Misty made a gesture and a moment later I felt a fist hit me in the stomach, sending me to my knees.
“Talk back like that again, Cutter,” my older sister Misty said in her sweetest tone. “And I’ll hit you again.”
Being the daughter of the Alpha Lord, the strongest Alpha in our territory, Misty could do no wrong and was untouchable. Even the teachers here at school knew better than to say anything against her. Being two years older than me at sixteen, she’s had two years to weed out any facility who didn’t learn to look the other way.
Struggling back to my feet, the weight from carrying all of her and her three friend’s bags making it more difficult, I worked to steady by breathing again. All I did was answer her question about why it was so difficult to get a hold of her favorite color of nail polish. Her perfectly manicured nails, freshly touched up just this morning before school started, was the reason I knew she wouldn’t be the one to personally hit me.
“I was just explaining, ma’am,” I said in my smallest voice. “That we’ve been at war with the Bloodmoon Vampires and the rebel Werewolf Packs for over four years now. Things are hard to come by in times of war.”
She gestured again, and this time it was Lacy’s turn to hit me. A wide grin split her lips just before the breath was once again ripped from my lungs. Unfortunately, instead of just falling to my knees, the heavy bags I was carrying caused me to fall into Lacy. A scream split the hallways as the large, iced coffee she was carrying spilled onto the back of Misty’s expensive skirt.
Despite the pain wracking my center, I scrambled to my feet and tried to run for it but ended up smacking into a solid wall of flesh. Rubbing my head, I looked up just in time for my older brother to shove me aside into a nearby bay of lockers. Dazed, all I could do was stare up as he and his friends walked over to check on Misty.
Christopher, or Chris as everyone close to him called him, was the future Alpha of the Blade’s Edge Pack, and therefore the future Alpha Lord of the entire territory. He was massive, like all werewolf warriors tended to be, but even comparted to his buddies, he was a big one. At his side, like always, was his future Beta Dillan, and the two most promising Warriors of our generation, George and Conner. None of them so much as noticed me, like always, as they walked past where I was crumpled on the ground.
“Is everything alright, little sister,” Chris asked, a touch of worry in his voice. They were only a year apart and looked like they could almost be twins. The same golden hair and striking green eyes that their mother, Luna Lannie had, not to mention the natural beauty and perfection that came with being the children of royalty.
“That little turd just ruined my best skirt,” Misty whined, her lips pouting just like the cubs tended to do. “I just made the comment that my favorite store wasn’t able to stock a few crucial items, and she threw her coffee on me.”
A crowd of people had gathered around us at this point. Between Misty and Chris, the entirety of the Junior and Senior classes were in their pockets, and it seemed that most of them had assembled already. Word must’ve spread quickly that I messed up again, and now they were here to watch the aftermath. I saw at least two teachers pass by, but when I tried to make eye contact with them, silently pleading for help, they just lowered theirs and walked away. I couldn’t be angry with them, not really, because helping me meant possible losing their jobs.
Chris smiled as he crouched down in front of me. I puled my legs into my arms, trying to become as small as possible. Before he even started to say anything, I could feel his aura pushing against me, forcing my head and eyes to drop as low as possible.
They weren’t really my siblings. Ever since my pack was destroyed when I was little, I’ve been living in their house as an adopted sibling. It was the catalyst that started the civil war, the destruction of the pack my family was part of. Before the Blade’s Edge pack claimed Lordship over the territory, the Thunder Pack held that title. My father had been a low-ranking warrior, and my mother worked as a housekeeper in the Alpha’s house, meaning my older brother and I were about as low in the pack standings as one could get. But we were happy, from the few memories I still had of them.
As the sole survivor, saved by the Elder Alpha Lord Roland, Misty and Chris’s grandfather, I was practically an outcast from day one. And that was before my illness was taken into account.
“Pull back your sleave,” Chris ordered, using his aura just enough to make me tremble. “I don’t want to touch your nasty clothes.”
