To make sure I would be a wonderful wife to my mate, my mother imparted numerous skills to me. How to cook and keep the home.

She would have been better off guiding me in the restraint required not to stab the said mate when he proved himself a short-witted drunkard with an acid tongue.

My temper was under extreme testing today. "What are you doing? Carspey asked, bending over my shoulder and his breath stinging mead. “Cleaning the catch.” Huffing out an angry breath, Carspey yanked the knife from my fingers, nearly slicing open my palm. I don’t like the way you do it.” His lip twisted.

“The way you are doing it is wrong. Pack members complain.” That was true, but it wasn’t complaints about fish. My lovely mate was a child of the gods, having the moon goddess gifted him a drop of Njord blood at his conception, which gave him immense power over the creatures of the sea. Instead of utilizing it to care for our pack, he used it to deny other pack fishermen of any catch even as he filled his nets. Then he charged double what the fish were worth of the very people whose nets he kept empty.

Everyone knew it. But no one dared breathe a word against him. He was Carspey the Savior, the man who’d delivered the Moonlit shadow pack from famine ten years ago, pulling in fish from the North Sea to fill tummies, ensuring no one went without. A hero, everyone had called him.

And maybe once that was so, but fame and avarice had overcome the kindness that had given him the title, and now the whole pack spat at his name

That no one had put a knife in his back was largely because he had Alpha Orion's protection. The ruthless Alpha that take over our pack after invading us and killing our Alpha and his mate.

My mother constantly warned me when I complained. “You would do best to remember that he brings wealth to your home.” Wealth. It was the reason my father forced  me to be his mate despite all my protests. Yet instead of living to witness his mistakes.

My father had died on my wedding night, leaving everyone to mumble about bad omens and ill-fated unions.

Except it was hard to complain against him for Carspey was generous to my mother, paying for all her necessities while my brother won his position in the battle band of Alpha Orion. For my family, I will do this, I silently muttered, much as I did the night I’d been wed. For my family, I will endure him. Aloud, I declared, “I will do better.”

And because he didn’t look satisfied, I spoke loudly, “I will do it your way, Carspey “Show me.” The condescension drove my teeth to clench so tightly they nearly broke, but I obliged, rapidly gutting another fish. Carspey snorted, my mother was right. The moon goddess should’ve mated me to an ugly woman whose worth was in her skill. Not a pretty one whose only competence is her beauty. Looks don't gut fish. Looks do not make child.” As far as the last went, my looks never would. I spent practically all the wealth he gave me purchasing lemon juice from the traders who came to us from the Nightshade Howlers pack, and if Carspey had ever wondered why his cock smelt of citrus after we coupled, he’d never asked. “A year, woman. A whole year of marriage and service yet no son.”

I bent over the board, gutting another fish to hide the tears threatening to fall. I’d never subject a child to this man. Never, at the beginning of every cycle I made a sacrifice to the goddess I was named after, imploring her to keep my womb empty. So far, she’d been merciful.

As if hearing my thoughts, Carspey seized my braid, yanking me to my feet. Andronika,” he hissed. I want you to do things appropriately. I want you to give me what I want.” My scalp hurt, just the tightness of my braid preventing him from yanking out a fistful of hair, and my rage snapped. “Perhaps it is you who is doing it wrongly, mate. His knife pressed on my cheek, his breath sour as he said, “Maybe the key is to make you less pretty, Andronika. Then you will have to master new skills.” The steel was cold and nasty. It stripped away my triumph and replaced it with worry. I  Couldn’t allow myself to break, cry, or beg, since that was what he wanted: lowering me , I met his gaze and whispered,do it, Carspey, and then go to the village and see if they’ll still acclaim you a hero when they find you sliced your wife’s face to despise her beauty.” His lip twisted. You need me.” “That doesn’t mean they need to honor you.” And a narcissist like him craved that honor. I saw the wheels of his thoughts work; no doubt he was wondering how much he could injure me without consequence. The blade pressed harder on my cheek, searing, and I pulled in a deep breath to calm my increasing panic. He heard it. Carspey grinned, my brief show of vulnerability gratifying him. He released my hair, lowering his knife. “Get back to work, you spinless worm. When you’re finished, take two fish to your mother. Perhaps she’ll remind you of your duty. It is her responsibility and your father’s that you don’t know them.” “Do not speak ill of my father!” I grabbed my knife, but Carspey merely sneered at it.

