After fleeing from class, I stressed my injured leg to the max to make it to office before anyone could chase me down. I knew I was being paranoid, but it was always better to play it safe. Mrs. Lennit looked up quickly from behind her computer when I came crashing in, startled.
“Good heavens, what’s the rush young lady,” she said, fixing me with a disapproving look.
“Sorry, Mrs. Lennit, I was just really hoping to finish detention early so I could join the after-school Clubs,” I answered softly, keeping my head slightly bowed. She was an unpleasant woman at the best of times and could really make someone’s life difficult if you got on her bad side. And since she was the one in charge of handing out detention duties, I couldn’t afford to upset her even a little bit.
Especially with how often I’ve already been sent here this term.
“Let’s see,” she said, pulling up the email pertaining to why I was sent here today. “You refused to clean yourself up after an accident.” She looked up at me again, taking me in from head to toe, before pulling up the list of available duties. My face was on fire the entire time.
“Your hair and sweatshirt are filthy, so make sure to do some laundry before tomorrow, am I understood,” she said sternly as she looked over the list.
“Yes, ma’am,” I replied. It was common knowledge by now that my wardrobe was very limited, and that the Alpha Lord and Luna wanted it that way. I knew for a fact that there was a box of spare cloths behind her desk that students could borrow if a wardrobe malfunction took place. That box was off limits to me, however.
“It looks like Mr. Davidson put in a request just before lunch,” she said, more to herself than to me. A cruel smile spread across her face as she looked back over at me. “He needs someone to go help oversee the Beginner Warrior Club today, since he will need to work with the Advanced Club. That young man Benjamin will be there today, and everyone is anxious to see what he can do.”
I put on my best haunted expression, which made her chuckle.
“Off with you now, and perhaps this will be a good lesson for you,” she lectured. “In fact, in the hopes of making sure you stop getting detention, I will place you with those little devils every time your sent here from now on. Am I understood?”
“Yes, ma’am,” I answered, trying to sound petulant.
“Off with you than,” she said, waving dismissively, and I turned to leave at once before my smile could show.
Once again Mr. Davidson came to my rescue, all without letting anyone know what he was doing. Mrs. Lennit’s reaction to the Beginner Warrior Club was shared by just about everyone in the school. The Elementary, Middle, and High Schools all shared the same campus, with all three building’s surrounding the central commons. However, when it came to after school clubs, each school had their own space housed behind their respective buildings. And the space for the Elementary kids had a chain linked fence around it.
To protect everyone else from them.
Exiting the building, I set across the commons towards said cage.
The students in the Middle and High School’s were in Misty and Chris’s pockets and cared about only two things. Social status in the Pack, and Warrior status in the Clubs. Every activity offered for the mandatory after school Club time revolved around those two things. Chief amongst them were the Warrior Clubs.
The High School version was the Advanced Warrior Club, while the Middle School housed the Intermediate Warrior Club. And, naturally, the one I was headed for was the Beginner Warrior Club. And unlike the other two, very few of the kids there cared for social status.
All they cared about was being the best fighters, and it often resulted in uncontrolled chaos. Mr. Davidson was one of the few who could actually get them to pay attention long enough to teach them anything before they simply resorted to brawling amongst themselves. If he wasn't there, like today, then the teachers in charge simply let them do what they wanted. Only stepping in if someone was about to get hurt.
Mr. Grant saw me coming and a look of relief spread over his face before he waved, then proceeded to go back inside. I liked Mr. Grant, and I think he tolerated me, but obviously neither of us could show it openly. However, I didn’t have long to worry about being the only chaperone present before a group of five came rushing over to me.
Duncan was their leader, and probably the strongest in the cage. Next to him were two boys and two girls, each as mean and menacing as the next. All five of them were set to graduate to Middle School at the end of this year, and it made me a little sad knowing they would never be this carefree again. As such, they were already starting to hit the first phases of their growth spurts, making them nearly as tall as me.
