Kibich city, a city full of life. The finest city of Credonia. However, it could not lack the entire arsenal that comes with one, people for instance. Talking of which, Claire was one of them and a homicide detective. She had a normal life besides carrying a gun and a badge. Family and Adams, the man she loved and was about to marry. Besides having to be around dead bodies often and chasing criminals, she did love her job.

She was romantically motivated as well and hoped for a normal life with a normal man, whom was Adams. He was also full of life and a university mythology professor. He too loved his city and his job. Sometimes, they could cross paths with Claire his fiancée in the line of duty but it was acceptable up until one morning. The very morning that changed everything. She woke up to a call from her precinct. As usual, someone had lost his or her life, you think because… it came with her job. Being a homicide detective, a phone call from the precinct meant death and a crime that needed solving. Well, yes, someone had lost a life and a crime needed solving but this day, she was not to be the detective. Quite awkward and sad, she was somehow a victim. Not that she was dead… No!

Her father had just been found dead in his house by a neighbor. Judging from the nature of the crime scene, her father’s death was not just any ordinary death. The house was a total mess, a sign of an ambush and struggle as he fought to save his life. Funny looking weapons were also found at the scene. Upon hearing the news, she notified her mother, whom was living on the Eastern side of the city after they had separated with her father.

None of them could think of a reason for someone wanting to kill her father except for her mother. As it turned out, her parents had secrets they never shared with her or her younger sister. She made that clear on the phone call she got from Claire notifying her of her husband’s mysterious death. As it turned out, this reason for her father’s death did not only cost him his life but also his family as well. It was the main reason for their separation. As they moved around the crime scene, she noticed a young man of about her age standing across the street under a shade watching. He never seemed to flinch even after she saw him. She decided to walk outside and get to know his interests but, on reaching outside, the man was long gone without a trace. As she was about to go back into the house, her phone rang, it was her mother again with a question.

“Does ‘Vivienda de Vampiros’ mean anything to you”, her mother asked. Seeming to have no clue, her mother continued, “Sorry to keep you in the dark for all those years but, it’s time for you to know about Blood City”. She hang up the phone.

It had just stopped raining outside. The dusky heavy clouds were clearing from the murky sky. The moon could be seen slightly. Very little light came through the tight spaces between the clouds though. The streetlights and the vehicle headlights gave the night a delightful radiance. The night seemed promising and full of life. Adams, a mythology professor at Kibich University was home. He was busy doing some research for his next class the following morning. On his desk was a half-full glass of wine, several ancient history books and a powered-on laptop. The T.V. was on but without volume. The stereo played some soft cool classical music famously known to enhance creativity and high concentration. Lit was a medium desk lamp that illuminated his workspace and two huge candles at the middle of the dinner table. Several small wall lamps were also lit around the stylish modern living room. The dinner table was set for two. An indication that he was not planning to spend

A short while later, Claire was done and ready to join her fiancée for the dreamy dinner date. She had her own surprise for Adams as well. Adams dinner surprise for her triggered her deepest romantic senses. She needed to return the favor by looking good for him. Besides, she did miss her fiancée extremely and needed the night to be full of romance. She could not dare take any chances. The nature of their day jobs made such a night a rare occurrence. The night had to count. The fact that the dinner date was in-house came in handy. Instead of pajamas or any other clothes that people put on at night, she had something better in mind. She picked a medium-length red silk dress for the occasion. On her lips was a nude shades with warm hues lipstick that played up her warm undertone of her light brown skin. In general, her face was well made up to look the prettiest she could for Adams and light up the moment. In her feet was a pair of designer heels suited to magnify her

Claire arrived at the precinct. She hastily got inside and headed for the captain’s office. As she walked past, the officer’s look on their faces confirmed her earlier fears. By then, she knew something was terribly wrong. All she had left was the answer to the question of what. She got to Michael’s office and inside she went. The captain had put on the same look as that on the officers’ faces. She did not give the captain more time to put himself together to start the conversation and the reason for the call. She looked worried, “Captain, I have had my share of trouble thinking about your call and enough time to put myself together for anything. So, please…get it over with and tell me what the hell is wrong and why everyone is looking at me as if I am a walking dead,” she demanded as she sat down. Michael sat upright, took a deep breath and looked her straight to the eye, “You may not be dead but I’m afraid someone is…someone you care about deeply. I am so sorry. I

