Claire arrived at the precinct. She hastily got inside and headed for the captain’s office. As she walked past, the officer’s look on their faces confirmed her earlier fears. By then, she knew something was terribly wrong. All she had left was the answer to the question of what. She got to Michael’s office and inside she went. The captain had put on the same look as that on the officers’ faces. She did not give the captain more time to put himself together to start the conversation and the reason for the call.
She looked worried, “Captain, I have had my share of trouble thinking about your call and enough time to put myself together for anything. So, please…get it over with and tell me what the hell is wrong and why everyone is looking at me as if I am a walking dead,” she demanded as she sat down.
Michael sat upright, took a deep breath and looked her straight to the eye, “You may not be dead but I’m afraid someone is…someone you care about deeply. I am so sorry. I wish there was anything we could do to change the fact,” Michael responded in a low tone.
“Which someone are you talking about? If you must know, the wait is getting worse than the news. What are you talking about,” she insisted impatiently.
“Our patrol officers on the Northern side of the city got a call about a murder at 1640 St. Paul’s drive…” she interrupted.
“That is my father’s house. Did something happen to my father?” she queried with tears forming in her eyes.
“Yes detective. I am so sorry but your father Peterson was found lying dead on the living room floor this morning. The neighbor whom reported said…he met the front door open and the house messed up before he saw his body. It seems he did try to fight for his life to the end. I am so sorry. Your partner detective Johnson is already at the scene,” he explained.
“What happened… are there any clues as to who killed him or what exactly transpired?” she requested in pain.
“Take it easy Detective. We are still waiting for the report. I suggest you let the others handle this one. You have our full support on this rest assured, we shall find his killer,” Michael assured as he stood up and walked towards her.
She stood from the chair wiping off tears off her eyes, “thank you for your concern and the support but…no one is better to solve this case than me captain. Tell them to touch or move nothing until I get to the scene,” she suggested as she reached for the door.
“Are you sure about this detective? It is not a good idea to take lead. You are too much involved,” he tried to reason with her.
She turned around, “that is the very reason I am the best to lead the case. I am too much involved to sit it out,” she stated as she walked out.
“Your call Detective. I will agree with you not because it is okay but because you need every support you can get,” Michael acknowledged as he followed her out of the office.
As she walked down the stairs, “should I get you an officer to drive?” the captain suggested.
“Do not push it captain. I need your support not baby-sitting,” she answered as she continued walking.
As he returned to his office, he took out his phone to notify Johnson of her request, “it’s just an opinion… you didn’t have to take it,” he spoke in a soft voice operating the phone.
At the crime scene, detective Johnson, Hills, a forensic analyst and, several officers scrutinized for clues and answers. Hills was busy studying the body for the cause of death. Johnson walked around trying to piece everything together as the officers marked the scene taking pictures.
Shortly, detective Claire arrived and walked straight inside. The officers on guard tried to stop her but Johnson waved them off. As she approached Johnson, he tried to give her the I-am-sorry speech but she was beyond that.
He walked towards her as she approached, “I am so sorry…” she interrupted him by a show of hand.
“Save me the speech Detective. I have had enough sympathy. Tell me what you found at the scene. Any leads as to whoever did this or what really happened?” she asked as she put on a pair of latex gloves.
Still, Johnson looked unsettled by her reaction, “are you sure you want to be here detective? You should let us handle this,” he tried to reason with her.
She made an instantaneous stop and turned to look back at him, “why do you people keep thinking I need a baby seater. All I need is clues to whoever did this. Do you have any detective?” she asked bitterly.
Johnson hesitated to answer, “I thought so Detective. So…please let me work and help me to solve it. Otherwise…do not stand in my way,” she cautioned as she got back to work.
Johnson lifted his both hands backwards as a sign of backing off, “okay, your call Detective. I will help in every way I can, just like always,” he assured.
“Let’s find the killer but first, I need to make a phone call,” she took out her phone and excused herself.
She called her mother to let her know of what had happened. A while later, she came back to where her father’s body was, “Hills, what do you have for me, anything I need to know?” she asked Hills.
