Chapter 71

Alyssa sat in the small, dimly lit room, her mind spinning, and for the first time in hours, there was silence. No accusations, no glares. Just stillness.

Ebsy stood nearby, leaning against the wall. He had that look he always wore when things got heavy—worried but trying to hide it. He was terrible at hiding things, though, not from her. “Are you okay?”

“I don't know,” Alyssa whispered, letting out an unsteady breath. She still hadn’t fully grasped how close she had come to being caught.

“You have to stay in here till you're better,” Ebsy proposed.

“I'm fine,” she swallowed, her hands shaking slightly as she ran them through her hair, trying to calm herself.

“How long will they be here?” She inquired, gazing up at him.

“I don't know Ally,’’ he said, shaking his head slightly. “But I'm pretty sure it's going to be a long one with everything that happened today.”

“I shouldn’t have dragged you into this,” she whispered, staring at her hands. “I’m sorry.”

Ebsy shook his head.

Well it's late.”“We need to talk.”“Can't it wait?” She asked in a low voice. “All I want to do is sleep. I've been working.”“Or you've been messing around?”

"This is your room"Alyssa dropped the box on the floor with a thud, taking in the appearance of the maid's bedroom assigned to her with a heavy heart. The air was thick with humidity, making it difficult to breathe. The small window barely allowed any natural light to filter in, casting an eerie shadow over the room. It was far from the comfortable living space she had anticipated."This is where I'll be sleeping?" She almost whispered, stunned at the sight of it.Lydia rolled her eyes "What is it? Do you want to complain? If it doesn't suit your preference, you could just leave."Alyssa was startled. If this was Ace's mate, then she was sorry for him. She had no manners at all. She knew almost immediately that they would never be chummy with each other. Lydia didn't rate her and didn't bother disguising her contempt."It's so dark and there's barely space for breath. What if I suffocate?""Let me guess, you die..then your body is hung on the trees for the birds of the air to feed on

A few days ago, In the aftermath of that eventful day when Lydia accompanied Ace to the monthly gathering; an intake of rogues and members from other packs, which were to be admitted to their pack, she found herself grappling with a mixture of shock and apprehension. Ace had discovered his mate amidst the crowd, but he hadn't caught a glimpse of her face. His grip on her waist suddenly tightened, and she winced. His gaze rested on the back of a figure, among the rogues who had applied for intake."What's wrong Ace?" Lydia didn't know who exactly Ace was looking at, but she felt something was different."It's nothing. Nothing serious," Ace said, as he forcefully withdrew his gaze. He ran his hands through his hair, "My mate is here.""What? Which one…"He hadn't seen her face, so he couldn't tell.It was a moment that had taken her completely by surprise, but despite the shock, Ace held onto the promise he made to her." You have absolutely nothing to be worried about. We would have a

Ace's mind raced, urging him to seek out his father and demand answers. What the heck was happening? Why was she here? He couldn't fathom why his father had brought Alyssa to their home, questioning whether his father truly remained oblivious to her true identity as his mate.Frustrated and overwhelmed by the intense desire she had ignited within him, Ace stormed to his room in a rush, desperate for a cold shower. He feared that if he didn't cool off, he would lose all control and rush downstairs to embrace her in his arms. But the blindfold though. Why was she blindfolded? he wondered. Did she think their home was a circus? He chuckled and then stopped. Why did he find her intriguing? He didn't expect her to have that much effect on him, it was exciting. Adrenaline rush! With Lydia, he had this feeling whenever they were behind closed doors. But this girl. She was something. Something he couldn't define. His mind was a whirlwind of emotions as he stepped into the shower and let the c

Alyssa couldn't focus on work with Ace's presence in the house. The way the scent of him surrounded her, drowning in her senses, the pressure of her responsibilities became too overwhelming and suffocated her every breath. She knew she needed a leave. Seeking solace from the pressure, She summoned courage and asked the Alpha for a two-day leave. To her surprise, he granted her request without hesitation. She packed a bit of the stuff she'd be needing for two days and arranged the content in a small bag. She stood in front of the mirror and hesitated on whether to leave the blindfold on or remove it. Her mind wandered to Ace again; she couldn't control it. No matter how hard she tried not to think about him, whenever she remembered they were in the same house and she would always see him every day, she thought about him.She didn't know if she could go on with the mission although she didn't say so to Alpha Larole. They had already signed the contract which she couldn't turn back on. S

Alyssa and Ebsy stood frozen, the world around them dissolving into a blur as Ace's sudden support sent shockwaves through the tense scene. They brought out the worst in him and demeaned him before the people.Ace, sensing the escalating tension, tried to mediate once more. "Perhaps we can discuss this calmly and find a solution that—”Ebsy's father cut him off. "Enough, Ace. We’ve heard all we need to hear. Ebsy, make your decision. Show us you have what it takes to be an Alpha, or step aside.”The room fell silent as everyone waited for Ebsy’s response. At that moment, Ethan, who had been standing quietly beside Ace, spoke up. He was tired and irritated at what was happening."Whether it's true or not, we can find out right now. Let's check her for signs of poisoning,” he suggested.Alyssa's heart skipped a beat at the sound of Ethan's voice. She sp

Ace and Ethan listened intently to the heated argument unfolding before them. The girl at the centre of the commotion seemed to be the reason for a deep-seated conflict within the pack. They heard the accusations clearly: "She almost killed my daughter! We demand an explanation!"Ebsy, standing protectively in front of the girl, countered just as fiercely. He eyed his father in anger. "Your daughter poisoned her first! She was defending herself!"The crowd around them was not convinced, their voices rising in a crescendo of disbelief and anger. "She's a danger to our pack! We can't have her here! Alpha she almost hurt your sister yet you defend a stranger.”“Because Kalista sought trouble. I know the sister I have and what she can do. This new girl can't hurt a fly.”“She can't hurt a fly. Yet she pounced on your sister.what are you saying?” Kalista’s mother demanded in rage, trying to rush for Alyssa but the guards held her in place, firmly.Ace glanced at the girl standing behind E

In the middle of the night, Alyssa woke up to the soft glow of moonlight filtering through her bedroom window. When did she get here? Probably when she was asleep. Her head throbbed slightly, a dull reminder of the recent chaos. As she stirred, she noticed Ebsy lying asleep by her bedside, his face etched with exhaustion and worry. She moved to sit up, her slight gesture enough to wake him.Ebsy’s eyes fluttered open, and he quickly sat up, concerned immediately replacing the sleepiness. "Alyssa, are you okay?" he asked, his voice husky with fatigue."I'm fine," Alyssa reassured him, her voice soft but steady. “You don't have to stay by my side every time, you know.”He shrugged. “I wanted to,okay. If I had been more careful, none of them would have hurt you.” "It’s not your fault, Ebsy. None of this is.”Ebsy's expression darkened, guilt evident in his eyes. "I should have protected you better. If I had been more vigilant, Kalista wouldn’t have been able to—”Alyssa cut him off, rea
