SHEILA

I walk into the cozy café where I'm suppose to meet Kate and Rachel, my heart sinking with every step. The past few days have been tough, and all I need right now is some quality time with my best friends. As I spot them at our favorite corner table, a smile finally tugs at the corners of my lips.

"Hey, you two,” I greet them, trying my best to sound cheerful.

Rachel and Kate both look up, their faces lighting up with warmth. "Sheila Green, it's about time," Rachel lets out, waving me over.

I slide into the seat next to Kate, and she immediately reaches out to squeeze my hand. "How are you holding up, sweetie?" she asks, concern evident in her eyes.

I let out a sigh, my shoulders slumping. "Honestly, it's been tough. Losing both Chris and my job was a blow I didn't see coming."

Rachel nods sympathetically. "I can't believe that asshole could do that to you and I can't believe your boss let you go like that. It's their loss, Sheila."

"Exactly,” Kate chimes in. "You're talented and amazing at what you do. Don't let those setbacks define you."

Their support means the world to me, and I feel a bit of the heaviness in my heart lift. "Thanks. I really appreciate it. And you guys won't believe it. I ran into Zachary at the café.

Rachel and Kate share a look.

“Oh my God!” Rachel exclaims.

"Zachary? Your old boss? The one who broke your heart?" Kate asks, her eyebrows shooting up.

I nod. "Yeah, that's the one. Can you believe it? Of all the times.”

Rachel cringes. "Yikes."

"It was surprisingly not as awkward as I thought it would be. We chatted for a bit, and then he dropped a bombshell—he offered me a job at his company."

The moment I say it, Rachel and Kate exchange glances, and I can practically see the wheels turning in their heads.

"Oh, no, no, no," Rachel says, wagging her finger. "Remember, he broke your heart once. Don't give him the chance to do it again."

Kate nods in agreement. "Rachel's right. You should stay away from him, Sheila."

I purse my lips, considering their words. "But it's just a job, right? We weren't even a thing when it happened."

"Still," Rachel insists. "Working with an ex can be messy, and I don't want to see you hurt again."

"But there's also the money,” Kate interjects. "It could be a great opportunity for you financially. I mean, you're out of a job with no means of survival."

I drum my fingers on the table, torn between their advice. "I guess you're both right. I'll have to think it through."

Just then, the server approaches to take our orders. We place them, and I can't help but feel grateful for the support of my friends.

Rachel leans forward, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "So, any juicy details about your conversation with Zachary?"

I deapan, shaking my head. "Sorry to disappoint, but it was just a casual chat. No fireworks or anything."

Kate raises an eyebrow. "Are you sure? You've always had chemistry with him."

I blush, recalling those days. "Yeah, well, it's been years. We've both changed."

Rachel winks. "True, but some things never change. Chemistry is one of them."

I roll my eyes playfully. "Alright, alright, enough teasing. Let's change the subject."

As we dig into our delicious meals, the conversation flows effortlessly from one topic to another. Laughter fills the air, and I can't help but feel a sense of comfort and contentment in their presence.

Once we finish eating, Rachel suggests we go shopping to lift my spirits, and Kate wholeheartedly agrees. Shopping therapy has always been our thing, and I can't resist their infectious enthusiasm.

I pull open the door to the boutique, greeted by the soft chime of the bell. Rachel and Kate follow closely behind me, their eyes widening with excitement. "Girls, it's time for some retail therapy!" I exclaim, already feeling the thrill of finding perfect outfits.

Rachel grins, her eyes sparkling. "I'm so ready for this! I need a pick-me-up after that horrible week at work."

Kate nods in agreement. "I hear you, Rachel. Let's shop till we drop!"

We dive into the racks, each of us finding pieces that catch our eye. Rachel holds up a vibrant red dress, twirling it around. "What do you think of this one, guys?"

I glance at the dress and then at Rachel's complexion. "Oh, that color would look stunning on you, Rachel! You'll turn heads for sure."

Kate nods enthusiastically. "Definitely a winner! You need to get it."

Rachel grins, adding the dress to her pile. "Alright, sold. Let's see what you two have found."

I hold up a flowy floral skirt, raising an eyebrow at the pattern. "What do you think of this? I'm not sure if it's too much."

Kate examines it and then looks at me mischievously. "Oh, Sheila, you can totally pull it off. Plus, think about all the twirling you can do in that skirt.”

I laugh, imagining myself twirling like a carefree child. "You're right. Sold to the twirling queen."

Kate claps her hands together dramatically. "And for our last contestant in the fashion show, we have Kate with... this adorable striped crop top.”

I laugh, grabbing the top from her hands. "Alright, alright. I can't resist a good crop top."

We continue browsing through the store, each of us finding unique pieces that suit our individual styles. As we make our way to the fitting rooms, Kate suggests, "Why don't we have a little fashion show in there? We can rate each other's outfits.”

Rachel and I exchange amused glances. "Alright, let's do it!" I say, excited about the idea.

Inside the fitting rooms, we take turns trying on our chosen outfits and stepping out to show them off to each other. Rachel looks stunning in the red dress, and Kate rocks the striped crop top with high-waisted jeans. They both shower me with compliments when I twirl in my floral skirt.

"This skirt was made for twirling, Sheila.” Rachel declares.

"It's official. You are the twirling queen!" Kate adds, grinning.

I strike a dramatic pose. "Bow down to your twirling queen.”

We all burst into laughter, feeling giddy and carefree. It's amazing how a little shopping and laughter with friends can lift your spirits.

As we leave the boutique, our arms laden with shopping bags, we spot an ice cream parlor across the street. "Ice cream break?" Rachel suggests, and we all nod enthusiastically.

We settle into a cozy corner of the parlor, the sweet aroma of ice cream filling the air. Each of us orders our favorite flavors, and as we dig into our ice cream, we share funny stories and reminisce about our adventures together.

Kate playfully nudges me. "Remember that time we went to the amusement park, and you screamed the whole way down the roller coaster?"

I blush, recalling the embarrassing memory. "Hey, I was just expressing my excitement in a unique way!"

Rachel giggles. "You definitely added some extra entertainment for the people around us."

I shake my head, laughing at myself. "Well, I'm glad I could be of service.”

The ice cream is the perfect ending to our shopping spree, and we walk back to our cars with smiles on our faces and full hearts. As we part ways, Rachel gives me a warm hug. "Thanks for today, Sheila. I needed this."

I hug her back, feeling grateful for these two amazing friends. "Anytime, Rachel. You know I'm always here for you."

Kate joins in on the hug, making it a group embrace. "Love you guys. This was exactly what I needed too."

"Love you too, Kate," I say, feeling the warmth of their friendship enveloping me.

"So, have you made up your mind about Zachary's job offer?" Rachel asks, raising an eyebrow.

I take a moment to consider it. "I think I'll have to meet with him and get more details about the job. It wouldn't hurt to explore the opportunity, right?"

Kate smiles. "No, it won't. Just remember to protect your heart, okay?"

I nod, feeling grateful for their unwavering support and love. "Thanks, you guys. I know I can always count on you."

Rachel grins. "Of course. That's what best friends are for—to have your back and make sure you don't make any silly decisions."

I laugh. "Yeah, yeah, you're both amazing. I don't know what I'd do without you."
