“Remember when I told you that one day we would play hide-and-seek any time?” my mom asked, and I nodded excitedly. “That time is now. Do you remember the rules?”
“I have to find the best hiding place; I have to be quiet, and, no matter what I hear, I don't come out until you tell me the code word,” I replied efficiently.
My mom smiled proudly, but there was something sad in her look.
“You're a very sweet and smart girl, Nadine,” Mom said before giving me a kiss and drawing a picture on my forehead. “What's the key word?”
“Chocolate,” I said before biting into the little chocolate bar she had given me minutes before, and that made her laugh, making her gray eyes sparkle with joy.
“What's the other rule?” mom asked calmly.
“I must never reveal our secret,” I said very seriously.
Hide it our secret my biggest mission, so my tongue would never reveal it.
“Okay, go hide, and no matter what, don't come out,” Mom ordered, and I nodded. ”I love you, Nadine. Always remember that.”
I smiled and gave mom's pristine white hair one last caress before she began counting the numbers from 1 to 100 under her breath.
For as long as I could remember, my mom and I would play hide-and-seek. It was one of the most fun times of my life because I was excited to discover new places I could hide in each of the different houses we moved into.
And that's exactly why I ran excitedly to the new hiding place I had found days ago in the new house. It was a small space in the ventilation duct of the living room, a place that mom would not find easily, and I smiled because this time I was going to win.
I carefully opened the vent grille and slipped inside, then put the grille back so mom wouldn't notice I was there and waited patiently for her to say the code word. Suddenly, the door to the house opened, and I heard several people walking around.
“Nadia is here; I smell her scent,” one man said very confidently. “She's not going to escape this time, so make sure you hold her any way you can. The priority is the girl; the boss needs her intact.”
I frowned, not understanding anything that was going on.
It was the first time I had heard that voice, so I didn't know the man.
My mom didn't invite people to the houses we moved into; it was always her or me, so I followed the rules of the game while listening as the strangers checked every nook and cranny. The only thing I could think was that they were also playing hide-and-seek with us.
“The girl is nowhere to be found,” a woman said after a few minutes. “Do you think Nadia left her somewhere else?”
“Nadia would never be separated from her daughter,” the man said firmly.
That was true; mom and I never spent much time away from each other.
“Nadia would if she knew we were coming for the girl,” the woman replied immediately. “That she-wolf would rip her heart out just to save her daughter.”
“Let's see how true that sentence is,” the man said before climbing the stairs that led to the rooms of the house.
I didn't like that, so I hoped mom had a good hiding place too.
I waited patiently until I heard noises upstairs and then watched as the strangers began to search for me in every corner of the house. They rummaged through everything, broke furniture, and made a mess until they finally left.
That scared me, but I followed the rules.
The problem was that mom never called me, and my tummy was rumbling, a sign that it was time for dinner. I couldn't take it anymore and came out of hiding because I was so hungry.
I saw the damage the strangers had done to the house and immediately went upstairs to look for mom. However, when I approached her room, I had to stop when I saw blood coming out from under the door.
A shiver ran through my body, and my skin bristled in response.
I reached over and carefully opened the door.
I should never have done that.
My mom's body was lying on the floor with her throat slit. She was face-up with her eyes open and a lifeless look in her eyes.
My mind didn't process what was happening until a gasp of horror rose in my throat.
“Mommy! Mommy!” I started screaming over and over as I sat next to her and shook her body.
I didn't know how long I stood crying next to the corpse, but I watched as Serena, Mom's friend, came into the room and gasped at the sight. She immediately came over to me and hugged me tenderly to comfort me.
“I'm so sorry, Nadine,” Serena said painfully, and she began to cry.
Seeing a woman like Serena, with a strong, warrior-like build and an indecipherable expression, cry felt like a horrible reality check. She loved my mom very much; that's why she always offered her help.
Serena tried to separate me from mom's body, and just at that moment, those who had broken into the house returned. That's how I saw the face of the man who had spoken in the living room. He was a tall, blond, strong middle-aged man. The most striking thing about his face was a long scar running across his face.