He stood upright and shifted his eyes from the body to her, “Nothing besides the obvious at this stage. I need more time to carry out more tests,” Hills informed.
She bent low closer to the body, “which is…” she looked back at Hills, “the obvious…what is it?” she inquired shifting back to look at the body.
“From what I can see on…” he hesitated and swallowed some words, “…he died from asphyxia as a result of strangulation. From the marks around his neck, whoever he was up against was super strong,” he reported.
“How strong is super strong…is that all? What about these weapons? Why did he not use them?” she brainstormed as she walked around.
“As I have said, more information after a few more tests. About the weapons, I am in as much darkness as you. Nothing more I can do from here, I am sorry.”
“Just wrap up the scene. It’s making me nostalgic. Let’s solve the rest at the precinct,” she said looking outside through the window.
Something caught her attention and got closer to the pane looking keenly. Johnson noticed it and asked about it.
He approached her, “what is it Detective. What do you see?” he asked looking outside as well.
“That man there, standing under the shade, did you see him before? Does anyone know what he is doing there?” she inquired walking outside to confront him.
Her phone rang as she walked out. She took it out and picked to answer. It was her mother calling.
“Tell me something Claire, does the name ‘Vivienda de Vampiros’ mean anything to you,” her mother asked.
“No, I have never heard of it. Should it mean something?” she questioned in curiosity.
“Yes it should. I am sorry to keep you in the dark for all these years but, it is time,” her mother explained.
She got dazed and stopped, “sorry and time for what mother. You are getting me more worried here. I have had my share of worries for today. Enough, what do I need to know,” she pushed with need to know.
“Your father’s death was no accident. I think it is time for you to know who you are and about Blood City. We have to meet as soon as possible,” her mother hung up the phone.
Claire dropped it from her ear in wonder. Upon looking for the man she saw standing outside, he was long gone. She could not hold the frustrations within to herself.
In a soliloquy, “who the hell did I offend and what the hell did I do to you? Show yourself and face me. Do not be a coward hiding in the shadows,” she spoke aloud to everything around her as she turned in circles, anger and confusion.
Shortly, her phone rang again. She lifted it face up to see the caller Identity. It was none other but Adams. Besides her mother, she had told no one else about her father’s death. Not even her younger sister Jane.
Later that evening, her sister got home from a three-day school trip. Claire was already at home. Her sister was living with her. No matter how hard it was for Claire to break the news to her, she finally got enough courage. As Jane placed her bag on the couch, “I really missed you sis. I see you are still keeping the city safe and looking good as always,” she remarked. Claire reached to hug her, “I missed you too little sister. How was your trip? You look as good as well,” Claire commented. They both sat next to each other, “the trip was very okay. We really enjoyed ourselves. How is Adams? I thought he would be here?” Jane asked with a smile. “I am glad the trip went well. As for Adams, he is very fine and still in love. He was here last night and left this morning. We are okay. As for the city, I wish I could say the same,” Claire replied in a sorrowful voice. Jane looked more attentive, “why…what did I miss, tell me?” she inquired eagerly.
