Before Lexi could give me her reply, the door to my office opened, and I looked up with a frown. It was Felicity, and I felt annoyance seeing her standing right inside the door, fidgeting with her fingers in front of her as she looked at me with a look that was almost fearful.
“Sir, I came to apologize for interrupting your meeting today,” she said nervously.
I blew out a rough breath before trying to calm myself down. It was hard, trying not to glare at her, but she interrupted at the worst possible moment.
“You look like you’re busy,” Lexi said, taking the chance for escape.
“Please, just wait a moment. Can you sit down with Sam while I talk to her?”
She hesitated, and inside, I felt triumphant, though I didn’t let it show. Sam was doing his part, reaching out for her while making insistent noises to be carried. I felt stupid for forgetting to pack his lunch after I fed him this morning, just before I left the house, but I’d been in a hurry. It seemed like it was a good thing, though.
It didn’t take long for her to give into Sam’s silent demand, picking him up under his armpits and bringing him to her chest. She shot me a look, before turning around and going over to the sofa to sit down. I watched until they were settled, then my eyes landed on Felicity, who managed to look even more nervous.
With a gesture for her to follow, I headed for my desk and leaned back against it, while she came to stand in front of me with her head bowed down, fingers still fidgeting.
“Did my brother send you here?” I asked.
She jumped, then hurriedly shook her head. “No one sent me here, sir! But I was at the office when he walked in, so I knew the meeting was over, and he said not to walk in on a meeting again uninvited…”
Damn him.
Alec didn’t need to go that far. I was imposing on Felicity when I asked her to look after my son to begin with, so it wasn’t like I could blame her. Even when I’d anticipated being a father, suddenly finding myself the sole care taker of a baby wasn’t easy. If only I could have had my own secretary, I could have picked someone who knew how to take care of children, but I didn’t have one.
The reason my brother had a secretary, though he was in a lower position, was simply because he’d been to the office more than I had recently. I kept on top of things even before I graduated college, but after I got married, I started slowing down the visits, and came here less often after Sam was born.
Also, Alec wasn’t picky about who he worked with, unlike me. I had requirements if I was going to hire someone for a position or have someone from the company assigned to the position. I’d have to think about it eventually, but I didn’t plan to do all my work from the office for a while.
“You don’t have to worry about what happened, Felicity.”
She bit her lip. “And about your son… I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can look after him. I’ve just never done well around kids, and it was so sudden, so I didn’t have time to mentally prepare. If you need, I could ask around for someone that could watch him…”
“It’s fine. Really, you don’t have to worry about that.” My eyes drifted to Lexi, who was bouncing Sam on her lap, whispering something to him while she smiled, making him laugh. “I may have a solution to my problem, I won’t force you to take care of him for me.”
She tried her best not to look relieved, but she failed terribly.
“Was there anything else?” I asked. “Did my brother send you for something?”
“Oh! No, sir.”
“That will be all, then. Let Alec know I’ll be busy for the rest of the afternoon, if something comes up, he’ll have to take care of it for me.”
“Yes, sir.”
Hurriedly, she turned and left the room, and I turned back to Lexi. She hadn’t realized yet that Felicity was gone. All of her attention on Sam, and it made me smile. I didn’t alert her just yet, instead I took the time to look my fill of her.
She was hot. It was a surprise for me, not that she was attractive but that I thought she was. It it had been a while since I’d had such thoughts. When I first fell for Sam’s mom, she was the only woman I looked at. Even though it wasn’t easy, we made things between us work, and then we had Sam. After she passed away, I didn’t have time for those kinds of thoughts. It had been more than a year already, and this was the first time I was looking at a woman and thinking about sex.
I shook my head quickly to dispel my thoughts. Even though I’d gone two years without, somehow, it felt wrong to look at Lexi with such intentions, especially since I still couldn’t remember where I’d seen her before.
Well, whatever. Remembering wouldn’t change a thing. I was very particular about the people I let around my son. I didn’t have much choice when I left him with Felicity, but he seemed to absolutely love Lexi, and I liked her, too.
Maybe, I could get her to be his nanny for a while, until I could sort something permanent for him. As for her internship at the company, I didn’t need to be a psychic to know things weren’t going well. It would require some negotiation, but I was sure I could manage something for her to get her on board with the idea.
“Oh!” Lexi finally looked up and realized we were once again alone in the spacious office. She stood up, settling Sam on her hip. “Sorry, I didn’t realize she’d left already.”
She hurried over to me, a slight blush on her face when she realized I’d been watching her play with Sam.
“You didn’t give me an answer,” I said before she could try to leave again, pushing off my desk. “Let me know who your supervisor is. I’ll let them know not to expect you for a while and we can go for that coffee.
