Third eyes

Estella’s eyes flew from Diego to the door and she stared at him helplessly.

“Open the door,” she hissed at him.

“No. We’re having a discussion,” he said stubbornly.

She stared at him like he had just spoken a foreign language. She almost asked him if he was insane, but wisely bit back the words. He was still her boss and she still owed him a whole lot of money.

“The longer you take to open that door, the more she suspects that we’re up to something,” Estella explained in a low voice.

He shrugged, “so?”

Oh my Goodness, Estella thought. Diego was going to be the death of her.

“You’re going to get me in trouble, please,” she pleaded.

With an irritated look, he finally yanked the door open to reveal a suspicious-looking Blyce.

“What took you so long?” She snapped.

“Good morning, ma’am,” Estella greeted her quietly and tried to keep her head down and walk out of the room.

Blyce’s blue eyes moved to her and anger filled them, she grabbed Estella roughly and halted her escape, “Where do you think you’re going to? What are you doing here? What are the both of you doing here alone?”

“I don’t see how that-“ Diego began but was quickly interrupted by Estella.

“I was in charge of cleaning Mr. El Diablo’s room this morning and he called me to ask about a document he had left on the nightstand,” she lied hurriedly, hoping that Blyce would accept the lie.

The last thing Estella wanted was for Blyce to mark her as someone who was trying to snatch her man and put a target on her back. She didn’t want to get fired from this job, but neither did she want to become Mr. El Diablo’s side piece.

She was stuck in the middle of a rock and a hard place and she didn’t know what to do.

“What document?” Blyce asked, unconvinced.

Estella looked around the room and her gaze immediately landed on some documents peeking out from his briefcase.

“I took the liberty of putting them into his briefcase, ma’am.”

“Stop calling me ma’am,” Blyce snapped, “You’re making me feel old.”

“If you’re done interrogating her like a criminal,” Diego said coldly, “You can now explain what you’re doing here.”

Blyce pouted, her look turning playful, “Did you miss me?” She said in a silky voice and walked towards Diego, flinging her slender arms around his neck.

The sight left Estella feeling sick, she couldn’t believe she had slept with someone else’s man. It was something she had sworn she’d never do in her life. She felt dirty and horrible.

Like the worst sort of scum on earth.

She walked towards the door, but Blyce’s hard voice halted her again.

“Wait a minute,” she said, “Tell the cook to prepare for me my favorite and I want you to go to the stores and get me a new face cleanser. I’ve run out.”

Diego pushed Blyce away and his eyes locked with Estella’s over his girlfriend’s head.

Estella didn’t let herself stare at him for too long. He and Blyce made the perfect couple. She was a leggy blonde with big blue eyes and perfect skin. She looked like a runway model and she could crush Estella like a bug any day.

Estella wisely scurried away and went to do Blyce’s bidding. In the kitchen, another of the maids approached her looking curious.

“What was that?” The girl asked, “Are you in trouble or something?”

“No,” Estella said, “There was just a bit of a misunderstanding.”

The girl snorted in disbelief, “Really? Mr. El Diablo stormed in here and demanded your whereabouts like you had made away with his millions.”

“If I had,” Estella said in an even tone, “Don’t you think I’d be rotting behind bars by now.”

The girl shrugged, “One of the girls said she saw you run out of his room this morning.”

Estella forced herself to laugh, “That’s ridiculous. Mr. El Diablo doesn’t sleep with the hired help. That no fraternization clause is in capital letters in our employment contracts for a reason.”

“Right! I said the same thing. Anyway, nobody believes her,” the girl said, “Even though the boss is terrifying, he’s still impossibly hot, but we all know he’d never give any of us the time of the day. Especially now that that bitch is back.”

Estella immediately looked around to make sure nobody had overhead the other girl called the boss’s girlfriend a bitch.

“Are you crazy? You’re going to put us in trouble!”

“Nobody likes her anyway. Who the hell is going to rat us out?” The girl rolled her eyes, “She waltzed in here this morning like the sun rises because of her. Her nose is so high in the air, I don’t think she can see more than two feet in front of her.”

Estella covered her mouth to hide her giggle at the other girl’s drolled words.

“What does he even see in her anyway?”

“She’s a bombshell,” Estella said honestly, “Men would kill to have that kind of woman hanging off their arms at events. Wealthy men aren’t interested in anything but appearances.”

“He’d still cheat on her with someone that looks like Cinderella’s evil step-sister. Someone cheap and easily accessible.”

The words hit so close to home that Estella couldn’t even force herself to laugh. She was the evil step-sister in question. Was she cheap and accessible? Oh my Goodness, had she just been a convenience for him?

The thought made bile to rise in her throat but she beat back the urge to throw up.

“I – uh- I’ve got to get to the store,” she said, “Can you help me tell the cook that Miss Blyce wants her favorite.”

“Sure thing.”

As soon as the girl left the kitchen, Estella’s shoulders slumped and she let out the breath she didn’t know she had been holding. She placed a hand on her racing heart to calm herself.

She stilled as soon as she discovered that her locket was missing.

She searched through her memory and immediately recalled the feel of smooth metal sliding down her chest as Diego had trailed kisses down her skin.

Holy shit.

If one of the girls discovers her locket in Diego’s bed, she will be done for.
