The waves of the beach gently slamming against the shores, plus the combination of the morning sun filtering in through the parted curtains, stirred me awake. I blinked against the light, groggy and sore in all the places that told me last night had been real. Too real.

A soft smile crept onto my lips. I finally felt like a woman after so long. But as I felt the space behind me, my hand grabbed the sheets. It was cold and empty.

I sat up, the sheet slipping off my bare skin. I glanced down at it. I didn't remember covering myself last night.

Did he draw the covers on me? Why is he?

Then my gaze scanned the slightly luxurious room and my heart shuddered, noticing he was gone.

I threw the sheets off, swung my legs down the side of the bed and dashed towards the bathroom, despite the ache in between my legs.

He was gone. Just like that. No goodbyes, no message, no letter.

I bit my bottom lip as I walked back to the bed, a lump forming in my throat. Shame finally washed over me like cold sea water. I slipped into bed as I wrapped the blanket tighter around me, as if it could protect me from the feeling of being used… and foolish.

What was I thinking? Letting a stranger take a part of me away, even if just for one night. I didn’t do things like this. But he’d looked at me like I mattered. Touched me like he needed me.

And now, there was nothing.

Perhaps, he has a girlfriend. Surely, he would. Or maybe a fiance. Or worse, a wife!

The taste of that didn't feel right on my tongue. My fist clenched and my bottom lip felt sore from biting too hard.

Why was I feeling so dejected? I knew what I was getting into last night before I even agreed. I wanted it, perhaps, more than he wanted it and he gave it to me, so why couldn't I get over it?

How would I face everyone now? What would I tell them? That my one night-stand abandoned me afterwards like last night was nothing?

“Well, get over it. This is how the world works,” I chastised myself.

Ryan was right. I truly didn't know much of how the world worked.

I left the unpleasant life of the orphanage at the age of sixteen, thanks to the state who picked me and a few others for a scholarship program to high school.

The first day I walked into the world, it welcomed me with cruelty. I'd thought that leaving the orphanage – where I knew nothing but pain – I could finally live my dream life – happiness and freedom.

It was all I ever craved. But life was unfair and I found out pretty fast…

It was my first day in high school. I didn't think it would rain but it did. The sky mocked me like everyone did at the orphanage. I slipped and fell, or rather, someone pushed me from behind – for being a clumsy, poorly dressed girl with round glasses – and I fell gracelessly.

Everyone in school laughed at me. Some took videos and made memes of it when the shameful scene found it's way to the school forum.

But while I was broken and in despair, there was someone in the crowd who didn't laugh at me.

Ryan.

He was the school's heartthrob – the most sought after, all rounded student.

He stepped out of the crowd, into the rain and gave me his hand. From the moment I took that hand, my life changed.

He made me believe that he was the only one on my side. We dated for two years and he proposed and married me at nineteen. I thought what he showed and gave me was love.

Only now I realized he'd manipulated me, isolated me, and trained me to think he was my oxygen to survive in a world he called, “a wolf eat wolf world”.

Ryan didn’t love me, he owned me. Or at least, that’s what he believed. He wrapped his control around me with soft smiles and careful lies. And like a fool, I drank it all, believing I was lucky to have someone like him… when all he ever did was clip my wings and make me afraid of flying.

And here I was once again, with a different man, different circumstances, but the same hollow feeling in my chest.

“Damn it,” I muttered, wiping the stray tear that slipped down my cheek.

I wasn’t that helpless girl anymore. I had clawed my way out of that cage. I had taken a job at this resort to start afresh, to find the woman that I aspired to be. Not Ryan’s Adele. Not the obedient wife. Not the ghost of someone else’s dreams.

Knock!

A sharp knock at the door made me flinch. My heart jumped to my throat. For a split second, I hoped, ridiculously, that it was him.

I scrambled to my feet, tightening the blanket around my body as I padded to the door and pulled it open.

It was Emily. He stood by the entrance, his eyes drinking in my state – hair a mess, face pale, the oversized blanket wrapped tightly around my naked body like a cocoon.