“Oh, um, but really, sir, there’s not need to do this…”
“Please,” I said simply. “I would like to talk to you, too, if you don’t mind, and I think it’ll be better if we don’t speak at the office.”
She immediately shut her mouth, then tentatively nodded.
I smiled and went to pick up my coat. “Good. Let’s go.”
I followed Carlton as we left his office, with him carrying his coat and the baby bag, and me holding Sam. Even though he’d slowed down his steps for me, I made sure to walk just behind him instead of beside him. Not only because I didn’t want the people we passed to get the wrong idea, but also because I found Carlton intimidating.Even when he smiled, it was hard not to think that way. He was my boss, he was a few years older, and his sudden interest in me made me nervous, even though I was really great with his son. I think I’d have handled it better if he’d just looked down on me and ignored me like Alec did, since I’d expected that ever since I heard he would be coming to the office.Carlton was stopped several times on his way by employees asking questions. Every time, he stopped and talked to them, but didn’t take even a minute before we were moving again. He hadn’t been in the office for long, maybe a week or even less, but he still commanded more trust from the staff when com
Lexi knew what I wanted from her–well, part of what I wanted from her–and it was obvious she wasn’t entirely on board with it. She hadn’t outright said no, though, and that was good enough for me.I took another sip of my black coffee, letting her have time to herself to think things through. I was confident I could convince her to take on the job, but I wanted her to do it willingly instead of through coercion, especially since I couldn’t say I wouldn’t get any ideas from hanging around her so much. I was attracted to her, I could admit to it. Seven years difference was a little more than I expected, but if anything happened later, I wanted this to be her decision or I’d just feel guilty for tricking her.My eyes never left her. She was obviously nervous, doing her best not to look directly at me for too long. Her eyes were either on her drink, on Sam, or flitting around the room, away from my general direction. I didn’t like that my presence made her so nervous, but she would get us
I checked the address on my phone to make sure I hadn’t gotten lost somewhere, then looked up at the building in front of me. Carlton had asked me to come in early to start my job properly, but now that I’d arrived, I was too scared to even go in.He lived in the penthouse of this large building, that had a guard at the entrance, and I could even see a reception desk through the glass doors. I’d mistaken it for a hotel, but the name in the text Carlton had sent me was definitely the same name on the building, so I knew I was at the right place. The security guard had glanced over at me a few times, since I was hovering outside looking up at the building, but he didn’t move to approach me or ask me to leave. I hesitated with my phone in my hand, wondering if I should just go in or what. If I could go to the elevator and just press the button for the pent house suite. Would the guy sitting behind the reception desk stop me? What if he didn’t believe I was here on invite?I was making my
The door to my office slammed closed, and I dropped my forehead into my hands with a groan.“What the fuck.”As if he heard me, the door opened again, and Alec walked back in.“Was there something else you forgot to say?” I asked, running a tired hand down my face.“We weren’t done talking.”I arched an eyebrow. “I wasn’t the one who walked out in the middle of the conversation.”He snorted. “You mean argument. I just wanted to let you know that I’m not compromising on this. Unlike some people, I still have work to do and I’m running myself into the ground for this company. I’ll be back after I’m done with my meeting.”Alec turned back around and left again, and I watched the door for a long moment. Then I let out a heavy breath and leaned back in my seat, closing my eyes.A week had passed. A week since that meeting, and since I convinced Lexi to babysit Sam for me. I came to the office every day and got back home late, and the only things that seemed to be happening was Alec and I f
I checked the time again and paced a little in the living room. I’d already put Sam to sleep, and it worried me that Carlton hadn’t arrived yet, when he usually got back in time to tuck Sam in bed.Where is he?He’d been staying out late more and more every day. I knew he had to be busy, he was a company president after all, but we hadn’t even talked about our deal and it had been a week already. I’d spent a few weeks at the company, and there was only so much time left before school reopened. I needed to learn as much as I could, as fast as I could. It’s hard to bring it up in the first place when he looks tired out every time he comes back, and this is the first time he’s been this late!Usually, I left for home by around seven so I wouldn’t get back too late. I’d cook dinner and eat early, then leave some for Carlton and take off after he got back. I’d eaten nearly two hours ago. I checked the time and cursed under my breath. It was nine already. I took the bus back, but the last
