"We have good news. The trap worked. We have captured Seth's daughter!"

The room erupted in murmurs, the words spreading like wildfire as everyone stood, eyes wide, exchanging whispers.

A gavel struck the large podium, the sound silencing the chaos. "Hold your tongues!"

"Bring them to us!" the head council member commanded. "We would like to have a word with them both!"

In a dimly lit room nearby, Seth, Charlene, and their counsel, Idris, were huddled in tense discussion.

Idris paced, his brow knitted in worry. "We're in uncharted territory, Seth. When I went before the council earlier, they were bloodthirsty. This isn’t looking good for you. All is lost!" He threw up his hands in disgust, his feet pounding the floor as he resumed pacing.

"Charlene, you picked the worst time to show up! What on earth possessed you to come here?" he snapped.

Seth spun toward his daughter, grabbing her by the shoulders, shaking her with urgency. His voice softened, yet desperation clung to every word. "I'm so happy to see you, Princess."

He pulled her back, scanning her face. "Where’s your mother?"

Charlene quickly explained how her mother had sacrificed herself, helping her escape through a portal. "Mom sent me to help you."

Seth’s worry deepened, but he forced himself to focus. "If we can contact the Sec, if we can somehow send word that we’ve been captured, maybe there’s still hope."

Idris shook his head sharply. "I tried reaching out earlier when you were tortured. They wouldn't risk discovery for just one fate."

Charlene tugged at her father’s arm. "Why don’t we open a portal? We can escape to Earth and find Mom! Let’s leave now!"

Seth gestured to the sigils on the walls, frustration in his voice. "Look at those sigils. They keep us in. We can't leave the room... or this realm. If we could just make it outside..."

The door suddenly swung open.

"You are being summoned to the grand chamber."

A Fate stood in the doorway, pointing toward the hall.

Idris, Seth, and Charlene stepped out, the air thick with tension. As they walked, ReNew spoke to Charlene privately in her mind's eye.

ReNew’s voice was urgent. "We don’t have much time. Listen carefully. Don’t volunteer any information. Only speak when spoken to. Be as vague as possible. They don’t know you understand your soul spirit or that I even exist. Let your father and Idris handle this, okay?"

Moments later, they stood before the council, a dozen Fates seated high upon stools, their eyes fixed on the newcomers.

"Charlene!" Seth whispered urgently. "Stand behind me. Don’t say anything. Keep your head down. Try not to be noticed. Whatever happens, know that I love you. You can survive this, darling. Live to fight another day."

Seth quickly positioned Charlene behind him, shielding her as best as he could.

The head council member stood, gavel in hand. "You are sentenced to death!" His gavel pointed directly at Seth.

Idris stepped forward, voice strong despite the danger. "Whose will is this?!"

The head council member sneered. "It is the will of the council."

Seth's voice rang out with defiance. "Since when does the council have the authority? The One Spirit is the only one who can give or take life. Have you forgotten this, Head Council? This is the foundation of our society. I demand to speak to the First Spirit."

Idris added, "I second the request. We have the right to speak to the First Spirit."

The head council member’s face twisted in fury. "How dare you, filthy mongrels!" His nostrils flared, and the room grew tense.

Idris shot back, "We have every right to request judgment from the First. And that judgment will be final! Head Council, are you above the principles of this realm?!"

The council erupted in a chorus of approval, their voices rising in unison. "Yes! Approve! Call in the First Spirit!"

The doors to the chamber swung open once again, and a large glass box was brought forward. Two armored bearers unlocked it, revealing the original soul spear. Reverence filled the room as everyone bowed their heads.

Placed on a satin pillow, the spear gleamed in the light. The glass was removed, and the council spoke in unison.

"Speak to us now... First Spirit... First Soul... Bringer of Life."

Everyone rose, touching their soul marks in solemn reverence.

For over five hundred years, the Soul Spirit had remained silent, slumbering, forgotten by most. But now, illumination flooded the room, growing brighter by the second. The spear began to change, twisting and shifting until it took the form of a woman. She stood tall and regal, her long white robes flowing around her like a mist, hair as white as snow cascading to the floor. Her skin shimmered like bronze.

A chair was brought to her, and she settled with grace.

She opened her eyes, scanning the room, and spoke. "Your need must be great to wake me from my slumber. Speak to me, my children."

Idris glanced at Seth. "Man, make it count. Your life is on the line."

Charlene stared in awe at the Soul Spirit's beauty, unable to tear her gaze away.

In her mind’s eye, ReNew’s voice was urgent. What are you doing?

ReNew’s response came quickly. It wasn’t me.

The Soul Spirit waved her hand, beckoning Charlene forward.

"It was me, my child. We have much to discuss."

ReNew stepped back, a flicker of unease crossing her consciousness.

Charlene stepped forward, her heart racing.

"These changes are overwhelming for you," the Soul Spirit continued. "I hear your thoughts. While I slumber, I still hear and watch over my children. Yes, even on Earth. This is one of my gifts. By the way, I can hear your thoughts. No need for words."