“I knew there was a possibility of someone coming, but I didn't think I'd be lucky enough to find the girl here,” the blond man said with a sinister smile.
“You're not taking the girl over my dead body,” said Serena, who got up at once and stood in front of me by way of a shield. “You're not going to take her.”
“I was able to kill Nadia in a couple of moves; killing you will be very easy,” the man said in a mocking tone of voice.
Serena saw me, and I noticed that her shorn hair had grown, her eyes had turned golden, and her nails had become sharp claws.
She was going to transform into a she-wolf, so I was afraid.
“Run!” shouted Serena.
It took me a while to react, and I watched as Serena attacked the blond man without hesitation. She was aggressive, and the man growled, then his eyes turned red, and that only meant he was a vampire.
The blood drained from my face, and I stood up quickly.
I didn't hesitate to run; I ran down the stairs, and when I was about to go out the door, a man held me tightly. I started screaming in fear and was unaware that my screams made the light bulbs in the house flicker.
“Let go of me!” I screamed.
“The little beast has a temper,” said the woman I had heard earlier; she was a beautiful redhead, and they also had red eyes. “Get a tranquilizer or the little beast will be a nightmare to move.”
As one of the men approached with a syringe, I felt a current of power begin to form inside me, and as he prepared to inject me, I screamed in a different way than I had screamed before.
I released a power I did not know, a power that tried to consume me with force, and suddenly the house began to shake and people near me fell to the ground. I didn't know what had happened, but as I got closer, I saw that everyone was bleeding from their nose and ears.
“Run Nadine!” shouted Serena from the stairs, and I saw her bleeding from her nose before she fell hard.
I knew that what I had done had affected everyone equally.
I heeded Serena, took my advantage, and ran so fast I never looked back.
Part I. Meeting of SoulsNadine13 years later...I woke up in the middle of the night with erratic breathing and a racing heart.I had dreamed again of my mother's death, but this time I saw her killed in a much more grotesque way. The hunters had sat her down in front of me and ripped out her heart so that I would suffer.I shook the horrific image out of my head.I brought my hand to my chest and felt the rune of protection.I sighed in relief, knowing that at least I had an advantage over the hunters. After years of running away, I had found a way to disappear from the map more effectively, and that was by sealing my energy trail so that searching for me would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It was a trick I learned from my mother when I was old enough to know what she always drew on my forehead after kissing me.I moved all the time, didn't last long in one job, and used different aliases. It was all I could do to keep everyone alive, especially them.Don't think abou
NadineIf someone had told me what was going to happen, I would never have believed them.It was impossible to think that the most beautiful vision I had ever had in my life, one different from the images of terror that always flooded my brain, could turn into some kind of nightmare.Biel looked at me angrily, and I did not respond. The priest took the drawing and looked at it with interest, then frowned.“Who are the other men?” The old man asked, and I said nothing.I had sworn the sight of my gourds to secrecy, so I kept my mouth shut tight and stood up straight. That brought Biel and the priest into each other's eyes, then Biel nodded and walked toward the exit, but not before looking at me as if I were a serious problem. And yes, I was a problem he shouldn't be dealing with. When Biel left, I let go of my hands and tried to regulate my breathing.“Aren't you going to say anything about this drawing?” The priest asked curiously, and I shook my head. “Then I'm going to tell you who
BielHunting the woman of the prophecy had almost turned out to be an impossible mission. We didn't know who she was or what magical powers she had, so I couldn't find her trail. So when the temple gave us clues on how to catch a stripper who was related to her, I didn't hesitate to come up with a plan.I set up an intelligence operation with elite guards in the small city of Valkir. The capital of Valter, one of the 3 common areas of Kagolen, the continent where we lived. Once we found the club where the stripper worked, it was a matter of investigating her movements until she finally met the woman of the prophecy. It was a good move on my part, and when the woman was apprehended, I declared the operation a success. The woman was already hours into her processing, and all was going well until one of the operation's guards approached me with a serious expression.“What's going on, Jackson?” I immediately asked the vampire.“When the unknown female attempted to flee, I entered her apar