“Rematch, right now, Twinkle,” Duncan shouted when he was about five feet away from me. “I almost beat my brother the other day, and I know I’ll get him next time if I can manage to finally pin you down.”
The mean looks his friends were trying to hold started to fade, and before I knew it, all four came rushing over to hug me, nearly toppling me to the ground. The rest of the students came running over as well, giggling and telling me all about what they’d done since the last time I was there. I listened and responded as best I could, but they were all talking over one another so it was all but impossible.
Duncan allowed it for about a minute before his patience finally faded, and he growled, using his aura to scare away the rest. I fixed him with a hard look.
“You know your not supposed to do that, Duncan,” I said, my turn to scold. “And if I catch you doing it again, then you will have to sit the rest of today’s Club time on the timeout bench.”
Fear filled his eyes. “I’m sorry, please don’t bench me. I really need your help. I can’t let my brother beat me again.”
I shook my head, trying not to smile. “Your brother is two years older than you, and in the Intermediate Club. You’re not supposed to beat him, not until you both graduate school. Just be happy that you can hold your own for now.”
“I refuse to accept that,” he shouted, his eyes pleading. “Please, I’ll do anything. The next time he beats me and rubs my face in the mud, I don’t think I’ll survive.”
Sighing, I shook my head. He was such the dramatic one, but I never could say no to pleading eyes like that. “Fine, but not until the end. If you impress me today, than I’ll give you a one on one lesson right at the end.”
Joy filled his face and he then proceeded to help me round up the rest of the cubs. Not once during did he complain either as I led them through the warmup and basics. First, we jogged around the inside of the cage a couple times, increasing our speed with each lap. Then we did stretches before finally moving into the muscle memory exercises.
Every few minutes I would have them practice a certain maneuver, block, strike, or grapple, then they would repeat them over and over again until I was satisfied. The jog put even more strain on my injured leg, and I had to fight hard to keep from limping in front of the cubs. I was glad to see that they still recalled most of the moves from the last time I was there, and so I only had to correct a few things here and there.
Later on, once they were all breathing hard and crying for a break, I nodded to Duncan.
“Are you ready,” I asked, smiling when his face turned sour.
“You need to let me rest for a minute, you monster,” he shouted breathlessly, taking a step backwards.“But your enemies wont wait for you to be well rested, now will they,” I retorted, taking another step towards him. “It’s now or never, little Duncan.”He growled. “I’m not that much smaller than you, monster,” he shouted back, determination starting to fill his features. Instead of retreating another step, he held his ground and dropped into an attacking posture.Anymore thought of avoiding the fight was washed away, and replaced with a mighty roar as he charged towards me. He struck out at me with a solid right hook, and he growled again when I took hold of his hand and swung him around, almost like we were dancing. This was the reason why they all called me Twinkle here, because all I ever did was dance when they tried to fight me.“Your too obvious,” I said in a level voice once I let go. He stumbled for a moment before regaining his balance, turning to charge again. “You need to
BenjaminAs Ben followed the Principal into the cafeteria, he could barely hold in his irritation. When he was sent on this mission by the Alpha King himself, Ben pleaded to be allowed to join this territories version of post school Warrior training. Instead, in his infinite wisdom, the Alpha King decided that joining High School would be a better fit.True, he had just recently turned 16 and acquired his wolf, and had been a Junior back home, but as a visiting dignitary, he would’ve been allowed to pretty much do as he pleased. And since his whole backstory for being here revolved around seeing firsthand how strong the Blade’s Edge Pack was, it totally made sense why he should’ve skipped the whole school bit.Ben couldn’t be too angry, though, as the Luna Queen made it clear that she didn’t want him to fall behind in his studies just because he was picked for this mission. His first mission, to be clear, as most Warriors in the Briar Kingdom wouldn’t be eligible until they came of ag
