I woke up the next morning to the smell of oatmeal. Danielle stood in my room, sweeping and adding little stuff that my mother would always come to destroy.
“Good morning.” She smiles at me and I smile back, sitting up.
She frowns. “Did you even eat last night?” She asks, pushing the bowl towards me and I happily take it.
“I had a headache,” I answer, shoving a spoonful in my mouth.
“I brought cetamol, hurry we only have about forty minutes before school starts.”
Danielle was a pretty girl. Short pixie brown hair and bright green eyes and you guessed right, she was white. But she was like me. We were both almost dirt poor, with scholarships being our only shot at survival. We’ve been friends since kindergarten and the bond never broke. She was just a little shorter, with a petite figure. The only difference was that her mother actually cared about us, and if it wasn’t for my powder sniffing mother who threw a tantrum every time I slept over there, I would’ve probably been living with them.
“Ms. Loa, get up so we can get going.” She says slapping my thighs and I stand, downing the water that she brought.
I hurriedly got into the ‘bathroom’ and stared at myself through the broken mirror. Dark orbs stared back at me, as well as a fresh cut under my left eye. I shook my head as I took in my thick 4c hair, that was left in an afro from since yesterday. I was blessed with a length that left me looking less bald until it got wet.
I removed the shoelace and used a little spray bottle to lightly moisten it before using a wide-tooth comb to get it puffy again and detangle it. I put it back into the shoelace and brush my teeth, dreading the fact that I had to step into the bathroom.
Praying that a cockroach doesn’t come crawling out of the drain, I took a fast shower and dried off before slipping into a pair of old jeans and a black t-shirt. I put on my flip-flops and reenter my bedroom to find Danielle looking outside my window with her arms crossed. She was humming, perhaps in another world.
Snatching my bag from the floor, I smile at her. “Ready to go?”
She turns and sighs. “You think things will ever get better?”
I try my best not to frown as she stares at me.
“I believe so D, we just have to hold on.” She slowly nods at me and I engulf her in a hug, before quietly tiptoeing out of the house, careful not to wake the sleeping terror that was my mother.

“So are we going to talk about yesterday or?” I kinda hoped we didn’t have to. I wanted to forget Sammy before I even considered his offer.
“What about it?”
“Who were those boys Loa? Why were they helping us?"
“You're asking me,” I snort, kicking at a rock as we walk to school. “I was surprised as you. They’re Z level boys, so I'm not sure what happened yesterday."
“Where’d you go?”
“With Sammy.”
“Sammy? As in Samuel Blue?”
“I guess,” I shrug, glancing at her. “You know him?”
“Of course I know him! Everyone knows him!”
“If you’re going to say he’s loaded I’m pretty sure everyone besides us at school has money.”
“Loa, Samuel has the biggest of anger issues, I should’ve known. We need to stay away from him.”
“He’s a hormonal teenage boy Danielle, of course, he has anger issues.”
“I’m not talking about the usual petty problems, I’m talking about borderline. He beat his anger management teacher into a coma, it was all over the news once.” My head whips to her direction.
“Are you serious?” She gives me a dead look and my eyes widen.
“I was alone with that guy yesterday!” I shriek.
“I'm lucky. I got his friend.” She says for a moment before slowly smirking. “And he was hot.”
“Okay Marilyn Monroe, slow your horses."
“Seriously though Loa, you should stay away, everyone knows that he’s dangerous, and surely not someone to mess around with.”
“Don’t worry, I had no plans of getting to know him anyway.”#By the time we arrived at school, everyone was already in their classes. The teachers glared at me as I walked in late, muttering apologizes and the entire classwas quiet.
They didn’t sneer or cough insults but just looked on as if we were something of interest. This was new. The lesson seemed to drag on and on and surprisingly I found my thoughts wandering to Sammy.
A moment passed and I sighed, bored before staring out the glass window.
And there he was.
Out on the court, shirtless while shooting hoops with his equally muscular friends . . . I wanted to look away, I should’ve because seconds later his eyes connected with mine.
My mouth dropped open, and he didn’t smile, nor did he look away so eventually, I did, only to find Danielle looking at him and then back to me. She shakes her head slowly.
Finally, the bell rings and I pack up as if my tail was on fire and head out the door with Danielle right behind me.
Everyone was acting so weird, they avoided us like the plague and I haven’t seen mace in school today.
“Do you think he’s dead?” I ask Danielle as we walk towards the benches outside.