She grinned knowingly at me, “We're going for breakfast, aren't you coming?”

She didn't ask about last night, or what transpired last night. Although she didn’t have to. The evidence was written all over me – smudged lips, trembling hands, and the ghost of him still clinging to my skin like perfume.

But I was thankful that she didn't make the situation more awkward for me.

I blinked at her, my throat dry. “Give me five minutes.”

However, what came after was something I'd never expect.

I should have known that nothing went smoothly and quietly once I got involved. I should have stayed back at the resort. But now, it was too late.

“Absolutely not!” Sarah cried out as Emily's car stopped before a luxurious restaurant. “We're not going in there, are we?” “Mark gave us his card. He said we could spend as much as we want, but nothing more than five hundred.” Emily grinned. “Wh– what? Mark has that kind of money in his Acct? Waah!” she exclaimed, rubbing her palms together, as a sly smile crept onto her lips. “I've found my cash cow.” “Hahaha… greedy bitch.” I watched them laugh and make jokes, my lips also curling at the edges, as I smiled along. Honestly, this was new for me. I only had Ryan and my son to crack jokes with, but it was rare. Ryan sometimes didn't come home, and my son, well, we were cool until months back. I shook my head, deciding to stop thinking about bad things and let these two energy boosters sweep my sorrow away. “Hey,” Sarah waved a hand in my face to draw my attention. She was sitting in front with Emily. “I notice you don't talk much. I'm sure you don't eat much too...” She pa

Emily nodded slowly, her eyes red and hollow. “Everything. It’s like they wanted to erase us.” I barely heard them. My mind was spinning so fast it felt like I was being dragged underwater. I'd just thought I found a place to hide. A place to start over! What would I do after this? Where would I go?! I have no money! My stomach twisted painfully, and for a brief moment, I thought I might throw up right there between the fancy velvet chairs and gold-rimmed glasses. Sarah’s voice cut sharply through my haze. “Who owns Our Family Resort?” she demanded. Emily gave a shaky laugh, bitter and humorless. “Nobody knows. It’s buried under layers of dummy companies and shell corporations. Mark tried to trace it once... but he hit a dead end every time. It’s like the people behind it don’t want anyone to find them.” I pressed a hand against my chest, willing my heart to slow down. Dead ends. Living in the shadows… It was exactly Ryan's style. Was he truly just a coincidence? Our Family

That night, I sat on my bed with Mark's laptop in front of me. The lit screen displayed my portfolio – a collection of sketched dresses, shoes, bags, men's wear, all gathering dust in my portfolio like dreams I was too scared to chase. I'd thought I lost them, considering what Ryan had done to cut me down. Did he forget about this? Or he didn't think I'd need this one day? Or maybe he underestimated me too much, believing I wouldn't last up till now without him. A soft chuckle escaped my lips. “Arrogant bastard,” I mumbled. “Ethan, wake up, honey. It's time for school,” I said softly, gently shaking my 7-year-old son awake. “Fuck off, bitch,” he shrugged me off. I froze, my hand still lingering in mid-air. “Ethan, what did you just say?!” my voice trembled with shock and hurt. Did I hear him right? He sat up, crossing his arms as he glared at me. “You heard me the first time.” He raised his chin defiantly, “Daddy said I don’t have to listen to you anymore.” My heart squeezed, like air had been knocked out of my lungs. Was that what Ryan had been teaching our son? To disobey me? Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I processed Ethan’s cruel words – and Ryan’s apparent influence behind them. But I took a deep breath. It was too early to start screaming again. “Your classroom teacher told me you missed the test yesterday. She's giving you another chance today, so you can't miss–” Ethan rolled his eyes. "So what if I miss it? Daddy said grades don't matter if you have money." Ryan!! My