“There is the proof,” he remarked. “He forgot you were a daughter and taught you like your brother. Now instead of a mate, I have a grown lady who plays at being a warrior like a young child, brandishing her stick and imagining every tree her foe.” Heat burned up my chest, turning my cheeks to infernos because he was not wrong.  “I’ve allowed you too much idle time, which the gods know is the ruination of good character.” The only idle time I was permitted was the hours I slept, but I said nothing. Carspey turned away from me, heading right to the water’s edge, the sea shimmering in the sunshine. Lifting his hand, he invoked Njord name. For a long moment, nothing occurred, and I muttered a silent prayer that the god of the sea had finally recognized what a piece of trash his child was and taken away his magic. Wasted prayers, for a heartbeat later the water quivered. And the fish began jumping.

Only a few at first, but suddenly dozens and dozens were launching themselves out of the water and onto the beach until I could not see the rocks through the seething mass of fins and scales.

“This should keep you busy,” Carspey smirked. “Give your mother my love.”

I watched the fish writhing about on the shore, anxious to return to the ocean. Such a waste, for there were more here than we could sell before they spoil. And it was not the first time he’d done such a thing. I’d once watched him beach a whale.Pulling up my skirts, I hurried to where the fish flopped, snatching up one of them and throwing it into the water. Moving along the waterline, I returned Carspey ’s bounty to the sea, my stomach twisting whenever I spotted a  dead fish , but there were so many. Finding a fish still alive where it had hurled itself into some undergrowth, I grabbed it up and chucked it over my shoulder and thrown it into the sea.

Which I’d struck with the fish.“Was the fish hurt?” I asked, thinking I’d murdered it in my haste to save it. “Did it swim away?” The man ceased massaging his face and gave me an unbelieving stare. “What about me?” I stopped looking for the fish and gave him a closer look, my face instantly heated.I feel a strange attraction to the man.Even with an impact-reddened cheek, he was dangerously handsome. Tall and broad of shoulder, he appeared to be only a few years older than my twenty years. His black hair was shaved on the sides, the rest pulled back in a short tail behind his tattooed skull. He was all high cheekbones and carved lines, and while most guys wore beards, he bore scars of not shaving for several days.He wore no shirt, and water flowed down a nude torso corded with thick muscle

  • Bloodbound Destiny    OPEN DIVORCE

It took me hours to finish with the catch. I loaded the trolley for Carspey before selecting two choice fish for my mother. By that time, the excitement of my experience with the warrior had vanished, replaced with the sobering reality that Carspey lived, that I was his mate and that I had enraged him. Wind whistled down the mountains, carrying with it the smell of melting snow, and I breathed, grateful to be away from the stink of fish and intestines and my guilt, though a fair quantity of all three still clung to my garments. Pine needles crunched beneath my boots, filling my nose with their strong aroma and alleviating the tightness in my shoulders. It was fine. It would all be alright. This wasn’t the first time I’d battled with Carspey, and it wouldn’t be the last. I’d survived a year with him already and I’d withstand another. And another. But I wanted to accomplish more than just survive. I wanted my days to be more than the time I needed to endure. I wante