Ben“I didn’t realize your sister was the same age as us,” Ben asked as they stood up. “I would’ve thought she was much younger.”“Adopted sister,” Misty corrected as she hooked his arm again. “And she’s only a freshman, but since she has no friends, all she does is study. I was against her taking advanced classes with us, but grandfather put his foot down. The senile old fool.”“He’s not senile,” Chris argued back as they made their way outside for Clubs. Ben had learned throughout the day that this territory saved their specialized classes for after school clubs. It was a good idea, he thought, and would see if his Alpha King would want to adopt a similar structure back home. “At least most of the time.”Alpha Lord Roland, as they called their Kings here in this territory, was a legend, even back in the Briar Kingdom. The Thunder Pack, who used to rule this territory, were among the most elite anywhere, and were undefeated in battle throughout their history. And yet, they were wiped
AylaEveryone was there when I entered the dining room.Alpha Lord Grizzle was siting in his usual spot at the head of the table with Luna Lannie sitting to his left. Misty was sitting next to her, and Chris was sitting on his father’s right. Two other servants were standing against the wall, ready to serve as needed. The smells from the kitchen had been taunting me for the past hour, and standing here now, seeing all the delicious foods spread over the table, made my mouth water.I stood at the opposite end of the table from Lord Grizzle, my hands held against my lower back, and my head down. This wasn’t the first time was called in during family dinner time, and I like last time, Luna Lannie seemed to want to make me wait. She no doubt hoped that the food in front of me would weaken my resolve. And she wasn’t wrong. It took fifteen minutes of waiting before their conversations came to a halt and all eyes were on me as the Luna finally spoke.“Tomorrow night we will be hosting the ne
I turned and fled from the room without a word, heading straight for the basement. Most of it was furnished into a large game room, complete with couches, tv’s, a large bar, and every kind of tabletop game there was. What most people didn’t know was that there was a secret door hidden behind the bar that led to the utility area for the Manor. And located there was a closet where my bedroom was, a very old set of washer and dryers, and a little bathroom.Taking all of my clothes off, and cursing myself for not remembering to grab my bag after working with the Beginner Club, I put everything in the washer and set it to do a quick wash. After that, I padded to the concrete shower area and braced myself as cold water sprayed out. The shower wasn’t attached to the hot water heater, which meant cold was my only option. Being sneaky when I was little, I did tap into the line and ran a pipe to the shower, but the punishment I received when it was discovered was so bad that I never tried it ag
Waking up after falling asleep as a wolf always sucked. For starters, staying in wolf form for so long took a lot of energy out of us. Most people only stayed in it when needed, and they always made sure to load up on calories beforehand. For me, it felt like I didn’t sleep at all, and I was even hungrier than when I went to bed.Secondly, and more pressing at the moment, was the fact that I always ended up shifting back to my human form at some point while still asleep. Which meant I was naked and freezing when the alarm eventually went off.“This s-sucks,” I complained, shivering so bad that it was a wonder I could dress again. When I finally managed it, I sprinted back to the little gate under the house and went inside. After brushing my teeth and removing all the leaves and twigs out of my hair, I dressed and packed some spare cloths in a plastic bag since my backpack was still at school somewhere.Luna Lannie was in the dining room eating breakfast when I reported for inspection.
