Ryan

I closed the door to my office and plopped into my plush leather chair, feeling the weight of frustration and fatigue bearing down on me. I rubbed my tired eyes and threw my head back against the headrest. I am so sick of this nonsense.

“That bad, huh?” Mark’s voice broke through my thoughts. When did he show up?

“What are you doing in my office? I gave you access for an emergency only, not to wander about at will,” I growled.

Mark pouted like a child and said, “Aww! Come on, dude. I was bored and figured you would need some company after getting that call from Liam’s school. What happened?” I reluctantly started to recount the events from earlier.

Three hours ago, I had been in the midst of preparing for an important meeting with investors when my phone chimed, displaying Principal Dan’s number on the screen. Panic surged through me, and I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Is Liam okay?’ I answered the call with a sense of urgency.

“Hello. Principal Dan here. Am I talking to Mr. Crawford?” Principal Dan’s voice sounded strained.

“Yes. Hello, Principal Dan. This is Ryan Crawford. Is Liam all right?” I got straight to the point, my concern palpable.

He responded with a chipped voice, “Yes, sir, he is OK, but you need to come in as soon as possible.”

“Why?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“It would be better if we talked about it in my office. How quickly can you come?” he asked.

“I will be there in 20 minutes,” I replied before hanging up the phone. I quickly informed Mark, my business partner and self-proclaimed best friend, that I had to rush to Liam’s school, leaving him to handle the investors.

I entered Liam’s school quickly. He must have gotten into some sort of trouble because I have been called in a few times now. But never on such a high level of urgency. As I stepped into the office, the assistant looked at me with lust. I was tempted to give her a piece of my mind, but I was pressed for time.

“I need to see Principal Dan. Please let him know that Ryan Crawford is here,” I stated, trying to maintain my composure.

“Oh, Mr. Crawford, I know who you are. I will let him know. Until then, take a seat,” she said, fluttering her fake lashes and gesturing to an adjacent chair.

“I am fine where I am,” I said as she dashed towards the principal’s cabin. She returned a few moments later and said, “You may enter now, sir.”

I didn’t think twice about it and rushed into the cabin. The first thing I noticed was my son, Liam, sitting in the corner, accompanied by a ferocious teacher. I’m puzzled.

The principal said, “Mr. Crawford, please have a seat.”

I said, “Thank you,” and sat down. “What’s wrong, Principal Dan?” I asked.

“Mr. Crawford. Liam skipped class this morning and entered the chemistry lab, where he combined various hazardous chemicals. If not for Mr. Allison stopping him before he could do it, he may have sparked a fire or, worse yet, hurt himself,” Principal Dan explained.

I glanced at my son, feeling a surge of anger. He sat there, huddled and guilty, his hand clutching his chest and head bowed, avoiding my eyes.

“This is his third and final warning, sir. After that, I’m afraid I’ll have to take action and expel him from school,” Principal Dan stated, his voice tinged with anger.

My head snapped around, and I exclaimed, “What? Expelled? Are you forgetting, Principal Dan, that I am the biggest benefactor to this school? And why were the chemicals kept carelessly so that a kindergartener could reach it?”

“Mr. Crawford, I understand your concerns, but you must examine Liam’s behavior. As for the chemicals, they were there for high school students’ classes. I hope you can understand that I’m trying, but this month has seen a tenfold increase in the number of complaints against Liam,” Principal Dan added hesitantly.

I said while gritting my teeth, “I understand. I’ll speak with him. Can my son come home with me?”

“Yes. His classes for today are over. I appreciate you coming,” Principal Dan replied.

I nodded and walked out of the office with Liam, feeling a mix of anger and concern. As I climbed into my car and instructed my driver to take us home.

Liam murmured, “Daddy.”

“Not now. I’ll deal with you at home.” I snapped, losing my cool. It hurt to see the tears in his eyes, but he needed stricter discipline. I dropped him off at home and arrived at the office. I headed straight to my desk.

I scowled at Mark as he laughed aloud. “Is this humorous? My child is about to be expelled from school, and you are laughing!”