NadineBiel didn't miss the opportunity to hit me back. And when I saw the others, they were all serious, as if what I had told them was a sentence. And maybe it was, but it was just a way to protect them, and if I had to be a bitch to do it, I wouldn't hesitate to hurt them if it would keep them alive.“We don't need to be aggressive here,” said the blonde woman who had introduced us. “I think they need a moment to—”“We need privacy, Lu,” Biel answered her in a sweet voice. “Go find the high priest, Lion, please.”The blonde looked at him earnestly, and I could tell there was something longing in her eyes. That bothered me a lot, especially when she complied with Biel's order as if it was nothing.“Speak up, Nadine; we don't have our whole lives to put up with your tantrums,” Biel said, and I pursed my lips.“I don't owe you anything,” I replied immediately. “The soulmate test means nothing, so I'm not obligated to get involved with either of you.”“I'm sorry to be discerning with y
Nadine“We are going to give you today to reflect,” Drago said, and I looked at him with surprise. “You need to clear your mind so we can have a proper conversation. It's obvious you weren't planning to meet us, at least not now. So have a break, and tomorrow we'll talk about the importance of the prophecy. You are the chosen one, but the prophecy goes beyond you; it involves all of us.”Aris nodded seriously and released me carefully, then Connor looked at me doubtfully.“You told us what you want, but now I really doubt that's what you want,” Connor said with the drawing in his hand. “A person doesn't draw someone this way if they don't have feelings, and I have a feeling it was years before you were able to perfect these drawings.”I swallowed saliva, and Aris watched me with a frown.“Whatever you do with empathy, don't do it with me,” I asked, and the vampire smiled sadly.“I'm sorry to tell you that I can't please you,” Aris said, and I frowned. “My empathy is something that is
Part II. First TestDragoLeaving the room had cost me a lot because I knew very well how upset Nadine was. My beast wanted to take her, to take her away from the temple and protect her at any cost.I had learned to be much calmer and more analytical over the years; my dragon sent that to hell when he felt his mate. She was capable of awakening all impulses. After being a loveless millennial being, knowing she existed was a miracle in itself.“Your rooms are close to Nadine's,” Lion said, and that gave me some reassurance. “I don't know if you know all about the mate bond, but once you meet for the first time, the force of attraction will be much stronger, and it will be uncomfortable for you to be away from her.”Connor, the young wolf, looked confused, and Aris put his arm on his shoulder, a clear sign of the trust and intimacy they had for each other. It was strange to see a werewolf and a vampire being friends, but it turned out to be interesting.“It'll be fine; we'll adjust to t
NadineI woke up with my racing heart.I felt the power coursing through my veins, and terror flooded me as I realized that what I had experienced in the last 24 hours had been very real. However, I could not remember what had caused such an alteration, although I knew very well that it was a nightmare. When I opened my eyes, I wished I wasn't standing on a hill with all my mates watching me with a frown.“Since when do you have night terrors?” I asked Aris with red eyes, and I knew he was too upset. “I'm going to kill them, Nadine. Every single one of them that hurt you.”I frowned, not understanding what was going on, then something in my mind clicked Aris' power, and I looked at him in horror. I couldn't believe it.“Tell me you didn't get inside my head,” I said in fear. “Tell me you didn't see anything.”“I had to do that to keep you from staying upset; I had a hard time feeling your terror,” Aris said unapologetically. “I had to wake you up right away or you were capable of send
ConnorWatching my mate suffer was not in my life plans.Just before I felt the call of the temple, I was drinking with Aris and told him about the problem I was having in my pack: the council was pressuring me to accept an alliance with another powerful pack through marriage. The fact that the Elders were putting an ancient practice on the table so that at last my pack would have a Luna was insulting, but for them to entertain the possibility that I would never have a mate was humiliating.“Do they really want to marry you off like that?” asked Aris in horror. The old vampire had been a friend of my family for centuries and saved my great-grandfather in the last supernatural war, so he forged a strong bond with my family that was nearly broken by my father but which I regained. If there was anyone who could help me see things right, it was Aris. Somehow, he went from being my secret advisor to being one of my best friends.“Yeah, they say I have enough years without a match in the so