Thomas was home at the lair. In his left hand was a glass of fresh blood. In the other hand, he held the T.V. remote. He was busy scanning from one channel to another. He seemed like one searching for something specific or, nothing at all. After several scans, he tossed the remote onto the couch across his position adjusting his sitting posture to a more comfortable one. At that moment, Catherine was returning to the lair. Thomas stood from the couch and walked to the dining area. On the table was a number of blood bags. He quickly poured some in another glass and handed it to Catherine. As he passed her the glass of blood, “honestly, I don’t get what these humans spend so much time watching. I have never found anything worth my time. I think we should sell the bloody…idiot box…that is what it is,” Thomas lamented. Catherine looked angry with him, “what the hell is wrong with you! How many times do we have to talk about this?” she questioned Thomas as she too
After Peterson’s burial, it was time to get down to business. It was about time the team learnt how to hunt and kill the bloodsuckers. They gathered in the briefing room ready for Rebecca to begin the lessons. She had not yet arrived. A while later, Claire’s phone buzzed. It was her mother calling. “Meet me at the abandoned western trailer pack with your team. Be quick. Time is not on our side,” Rebecca instructed Claire. “Okay. What should we carry,” Claire asked. “As far as I am concerned… nothing. Not even your handguns. They are useless on these brutes but…since it is protocol, just carry them with you,” her mother answered as she hung up the phone. Claire notified her team of what she had been told and without waste of time; they got into one of the police SUV cruisers and left for the park. After about a ten-minute drive, they arrived at the park. Rebecca was waiting for them parked at the gate. Upon seeing them, she drove on into the pa
At the Kibich Central Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCTRH), Kate, a surgical doctor and Daniel’s acquaintance was coming out of a three-hour surgery. Before going to the changing room to get out of her surgical attire, she rushed to her office and locked the door behind her. She quickly unlocked a lower drawer on the left side of her desk. She then took out a blood bag and helped herself to gratification. As a vampire, working at the hospital as a surgeon, always exposed to blood and, keeping her secret was no easy task. An empty blood bag later, she was fully quenched. She walked out to the changing room and got into her normal attire. Her day’s shift was over. As she was going back to her office to get her effects, Jason, an intelligent handsome medical doctor approached. He stood right in front of her, “Today you have no excuse for turning down my proposal. It’s early enough,” he said as he handed a rose paper-fold to her. She picked the rose and
The following day was one of the big days for the students at the Kibich University. The annual cultural festival was scheduled for later that night. At around midday, all the classes for the day where done. Jane and Vanessa, her best and closest friend, were among others coming from the classes. One could easily tell the importance of the day to the students from the livelihood amongst them as they walked to get ready for the great event. Among the students was also Jonas and his best and closest friend Toby. Both were classmates to Jane and Vanessa. The four were pursuing the same degree in journalism. Jonas was not only a classmate and friend to Jane. He had an eye for her. Since their first year in the university, he was longing and hoping to have her as his girlfriend. He was not the brave-type though concerning expressing his feelings to Jane. He always found himself holding back every time he tried to speak his heart out to her. Nonetheless, his friend Toby wa
Minutes later, detective Claire and her team arrived at the scene. As usual, before they could get to the bloody cadaver, they walked around the scene looking for anything that could give them a clue as to what had happened to the young girl. As Claire’s eyes scanned the crowd, she noticed her sister, her friends and Adams had already surrounded the scene as well. Everything including the music that was playing at the dais had halted giving way to the ear-piercing screams. To the students, it became a sorrowful and shocking night; a very dreadful moment. They had not seen such an incident in their school involving one of their colleagues for quite a long time. To make matters worse, the body of the girl in question seemed torn apart. The body had huge, deep crosscuts and puncture marks looking like stings from bees on steroids or an animal with colossal fangs. The very much-awaited cultural festival had come to its impromptu end at the very beginning. One could easil
