"Is mama here?" I beg, going back to the reason I even came here, to begin with. My need to get out of his presence has now become urgent.

"Yes, she's upstairs cleaning up a room. Do you wish to see her?"

Why else am I here?

I nod. "I brought her lunch, she forgot it at home."

"You didn't have to. I usually feed my workers well."

That's nice to know.

"Besides, there's always more in the kitchen." He, however, beckons me to follow him and I do just that, and together we make our way up the stairs.

"I didn't know she was cleaning your home, I didn't know you had a home in our town."

He stuffs his hands into his pocket, "I was born here and would like to get in touch with my home town. It is also welcoming and has nice and friendly people compared to the city side. Wanting to stay longer wouldn't be so bad."

"Who would be in charge of your other companies?"

I step into the garage where Aliyah had told me Ken was working on his motorbike. And I see him bent while loosening the plug of the bike, wearing a sky blue polo and black trousers.I submitted my resignation letter to the library last week and today is my last day there. The trial begins Monday and so I will need to place more focus on that, with hopes to do better. I have also submitted my signed Go Project agreement file back to the academy, and I knew nothing awaited me at home except sleep and a few chores, so I visited Ken. I tried to reach him and tell him about my plans to visit as I usually do, but he had tucked his phone somewhere far from him. After calling for the third time, I threw caution to the wind and came over instead, hoping he would be at home.Graduation was last week, and I got a few offers from various universities, and some even offered scholarship programs, but already being a part of the Go Project and guaranteed full scholarship cover

I am in the kitchen, making dinner yam porridge dinner with mama when the doorbell rings.“Are you expecting someone?” mama asks, her brow rising.I shake my head, my face folding as I try to recall if I am forgetting something.“Not that I know of,” I mumble before heading over to the door when its bell rings the second time. “Who’s it?” I ask but receive no response from the one at the door.I notice a small white slip pushed through under my door, and I picked it up to read it.Trial Day #1: The Go Project package is in the box.I flip the back of the paper and I see Jaclyn S. Tarr boldly written on it.I reach for the doorknob and open the door before stepping out, but I see no one. Whoever knocked a minute ago has already left and there was no more sign of him at the door or street.Whoever it was probably got tired and left. If that’s true, they have such small patients.

“Can I ask why did you choose to wear those, though?” Ken asks, after a while of silence.“These were the first choices that came to my mind. It’s not like I saw something else and went with this one. I don’t like standing out from the rest as much as fate loves shoving me in that direction.” I grumble and run a palm over my face.“Did you not get the package that came with the slip passed underneath the door last night?”My brow rises. “I saw the slip, but I did not see any package,” I answer, turning to him with an unsure look on his face. “Wait, you got a package along with the note?”He nods his head, “I did and from the look of it, everyone on the bus except you did, hence we are all dressed this way.”“I didn’t get any such package...” I trailed off, “I’m going to be in trouble, but I didn’t see it, I only saw the note!&rdqu

I hear noises from the kitchen as I step in through the door; I know mama is home already. She’s home earlier than usual and, as surprising as it is, I like it. The first day of trial was exhausting, but I’m glad it’s over and also happy I’ll see mama before I go to bed.Instead of greeting her from the living room and heading to get a quick shower in my room like I usually do, I approach the kitchen.I hear small chuckles and my brows pull together, wondering who else is with her in the kitchen.Mama barely had friends; the last and only friend she had was Mrs Lopez and since the end of their friendship, I haven’t seen her hanging around or keeping in touch with anyone else. I guess the sudden end to her last friendship had left a mark on her until now.I step into the kitchen and beside mama, who attends to the pot on the fire, stands Lorenzo, watching closely.I didn’t see

“We will all pair into two groups for today’s training,” Ken says, stepping out of the bus and following behind me.“How do you know?” I ask, my brow rising.“I overheard Avril telling the other guy? And also it’s in the guideline documents we got. As much as advancement is concerned, we will need to learn self-defence and the defence of our pack. Pack fallout is still a thing and no advancement of civilisation can stop that. If we are to train, pairing in two would be the logical way to go about it.”“I think it’s a good thing that alpha Dane is taking everything into consideration.” Caroline chips in.My mind wanders to last week when he stood up for me and later on came to my corner and helped me with my assignment. It was good of him and though I haven’t seen him since then; I appreciate the effort.I’ve tried to take my raging heart from longing for him, especially a