Later that evening, her sister got home from a three-day school trip. Claire was already at home. Her sister was living with her. No matter how hard it was for Claire to break the news to her, she finally got enough courage. As Jane placed her bag on the couch, “I really missed you sis. I see you are still keeping the city safe and looking good as always,” she remarked. Claire reached to hug her, “I missed you too little sister. How was your trip? You look as good as well,” Claire commented. They both sat next to each other, “the trip was very okay. We really enjoyed ourselves. How is Adams? I thought he would be here?” Jane asked with a smile. “I am glad the trip went well. As for Adams, he is very fine and still in love. He was here last night and left this morning. We are okay. As for the city, I wish I could say the same,” Claire replied in a sorrowful voice. Jane looked more attentive, “why…what did I miss, tell me?” she inquired eagerly.

Thomas was home at the lair. In his left hand was a glass of fresh blood. In the other hand, he held the T.V. remote. He was busy scanning from one channel to another. He seemed like one searching for something specific or, nothing at all. After several scans, he tossed the remote onto the couch across his position adjusting his sitting posture to a more comfortable one. At that moment, Catherine was returning to the lair. Thomas stood from the couch and walked to the dining area. On the table was a number of blood bags. He quickly poured some in another glass and handed it to Catherine. As he passed her the glass of blood, “honestly, I don’t get what these humans spend so much time watching. I have never found anything worth my time. I think we should sell the bloody…idiot box…that is what it is,” Thomas lamented. Catherine looked angry with him, “what the hell is wrong with you! How many times do we have to talk about this?” she questioned Thomas as she too

After Peterson’s burial, it was time to get down to business. It was about time the team learnt how to hunt and kill the bloodsuckers. They gathered in the briefing room ready for Rebecca to begin the lessons. She had not yet arrived. A while later, Claire’s phone buzzed. It was her mother calling. “Meet me at the abandoned western trailer pack with your team. Be quick. Time is not on our side,” Rebecca instructed Claire. “Okay. What should we carry,” Claire asked. “As far as I am concerned… nothing. Not even your handguns. They are useless on these brutes but…since it is protocol, just carry them with you,” her mother answered as she hung up the phone. Claire notified her team of what she had been told and without waste of time; they got into one of the police SUV cruisers and left for the park. After about a ten-minute drive, they arrived at the park. Rebecca was waiting for them parked at the gate. Upon seeing them, she drove on into the pa

In one of the iconic university lecture halls, Adams was just winding up a history class. One of the students raised a question, “is it really true that vampires are mystical creatures?” he asked. Adams turned around to have a good look at him, “history and mythology tells us so. Their existence has not yet been proven,” he explained. Another student seemed concerned, “then how can you explain Elizabeth’s mysterious murder?” she inquired. “There is no need for you to worry. I cannot know the workings of a killer and neither can you. I teach history and mythology not criminology. Elizabeth’s killer is just a psychopath…a special breed of psychopath and the police are doing everything to make an arrest and get her justice,” Adams outlined. The students busted out into a nervous laughter. Toby could not hold without question, “what should we do in the meantime…before the police catch the special breed of psycopath?” he worried. “Just make sure yo

Sweet melodies could be heard as the birds intoned early morning acclaims in thanksgiving. Indistinct engine revs and tire squishes could be heard from a distance as few to diminutive cars sped by on the highway. From the horizon, a mix of red, orange, and yellow beams of light could be seen as the sun ushered in the new day. The small still scattered cream-white clouds decorated the dark blue sky as the wind mooched around. It was around 6 o’clock in the morning. Thomas woke up and walked across to the well-crafted windows made specifically for a vampire’s warren. They kept the hot dangerous U.V. rays out of the domicile keeping the vampires safe. He drew apart the long fancy silk curtains to let in some light. He then picked a robe to cover his body as he turned around only to meet an empty bed. Not certain of Catherine’s ware bouts, he descended the flight of the well-vanished granite stairs from the bedroom floor to the living room floor. He could not think of a