I heard my alarm go off, but that wasn’t what woke me up. Just before the alarm, I could hear Sam crying through the baby monitor. With a groan, I slipped out of bed and went to his room to pick him up.“Why are you crying, buddy?” I murmured. “Daddy’s here, so calm down, okay?”I brought him to my chest, holding him close as I rocked him gently to calm him. His wails petered out into sniffles as I soothed him. I did a quick diaper check, then carried him with me to the kitchen. I passed by the door to the guest bedroom, and my steps faltered for a moment. I stared at the door, then decided to leave it. If Lexi was still sleeping, then I wasn’t going to wake her up right then.“We can have some time, just the two of us, isn’t that right Sam. Let her rest properly.”When she got up, she’d have to divide her attention between Sam and what I planned to teach her, so it was going to be hard on her. Besides, since I’d been so busy with stuff at the office, and my arguments with my brother,
I’d only had coffee for breakfast, but I was too nervous to be hungry. With Sam gone, it was just me and Carlton in the penthouse.“We’ll be working in my home office,” Carlton said as he left the kitchen. “Give me thirty minutes to get showered and changed. I’ll leave the door open for you, so just come right in.” “Okay.”I watched him go, and the moment he was out of sight, I slumped against the counter, putting a hand over my beating heart. Anyway, I had thirty minutes to waste. I didn’t feel right, cooking in someone else’s kitchen while the owner was around, so I just got more coffee and toasted a couple slices of bread. I found some jelly to spread over the toast, and ate at the counter, making sure not to drop any crumbs on the floor. My thoughts kept trying to go out of hand, but I brought myself back to reality each time. So, what if we were alone? Carlton didn’t seem bothered by it at all. It was ridiculous that I felt attracted to a guy who didn’t even have the slightest
I glanced at Lexi out the corner of my eye as she mulled over the notes she’d taken, occasionally glancing up at the laptop screen. She was biting down on her lip, and I wondered if she even knew she was doing it. Against my will, my eyes dropped to her mouth, and I had to bite back a groan. She looked sexy like that, with her determined expression. She released her lip, and I felt my breath hitch. Her lower lip had darkened a pretty pink, wet from her saliva. I really wanted to kiss her. After a while, she blinked and looked up.“Do we continue now?” She asked, totally innocent, impossibly sexy.I took in a deep breath, a little surprised when it shuddered through my body. “Actually, I think we can use a break.”I knew I definitely did. My thoughts were going down a route they shouldn’t, and I couldn’t remember now why it was so wrong before. For the past few hours, I’d been trying my best not to be so aware of her, but it was impossible with her sitting so close, her expression comp
I should have been in school, but I was in my parents’ home instead. I’d decided to take a short break because morning sickness had kicked in, and I’d had to run out of class a couple times to find a bathroom so I could puke. Even if people wrote it off as a stomach bug, there were people that would put the clues together, and I didn’t want to be the subject of rumors.“Lexi?”“Coming Mom!”I washed my face in the bathroom, then went to the kitchen where Mom was cooking dinner. She looked like an older copy of me, only she was a couple inches taller than I was. She smiled over her shoulder at me as I walked into the kitchen.“Come here and tell me if there’s a smell that makes you sick.”I blushed. “Mom, you don’t have to go that far.”“My baby is going to have a baby! I’m super excited, but you need to take care of yourself. Finding out the foods that trigger your morning sickness, and what kind of foods you crave, will help you get through this phase immediately. I only had morning
I sat back on the desk in dad’s office. I wasn’t going to stay in for the whole day. Dad wasn’t in, either, but I could take a break from work after this, finally. If I’d thought everything that came before was difficult, I’d been so wrong. Investigating was one thing, but taking care of a problem I’d let get so big? Damn near impossible.I almost couldn’t believe I’d finally finished, but now, I was sure it wasn’t time for me to be in this office yet. Dad needed to come back, and I needed to do some more training before I could take over. After all, even if Alec was the one to do it all, because I was so caught up in my head, and in my own problems, I didn’t catch most of what he did, though I should have.Dad didn’t entirely agree with my decision, but he didn’t argue with me when I brought it up with him. Alec, for his part, was still running around the company like he owned the place, but thankfully, while I worked things out, he’d held back from creating trouble. I doubted it was
My heart was beating fast, in both excitement and anxiety. I was going out today with Carlton to have dinner. Unless some of the time at his apartment counted, when he would cook for me and I’d cook for him, then we’d eat together, we were going out on our first official date tonight. The trip to the park didn’t count, either, because Sam was with us, and he’d be with his grandparents for tonight.I walked out the bathroom after a shower, wrapped in a towel. I didn’t know where Carlton would be taking me for dinner, so I just looked through my closet and picked my best outfit. I quickly dried up then pulled on the clothes. I had a pair of silver sandals with a bit of heel that I didn’t wear often, because I didn’t like shoes with heels. I thought I looked good in the mirror. My phone rang, and I hurried over to the bed to pick it up. It was Carlton calling. My heart skipped a beat.“Hello?”“Lexi? Can you let me know if you’re about ready so we can go? I’m waiting for you outside.”“O