Battle. Raid. Earn my wealth, I answered. I don’t need Carspey. Declan blew out a breath, then got to his feet. Let’s not quarrel. It’s been months since I’ve seen you. I glanced at the hand he held out, half of me wanting to keep arguing. We both knew I’d never make a decision that would harm my family, and that made all my arguments meaningless. So instead, I took my brother’s hand and let him haul me to my feet. Where does Alpha Orion plan to raid this summer? Before Declan could answer, the sound of hooves filled our ears. A gang of warriors on horseback came, and my gut tightened as I recognized my mate at their head, his countenance smug. My lord. Declan nodded at the huge guy who rode at Carspey ’s side, who must be Alpha Orion. I’d never seen him before, having never ventured more than a few hours from the Moonlit shadow pack and never to his stronghold at Mystic Rune pack.Tall and thick, he had dark brown hair and a beard laced with gray, his eyes lined

Exactly what do you wish to achieve? he asked Alpha Orion. You want proof she can’t fight? Here—” He swung at me. I fell back with a cry, tripping on a root and falling on my arse, dropping my weapon. There’s your proof. Send her back to her mate and the fish. That is not the proof I seek, Alpha Orion responded, and my stomach flipped with the worry that this would cost me far more than pride. I got to my feet to discover that the other warriors had my brother by the arms, holding him back. Carspey sniggered from beyond. To first blood, then? Tristan demanded. There was rage in his voice, the flames of his axe blazing with intensity. He didn’t want this fight, but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t do it to prove his loyalty. To do otherwise risked terrible consequences, which I doubted he would be ready to incur for a lady he didn’t know. No. Alpha Orion dismounted and transferred the reins of his horse to another warrior before crossing his arms. To the death. My

The laughter slipped away from Tristan’s eyes. “I wish fate had been kinder to you, Andronika .” Without warning, he attacked. Gone were the halfhearted swats and facile parries, and in their stead came hard blows that drove me staggering. I thought I knew how to fight. What it would be like to be in real combat. Nothing could have prepared me for the awareness that no matter how hard I swung, how quickly I parried, the end was coming for me. My shield burned, smoke and heat searing my eyes, but I didn’t dare drop it. Angie attacked again. I attempted to defend, but his axe got hold of my sword and wrenched it from my fingers, sending it spinning into the trees. This was it. This was the moment. Yet Tristan paused, backing back instead of rushing in for the kill. A killer, certainly. But not a murderer. “Get it over with,” Alpha Orion yelled. “You’ve dragged this out long enough. Kill her!” I was terrified. So dreadfully scared that when I drew in breath after desperate b

Alpha Orion signaled for his troops to pull Declan to his feet. “You will keep your ring and place, Declan, but we must address the matter of your loyalty. You knew I sought a daughter of Freyja yet said nothing to me of your sister, despite knowing the goddess’s blood flowed in her veins. For that, you must be punished.” He hefted the axe he had.“No!” The yell tore from my lips, shrill with panic. “You gave your word!” I went to step between them, but Tristan was faster. He caught me about the waist, hauling me backward until my shoulder blades smashed into his chest. “He won’t kill him,” he murmured in my ear, breath hot. “Once it is done, it will be done. Don’t get in the way.” “Let me go!” I resisted and fought, trying to slam my heels down on his boots, but he merely lifted me off my feet like a child. “Declan !” My brother stood straight-backed with his chin up. Accepting his fate. Alpha Orion swung. The flat of the blade struck my brother in the shin, th

