Lexi knew what I wanted from herwell, part of what I wanted from herand it was obvious she wasnt entirely on board with it. She hadnt outright said no, though, and that was good enough for me.

I took another sip of my black coffee, letting her have time to herself to think things through. I was confident I could convince her to take on the job, but I wanted her to do it willingly instead of through coercion, especially since I couldnt say I wouldnt get any ideas from hanging around her so much. I was attracted to her, I could admit to it. Seven years difference was a little more than I expected, but if anything happened later, I wanted this to be her decision or Id just feel guilty for tricking her.

My eyes never left her. She was obviously nervous, doing her best not to look directly at me for too long. Her eyes were either on her drink, on Sam, or flitting around the room, away from my general direction. I didnt like that my presence made her so nervous, but she would get used to me if she decided to take my offer.

Have you graduated yet?I asked.

She jumped and blinked up at me, before her gaze quickly returned to looking at Sam, who was still drinking his juice.

Um, not yet, sir, but Im not far off. Its only one more year, after summer is over.

I winced. Lexi, I might not remember you, but if we know each other, then theres no reason for the formalities.

Her cheeks blushed a light pink. Id noticed she did that often.

Youre my boss, though…”

And, at the moment, were not even at work. Im not talking to you as a subordinate. Please, just call me Carlton.

Okay,she murmured. Carlton.

I nodded in satisfaction, then gestured at her mug. You should drink up before your coffee gets cold, though its probably a little late for that, now. I can ask them to warm it up for you?

No, no! Its fine, I just forgot, and Sams about done with his juice, anyway.

The cup really was almost empty, and after a minute, hed finished it all. I felt a little guilty, because he must have been really hungry and thirsty. I shouldnt have forgotten to bring something for him, but it was a good thing he was old enough to drink juice and eat table food instead of just formula.

She set the empty cup down on the table and gently patted his back until he let out a burp. Then she settled him down on the bench beside her, where he lay quietly, eyes looking like they would fall closed any minute. She finally picked up her mug and started to drink. Nothing changed in her expression, although I was sure her drink must have gone cold already.

Since its about lunch, anyway, is there anything you want to eat?

Im fine, sirI mean, Carlton. You dont have to get me anything.

You need to eat something, though, and so do I. They make a really great salad, and Id planned to get that.

I looked around until I noticed Lisa, then raised my hand to call her over. She was carrying some dirty dishes, but she nodded and hurried off with them, coming to our table a minute later.

Is there something else I can get you?

I gestured to Lexis mug. Please warm her drink up for her. Wed also like to look at the menu again, please.

Right away.

She took the mug and went away with it before Lexi could say anything in protest. When she returned, she came back with two menus.

Ill be back to get your orders in a bit.

We sat in silence for a moment, and I was a little surprised when Lexi was the one to break it.

Why are you asking me, specifically, to do this? She asked, voice quiet. Im sure you could find someone more qualified for the job.

I think youd be perfect for it,I said honestly. See how Sam is right now? Hes not that way with everyone. I went through several babysitters before I finally landed on someone he liked, because even if there were some that I would approve of, Sam just couldnt seem to get used to them.

Your last babysitter was something special?

Yes. The other applicants all had experience, but there was something about her that kept Sam calm when he was with her, like he is with you. The pay isnt low, to begin with, so you would be well compensated.

She pursed her lips. How much is it?

I gave her the base price I gave to every babysitter Id offered the job, and her head snapped up, her eyes widening as she gaped at me.

Thatreally isnt a small amount, she breathed out.

I chuckled. Thats because I require the babysitter to stay at my home with Sam and look after him the whole day. Work is from morning to evening every weekday, and half days on the weekends. I think its fair. Now, why dont you decide what youll order?

Bringing up my menu, I looked through it, even though I knew exactly what I wanted. After giving her more info, she needed more time to mull things over. The money might sway her, since it was better than what she was getting from the company as an intern.

Lisa stopped by and took our orders, then went off with both menus.

So,I said, turning back to Lexi. You havent graduated yet, you have a while to go. Why are you in a hurry to look for an internship?

She blinked. Um, I just really needed a job because I needed the funds, but an internship at an actual company is still a good opportunity. My grades are already terrible, and I imagine itll be harder looking for a permanent position later.

I nodded in understanding. Ill rephrase my question. Why do you think you need an internship at the company very badly?