“What exactly do you expect me to do, Ryan?” he chuckled. “I’m an only child. I have no relatives, not even cousins. Hell, I’ve never held a baby before, Liam. And I held him twice. I can’t suggest anything about that,” he said.

I massaged my eyes once more and asked Mark, “What should I do? That kid is becoming more troublesome by the day.”

“How about you hire a nanny or a tutor who can discipline the child?” he asked.

“I tried, man,” I sighed. “No nanny is adequate. Many of them do not survive one day with Liam. And I am left with Liam, being alone at our home at the end of the day. I am busy in the office and sometimes need to pull all-nighters. Liam needs constant care. Mrs. Veil, my housekeeper, is getting old and she cannot handle doing all the housework and looking after Liam anymore.”

“So hire a live-in nanny. We are now looking for a tutor and a nanny or tutnanny. As a result, we narrow our search radius to a person who can do both for Liam. Don’t worry, I’ll set up some interviews. I don’t want my godson expelled,” he said.

“What the fuck is a tutnanny?” I asked.

He rolled his eyes and replied, “A tutor who is also a nanny is called a tutnanny. Keep up, grandpa!”

I scowled at him and said, “If hiring a new nanny/tutor doesn’t work, I’ll have to send him to boarding school,” I mumbled. I knew it was a painful decision, but I felt like I had no other choice for my son’s future.

“No. Let’s do the interview first,” Mark suggested.

I nod and sigh. As Mark hurried out of my office, I continued working. Though I don’t have big hopes, I hope to find something. I don’t want my son to live without a family at such a young age, but I don’t want him to be a spoiled brat either.

When I arrived home at midnight after a long day of back-to-back meetings, my thoughts were still consumed by the impending interviews.

After opening the door, I walked straight to Liam’s bedroom. He was soundly sleeping in his car bed, toys were scattered everywhere, and books were piled on the floor. I sighed and began tidying up the room.

As I noticed dry tear traces on my son’s face, a sudden wave of remorse washed over me, but I was at a loss for how to handle the situation. I gave him a gentle kiss on the forehead after carefully tucking him in, murmuring, “I’m sorry, buddy,” before leaving the room.

“You can leave now, Jim,” I told the guard, who had been looking after Liam until my return. He nodded and walked out, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I sighed and sat with my head in my hands, hoping that Mark would find someone to look after Liam, sparing him from the prospect of being sent to a boarding school.

Two weeks later...

Mark had managed to schedule interviews with several potential tutors/nannies for Liam today. I do not know how he accomplished this in such a short period, but I am grateful for it.

When my phone rang, I answered it. “Mr. Crawford, Melissa Smith, is here for the interview. Do I need to send her in?” Caine, my assistant, inquired. I picked up Melissa’s resume from the stack in front of me.

“Hm. Send her in,” I replied, ending the conversation. I muttered to myself, “Here goes nothing.” When I heard a soft knock at the door, I invited the candidate inside.

A tall, slender blonde entered, dressed in a tight skirt and an even tighter shirt, paired with high heels. She sat down to give me a seductive smile and a clear glimpse of her chest, making it clear she wanted to emphasize her physical attributes. Yes, it is pointless to interview her.

“Hello, sir. My name is...” She began introducing herself, but I interrupted her sharply, saying, “No need. You’ve been rejected. Out!”

“But, sir, I-I was...,” she stammered. I scowled at her and repeated, “I do not want a flirt as my son’s nanny. Now out.” Her face contorted in anger, and she stormed out of my office, displaying an arrogant attitude.

I muttered to myself, “That’s why I’ve been raising my son alone for so long. Most women are gold diggers or floozies.”

The next candidate fell short because she couldn’t grasp the complexities of dealing with a child’s behavior. The next one, I rejected a snob who was full of himself, thinking he was entitled to this job. I lost hope of finding a suitable nanny/tutor for my son after interviewing five people. Now, it was time to meet the last candidate of the day.