Without a choice, I did as he ordered and pulled back the right sleeve of my oversized sweatshirt. Little more than the Alpha's family’s servant, I was never given anything new. All of my clothes were one’s Chris used to wear when he was younger. Even so, with my small size, they were still baggy and ill fitting. Misty absolutely refused to allow me to wear her old clothes and burned the first hand-me-down outfit of hers that I tried on.
The housekeeper who gave them to me was fired on the spot, and I never saw her again.
“Remove the wrapping,” Chris ordered, shaking his head in annoyance.
It took a few tries with my shaking hands to remove the sports wrap hiding the pink skin on the underside of my forearm. The old burn was mostly healed, and I clenched my teeth tight as I waited. Pleading never did any good, not with him. He was his father’s son, ruthless and powerful. There was a reason the Blade’s Edge Pack was known far and wide as one of the strongest in all the territories.
A small flame, the size of what a candle could produce, appeared above his pointer finger, his green eyes glowing like it always did when he used his magic. On top of being the son of an Alpha Lord, Chris was also one of the most extremely rare and powerful classes of werewolves.
A Shaman.
Adding the ability to wield magic to his already overpowered build seemed cruel to me. Why did so much potential end up in the hands of someone like when, when it took me over a week just to heal from a simple burn?
The thought left my head instantly when I felt intense pain as he pressed the flame against my forearm, right on top of the old wound. Tears filled my eyes and fell, but I kept my teeth clenched tight. I dared not scream, for it would only make the punishment worse. All I could do was whimper softly and cry until he finally stood up again. The smell of burned flesh, mixed with the pain shooting through my arm, made my stomach lurch.
“Gross,” Misty squealed, then joined in with the laughter that filled the halls as I emptied my pitiful breakfast. I was just lucky that I didn’t get any on their bags that were still slung over my shoulders, otherwise things would've gotten so much worse.
“She still ruined my favorite skirt, brother,” Misty said petulantly, then she perked up right away as a thought passed through her empty brain.
Snapping her fingers, she sent a silent message to her three friends.
Misty and her friends all found their wolves when they turned sixteen, as was the way with all werewolves. And so, they tried to flaunt their new powers every chance they got, like right now. All three of her minions, Lacy, Evelyn, and Bethony, came over and manhandled me until they had all of their bags back in hand. Only my own tattered backpack remained with me.
“It’s a good thing I always bring a spare outfit or two,” Misty sweetly, fluttering her eyes at Dillan. As the highest-ranking male in the pack after Chris, he was normally the only one worth her attention. “I would hate for you to see me in anything but my best.”
“I could help you change, if you need a hand,” Dillan smirked back, his brown eyes like melted chocolate. As much as I disliked him, even my heart seemed to skip a beat when he turned on his full charm. I hated myself for it, but I couldn’t lie to myself either.
“Gross, not in front of me, dude,” Chris growled playfully, hitting Dillan in the arm. And just like that, the guys all started to wrestle, ending with Dillan sprinting away down the halls with Chris hot on his heels. Their friends followed behind, laughing so hard they could barely stay upright.
The bell rang and most of the other students began to hurry to class, but when I tried to stand up to join them, Misty pushed me right back down again.
“It’s only fair that your gross sweatpants are ruined too, don’t you think,” Misty said, standing over me with her friend’s flanking on either side of her.
“Yes, ma’am,” I answered softly. Not answering would have made her angrier, there was no such thing as a rhetorical question with her. Though, I doubted she even knew what rhetorical meant. Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself for having ice cold coffee dumped over me, but when nothing seemed to happen, I looked up a bit to see what was going on. The evil smile on her face made my start to shake even harder.
“You know, I was just thinking the other day that it’s been a long time since you last wet yourself, Cutter,” Misty said, once again using her favorite nickname for me. My real name was Ayla, which someone once told me meant moonlight, but few people ever called me that. They all had various nicknames for me instead.