Lexi fidgeted, shifting slightly in her seat, adjusting Sam beside her, who looked like hed finally fallen asleep.

I, uh, I need to build experience for finance? She said, sounding unsure.

So, finance is your major, huh. And? Did you gain any experience in finance?

Her gaze shifted away as she squirmed some more in her seat. WellI did get to work in a finance office, but…”

But you havent done any work related to finance yet,I finished. Right?

How did you know?

Youre an intern, youre new, and you got in through connections. Id be surprised if you had, to be honest. Office politics arent easy to navigate. I know, because I took an internship at this company while I was still at the university level, and everyone knew who I was.

Really?She asked, eyes wide.

Really. Since I was the bosss son, they were nice to me to my face, but no one expected any real work from me. Alec went through the same. Of course, I still did my best in everything that I was told to do, but I do remember it wasnt easy. The internship positions at our company arent that many to begin with, which makes them hard to get into. Interns are either scouted, interviewed, or recommended by staff, but theres never a guarantee for who gets in, so if someone just walks in because they know they owner…”

Is that why people are hard on me at work? She asked as it dawned on her. Because I got something other people have to work hard for?

Partly. Dont let it bother you, though. A lot of people use connections to get ahead. Its a resource you either have or you dont, and you just happened to have it.

Even as I tried to console her, though, I knew it wouldnt work. Once she understood, her expression went pale. I was thinking of what I could say to make her feel better, but Lisa finally came by with our orders and laid them on the table, and I lost the moment. Lexi seemed distracted as she picked up her fork and poked at her food.

Maybe Im better off babysitting and not trying to get work experience, she murmured after a while.

Her voice was so quiet, and there was just enough noise in the café that if I hadnt been paying attention, I wouldnt have heard her.

Theres no reason to think that way.

She looked up. Its true, though, isnt it?

No, I dont believe that. Even if your grades arent the best, thats no reason to give up. While having good grades is good, its not all you need to be able to get a job. Thats why Im offering to help. You dont have to sell yourself short like that.

What exactly are you offering me here, Carlton?

I shrugged. Ill definitely make this worth your while. I was hoping we could help each other out, I didnt mean to make it sound so one-sided. Other than pay, Im sure theres something I can do to help you. For example, I can help you get the experience you need.

Youwill help me?

I chuckled. Dont sound so shocked, I said Id help, didnt I? And this is the one thing that would benefit you above anything. You have to be especially conscious in your last year, and what I can teach you can help you during classes, as well. I didnt major in finance, but I have plenty of experience, so I understand it well enough. I know it can be useful to you.

You mean, something like private coaching?

I thought for a second, then nodded. Yeah, something like that. How about it? Are you up for it?

She was looking right at me, her face serious as she deliberated. I let her have her time to think, waiting for her response. Then, her expression changed, settling with determination. She took in a deep breath and blew it out.

Okay, she said. I can do it.

I smiled, then held my hand out to her, and we shook on it.

Good. How soon can you start?

Immediately, she said quickly. Ill have to do something about my position at the company…”

Dont worry about it. I can deal with that for you. If youre done eating, we can go take care of that right now?

Of course,she said, nodding.

I didnt know what had changed in her, but I wasnt going to question it since I was getting what I wanted. I paid our bill, and we got up to leave. I watched as Lexi carefully shifted Sam in her arms as she stood and picked up her purse, and I smiled, sure Id made the right decision.

Im going to show you the ropes. As long as you understand what I can teach you, I promise youll be able to find a position somewhere.

I checked the address on my phone to make sure I hadn’t gotten lost somewhere, then looked up at the building in front of me. Carlton had asked me to come in early to start my job properly, but now that I’d arrived, I was too scared to even go in.He lived in the penthouse of this large building, that had a guard at the entrance, and I could even see a reception desk through the glass doors. I’d mistaken it for a hotel, but the name in the text Carlton had sent me was definitely the same name on the building, so I knew I was at the right place. The security guard had glanced over at me a few times, since I was hovering outside looking up at the building, but he didn’t move to approach me or ask me to leave. I hesitated with my phone in my hand, wondering if I should just go in or what. If I could go to the elevator and just press the button for the pent house suite. Would the guy sitting behind the reception desk stop me? What if he didn’t believe I was here on invite?I was making my