A soft knock came on the door, and my heart skipped a beat as the blonde with the ponytail and a not-so-formal red top and black jeans entered. Her presence took me by surprise, and I couldn’t help but notice her exceptionally beautiful and angelic face.

What the hell? What’s the matter with me?

“Mr. Crawford, good afternoon. My name is Amy Castello,” she greeted me with a smile and a silky-smooth voice that momentarily caught my attention. A silky smooth voice? Am I being pretentious or what? “Umm... Mr. Crawford?” her voice interrupted my thoughts. When I looked up, her brows were furrowed and her lips were pouty.

I cleared my throat, refocusing on the interview, and said, “Ms. Castello, please have a seat.” However, before we could proceed, my office door swung open, and Mark entered with an unusual, goofy smile on his face. I shot him a disapproving glare as he addressed the candidate.

“Sorry for the delay. Let’s get back to the interview,” Mark said while looking at Amy and winking at her.

“Mark, what are you doing here?” I inquired.

“How can I leave such a significant decision on your shoulders alone? Liam is my godson,” He said dramatically.

He turned to the confused woman sitting on the chair. “Hello. Amy, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” he said while smirking at her.

Now I understand his sudden interest in getting a nanny for my son. But what perplexed me was the uncharacteristic feeling of jealousy that washed over me as I watched him flirt with Amy.

AmyI sat nervously in the plush waiting room of RC Enterprises, feeling the weight of anticipation bearing down on me. My hands were sweaty, and I couldn’t stop fumbling with the files in my lap. The interviews hadn’t even started yet, and I was already sweating like a pig. I glanced around at the grandeur of the lobby, utterly awestruck. I had never seen anything so grand in my life. The top floor was vast, easily the size of two football fields, and it seemed to contain only two offices at the far end corner. Everything else appeared to be meeting rooms or additional waiting areas. I was sitting in the waiting room on a sofa that was so comfortable that I could just slide down and sleep on it. The decor of the whole floor was a soothing light beige, bathed in soft, inviting, and illuminating. It looked like something straight out of a magazine. I was so captivated by the surroundings that I didn’t even notice someone clearing their throat.“The interviews will begin immediately. Mi

RyanI reviewed Amy’s resume again. It was quite impressive. She had a degree in child development and, as she said, she minored in child psychology. The confidence in her voice and the way she answered were both excellent. I may have pushed a few buttons, but I do not want to risk anything about the future of my child.“So, who do we like? I think we can agree that Amy is the one.” Mark barged into my office before I could delve deeper in my thoughts.“Are you following her like a puppy dog now?” I asked, arching an eyebrow. He smirked, “Well, no, I was just getting acquainted with Liam’s future nanny.”“Who said that she was Liam’s nanny? Nothing is final yet,” I replied, trying to maintain a professional tone.“Oh please, if you did not prefer her as Liam’s nanny, you would throw her out of the interview like the previous one. And you know you are a little impressed with that spitfire. You cannot lie to me,” he replied.I squinted my eyes at him, giving him a warning, “Mark, don’t t

AmyI sighed as I plopped down on my bed after returning to my small apartment from the interview. I found the experience to be somewhat strange. Nannying was never part of my career plan, but when Mara approached me about it two weeks ago, I couldn’t help but feel perplexed. I probed her for more information, wondering how she even got wind of this opportunity. It appeared like the kind of position that required exclusive connections. To enter the building for the interview, I had to provide a mysterious coded message that Mara had given me. It all felt rather clandestine.I knew I should be grateful for the opportunity, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that Mara was keeping something from me. I mulled over the job offer, and there was no denying that I desperately needed it. My attempts at landing a teaching job elsewhere had been futile, as the entire district was grappling with severe budget cuts, resulting in countless layoffs. With a sigh, I reluctantly agreed to the interview, a