“Easy, Andronika .” His voice was low and gentle. “The poultice will take away the pain.” I pulled in a strained breath. “Tristan,” someone whispered, “this is—” “I know,” he interrupted. “We need to hurry.” The haste intensified my terror, but I needed to see. Needed to know how horrible it was. “Let me see” His jaw stiffened. “Andronika” I lifted my chin from his grip and looked down. The flesh of my wrist and hand was coated with a thick crimson paste, but not my palm. Because my palm… The skin was gone. I stared at the blackened pile of ash, gagged, then twisted and vomited, the world swimming. “I warned you.” Tristan put a cloth across my burns, then stooped down, his arms going behind my knees and shoulders. “I can walk,” I protested, though it might have been a lie. “I’m sure you can.” He raised me as though I weighed no more than a kid, placing me against his chest. “But this will give you a better story for Philomela to sing about. Nausea rolled up inside me, and I wrenched from Tristan’s embrace to vomit, though all that came up was bile. The force of it forced me to my knees and would’ve seen my hand planted into the dirt if Tristan hadn’t caught my elbow, holding it aloft. “Lovely.” Luna Lyra heaved out a breath. “Bring her inside. Assuming she lives, this will be her home now.” Home. As Tristan hoisted me, careful not to touch my hand, my gaze flew to the skyscraper we stood before. A huge hall. Though structured the same as any other home, this structure was twice the height of any I’d ever seen, the planks forming the walls carved with runes and knotwork, and the double entrances huge enough to allow five men to enter at once. Tristan directed me toward one of the numerous cots in the room. I lay down, the furs under me thick and plush, as were those Tristan put over me, though they did nothing to drive away the frost. I shuddered and shook, most of the water from the cup he held to my mout

The women doled out bowls to everyone, and I sat apart while I ate my food and stewed over my circumstances. When I finished, I laid my bowl down and opened the ointment Lyra had given me.The contents were waxy and smelly, but though the smell was not terrible, I sealed it.“You need to use it because it will help.” I twitched at Tristan ’s voice, having not heard him approach out of the shadowed trees. He sat across the fire from me, picking up a stick and poking pensively at the embers before adding more wood. Then he looked up. “Well? Aren’t you going to put it on?”My fingers were stiff and would be worse come the morning, but for reasons I couldn’t explain, I set aside the jar.And was rewarded with a cry of exasperation from Tristan , who rose and circled the fire. “Give me the poultice.” Deeply aware that all eyes were on us, I handed over the tiny pot, cringing as he removed a large glob, the frugalness in me rejecting the excess.“You aren’t aware of the chests of silver

“Careful!” I tensed, frightened that the power might fracture his hand. But with absolute courage, he pushed his palm against the magic. Instead of resisting his touch, my magic allowed Tristan ’s palm to sink into it like water. I felt the moment he touched the pot itself, a soft pressure, whereas, with the blow of his axe, I’d felt nothing. The sensation traveled up my arm and down into my core, as though he touched not magic and metal, but my bare skin, and I shivered.“You get what you give,” he mumbled, then lifted his eyes from the magic to face mine. “Or perhaps more accurately, you give what you get.” The rest of the world slipped away as I considered his remarks, it felt for all the world like he was the first person to ever understand me. Except…that wasn’t quite it.My family understood me. My friends understood me. But there were things about me that they wanted to change, but Tristan appeared to accept the way I was. The mountain top is a sacred ground.” Tristan’s palm pressed into my ribs to hold me stable. “No weapons are allowed, as all deaths must be in sacrifice to the gods, which means some level of safety within Vanda’s borders.” I didn’t take much comfort in that. “How long will it take us to reach the mountain?” “Tomorrow we’ll reach the village at the base of the mountain, where we’ll leave the horses,” he continued. Then another half day’s climb.” A night out in the open. I swallowed hard.“I think we should ride faster.” By the time dusk arrived, the horses were laboring hard and my body hurt from bouncing up and down for hours on Tristan’s lap. Judging from his groans as he gently dismounted his horse, collapsing on his back in the dirt and shouting at the heavens that he’d lost the ability to sire offspring, he’d not fared much better. Yet it was the first time since we’d left Mystic Rune pack that anyone laughed, so I appreciated the release of tension even i