Dad sat behind the desk at his office for the first time in months. Just seeing him in that chair relaxed my heart a little, because some of this responsibility was off my shoulders. I’d done quite a bit of work up to now, and honestly, I was exhausted. Dad wasn’t ready to come back yet, not fully, but soon. At least he could help me out for now.Today wasn’t the best day to show just how weary I was, though. As soon as the door opened, I straightened up in my chair, even though I hadn’t relaxed since we walked into the office. I looked up to see Alec walking inside.“Alec,” Dad said. “Please, come in and sit down.”He didn’t sound nearly as impressed as he did the last time all three of us met together.Alec arched an eyebrow at seeing me there. I’d been out for the past three days finalizing things. A lot of the deals Alec took part in actually happened outside of the company, which was why it was hard to keep track of all of them. I’d managed to compile enough evidence, though, and
When I woke up in the morning, I was disappointed to open my eyes and find myself back in my apartment. I would have been back at Carlton’s penthouse, if only school hadn’t opened up again. I couldn’t put it off. Thankfully, though, because his dad was doing well enough, between him and his mom, they could handle taking care of Sam.I still wish I was there. There was nothing I could do, though. I slipped out of bed and went to take a quick shower then got changed. I picked up my phone to check out my schedule for the day. I had enough time to catch breakfast before my first class of the day, and I headed out. I’d been back for a few days already, and I hadn’t talked to Carlton much in that time. He was busy with his family, and I could hear the stress in his voice when we did talk, so I didn’t want to bother him.I was bothered, though.“Lexi!”I looked up at the call of my name to find my friend waving me over from a few feet away. I called her friend, but really, we were more like
Things at work weren’t getting any better. Alec’s deal was going ahead, and I still didn’t have information on it, even after two weeks. He outright ignored me when I wanted to talk to him, and he wasn’t even hiding that he was making deals without my permission anymore.People at the office were starting to talk and considering that kind of talk got to me fairly easily, I imagined they were losing respect for me at the office.I still had work to do, of course, but now, I mostly did it at home and let the people I was in contact with keep an eye on things at the office.Instead of soaking in misery, however, I was out on a date with Sam and Lexi at the park. She’d insisted on us having a picnic out, rather than stopping at a restaurant on the way, so I drove us there. Sam was in his baby seat at the back with the basket of food beside him, and Lexi took the shotgun seat.“Are we going to be getting ice cream today?” I teased.Lexi laughed. “With all the food we brought, will you even
I made sure I had everything I’d need with me, then picked up Sam.“Are you ready to go out, baby?”Sam didn’t say anything, sucking on his fingers, and I patted his hair.“We’re going to have a lot of fun in the park, okay? Daddy already said it’s fine to get you a little ice cream, and it’s such a nice day out.”A few weeks had passed, and it was already over a month since I started babysitting, and it had hit me that in all that time, unless Carlton’s mom came to take him, Sam didn’t leave the house that often. I was too afraid to just take him out, though, so I’d asked for permission, and Carlton said it was all right. So, for the first time, I was going to have a park date with Sam.There was a park not too far away, and Carlton had left me with some money so I could take a taxi there and back. I’d already called for one, and it was waiting for us downstairs. I had a driver’s license, so if I’d had a car, I could have just driven us there, but when Carlton offered to leave the ca
I looked up from my computer at Alec, who’d just walked into my office. I narrowed my eyes on him.“Is there something I can help you with?”“No, Carlton, you really can’t help me with anything. But Dad asked us to meet him for lunch today. I was wondering if you knew where he wanted to meet us?”I frowned. “What, he didn’t tell you?”Alec didn’t reply, and I took that to mean that he didn’t know. My frown deepened. I hoped Dad didn’t plan this, so we’d have to head over there together.“He sent it to me in a text. I’ll be heading out soon myself, so you can leave now if you want. You know dad will be there a few minutes late.”“Whatever. If you forget to send it, I’ll be back here.”I rolled my eyes and picked up my phone. I heard the office door open and close, and I knew he was gone. I looked through my texts to the message Dad had sent me this morning, saying that he wanted to see both me and Alec, and he’d cancel if either of us missed it. I ran a hand down my face, feeling stres
Mom had said she’d come at night, but she surprised me by coming earlier in the afternoon. Luckily, by the time she got back, Lexi and I had already finished lunch and cleaned up, and we were in the office doing some more learning, fully dressed.“Should I go to the room?” Lexi asked nervously. We stepped out of the office, but she didn’t move far from the doorway, staring at it as if it would bite her. I shook my head.“There’s no reason for you to hide. I’m sure Dad must have told her about you, and I planned to let her know you’re babysitting for me, anyway. Have you ever met her before?”“Well, Dad has, but she didn’t go to your dad’s office as much as you and your brother did, and I missed her at the hospital when I went with Dad to see how Ken was doing.”“You can meet her, then. Come on.”I headed for the door, with Lexi following slowly behind me. I opened the door, and Mom was there with Sam. He was standing while she held his hand, and in her other hand, she held a bag.“I b