“It's not impossible.” She says solemnly and I bite the inside of my cheek. With her chemistry book open she sinks into her own world and I gaze around. This would be the time that dull teenagers would throw trash at our heads, even glass bottles, but there was none.
From afar, I notice one of Samuel’s friends approaching up, and I immediately tense, slapping Danielle’s thigh.
“Ouch! What’s wrong?” Her head whips in his direction and her eyes widen, but it wasn’t in fear.
Confused, I watch as a blush creeps up her cheek.
“Danielle.” He nods at me, before completely turning to her. He was shorter than Samuel which was nothing because Sammy was a coconut tree, however his build was just as buff. He had dark green eyes, almost in the same color as Danielle’s, and a tanned complexion with brown hair.
“H-hey, what're you do-"
“Just checking up on you, are you alright?”
She smiles softly and tries to place the hair she does not have behind her ear. I raise an eyebrow at her before looking away to find Samuel leaning on a vehicle, just staring at me.
I clear my throat at him before lowering my gaze to the ground. I had tuned out the two and was now focused on a small bird hopping around the parking lot.
“I’ll pick you up at 7, is that alright?”
“Oh no, that’s usually my time with Loa.” She says and I shake my head.
“No, that’s fine. 7 is alright for her.” I state, forcing a small smile as I realize that they’re probably going on a date.
She shoots me a thankful smile in return before exchanging numbers with . . . I don’t know his name. Must be nice to have a phone, I thought.
He winks at her before jogging back to Samuel and Danielle simply stares at nothing with a soft smile on her face.
“First date?”
“First date.” She nods, still in awe and I chuckle.
“You have to come over after school to help me pick some, ill make you a sandwich since you won’t be home for dinner.” I nod and we stand to get to our next class.
“Y’know, he has other friends. . . "
“I’m fine D.” I chuckle but I wasn’t. I was happy for her, she needed it.
True to her word after helping Danielle pick something out, she made me a sandwich and I went home with two bottles of water and a can of juice.Danielle’s mom, Sophia, was one of the kindest women I had ever met. She worked at a nursing home and although she didn’t make much, she always considered me her second daughter. When Danielle got new hand-me-downs, I got some too. Whenever relatives sent a box of food, I got half of it. If I showed up at their house beaten black and blue by my father at 3 am, she took care of me and laid me to sleep as if I wa
Chapter 6“I can’t believe that happened to you.” Danielle frowns as we enter the school gates and I shrug.“I’m used to it by now if I'm being completely honest.” She frowns and I look away. She came home only a little after I fell asleep last night, and ranted on and on about her date and how great it went. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing he wasn’t a douche and that he made her happy, even if it was only one date.
"Can we go now? I think I have a better place to go to." He suggests and I take one last look around. Students at school hyped the bar up so much; it was kinda disappointing that all I saw were old men who took off their wedding rings and a few underdressed women. The music was kinda low and no one was hype. I guess it was because today was a Wednesday.I stand and he follows suit. We get back into his sleek black car, and he immediately ignites and peels out of the parking lot."D
I watched him with hooded eyes as he handed the man the money. He had to try and hit the moving target in the center, and then he would get the bear.Sounds easy right? No.Midgame these targets went crazy, moving up and down and I bite the inside of my cheek watching as Samuel visibly got frustr
On the way home, I noticed that we ended up at Wal-Mart. He killed the engine and I turned to face him.“What’re we doing here?”“We’re gonna buy groceries,” Samuel says in a dull tone and I clench my jaw.“I don’t need any groceries, Samuel,” I tell him, getting angry. He opens his mouth to speak but I cut him off. “I know you feel sorry for me or whatever, but I don’t need your he
“Where were you yesterday?” Danielle asked as I meet her outside of my house. “And why are you out so early?”“I just had a fresh start this morning.” I lie. I just didn’t want her to see the outfit that Samuel had bought for me, nor the teddy bear, although I did have the reeboks on.“I was just around.” I shrug and she raises an eyebrow as we walk.“Around?”“Yeah,” I say simply and she scoffs.“You were with Samuel, weren’t you?”“I . . . Well –"“Loa I thought you were going to stay away from him?"“I was. But Danielle he’s really not as bad as you think. Sure he has a little anger problem, but he’s really sweet and – "
