Chapter 2.

Each step I took away from the house felt like a piece of me was being torn away. I walked to the garage and got into my car. I could take it because it didn’t belong to Kelvin or was gotten with his money.

My grip around the steering wheel tightened as the road before me became blurry. I sniffed and wiped my eyes, but the stupid tears just wouldn’t stop falling. Multiple thoughts raced through my mind as Stephanie’s words travelled back to me.

Was it really my fault? Was I so concerned only about myself that I didn’t see that Kelvin wasn’t happy? I asked him so many times about it, but he said he wasn’t bothered that we were yet to have children. He told me he could wait a thousand years, so why?

I slammed my fist hard against the wheel, causing the horn to blow loudly, but it wasn’t enough to soothe the ache in my heart. I tried to find an excuse, but nothing could excuse him from cheating on me.

It may have been a joke then, but I had told him multiple times to tell me when he became tired of me. I told him I would let him go if he felt he was no longer happy. He just had to tell me instead of cheating. We had the discussion so many times, but look at what he did.

I pulled into Brie’s driveway. She was my best friend and the only one I could run to. The door opened before I could knock, and Brie appeared with a smile that turned into a frown as soon as she saw the expression on my face.

“Lucy, what's wrong?” Her voice was soft as she pulled me into a hug. “Is everything okay?”

“He cheated Brie. After he promised. He cheated.” I choked out, the worst tasting like sour grapes on my tongue as I said them.

Brie gasped and pulled back with her eyes wide. “What? Are you sure? It’s Kelvin. He loves you a lot. He would never."

I scoffed. The scene of him fucking her was still vivid in my head. It was an image that I would never forget.

“I saw them with my own eyes. He was sleeping with her on our bed, Brie. On our anniversary night,” I cried out. My chest constricted, and it hurt so bad.

“Come in first,” Brie whispered, pulling me inside her apartment before closing the door.

She pulled me to the couch and took my hand in hers. “Tell me what happened."

“You know I talked to you about surprising him with the pregnancy news, so I came back without telling him, and I found him in our bed with Stephanie.”

“No way!” she shouted, and she was on her feet. “I thought he had cut off all contact with her.”

“I thought so too, but we were wrong. She even had the audacity to tell me it was because I could not bear a child for Kelvin. It made him so frustrated that he had gotten drunk and slept with her on our bed.”

“But you proved her wrong, right? You showed them the pregnancy results?” Brie questioned me, taking her place beside me again.

“For what? He doesn’t deserve to know. He wants to have a child with her? Fine, but he would never come near me and my baby ever again,” I spat. I would never let Kelvin near my baby. He could have his perfect family with Stephanie.

“Why Lucy?” Brie cried out and gripped my shoulders. “You should have told him. That would have put that bitch in her place.”

“Why should I have to prove myself to her? I am his wife, not hers. She isn’t even his family, but his ex! Why should I show her my pregnancy test results, and why should I demand an explanation from a man who couldn’t even get up on his feet to defend himself?” I yelled and jumped on my feet.

“Calm down, Lucy. You can’t get too worked up. Think of your baby.”

“I’m thinking of them, but I’m hurt, Brie,” I told her shakily as tears started to fall again.

“Why don’t you try talking to him when he is sober? You said he was drunk. Wait till tomorrow, when he is sober, and talk to him again so that you will know what exactly happened." Brie’s voice was soft, but it only added to the anger I felt.

“I don’t want to hear whatever excuse he has to make. It will always be the same excuse: I didn’t know what was happening; I am sorry; it was a mistake. I don’t want stupid excuses like that."

“So, what are you going to do? You have to talk to him about it, whether you like it or not.” She pushed, but I shook my head.

“I am going to divorce him. I’ve made up my mind, and I won’t change it,” I told her firmly. The tears have stopped falling now.

"Lucy!” Brie exclaimed. “That’s a big decision. Think about it first, please." Brie pleaded.

"Brie,” I said, looking at her with so much hurt. “How can you tell me to reconsider when you know that my mom committed suicide because my dad cheated on her and even ended up blackmailing her into giving him everything she had? I would never forgive cheating. It took my mom from me....” I broke down; the memory was too painful.

My mom had been so shattered when my father cheated. I was young, but old enough to remember every tear she shed, and every hateful word Dad had thrown at her. He made her believe it was her fault. He was the one who cheated but he manipulated her into giving him everything she had until she couldn’t take it anymore.

Brie pulled me into a hug. “I remember. I’m sorry, Lucy. Trust me, I understand, but divorce is a big step, and do you really want your baby to grow up without their father?”

I pulled back and nodded. “What use is a father who cheats?" I spat. “My baby is better off without knowing such a terrible person, and I won’t live in a marriage with a man who doesn’t respect me. I won’t be my mother."

Brie sighed. She knew there was nothing to say to me that would make me change my mind. “If that’s what you want, then I am ready to be by your side.”

“Thank you,” I sniffed. I reached for my bag and brought out my phone before dialling my lawyer’s number.

“Mr. Adams, I want to divorce Kelvin."