The school wasn’t very far from the Manor, only about a fifteen-minute walk. Both Chris and Misty received brand new cars when they turned sixteen, and they drove themselves and their friends too and from school every day. I would’ve preferred to take the shortcut through the forest to reach the school, but Misty forbid me from doing so once she started driving. Just so she and her friends could drive past me and laugh every morning. If I was lucky. If I wasn’t, then they would try to throw something at me instead. More than once I was burned by hot coffee, or bruised from being hit by some fruit or vegetable that came with their breakfast. One time I was hit by an apple, and it hit me just right to sprout a gash on the top of my head. I needed stitches for that one, just to stop the bleeding long enough for my slower than normal healing to kick in.Today was worse than all of those combined.“Looking good, clown,” Lacy called out from the front seat of Misty’s convertible, causing th
Duncan and the other cubs were really sweet when I arrived. Not only did Duncan apologize again for hitting me, but they also showed me where they hid my backpack so no one would steal it until I came back for it. They were also really eager to start Club, and didn’t even complain this time when we started with the, boring, warm-ups and stretches. I would have to thank Mr. Davidson later, since it was clear he must’ve given them a stern talking to about behaving.Today, once some of the cubs showed they were ready for the next step, I had them pair off with each other and take turns practicing the moves we’d been practicing on a living target. Those I selected were overjoyed, and the ones I didn’t think were ready yet worked twice as hard so as not to be left behind. By the time it was over, I found it difficult to leave.Knowing what was waiting for me in a few hours scared the hell out of me, but I also knew I couldn’t hide with the cubs much longer either. We already extended our t
The look on Ben’s face when I opened the door almost made me giggle. With how nervous I was, however, all I could manage was a small smile as he openly gaped at me for an uncomfortably long few seconds. Thankfully, for once, the appearance of my siblings and their friends saved me from having to say anything.Chris’s friends all whistled at me and said nice, although dirty, things, while Misty’s friends eyed me up critically. They would never be caught dead complimenting me, but they also couldn’t seem to find any flaws to nitpick either. It probably also helped that they knew Luna Lannie was responsible, and so any critiques of my appearance would be a critique of her work.“You look,” Ben said after the rest of the group rushed outside excitedly, heading for their cars. “Wow, I hardly even recognized you.”“You look very handsome too,” I said, smiling again despite my crippling fear. And it wasn’t even a lie, as the outfit he picked out made him look even more perfect that normal. I
Everyone was so excited about the bonfire later tonight that I was left alone for most of the day. Only during lunch did I have to deal with Misty and her friends. Being the king and queen of the school, no one argued when Misty and Chris combined their tables so they could all eat together. With Ben sitting right in the middle of both groups.Since we needed to play along, Misty had some other freshman girl come over to be the tables servant instead of me. I felt bad for her, but it was made clear quite quickly that she was more than happy to do so. Every girl in the school would give just about anything to get closer to Misty. That didn’t mean I was off the hook however.“What’s the matter, poppet,” Ben asked near the end of lunch, using his special nickname for me. “You look uncoforatable. Is your diet shake not agreeing with you? You really should eat normal food, it’s foolish to think that you need to lose weight.”That was a lie Misty and Chris came up with for why I never ate s
“You look like shit,” Rosie said as soon as I walked into her clinic.“I’m sorry, the cubs are relentless in Club,” I said, breathing hard after having ran all the way here. I didn’t think I could handle getting cornered in the woods by Ben. It was bad enough that Rose could probably still smell his scent on me.Rosie looked around to make sure the coast was clear, before stepping closer. This was never a good sign, and I braced for whatever bomb she wanted to drop. “Please, Ayla, let me give you a checkup. I promise that no one will ever find out, and no matter what I find, it will just stay between you and me.”Placing my best smile on my face, I laughed and waved her concern away. “I’m fine, really. Where would you like me today, ma’am? Did that shipment come in this morning?”Rosie glared into my soul for the longest time before she sighed. “It’s already taken care of, but you can help out in L-Term. Seven new patients were admitted today, so they have their hands full over there.
The next two days were amongst the worst ever.Word spread like wildfire, and before I even stepped foot inside the school, everyone knew that Ben and I were a thing. Many of the guys who used to ignore me completely, even the ones who were cruel with their words, suddenly tried to hit on me. It was awkward, and with how little sleep I got, my mind couldn’t seem to find the words to respond. So, I just ducked my head and tried to flee whenever I could. That was bad enough, but nothing compared to the girls. With how much attention I was suddenly getting, not to mention the fact that many of the stronger females had their sights on Ben for themselves, I was declared enemy number one. I lost count of how many times I was tripped, had my belongings knocked from my hands, elbowed, had my hair pulled, ridiculed, or punished in some countless other ways. The worst was when Misty’s friends cornered me every time Ben pulled me away to some secluded room in the school for some alone time. The
BenHe had to get away as fast as he could. For years now, he’d been fighting off girls trying to win his affection. When his brother was still alive, it was like a fun game that they played together, but since his death over a year ago, Ben killed that part of himself off.Or so he thought. This girl was good, very good, managing to hit him in all of his weak spots. Pretending to be a victim, working with the cubs, and challenging even his abilities to track a scent through the woods. It was like the Goddess placed this perfect harpy right in his path, just when he was so close to finally finding the man who killed his brother. But at least now he had the upper hand. He called her out for the temptress that she was, and now he had a valid leverage to make use of her going forward. Unless she pretended to be his conquest, then he would cut ties with her completely, which would put her on the wrong side of her parent’s ire. A girl like her couldn’t stand losing her extensive allowance.