Charlene’s voice trembled as she spoke, "Then you can help us? Please, don’t let them kill my father!"

The Soul Spirit smiled gently, her voice calm. "It’s not that simple, little one. For millennia, things have been done a certain way. But your father has broken the principal rule. They now demand judgment. We do not interfere with the journey."

She paused, eyes narrowing with a hint of sadness. "The old ways are outdated, my child. But evolution comes whether we are ready or not. You see, change is inevitable... and a war is already on the horizon."

The Soul Spirit’s voice softened. "Charlene, I have something to offer you..."

Unseen by the others, the Soul Spirit continued speaking with Charlene, her voice calm but with an undercurrent of something darker. Everyone else remained unaware, caught in the trance of the Spirit’s power.

"I have made my decision, and it is final. Seth and Idris, step forward."

"You will become elders," the Soul Spirit declared. "You will take a seat on the council. You will speak on behalf of the Sec. They now have a voice at the table."

"My children, great changes are coming. Evolutionary changes. The old ways are not bad... just outdated. At one time, the originals were forced to leave Earth. Do you remember that feeling when you encountered the Sec? Embrace these changes, for they are inevitable. We must evolve to survive."

The Soul Spirit smiled, her voice filled with finality. "There is more than one way of doing things."

She turned her gaze to Charlene. "Come forward, my child."

Charlene stepped out from behind her father, standing tall before the Soul Spirit. She turned to her father, mouthing the words, "It’s okay."

"Unfortunately, your father's punishment falls on you," the Soul Spirit continued. "Your father's role, before he left this realm and broke the First Principle, was to be a journeyer. You will take up his mantle. You will continue his work until it is no longer needed. And you are forbidden from returning to Earth. Do you understand?"

Charlene bowed her head in agreement. "This is the final judgment?"

With a curtsey, she stepped back.

The room fell silent as everyone bowed their heads in submission. In unison, they spoke: "The final word has been spoken. Let peace be restored."

A warm light bathed the room, and the Soul Spirit returned to her form as the spear, resting once more on the satin pillow. The glass was placed over it, and it was taken out of the room

Charlene lay awake, staring through the skylight. Her mind was racing with questions—too many to count. What had happened to her mom? Was she safe? Had she managed to escape that terrible fate? And then there were the worries about her own training. What if she messed up? What if she couldn't handle it? What would happen to the sect if she failed? Her thoughts were interrupted by a voice that seemed to come from nowhere."All your worries are giving me a headache! Go to sleep! Still following behind the young man, Charlene slowed her pace even further as she watched him enter a large domed building with pillars that were taller than the eye could extend, reaching into the clouds above. It was as though the structure had many stories, but none were visible from the outside. She proceeded toward the entrance of the building, passing the towering white ivory pillars slowly. Looking up, she heard a voice."Welcome, Daughter of Seth! 1st day of seminary. Proceed to your first session."Charlene felt a rush of excitement. For the first time since this all began, she felt special. She wasn't sure what to think of this place."What in the Harry Potter?" she muttered, her mouth hanging open in awe.She walked down the corridor. The interior was mostly glass, with no walls or doors, just floors separating the different levels. The structure seemed to go on forever."Where are the stairs or elevators?" she wondered aloud. When ReNew spoke sternly, "Close your mouth an

Standing in the midst of a lush garden, Seth paced slowly, his thoughts clearly wrestling with one another. He muttered under his breath, his brow furrowed, as though caught in an internal battle. Charlene watched him from a distance, unsure if she should speak or remain silent. Her instinct told her to stay out of his way, so she sat down cross-legged on a soft bed of fallen leaves, careful not to disturb her father.Should we say something? Renew’s voice echoed in her mind. What could we possibly say? Charlene thought back. A late-night council meeting? Since when? His mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. Seth stood watching his wife. What is this woman doing? he thought. Tamera was scanning the monitor, flipping through recent relays, searching for maps, trying to figure out where they were. All she knew was that they were in a cave... and there was sand everywhere. “Darn it!” she hissed, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Where are we? There’s gotta be some kind of map, some kind of coordinates...” Seth cleared his throat. “Tamera, what are you doing?” “Trying to learn how to work the screen, darling,” she lied—boldly. And he knew it. “In the war room?” he asked with a smirk. “I can help you with anything you need.” “That’s okay.” She forced a brittle smile onto her face. “Why don’t we go into our room?” His voice dropped, low and coaxing. “There are screens in there... and we can have some alone time.”