My eyes meet Ken, whose lips pressed together to control his emotions raging from fear angering.I grit my teeth and struggle to get up to my feet, my hands balling into a fist.Rose smirks as if she has me figured out. Once again, she darts in my direction at full speed, but I duck and this time my fist collides with her face.It does little to her, but it felt good doing it.Her teeth clench and she swings at me and I step back in time to miss the blow and I deliver two quick punches to her face. This one makes her stumble back a few steps. When her head rises again, I see blood on the corner of her lips, making me gasp at what I’ve done. She wipes the blood from her mouth and her eyes glowed, as she starts towards me in full force and this time I don’t escape and she tackles me to the floor delivering punches after punches to me and the last hard fist collide

The days of the training flew faster than I expected and soon days became weeks and so far we are at the end of the fourth week. The third week we trained on resistance, controlling our emotions especially our rage and sadness and it was easier said than done. This week, however, we trained on our focus and ability to adapt to changes and I've done that from my corner in the last five days.I did my best to not be the odd man out, and I paid keen attention to my environment, listening to instructions and following them religiously. I wanted to stay out of trouble as much as I could and did not want to anger any more supervisors I got.I haven't seen Dane in three weeks, not since the first week that he spoke in my defence. I've also become better so no one would have to rescue me now and then. I needed to be a worthy participant and I've done that so far. After being the odd man out and stepping on the wrong wires for the first two weeks, I stepped up my g

Her eyes well up with unshed tears, now being alone with Ken’s dead body. She tries to control herself and her emotions, but she can’t help it. So many times, Ken had told her to let the past go. He told her revenge will not bring her happiness, but sadness and pain. She never understood, but after the unfortunate event of the night, she knows he was right all along. His blood was on her hands and she would never forgive herself. She takes his chilly hands into hers, rubbing small circles all over them. “You were right. We should have stayed in that cottage. Now, as midnight passed, they needed rest. However, Ian stepped into the room to interrupt his much-needed rest.“Someone is here to see you.”“Who is he?” Ace moans, his lashes cracking open. The girls beside him wake as well.“His name is Kenneth Miller. He once trained with the rogue pack alongside the fire wolf and Caroline Matters. He’s like me, a witch.” Ian answers.Ace doesn’t need all the information. He knows who the kid was. He had faced him about a year ago when he came to the safe house. “What did he say?” he asks, helping himself up with his elbows on the bed.“He said he needed an audience with you. He believes what he has to say is important.”“Let him speak to you, then.” Ace

If he wanted me dead, he wouldn’t do it through anyone. He’d challenge me up front.” he ran a hand through his hair. “How many of us are left?”“We are twelve, alpha. He promised he will handle everything today and when Jaclyn asked to come see him before the face off; he didn’t object. If Silas took offence at this, he says nothing as he closes the door and follows Ken further into the house. “How did you find me?” he asks once they reach the living room. Ken scoffs, “I’m a witch, Silas. I know where you and ten others I passed by while coming here live.” “Fine. Jaclyn was still working on the broadsheets on her desk before her when she sensed Dane’s presence at the door of her office. Last month, Dane had helped set her back into the Northrich university she left a year ago. The plan was to work while schooling and she told him she could take on both responsibilities. Dane saw to it to assign her the minimum work while paying her the salary as if she was a full-time employee. He also stayed off her way, only seeing her a few times a week, giving her time to adjust to the working routine. She didn’t bother to lift her head from the files she worked on. He hadn’t lurked around in the last three weeks and so she knows something is up today. But knowing Dane, she doubts he’d go straight to the point. Well, he stands in her office and she can’t ignore the hell out of him like she wants.“Hey.” He speaks, and her head slowly lifts to see him with a wide smile on his face.“Hello.

Flashback Eight months ago, a month after Jaclyn woke. “People say the moon goddess loves all his children equally. Well, they lied because the moon goddess loves the fire wolf more.” Ken read aloud as he came to take his seat on the couch next to Jaclyn, holding two small textbooks in his hands. “How do you mean?” she asked from beside him, her legs folded in a yoga style and her hands rubbing her knee. “Remember when I told you fire wolves can never be mated or marked, but they can choose their mate and mark them?” when she nodded he continued, “This book confirms it.” “That, never having a mate sounds like a bad thing instead of good,” she said with a displeased scowl. “It’s not. The purpose of a fire wolf is more than finding a mate. The goddess, knowing this, made them unmarkable at least to an extent.” he closed the book and opened the other one, having a brown hardcover back. He did a dramatic throat-clearing before read