Adams’ obsession for mystical creatures was reborn and he got himself a new hobby. He steered his mythology proficiency to a completely new direction, back to his old ways. The death of the young university student became his ground-zero and the trigger.Once he was done with the day’s classes, he dedicated his remaining part of the day to gathering required materials for his newly found hobby. He began his search at the university library. He picked a few books that he spent the rest of the day skimming. Sweet melodies could be heard as the birds intoned early morning acclaims in thanksgiving. Indistinct engine revs and tire squishes could be heard from a distance as few to diminutive cars sped by on the highway. It was a chilly Tuesday morning. The weather was still cold outside. The grass on lawns was covered in a wet layer of whitish dew. The sun was slowly emerging from the horizon shining its magnificent bright rays across the earth. Slowly, the dew melted away upon touch by the rich warm rays lawn by lawn as the sun got higher up the sky. The city was crawling back to livelihood ushering in the new day.Claire and her tenants, Adams and Jane were also in the lively mood. They all were in the morning rush to get ready to head out to their respective destinations. As soon as they were all fully prepared, it was time for breakfast. Being an early riser, Claire had made sure that everything was ready before they came to the dining table. She served them breakfast and they delved in. As they took a toll on the delicious meal, table manners flew off the windows as they began to conversate.“How is everything going on at school?” Claire started with Jane.&ldq
The city streets were busy and congested with both people and vehicles as it was a norm on working days. The temperatures were average as the sun was covered by a light blanket of white drifting clouds. Jefferson was on duty chauffeuring his taxi to earn his daily revenue. He dropped off a passenger and a young slim blonde lady got into the car. It was still at the early hours of the morning. She was officially dressed in an elegant grey stripped skirt suit and designer heals in her feet. In a hand, she held a matching swanky medium-sized Louis Vuitton handbag by the strap. She seemed as one headed for the office and out of place in a taxi. As usual, Jefferson introduced himself as she responded with a destination. Looking at her through the rear view mirror, “Good morning and welcome on board ma’am. To where may I drive you please?” he asked. She placed the handbag on the seat, strapped in and looked at him, “1630 Paul avenue please,&rdq
The weather was calm. The sun was shining bright. At its background was a light blue sky with almost no clouds. It was a beautiful day until it was no more. Over the police radios, Claire and her team heard a distress call from the officers on patrol. In a nervous voice, “this is 4th squad. Shots fired, I repeat…shots fired. We need backup on 16th street,” an officer called out.Claire and her team diverted immediately to offer backup. “This is detective Claire. Backup is on the way. We are in response, I repeat…we are in response,” Claire answered over the radio. A short while later as they drove, they heard another call, “4th squad…officer down, I repeat…officer down. We need an ambulance; I repeat…we need an ambulance. Suspect is heading north; officers in pursuit,” the officer informed.Shortly, they arrived at the scene. Fire had seized but the scene was chaotic. Some cars had crushed into each
In one of the iconic university lecture halls, Adams was just winding up a history class. One of the students raised a question, “is it really true that vampires are mystical creatures?” he asked. Adams turned around to have a good look at him, “history and mythology tells us so. Their existence has not yet been proven,” he explained. Another student seemed concerned, “then how can you explain Elizabeth’s mysterious murder?” she inquired. “There is no need for you to worry. I cannot know the workings of a killer and neither can you. I teach history and mythology not criminology. Elizabeth’s killer is just a psychopath…a special breed of psychopath and the police are doing everything to make an arrest and get her justice,” Adams outlined. The students busted out into a nervous laughter. Toby could not hold without question, “what should we do in the meantime…before the police catch the special breed of psycopath?” he worried. “Just make sure yo
Detective Claire intensified her search for the eccentric appearing at her crime scenes. This stranger happened to be Daniel. He was her number one suspect in the murders of her father and Elizabeth. Besides circulating his delineation around every precinct in the city, she made sure that her team was up to the task as well. After reporting for work, Michael gathered the team for a briefing and quick overview of the search headway. As usual, the captain commenced the briefing, “how far are we on finding our suspect? Any leads?” he asked. Claire, the lead detective gave a report, “we have managed to inform and circulate his picture to every precinct in the city and we expect their full support,” she summarized. “Do they know what they are dealing with exactly?” Michael, the captain continued. “All they know right now is that, the suspect is highly evasive, skilled and extremely dangerous,” Johnson explained. “I thought the hunter said to keep i
At Kibich University, classes and every other routines were back to normal. The students were still terrified by their colleague’s mysterious murder though. To those that had seen her bloody body; the incident was still fresh in their memory. Various rumors were spreading amongst them about Elizabeth’s murder as they awaited for her tribute ceremony organized by the university. Jane and Vanessa were seated at their favorite spot at one of the university’s study areas. They had some group discussions and assignments they needed to do. As they waited for Toby and Jonas, the other group members, they too brainstormed trying to figure out what could have happened to Elizabeth, the young girl that was murdered. Looking worried, “I can’t believe that Elizabeth is dead. I wonder who could have killed her and why,” Jane wondered. Looking worried as well, “she was friendly but kept to herself most of the time and did not talk much. She was somehow an introvert. Always