“Good, now that the charade is over, we can get down to business,” Ben said, rolling off of me and getting back to his feet. He didn’t offer a hand, and that was probably for the best. In our struggle, I could feel that my cut had reopened and blood had started to soak into the thin glove in my right hand. After getting to my feet, I tucked my arm behind my back to hide it.“Now, I will tell everyone that you successfully seduced me and that you were a lot of fun,” he said, each word a further stab to my heart. “That way your family won’t get mad that you failed in your mission. In return, however, you will tell me everything I want to know about your grandfather.”“Why are you so interested in him,” I said, my voice still so numb and cold. I needed this to end quickly.“I have no interest in him, exactly,” Ben said, finally sounding normal again, instead of that scary and dangerous side I saw a moment ago. “My true goal, apart from helping to form an alliance with your Pack, is to tr
Ben smirked at he as I looked up at him again after the silence dragged on for too long, a look of victory in his eyes.Turning towards father, he finally spoke. “Alpha Lord Grizzle, would you mind if your daughter Ayla walked me home? Luna Lannie, the meal was delicious, and I look forward to the next time I’m invited to the Manor. Chris, Misty, I’ll see you both in the morning, I had a lot of fun today with you and your friends.”He stood up and walked around the table, holding his hand out for me to take.My heart began hammering again as I looked at my parents, wide eyed with freight.“Of course,” father said, getting to his feet as well. “And consider yourself invited for dinner every night. We will have a place ready for you at the table.”Mother stood as well, but her eyes were boring into me instead. “Ayla, my sweet, hurry right home after. We need to go over your homework.” Her aura pressed down on me just enough to make it clear that if I said anything dangerous, then I woul
It felt like my heart was going to explode right out of my chest. For the first time since I was ten and first moved into this house, I was allowed to eat at the table with my family. Sitting next to Misty normally would’ve made me nervous, like it did at lunch today, but it was the person sitting across from me that held my whole attention.Even though I made a point to never actually look at him.Ben sat right in front of me, and my heart fluttered every time I felt his eyes on me, which meant it was fluttering nonstop. Despite the fact that I was wearing thinner cloths than ever before in recent memory, I felt like I was going to melt.“You look nice tonight, Ayla,” Ben said to me after about twenty minutes of making small talk with my parents. A dropped my spoon, it startled me so much.“Th-thank you,” I stammered out quietly, my eyes just barely peaking up to meet his, before darting back down to my tasteless soup. My usual shake had simply been put into a bowl and called soup.
It took my entire three-hour shift to carry everything to where it needed to go.Since our Pack’s main source of income was in mercenary work, selling our Warriors to the highest bidders amongst other Packs and even to the humans, our Clinic always needed to be well stocked. Therefore, there was never a shortage of hard manual labor needed to keep things organized and stocked. However, I did take a small break to visit the Long Term Ward, where those with the more serious injuries were housed.I helped the nurses there for a while, doing what little I could, because I knew exactly how they must’ve felt. It was only a matter of time before I ended up in a place like this someday, thanks to my illness, and by helping them it helped me come to terms with my future. It also helped that they were always in high spirits, and could always make me laugh by the time I had to go. There was even two new members today, both injured in the final battle against the Bloodmoon Vampires just a few day