It is said that the Himalayan salt in the body wash would ease any muscle fatigue. As I lathered up, my phone chimed with an incoming call. I reluctantly answered, knowing that this interruption meant I had to wrap up my shower quickly.Jim informed me that Miss Castello had arrived at the gate, and I granted her entry before rushing to finish my shower. With the hot water and stress momentarily forgotten, I dried off and wrapped a towel around my waist. I vigorously rubbed my hair with another towel to dry it before checking my phone for any important notifications. As I was about to reach for my phone, I sensed someone’s gaze fixed upon me. AmyI quickly exited Mr. Crawford’s room, my heart pounding from the awkward encounter. I couldn’t help but berate myself for my blunder. I’m such a fool, I thought as I sank onto the living room sofa, absently toying with the straps of my bag. The question looming large in my mind: Was this going to cost me my job on my very first day? My nerves were getting the best of me, and I struggled to calm my racing heart.Amid my spiraling thoughts, I suddenly realized something crucial. Where was Liam? Panic surged within me. I had been so preoccupied with the earlier incident that I’d lost track of the little boy. I was about to launch into a search when a handsome man approached.“You must be Miss Amy Castello, Liam’s new nanny,” he said, smiling politely.I blushed. “Hmm... I am. And you are?”“I am Jim Perry, Liam’s bodyguard,” he introduced himself. My mouth formed an ‘O’ of realization. So this is the man who was in the bathroom. And also a 5-year-old has a bodyguard. LiamI huff and squeeze Mr. Snowbell to my chest. When Daddy told me about a new nanny, I was sure she would be the same as the others. I have not been able to sleep thinking about what happened today. Maybe Miss Amy is different. No!I cannot think like that. Miss Amy looked different from the other nannies, but deep down, I knew she’d turn out the same. The old nannies always put on a show when they saw Daddy, getting all giggly and excited. What did Jim call that... umm... flirting? They always flirt with daddy. I don’t like that. I scrunched my nose. I even saw one of them take something and sneak it into her purse. Daddy and Jim say stealing is bad.So I have to protect Daddy from those women. I make them run away. It was easy since all I had to do was pull up some prank, or little mischief, or just I had to act out a little. And they would run away, leaving me and Daddy alone. But today had been different. Miss Amy hadn’t acted like the others. When I tried to run away from her a

AmyI bit my lip, trying to hold back my emotions as I looked around my tiny apartment. This had been my home for the last few years, and it held memories of both joy and sorrow. I squealed like a crazy school girl when I landed my teaching job in the kitchen. I cried on the floor when the doctor told me that my mother would need to go away to a hospice or hospital situation, as she needed constant care. This is the place where I have cried and smiled and picked myself up more than I like to admit.Currently, as I placed the last of my essentials into my bag, I couldn’t deny the emotional weight of leaving this place behind. I was almost fully packed, ready to move into Mr. Crawford’s home. My salary would cover the rent here as well as my mother’s medical bills, so I decided to keep this apartment as a safe haven. However, I still needed to pay this month’s rent, and I was short on funds. So, I made my way to Mr. Howard’s condo, my landlord. I tapped his door knocker. Mr. Howard, my l

Amy “Hello,” I said as I picked up Ryan’s call. It was a rare occurrence for him to contact me directly from his office, so I couldn’t help but feel confused. “Hello, Amy,” his deep, husky voice sent a shiver down my spine, and I quickly composed myself. “Mr. Crawford. What can I do for you?” I responded, my tone professional despite the slight flutter in my chest. Our recent encounter on the gazebo lingered in my mind, a reminder of the unspoken tension between us. He mumbled something, barely audible, prompting me to request, “Hmm.. I am sorry I did not get that. Can you repeat it, please?” “Nothing,” he sighed, his tone heavy with an unspoken weight. “Can you do something for me?” Considering Liam’s impending school pickup, I proposed a delay. “Hmm... Liam’s insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge always kept me on my toes. “Jim

Most of the team, including Paula, our project lead, had been tirelessly working to iron out the kinks. “We’ve also made significant progress on the client reports and deliverables. We’ll be fully prepared for the launch.”“Keep me updated.” I nodded, acknowledging their efforts, before concluding the presentation.“Mr. Crawford,” Caine interrupted, sliding a stack of documents across the table. “These require your signature.”He turned the pages as I took a cursory reading and signed them absentmindedly.