The door to my office slammed closed, and I dropped my forehead into my hands with a groan.“What the fuck.”As if he heard me, the door opened again, and Alec walked back in.“Was there something else you forgot to say?” I asked, running a tired hand down my face.“We weren’t done talking.”I arched an eyebrow. “I wasn’t the one who walked out in the middle of the conversation.”He snorted. “You mean argument. I just wanted to let you know that I’m not compromising on this. Unlike some people, I still have work to do and I’m running myself into the ground for this company. I’ll be back after I’m done with my meeting.”Alec turned back around and left again, and I watched the door for a long moment. Then I let out a heavy breath and leaned back in my seat, closing my eyes.A week had passed. A week since that meeting, and since I convinced Lexi to babysit Sam for me. I came to the office every day and got back home late, and the only things that seemed to be happening was Alec and I f

I checked the time again and paced a little in the living room. I’d already put Sam to sleep, and it worried me that Carlton hadn’t arrived yet, when he usually got back in time to tuck Sam in bed.Where is he?He’d been staying out late more and more every day. I knew he had to be busy, he was a company president after all, but we hadn’t even talked about our deal and it had been a week already. I’d spent a few weeks at the company, and there was only so much time left before school reopened. I needed to learn as much as I could, as fast as I could. It’s hard to bring it up in the first place when he looks tired out every time he comes back, and this is the first time he’s been this late!Usually, I left for home by around seven so I wouldn’t get back too late. I’d cook dinner and eat early, then leave some for Carlton and take off after he got back. I’d eaten nearly two hours ago. I checked the time and cursed under my breath. It was nine already. I took the bus back, but the last

I heard my alarm go off, but that wasn’t what woke me up. Just before the alarm, I could hear Sam crying through the baby monitor. With a groan, I slipped out of bed and went to his room to pick him up.“Why are you crying, buddy?” I murmured. “Daddy’s here, so calm down, okay?”I brought him to my chest, holding him close as I rocked him gently to calm him. His wails petered out into sniffles as I soothed him. I did a quick diaper check, then carried him with me to the kitchen. I passed by the door to the guest bedroom, and my steps faltered for a moment. I stared at the door, then decided to leave it. If Lexi was still sleeping, then I wasn’t going to wake her up right then.“We can have some time, just the two of us, isn’t that right Sam. Let her rest properly.”When she got up, she’d have to divide her attention between Sam and what I planned to teach her, so it was going to be hard on her. Besides, since I’d been so busy with stuff at the office, and my arguments with my brother,

I’d only had coffee for breakfast, but I was too nervous to be hungry. With Sam gone, it was just me and Carlton in the penthouse.“We’ll be working in my home office,” Carlton said as he left the kitchen. “Give me thirty minutes to get showered and changed. I’ll leave the door open for you, so just come right in.” “Okay.”I watched him go, and the moment he was out of sight, I slumped against the counter, putting a hand over my beating heart. Anyway, I had thirty minutes to waste. I didn’t feel right, cooking in someone else’s kitchen while the owner was around, so I just got more coffee and toasted a couple slices of bread. I found some jelly to spread over the toast, and ate at the counter, making sure not to drop any crumbs on the floor. My thoughts kept trying to go out of hand, but I brought myself back to reality each time. So, what if we were alone? Carlton didn’t seem bothered by it at all. It was ridiculous that I felt attracted to a guy who didn’t even have the slightest

I glanced at Lexi out the corner of my eye as she mulled over the notes she’d taken, occasionally glancing up at the laptop screen. She was biting down on her lip, and I wondered if she even knew she was doing it. Against my will, my eyes dropped to her mouth, and I had to bite back a groan. She looked sexy like that, with her determined expression. She released her lip, and I felt my breath hitch. Her lower lip had darkened a pretty pink, wet from her saliva. I really wanted to kiss her. After a while, she blinked and looked up.“Do we continue now?” She asked, totally innocent, impossibly sexy.I took in a deep breath, a little surprised when it shuddered through my body. “Actually, I think we can use a break.”I knew I definitely did. My thoughts were going down a route they shouldn’t, and I couldn’t remember now why it was so wrong before. For the past few hours, I’d been trying my best not to be so aware of her, but it was impossible with her sitting so close, her expression comp