  • Bloodbound Destiny    THE WARNING

Vanda was the sacred temple on the very summit of the mountain known as Hammar. Every nine years there was a gathering that attracted people from near and far to pay tribute to the gods and offer their sacrifices. I’d never been before, my parents had always declared that it was not a place for children, and this would be the first time it took place since I’d come of age.The great hall was in a bustle of activity, two dozen horses and several pack animals were mounted and loaded when I emerged in dry clothes and a heavy cloak. Lyra was guiding the procedure, the Luna of Mystic Rune pack no longer attired in a costly dress, but in warrior’s gear, including a mail shirt, and a long axe hanging from her belt. I had no question that she knew how to utilize it. Particularly when her opponent’s back was turned.“You will remain with the warriors I’m leaving behind to protect Mystic Rune pack,” Orion remarked to Owen. “You will be alpha in my absence. He was only slightly taller than I was and fairly thin, his hair golden blond where his brother’s was dark, and his eyes blue rather than green. “You are the warrior princess, then?” he asked, and without waiting for a response added, “I suppose I must congratulate you on your marriage to my father.” Nothing in his tone suggested congratulations, which was perhaps reasonable, considering that Lyra was his mother, but I gave him a little nod. “Thank you.” He glared, then turned his back on me in favor of his brother. “We captured a spy.” Tristan moved on his feet, gaze narrowing. “Whose spy?” An elder warrior, a man with brown skin and silver-streaked dark hair coiled

Alpha Orion wants you to become a warrior, not a glowing beacon in the shield wall that everyone will try to kill.”“You think I want to be a figurehead?” I demanded. “You think I asked to be named in a seer’s prophecy? My feet created echoing thumps as I stomped to the far end, the sea a shimmering steel blue. Though the spring air was cold and the tops of the neighboring mountains were still covered with snow, the overhead sun was warm enough that I didn’t regret leaving my cloak at the great hall. I turned back in time to witness Tristan dumping his shirt into the dock, muscular muscles and tattooed flesh all in obvious view. Setting the shields at my feet, I crossed my arms. “Worried about falling in?” I refused to say the term wet.“No.” He hooked his thumbs over his belt. His trousers fell low enough to display the sharp V of muscle that disappeared inside them. The wound he’d sustained last night was gone, likely healed with Seraphina’s power. Realizing I was staring at the delicious length of naked skin, I dragged my eyes to his face while waving at his discarded shirt. My morning had been wasted sitting around waiting for Tristan since the sun was high in the sky and I was pissed off. “Tristan isn’t much for mornings,” Seraphina murmured, stepping up from behind me.“The only reason one typically sees him at dawn is because he’s yet to go to bed.” That didn’t surprise me at all.Seraphina, however, had been at the great hall at dawn, checking on the progress of the injured. “You know him well?” I posed Ivy the question, The healer shrugged. “As well as anyone, I suppose. I was raised on a farm north of Mystic Rune pack, but I didn’t come to serve Alpha Orion until after my gift emerged, which was after Tristan was taken to the Northern region.” I blinked. “Northern region?”One of Seraphina’s eyebrows raised, then she shook her head. “I forget how things are in a small pack, not knowing any of the events going on more than an hour’s ride in any direction.” She sighed. “There are days I’d give anything to go back to a life of blissful ignorance.”

Alpha Orion was thrilled that it had been me who’d set fire to the ships, considering it as proof of the accuracy of the seer’s foretelling. I was half tempted to tell him that I’d become floating on the sea if not for his son.Victorious or not, buildings in Mystic Rune pack still burned, scores of corpses cooled on the ground, and many more moaned and cried from injuries. Logically, I understood the death toll would’ve been far worse if I hadn’t given the early warning, yet it still felt like a failure.Standing close to Lyra and Orion , we witnessed an ancient woman conduct the rituals for the burial of the dead.I looked away and my attention latched on a hooded person going slowly down the waterline, veiled by haze. At first, I assumed it was merely the smoke from the pyres. But as I observed, I saw the smoke was coming from the individual. Not just smoke, but particles of ember and ash, as though the individual were aflame.“Lyra.” I got hold of her arm. “Look at that person