“Please, Misty, don't make me do that,” I pleaded, tears once again filling my eyes. I was already the laughingstock of the entire school, the whole pack really, but I still had some dignity left. If word got around that I had an accident like this, then even that would take a huge hit.
The look in her eyes, however, let me know instantly that I messed up badly.
“How dare you speak my name with that disgusting mouth of yours,” she seethed, pressing the toe of her heels into the fresh burn on my right forearm. I cried out, just barley holding back a scream. She held it there, rubbing it in harder and harder, until I felt close to passing out. Only once my struggles weakened did she relent.
“Good, now that what little strength that puny body of yours possesses is gone, let’s continue,” she said sweetly again. “We have class to get to, and boys to talk too, so I don’t want to waste any more time on you.”
She then locked eyes with me and used every scrap of power she had behind her aura, which was, unfortunately, quite considerable thanks to her rank. I struggled as best I could, tears of embarrassment still leaking down my cheeks, until the inevitable happened. And the moment she sensed victory, she only had to say one word to ruin my life even worse than it already was.
“Pee.”
Warmth seeped down my leg as I began to cry in shame, just as Misty took a step closer.
“Embarrass me in front of Dillan again, and this will seem like a pleasant dream. And don’t even think of changing until lunchtime. I expect you at my table, cleaned up and on time. Let’s go, girls. I need to change before we go take the pop quiz for math.”
They laughed and finally I was all alone again.
Retreating into the back of my mind, my face and eyes turn blank as I made my way to class, more embarrassed than ever before in my life.
My morning classes passed in a horrifying blur. The snickering and laughter from my classmates was bad enough, but it was the teachers who made everything worse. Two of them made me stand in the corner of the room, saying I wasn’t allowed to sit at my desk until I was ready to grow up. And another one gave me detention when I told her I couldn’t go get cleaned up when she ordered me to do so.It was mortifying.Only Mr. Davidson didn’t make a big deal out of it. Instead of drawing attention to my problem, which everyone in the school had been aware of at that point since it was the last period before lunch, he simply placed a towel down on my chair before jumping right into his lecture.I was more grateful to him than I could ever show. Since he taught Advanced Sciences, most of the students in class were in my siblings years, which meant they would all go tattling to them if it looked like Mr. Davidson and I had a closer than average relationship. When he asked me to stay after to tal
This was only the third week of term and already I despised lunch. The lunchroom was already one of the most awkward and terrifying parts of high school, but I envied those whose only problems were where to sit, or who to sit with.I didn’t have either of those problems.“Did you get all that, Cutter,” Misty glared, looking up at me through her lash extensions.“Yes, ma’am,” I replied in my zombie tone. The four of them just finished listing off what they wanted for lunch, and now it was my job to go and fetch everything. I waited for her to dismiss me with an annoyed flick of her wrist before turning and heading for the kitchen. After all the excitement this morning, the limp in my right leg started to act up again as I began to fill the first tray. I spent every weekend working in Elder Alpha Roland’s Manor, and rarely did I ever escape without some kind of injury. He was the Alpha who stepped up and unified the other Packs in the territory when the Thunder Pack was massacred by the
His dark cloths molded his body perfectly, emphasizing his lean muscles and wavey light brown hair. His arms were crossed, and though he didn’t seem to be overly muscled like some of our strongest warriors, he was far from helpless. Quite the opposite, in fact, and I could just tell that he knew how to handle himself. His strength wasn’t obvious, like our warriors. No, his was subtle, and so much more deadly. I had no doubts that he could take on, and defeat, every single person in the lunchroom. But it was his eyes that really made my body flush. Dark brown, full of both mischief and cunning, I knew I could lose myself in them forever if given the chance. And it was then that I realized what was wrong, that there was only one reason why I was able to see into his eyes so clearly.Because he was looking right at me.Panicking, I broke eye contact and hide behind Misty, who was just as enthralled as I had been a moment earlier. It made me sick, realizing that we had that moment in commo