I sat at the dining table, watching Carlton cook. He’d insisted on it, even though I’d offered, after we’d cleaned up and fixed our clothes. My face warmed just thinking about it, but my lips threatened to curl into a smile at the same time.Carlton glanced over his shoulder at me with a gentle smile. “I’m almost done. Just wait a little longer. It’s a lot later than I’d thought it would be…”I shrugged. “It’s fine. We were both pretty preoccupied.”My voice came out calm, but my face was burning. Carlton just chuckled and went back to his cooking.“To be honest, I was surprised when I realized you could cook,” I said after a minute. “Though I guess it should make sense, because you live on your own.”He hesitated before replying. “Honestly, though, I don’t get to cook for myself much. My previous babysitter would help me with cooking, and when she couldn’t, I had to get take out. I don’t get a lot of chances to cook with having to take care of Sam.”I wanted to ask about why he hesit

After the late lunch, we went back to study for a few more hours. Surprisingly, even with the close proximity, we were both able to focus and we made some headway. With the terrible timing, I wasn’t sure how much I’d be able to help her, but if I could do anything for her at all, then I was going to do it.We broke off late and made dinner. I was starting to wonder when Mom would be coming back with Sam, when she called.“Hello?”“Sorry, Carlton. It’s late, but I just forgot to call. I’ll be keeping Sam with us for the night, okay. I’ll bring him back tomorrow night after you leave work, okay?”I glanced at Lexi, not as against the idea as I probably should have been.“It’s fine, Mom. I’ll see you and Sam tomorrow. Give him a kiss for me.”I rejoined Lexi at the table.“Who was it?”“Mom saying she’s keeping Sam for the night,” I said.“Oh.”Her voice had gone quiet, and she ducked her head as a blush spread on her face. I couldn’t help but smirk.Since Mom was retired, she’d helped m

I should have been in school, but I was in my parents’ home instead. I’d decided to take a short break because morning sickness had kicked in, and I’d had to run out of class a couple times to find a bathroom so I could puke. Even if people wrote it off as a stomach bug, there were people that would put the clues together, and I didn’t want to be the subject of rumors.“Lexi?”“Coming Mom!”I washed my face in the bathroom, then went to the kitchen where Mom was cooking dinner. She looked like an older copy of me, only she was a couple inches taller than I was. She smiled over her shoulder at me as I walked into the kitchen.“Come here and tell me if there’s a smell that makes you sick.”I blushed. “Mom, you don’t have to go that far.”“My baby is going to have a baby! I sat back on the desk in dad’s office. I wasn’t going to stay in for the whole day. Dad wasn’t in, either, but I could take a break from work after this, finally. If I’d thought everything that came before was difficult, I’d been so wrong. Investigating was one thing, but taking care of a problem I’d let get so big? Damn near impossible.I almost couldn’t believe I’d finally finished, but now, I was sure it wasn’t time for me to be in this office yet. Dad needed to come back, and I needed to do some more training before I could take over. After all, even if Alec was the one to do it all, because I was so caught up in my head, and in my own problems, I didn’t catch most of what he did, though I should have.Dad didn’t entirely agree with my decision, but he didn’t argue with me when I brought it up with him. Alec, for his part, was still running around the company like he owned the place, but thankfully, while I worked things out, he’d held back from creating trouble. I doubted it was

My heart was beating fast, in both excitement and anxiety. I was going out today with Carlton to have dinner. Unless some of the time at his apartment counted, when he would cook for me and I’d cook for him, then we’d eat together, we were going out on our first official date tonight. The trip to the park didn’t count, either, because Sam was with us, and he’d be with his grandparents for tonight.I walked out the bathroom after a shower, wrapped in a towel. I didn’t know where Carlton would be taking me for dinner, so I just looked through my closet and picked my best outfit. I quickly dried up then pulled on the clothes. I had a pair of silver sandals with a bit of heel that I didn’t wear often, because I didn’t like shoes with heels. I thought I looked good in the mirror. My phone rang, and I hurried over to the bed to pick it up. It was Carlton calling. My heart skipped a beat.“Hello?”“Lexi? Can you let me know if you’re about ready so we can go? I’m waiting for you outside.”“O

