Chapter 28-Things are Looking Up

Caroline’s POV:

Martin’s offer was tempting, but my guilt was overwhelming. I already depended on him for so much, and while he assured me he was just trying to be a good friend, I was surely taking advantage of him. He was a charming gentleman who led a successful life, and if the shameless flirtation from that pretty doctor was anything to go by, he was going to have a girlfriend, too.

Who wouldn’t love such a warm and successful man? Maybe William, I thought with some humor. As for me, how could I continue to trouble him when he’d already dealt with so many of my other problems?

“I appreciate you, Martin,” I said at last, my voice gentle in its rejection, “but I can’t take your offer. I don’t want to be your burden, and besides, I can take care of my own problems.”

A worried frown settled deep into Martin’s face. “Caroline, you don’t have to worry. You’ll never become a burden to me. We’re friends, aren’t we? Friends help each other when they need it most. Who knows, maybe one day