After fleeing from class, I stressed my injured leg to the max to make it to office before anyone could chase me down. I knew I was being paranoid, but it was always better to play it safe. Mrs. Lennit looked up quickly from behind her computer when I came crashing in, startled.“Good heavens, what’s the rush young lady,” she said, fixing me with a disapproving look.“Sorry, Mrs. Lennit, I was just really hoping to finish detention early so I could join the after-school Clubs,” I answered softly, keeping my head slightly bowed. She was an unpleasant woman at the best of times and could really make someone’s life difficult if you got on her bad side. And since she was the one in charge of handing out detention duties, I couldn’t afford to upset her even a little bit.Especially with how often I’ve already been sent here this term.“Let’s see,” she said, pulling up the email pertaining to why I was sent here today. “You refused to clean yourself up after an accident.” She looked up at m
“You need to let me rest for a minute, you monster,” he shouted breathlessly, taking a step backwards.“But your enemies wont wait for you to be well rested, now will they,” I retorted, taking another step towards him. “It’s now or never, little Duncan.”He growled. “I’m not that much smaller than you, monster,” he shouted back, determination starting to fill his features. Instead of retreating another step, he held his ground and dropped into an attacking posture.Anymore thought of avoiding the fight was washed away, and replaced with a mighty roar as he charged towards me. He struck out at me with a solid right hook, and he growled again when I took hold of his hand and swung him around, almost like we were dancing. This was the reason why they all called me Twinkle here, because all I ever did was dance when they tried to fight me.“Your too obvious,” I said in a level voice once I let go. He stumbled for a moment before regaining his balance, turning to charge again. “You need to
BenjaminAs Ben followed the Principal into the cafeteria, he could barely hold in his irritation. When he was sent on this mission by the Alpha King himself, Ben pleaded to be allowed to join this territories version of post school Warrior training. Instead, in his infinite wisdom, the Alpha King decided that joining High School would be a better fit.True, he had just recently turned 16 and acquired his wolf, and had been a Junior back home, but as a visiting dignitary, he would’ve been allowed to pretty much do as he pleased. And since his whole backstory for being here revolved around seeing firsthand how strong the Blade’s Edge Pack was, it totally made sense why he should’ve skipped the whole school bit.Ben couldn’t be too angry, though, as the Luna Queen made it clear that she didn’t want him to fall behind in his studies just because he was picked for this mission. His first mission, to be clear, as most Warriors in the Briar Kingdom wouldn’t be eligible until they came of ag
Ben“I didn’t realize your sister was the same age as us,” Ben asked as they stood up. “I would’ve thought she was much younger.”“Adopted sister,” Misty corrected as she hooked his arm again. “And she’s only a freshman, but since she has no friends, all she does is study. I was against her taking advanced classes with us, but grandfather put his foot down. The senile old fool.”“He’s not senile,” Chris argued back as they made their way outside for Clubs. Ben had learned throughout the day that this territory saved their specialized classes for after school clubs. It was a good idea, he thought, and would see if his Alpha King would want to adopt a similar structure back home. “At least most of the time.”Alpha Lord Roland, as they called their Kings here in this territory, was a legend, even back in the Briar Kingdom. The Thunder Pack, who used to rule this territory, were among the most elite anywhere, and were undefeated in battle throughout their history. And yet, they were wiped
AylaEveryone was there when I entered the dining room.Alpha Lord Grizzle was siting in his usual spot at the head of the table with Luna Lannie sitting to his left. Misty was sitting next to her, and Chris was sitting on his father’s right. Two other servants were standing against the wall, ready to serve as needed. The smells from the kitchen had been taunting me for the past hour, and standing here now, seeing all the delicious foods spread over the table, made my mouth water.I stood at the opposite end of the table from Lord Grizzle, my hands held against my lower back, and my head down. This wasn’t the first time was called in during family dinner time, and I like last time, Luna Lannie seemed to want to make me wait. She no doubt hoped that the food in front of me would weaken my resolve. And she wasn’t wrong. It took fifteen minutes of waiting before their conversations came to a halt and all eyes were on me as the Luna finally spoke.“Tomorrow night we will be hosting the ne