Dad sat behind the desk at his office for the first time in months. Just seeing him in that chair relaxed my heart a little, because some of this responsibility was off my shoulders. I’d done quite a bit of work up to now, and honestly, I was exhausted. Dad wasn’t ready to come back yet, not fully, but soon. At least he could help me out for now.Today wasn’t the best day to show just how weary I was, though. As soon as the door opened, I straightened up in my chair, even though I hadn’t relaxed since we walked into the office. I looked up to see Alec walking inside.“Alec,” Dad said. “Please, come in and sit down.”He didn’t sound nearly as impressed as he did the last time all three of us met together.Alec arched an eyebrow at seeing me there. I’d been out for the past three days finalizing things. A lot of the deals Alec took part in actually happened outside of the company, which was why it was hard to keep track of all of them. I’d managed to compile enough evidence, though, and

When I woke up in the morning, I was disappointed to open my eyes and find myself back in my apartment. I would have been back at Carlton’s penthouse, if only school hadn’t opened up again. I couldn’t put it off. Thankfully, though, because his dad was doing well enough, between him and his mom, they could handle taking care of Sam.I still wish I was there. There was nothing I could do, though. I slipped out of bed and went to take a quick shower then got changed. I picked up my phone to check out my schedule for the day. I had enough time to catch breakfast before my first class of the day, and I headed out. I’d been back for a few days already, and I hadn’t talked to Carlton much in that time. He was busy with his family, and I could hear the stress in his voice when we did talk, so I didn’t want to bother him.I was bothered, though.“Lexi!”I looked up at the call of my name to find my friend waving me over from a few feet away. I called her friend, but really, we were more like

Things at work weren’t getting any better. Alec’s deal was going ahead, and I still didn’t have information on it, even after two weeks. He outright ignored me when I wanted to talk to him, and he wasn’t even hiding that he was making deals without my permission anymore.People at the office were starting to talk and considering that kind of talk got to me fairly easily, I imagined they were losing respect for me at the office.I still had work to do, of course, but now, I mostly did it at home and let the people I was in contact with keep an eye on things at the office.Instead of soaking in misery, however, I was out on a date with Sam and Lexi at the park. She’d insisted on us having a picnic out, rather than stopping at a restaurant on the way, so I drove us there. Sam was in his baby seat at the back with the basket of food beside him, and Lexi took the shotgun seat.“Are we going to be getting ice cream today?” I teased.Lexi laughed. “With all the food we brought, will you even

I made sure I had everything I’d need with me, then picked up Sam.“Are you ready to go out, baby?”Sam didn’t say anything, sucking on his fingers, and I patted his hair.“We’re going to have a lot of fun in the park, okay? Daddy already said it’s fine to get you a little ice cream, and it’s such a nice day out.”A few weeks had passed, and it was already over a month since I started babysitting, and it had hit me that in all that time, unless Carlton’s mom came to take him, Sam didn’t leave the house that often. I was too afraid to just take him out, though, so I’d asked for permission, and Carlton said it was all right. So, for the first time, I was going to have a park date with Sam.There was a park not too far away, and Carlton had left me with some money so I could take a taxi there and back. I’d already called for one, and it was waiting for us downstairs. I had a driver’s license, so if I’d had a car, I could have just driven us there, but when Carlton offered to leave the ca

I looked up from my computer at Alec, who’d just walked into my office. I narrowed my eyes on him.“Is there something I can help you with?”“No, Carlton, you really can’t help me with anything. But Dad asked us to meet him for lunch today. I was wondering if you knew where he wanted to meet us?”I frowned. “What, he didn’t tell you?”Alec didn’t reply, and I took that to mean that he didn’t know. My frown deepened. I hoped Dad didn’t plan this, so we’d have to head over there together.“He sent it to me in a text. I’ll be heading out soon myself, so you can leave now if you want. You know dad will be there a few minutes late.”“Whatever. If you forget to send it, I’ll be back here.”I rolled my eyes and picked up my phone. I heard the office door open and close, and I knew he was gone. Luckily, by the time she got back, Lexi and I had already finished lunch and cleaned up, and we were in the office doing some more learning, fully dressed.“Should I go to the room?” Lexi asked nervously. We stepped out of the office, but she didn’t move far from the doorway, staring at it as if it would bite her. I shook my head.“There’s no reason for you to hide. I’m sure Dad must have told her about you, and I planned to let her know you’re babysitting for me, anyway. Have you ever met her before?”“Well, Dad has, but she didn’t go to your dad’s office as much as you and your brother did, and I missed her at the hospital when I went with Dad to see how Ken was doing.”“You can meet her, then.