The ride to the Zoo was extremely tense, with the occasional glance from Samuel, who wouldn’t stop looking at me. I drummed my fingers on my knees, anxious to get there and see all the animals.I found it sweet that he even thought about bringing me here, and wondered if he perhaps knew about my obsession with animals.Danielle sat quietly with her arms crossed, staring outside the window while Carter just seemed guilty. His expr
“You wanna watch porn?”I slowly turn to Danielle, as she sat in front of her laptop.“What the hell dude?” I raise both eyebrows at her and she shrugs. “Why would you even – ““Well . . . I&rsquo
“Loa? You’re up so early.” I jump slightly as I hear Victoria’s voice from the kitchen.“Oh, good morning,” I force out a nervous laugh, tugging at my hoodie.“What’re you up to? Is Samuel up?”“No, he’s not, I’m was planning to head out so I could visit one of my friend’s mother.”“Oh,” she sets down her coffee mug, grabbing her bag, “I’ll give you a lift.”“That’s not necessary, Ms. Victoria, I was just going to call an uber.”“Girl, it is fine. I have time to spare, Shane left without me this morning.”“Oh . . . okay, well if you insist.”She claps her hand happily, opening the door for me. She had a long black s
A/N: Hi guys! Readers from wattpad can you let me know that you came from there? And new readers from GoodNovel I'd love if you let me know that you guys are new also. I apologize for such a long wait, I was in the process of moving and got caught up but I promise that I'm planning to update a lot more now even as the book is almost done. This chapter isn't perfect and I personally don't like it but my others will be better so no worries. Thank you all for your patience. I apologize for any errors.Time had frozen as we sat in the car together, each vehicle passing by raising the tension. I tried to figure out who said it first, did he?Did . . . I ?"You don't have to say it back," he whispers in the crook of my neck, reassuring me that it was indeed him that said it, and not me.However it still didn't create any ideas of what to say in my head, so I hugged him tighter and silently urging him to be strong. We pull apart after a few minutes
After we had rested, we were now on the hunt for the boy's suits, but before we could reach the stores, Duncan, Macy, Jack and Danielle walk into the mall.Danielle looked terrible. She had a bruise under her eye and had on a long sleeve shirt. For the first time, she wasn't in anything short but had on some baggy jeans.Duncan upon noticing us smirked. He began approaching, and as of result, we halted."HeySammy,"His voice was like chalk scraping against a blackboard."What the fuck do you want Duncan?"My eyes find Jack's and he looked just as terrible also. He had a cast on, his lips bruised and one of his eyes swollen. Yet i still couldn't miss the desperate look on his face. It was almost as if he was pleading for something.I looked away."Why so hosi-" In a second, Samuel had Duncan's throat in his palms. My eyes bulge as I remember what he said the other night.I
Everyone walked together as we moved through the halls in the malls. As expected, it was crowded.Classmates moved from one store to the other, you could practically feel the excitement in the atmosphere as everyone was on a high in anticipation of graduation."It's like a zoo in here," Samuel says, annoyed and I roll my eyes at him. Typical.Rein looked great. She had on a pretty white top and a tight-fitting jeans skirt with platform boots. Her makeup was A1.I wish I could do that. She was showing carter something of a flyer she had picked up.All I could do was look around happily. I'm not sure why, but I was in a really good mood. Samuel's arm was wrapped around my shoulder, the other in his pocket."So . . . where are we going first?" Tristan speaks up and we all stop."Well, what do we really need?""I say we split up," Ben suggested. "Girls need dresses, we need . . . well, suits."
Loa was vibrant all morning. She let me rinse her off in the bathroom, fully naked, and dressed in front of me without much of a problem. We didn't have school, but I had football practice for the last game of the season, and Loa sometimes stayed to watch. Today was one of those days. She didn't
We were in my room, burgers in hand, fries, and soda on the table. Celebratory lunch Samuel called it, but we used to eat this every other day."I'm sorry," he blurts after a while. "I'm sorry that I'm being selfish. If your dream school is somewhere out there, you should go ahead and find it. I want you to be happy. . . Even... Even if it makes me unhappy."
Ben and I were quiet, and Jack avoided my eye."What- what do you-""Loa . . . Macy has it out for you, I know it seems like she's forgotten all about you, but she. . . "
It was finally Monday, so when Samuel dropped me off I was quick to throw him a kiss and leap out of the truck.I had to find Jack.Like always, he was easy to find. Always running his mouth.
"Burger or pizza?""Mm, burger," I reply."Soda or wa