“Hold still, or I’ll really give you something to cry about,” Luna Lannie seethed, crashing her aura into me. Biting my lip to keep from crying out, feeling lightheaded already, I braced as Margret tightened my corset even more.Ben, Maize, and their friends left school as soon as they recieved the call that their parents had arrived, leaving me alone with Misty and her friends. However, instead of resorting back to the their usual bullying, they continued on as they had this morning, talking about guys in the lewdest way possible. I learned more about my male classmates than I ever wanted too, and all the tips they were giving me to make sure Ben stuck around were still making my ears steam.Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when we returned home. As soon as I was through the door, Margaret stormed up and dragged me away to change. Practically screaming at me and whacking me with her stick for hours as I helped to clean the house and prepare for the dinner. I was a mess
This was by far the best day of school I’d ever had.Instead of classes, we had a pep rally followed by a series of games and competitions. Every year before this, ever since I first came to live in this Pack, I wasn’t allowed to participate. Instead, I was shuttled off to the lodge to begin cleaning and setting up for the weekend festivities.“Come on, I’ll race you to the top,” Ben challenged all of us when we reached the rock-climbing pillars. Ten in total, standing side by side in a row, they were one of the many pieces of equipment brought over from the Warrior Training facility for the day. And once school ended, they would be trasnported over to the lodge for the remainder of the weekend. “Loser pays the next diner bill.”“Your on,” Chris and Dillan say in unison and the other guys are right there behind them. Misty and her friends excused themselves, but Maize seemed even more excited then the guys. She was one very competitive chick. My back was throbbing with each step at th
“Why is she in here?”“And why is she naked?”“She must’ve been punished again, those bandages look fresh.”My eyes shot open to the sound of laugher, and they nearly popped out of my head when I looked over my shoulder to see Lacy, Evelyn, and Bethany standing over me. Scrambling away from them on instinct, I felt the wounds on my back tear. Then, just to prove that the Goddess hated me, I ended up tipping backwards off of bed, slamming into the ground with a solid thud. They exploded into laughter, leaving me to groan in both pain and embarrassment. After much struggling, I got onto my knees and slowly peeked over the edge of the bed. I quickly realized that I was in Misty’s room, and a few faint memories from a couple hours ago flooded into my head. After Rosie applied the silver and treated my back, Misty carried me up here and we took a bath together. I was so weak by that point that I couldn’t even lift my arms, let alone clean myself, so she had to do all the work. Even now, my
I was just so tired.I’d somehow fallen asleep at the diner, the extra shake I was given seemed to push me over the edge. The shot Rosie gave me this morning had started to fade after Clubs, and without it, I could barely stay awake while Misty and Maize took me shopping. It was a dream come true of mine, to be able to go into a store and spend hours trying on new things. Instead, I was angry with myself for spending the entire time in a daze.“Good night,” I said through a yawn as I hugged Maize.“And a good night to you too, Ayla,” Maize said back, hugging me tight. She also kissed me on the cheek, but unlike the confused flutters I got when Misty did that, this one left a warm tingle in my stomach. “Make sure you get plenty of sleep tonight since you didn't get any yesterday. A girl needs her beauty rest.”“I will, mom,” I teased, earning me a ruffled head. Then my breath was taken away when Ben moved up and, before I knew it, had his lips pressed against mine.Delirious already, I