It was the weekends, and the family had a birthday party to attend. It was Roman's daughter, Sophia's fifth birthday. As family friends, attending his daughter's birthday was mandatory. "Your dress is beautiful," Ryan said, looking away from his screen with a smile as I walked down the stairs with our son. “And Ethan, you're looking as handsome as always.”I smiled. I was wearing an off-shoulder, simple white lace dress that stopped below my knees. The beauty of the dress was the luxury fabric and the intricate designs that ran along the hem, neck, and shoulders. The only one in the world. Because I personally designed it. I also designed Ethan’s three piece suit, and he looked absolutely amazing in it. “Thank you, Daddy. Credit to mommy,” Ethan looked up and beamed at me with pride in his eye. What more could I ask for? “Oh, my talented wife. Come here,” Ryan took my hand and spun me around. A squeak escaped my lips before I could stop myself. “Ethan, go wait in the car. Your mo

“Care to tell me how the design I sketched from start to finish ended up in the hands of a model, Ryan?” I spat, eyes blazing with suppressed fury as I waited impatiently for his excuse. All eyes had turned to us. Some even lifted up their phones, cameras flashing. I knew this was a bad idea. Kids were present, and this drama would make it to the media, considering my husband and Julia's profiles, but I didn't care. Those words got to me. The betrayal got to me. “What are you talking about now, Adele? This is a child's birthday. Can you not cause a scene?”“I don't care!” I yelled. This man was making me frustrated. “I just want the truth. Where did she get this dress? I made it. I designed it!” “How would I know? I'm not a fashion designer, nor am I into the fashion industry.” He sighed, “Adele, I know you're stressed from being a housewife, you've holed up in the house for years and clearly don't know how the world works. You aren't the only smart one. You're not the only one wh

He didn’t answer right away, his hand sliding down my waist, pulling me flush against him. The sudden contact, the heat of his body against mine, made me gasp, and the tension between us thickened."But it does seem like it, Adele," he murmured, his voice dangerously close to a growl. "You want me too... And you’re not the type of woman who walks away from a challenge."My pulse quickened, my breath shallow, as his words sank in. Was he right? Was that really how he saw me? Ryan had said I was boring and lacked a fighting spirit. And this stranger was saying the opposite. I should have said something, anything. I should have resisted. But instead, I found myself leaning in slightly, just enough for him to close the gap between us.And then, with a sudden force, his lips found mine.I jolted, suddenly feeling like I was cheating on Ryan, but his hand around my waist tightened as he claimed my lips like he knew every inch of it. The kiss was fierce, desperate, and full of a kind of hu

My heart squeezed in sympathy for him. Despite my silence to his words, I couldn't help wondering: ‘Who the hell drugged a man like this?’ This man wasn’t just some arrogant or second generation heir causing a scandal. This man was danger in human form. And someone had sent him here in this condition.Mark's gaze shifted between us, his brows furrowed slightly. Then, he opened his mouth to speak. “Excuse me, Mister, she's not–”However, I raised a hand and placed it on his shoulder. When he gazed back at me, I shook my head, discouraging him from speaking further. Perhaps, he heard the stranger's bizarre request. “But Adele…” “It's okay, Manager Mark,” I gave him a tight-lipped smile. I strongly believed that I was the reason their guests stood them up at the last minute. I should at least do something in return. Although the excuse sounded hollow even to me, I convinced myself it was the right thing to do. For the resort. For my freedom. For my job. For the man who clearly didn’t

As we walked towards the staff quarters, Emily filled me in: "I noticed you didn't ask why so many workers left at once.” She didn't wait for me to speak before she continued. “The resort is going bankrupt. Mark is doing everything to save it, but those ungrateful workers,” she hissed. “They were all poached by our rival resort.”'Going bankrupt?!' My mind screamed. 'But I need money and...' I swallowed hard. And turned my head to look at her. She was watching me with shinning eyes, as if expecting I would stay. I took a deep breath. Well, maybe what I needed the most right now wasn't money, but a place to cool off, and people who didn't judge me. With that, I smiled, “Don't worry, I'm not like them.” She smiled, “I know.”I raised a brow. “How would you know?” She chuckled, “You're here to hide, Adele, the last thing I'd do if I were in your shoes was to go to where my ex-husband would find me.”My eyes widened. “You saw the news?”She scoffed. “Who in this country hasn't?