Ever since last night, Idris had a knot in his stomach he couldn’t untie. “For a human who’s just been in a demon domain,” he muttered under his breath, watching from the shadows of the corridor, “she doesn’t have a single scratch.” Don’t get him wrong—he was beyond relieved that they found Tamera. The woman meant a lot to this family. And he felt sick over what the First Spear had to give up to bring her back. If he could trade his right arm to heal her, he would do it in a heartbeat. But Tamera… something about her just didn’t sit right. The moment he hugged her, it was like holding a mannequin—stiff, unfamiliar. No warmth. No scent of lilac and sandalwood like before. Nobody else seemed to notice, too caught up in their emotions. Overjoyed she was alive, safe, returned to them. He didn’t want to kill the moment with his suspicions, but… He chewed his bottom lip. “How did she survive ou

He knew what she had done. She had sacrificed herself… for his love."Dad..." Charlene’s voice cracked. "Will she ever wake up?" She sniffled. "It’s been two days now."Her eyes were swollen, skin raw from crying. She looked so young in that moment, so helpless. The First Spear—her grandmother, Destiny—had exhausted nearly all of her energy fighting back the hordes of demons. Seth finally got his morning brew. He turned to pull out a chair, but before he could even take a sip, a hand shot out of nowhere. "Ummm—hot!" Argun winced, snatching the mug like a thief in the night. "Where did you come from?" Seth muttered, rolling his eyes. "Darn portals." Without another word, Argun downed the entire cup in one go. Steam hissed from his lips as he exhaled. "Aaah. Tasty." He slammed the empty mug down in approval. Seth blinked in disbelief. "Dude, really? Want another?" Just then, Charlene and ReNew entered the kitchen. The energy shifted instantly. Argun, without turning, spoke quietly. "Hello, little one." Shame still lingered in his voice—from the last time they’d met, when he obeyed Destiny’s command and left Charlene to fend for herself. "Argun!" Charlene ran full-force and hugged him from behind. A faint smile cracked across his face. "There’s no time for a reunion," he said, the light in his expression fading. "The First Spear needs our help."

The first orb was high in the morning sky. Seth was still stirring, not fully awake. "Gi-Gi?" he mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Why are you in my room?" He paused, noticing her unease. "Is everything okay?" "Yes and no," she replied softly, settling on the foot of his bed. She crossed her legs, smoothing the folds of her robes, buying herself time to choose her words. Turning her head slightly away, she spoke. "How attached are you to that?" She didn’t turn back around—she just waited. Seth, half-awake, instinctively twirled the chain around his neck, fingers brushing over the rings. “Oh—this? You mean the rings? Well…” His cheeks colored. He hadn't realized she’d noticed how often he fidgeted with it. "Attached? I guess… since Tamera’s been missing, I’ve just… I keep it close. It reminds me of her." He nudged a few loose pebbles over the edge with his foot. "Plop." The pebbles were immediately pulled under. "Well?" Idris asked, hands on his hips. "Well what, Uncle Idris?" Charlene blinked, confused. "Who's going in first?" he grinned. Seth rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Idris? Bro, c'mon." "What? It was your idea!" Charlene stepped closer. The lagoon's exact depth was unknown. Mist drifted upward like soft breath from the cavern’s throat, and warm, damp air clung to their skin. The stone walls wept slowly, glistening with sheets of mineral-rich water that painted them like ancient tapestries. It frizzed Charlene’s hair mercilessly. She caught her reflection in a smooth ripple of obsidian water and groaned inwardly. If only I had my cell phone, she thought. I could check my hair. She tried to smooth down her edges, hoping Issa didn’t notice her stealthy grooming. They walked slowly along the slick stone, boots squishing softly with each step. The cave opened wider the deeper they went, the lagoon stretching endlessly before them like some subterranean sea. The First Spear paused at the mouth of the cave, her presence stilling the air. "I sense a disturbance," she said. "You two are needed outside. I recommend handling this yourselves." She turned to go, her tone solemn. "Remember—these Fates are no longer under the Council’s rule. Everything has changed for them. Show grace." A soft blessing: "Be well." And she departed. "Wait, GiGi!" Charlene called after her. "I wanted to ask you something—" A distant voice floated back, almost amused. "We’ll talk later, sweetheart. Go ahead—you’re needed outside. I’ll be back." Seth and Charlene emerged from the cave into chaos. The air was thick with noise—shouts, sobs, and arguments swirling into the sky. Hundreds of Fates were packed tightly together, shoving, yelling, fraying at every edge.

Seth and the First Spear stood there awkwardly, saying nothing at first. The cave echoed with silence, the kind that grew louder with every passing moment. Seth's thoughts spun like a storm. Where do I start? I have so many questions. “Start anywhere,” she said gently. “I’ll answer your questions.” He blinked. “That’s right—you can read minds.” “Absolutely right. And emotions, just like you and Charlene.” Her tone was soft, steady, trying to ease the tension she could feel rising in him. She sensed his nerves and didn’t want to make this any harder than it already was. “Walk with me, Seth.” They paced through the cave, the cool air brushing against them like ghosted memories. “Can I just talk plainly to you?” Seth asked, hands shoved in his pockets. “Without all the prestige? Your Majesty and whatnot. All due respect.” “Your daughter certainly does,” she grinned.