Misty“I wanted to apologize again for my behavior up till now,” she said to Maize as they waited outside the changing room for Ayla. “I’m sure you know how overbearing parents can be, especially hot-headed Alpha’s. He might come off as uncaring and cruel, but he’s only doing it because he loves Ayla.”“How do you mean,” Maize asked, giving her a strange look. Misty knew in that moment that she had her counterpart from the Briar Kingdom in the palm of her hand.“Our ways might seem harsh to outsiders,” Misty explained, feigning sadness. “Our weaker elements are sent off to the smaller and more rural Pack's in our territory. Only the strongest are permitted to live here, to go to school here, and to train here. We are like the Spartans of old. Therefore, Ayla never should’ve been allowed to stay here. But father refused to let my sister be forced out. As a compromise, he told the Pack to toughen her up as best they could.”Maizie sighed after a time. “I guess I can understand that. My
Only it never came.Peaking out from behind my backpack, I was met with numerous confused faced. One of the mother’s laughed when she figured out what was going on.“I’m sorry, Ayla,” she said, stepping forward before squatting down a few feet in front of me. Her hands were up, showing she didn’t mean me any harm. “I guess I can’t blame you for reacting this way after yesterday. What with us rushing over here like that?”The other parents started to laugh too and one of the fathers came forward next to the first woman. It took me a moment to regconzine them.“Mr. and Mrs. Lecter,” I said, still hiding behind my bag. They were Duncan’s parents. As if to further prove it, Duncan barged through the crowd to stand between his parents and me.“I won’t let you hurt our Luna again,” he shouted, glaring at them.I groaned. “Duncan, you can’t call me that outside of the cage. You shouldn’t even call me that inside either.”His mother and several others chuckled as his antics. He wasn’t backing
It was strange having Misty and the others pretending to be nice to me all day, baffling many of our classmates and teachers.“What’s going on anyway,” Mr. Davidson asked as he walked me over to the Middle School after the final bell rang. He told Chris and Misty to take charge of warmups until he returned. “I thought I was seeing things when Dillian ran in before fourth period to bring you your crutches. I knew for a fact that they had disappeared yesterday before I could collect them. I requested a set to be brought over from the clinic, but the Principal shot that down. But just now, did I really see Misty showing some affection towards you?”My face heated up, hating that he noticed. Ever since lunch, Misty had been acting like the perfect big sister, not even threatening me or putting pressure on my back. Hugs, compliments, and more pain free physical contact than I’d ever really known. She even had me sit in her lap before Mr. Davidson’s last class started so she could massage m
“Ayla, could you stick around for a minute,” Mr. Davidson asked at the end of fourth period. “We need to discuss your behavior at Club yesterday.”Several of my classmates snickered as they left to go to lunch, everyone in the entire Pack already seemed to know that I pissed off Cythia somehow yesterday. I waited in my seat until the room was empty, then made my way up front as Mr. Davidson shut the door.“Mrs. Louis mentioned that you were looking for me yesterday,” he began, leaning against his desk.I held up my right arm. “I got burned again before school and was hoping to ask if you had anymore of that medicine.”“And how did you get burned this time,” he asked, his voice hard, causing me to keep my eyes on his shoes.“I can’t tell you that, sir,” I said softly. He sighed. “And I suppose you can’t tell me what happened last night between you and Rosie? She called me this morning with some bull about seeing to your treatment.”“That’s what she was doing, sir,” I answered truthfull
“Ayla, are you alright,” Maize said urgently the moment I reached the parking lot later that morning. “Why did you leave in the middle of the night? I’m sorry for falling asleep like that?”She wrapped me in a tight hug as soon as she reached me and my vision blurred when she touched the fresh wounds on my back. I must’ve made a sound because she pulled away quickly, leaning down till her eyes were level with mine.“I’m fine, really,” I said, forcing a smile. Rosie gave me another shot when I woke up, once again making it feel like I’d gotten a full night’s rest. She wasn’t allowed to give me anything for the pain, however, so every time I moved was a struggle. It was also why I carried my backpack in my hands, rather than on my back.“Why did you leave,” Maize asked, her voice getting a bit angrier.“I needed to go home for my medicine and treatment,” I answered truthfully. “I need to take my medicine every morning, and I was due for a treatment last night. That was why Rosie was esc
