old to handle it, and his company was going bankrupt. That was how I became a CEO and each day, I work to prove that he can trust me. Though he's not in this world any more, I still have this need to make him proud of me. I got a notification on my phone, and I slid it up, to see a message. I frowned at the content. Why the hell will someone ask me to listen to the news?I packed my car to the side of the road, and switched the radio on, to the station the message spoke of.“Hello, everyone.” I was shocked when I recognized Miguel's voice. There is no way I won't recognize his voice, even through the radio. “So, I was a douche to my wife. I treated her badly, and I'm here to ask for forgiveness.....” There wa
I didn't hear from Miguel after a week. It was as if he had given up, which I'm grateful for. I stopped looking back as I left my house, trying to pretend like everything was normal when it wasn't. I know it will only be a matter of time before he starts disturbing, me once more. I hurried over to my children's school, packed my car and went over to their playground when I didn't see them waiting for me at the security office like they normally do.From afar, I saw my kids standing together, with — Miguel? With my heart beating fast, I hastened towards them at the sight of his familiar stature.No.This can't be happening. How did he enter the school without permission?God. I quickened my pace towards them.Miguel had his back on me, so he didn't see me until I reached where they were.“Jane, Jill, James!” I called out to them as I hurried towards them.“Mum!” They ran towards me at the sound of my voice. And that was when Miguel turned. He looked as shocked to see me as I was to
Phil took me back to the office before he returned to his office. I met him two years ago when he came for an interview. He was fun on our first meeting, and we clicked it off —as friends. I know he feels something for me, but I don't feel anything for him, and I have never led him on. He's aware that I don't do relationships, and I don't want anything about that. Ever since I left Miguel, I have stayed single, training my cute bundle of joys, who are all I have left after the messy relationship I had with Miguel. Though they remind me so much of him, I won't trade them for anything in the entire world because they are all I have. They are my life, and I will forever be grateful to Miguel for making me a mother. I drove to their school the moment it was four. I spent the last hours thinking of my stupid husband and the expression that was on his face when I left with Phil. “Mum!” Jill called out as she raced towards me. “Hey! Wait for me,” James shrieked, trying to keep up with
JewelI strode into his office for the first time in years. Nothing has changed. Aside from the new interior design, and change of colours. The shocked expression on Miguel's face was more than I comprehended. My mouth curved up in a smile, but I tampered with it. “Good morning, Mr Miguel,” I professionally smiled at him. “I trust my secretary filled you up on what I request for a partnership?” I strode over to one of the chairs in the boardroom, and sat on it, with my legs crossed, while Miguel stood shocked still staring at me like one who has seen a ghost. The years haven't been good for him. He looked older than ever, with his hair duller. There are dark lines under his eyes, making him look sleep-deprived.“Jewel?” He swallowed. “I'm afraid we are not that familiar with each other, Mr Miguel. I will prefer if you call me, Miss.” I smiled at him, “should we continue?” “Where have you been? I have sought for you throughout—” “I'm afraid you are mistaking me for someone else, M
MiguelIt has been five freaking years since Jewel left. I have tried to locate her, but haven't been successful. I tried every means possible to locate her, but it seemed like she disappeared into thin air. I ran a hand through my hair as I stared at the piles of files in front of me. For five years, I have buried myself in my work, trying to lessen the thoughts of my wife, but nothing seems to help. I'm always thinking of her, and the mistake I made those years ago. Back then, I knew that Pearl was lying, but I needed enough evidence against her. That was why I attempted to play to the beat of her music. However, it cost me my priceless jewel. If only I didn't do that. Had I not spoken those harsh words to her, she wouldn't have left me. She would have still been here with me. I stared at my window. Star and Nikki left the house a week after Jewel disappeared. Until now, they have not contacted me because they blamed me so much for what happened five years ago. And I take the b
I didn't go to school because my mind was filled with thoughts of my husband and the words he spoke to me last night. As much as I tried to, I couldn't forget the bite of those words. I stared into space as I tried not to think of it, but each minute, my mind kept on repeating those words as if it were trying to remind me of what a douche my husband is.I checked my phone as if I were expecting a call from him. But there was nothing. He didn't so much as send a message to me. I rolled on the bed and would have continued to think had it not been for my baby that decided it was time to eat. I slowly rose from the bed and walked out of my room, to get breakfast.“Aunt Star, your nephew wants to eat,” I cheerfully said when I entered the kitchen. Both Nikki and Star turned to look at me with puzzled expressions on their faces. The way they stared at me made it seem like they were wondering what was going on with me. “You're acting rather strange, Jewel. Could it be the pregnancy?” Sta
