Chapter one

ELOISE

“Honey! You left your files on my bedside table. I guess they’re important to you.”

I picked up the files and headed straight to the living room but didn’t find my husband there.

“Ma'am, the boss left early today. He said something about the inauguration ceremony.”

“Oh, dang! My miserable memory. I forgot about that.” Today was the inauguration ceremony, the day my husband would finally own the company. He’s been the acting CEO for the past few years. I should have been there for him too!

I quickly took a bath and rushed over to GED, the biggest construction company in Italy.

However, I was refused entrance to my own husband’s company.

“Excuse me?” My brows drew up in confusion.

“Sorry, ma’am, but only invited individuals are allowed in,” the security guard apologized.

“I know that, but I’m the CEO’s wife. Won’t you be in trouble if the CEO finds out you kept his wife outside? Besides, I need to give him some documents he left at home.”

“Don’t be like that, ma’am. The CEO came with his wife,” one of the security men said.

“What?”

“Yeah, I’m sure of it. The CEO came with his wife. She’s been visiting for a long time, and we’re all familiar with her face. You come here for the first time claiming to be the CEO’s wife? Can you stoop any lower to get what you want, ma’am?” another guard confronted me.

I was so embarrassed that my legs suddenly became wobbly. Still, I couldn’t move an inch from where I stood.

“Look. I mean Mr. Damon Huxley, the—”

“Are you okay, ma’am? We don’t have two CEOs at this company. I advise that you go back home. Other guests are arriving, and—”

“He’s my husband, and I need to deliver important documents! Wait until he answers this call. And believe me, you both will be fired.”

I wasn’t going to back down. I dialed Damon’s number, and after five attempts, he still declined my calls. The embarrassment was eating me up inside. Could they be telling the truth?

Damon has never told me much about his company. He said I didn’t need to visit, nor did I need to work—maybe because of my health. I’m sure of that, even though he claimed it was because he had more than enough money, and it was unnecessary for me to get a job.

I was diagnosed with cancer a few days after our wedding, and for a whole four years, I’ve been from one treatment to another. My husband was cool with it. He never shouted at me or got angry that I’d become a liability instead of fulfilling the future we planned together.

“Could you at least let me see Mr. Damon? He probably needs these documents, and what if he sends someone home to get them? That would be a waste of his time. God damn it, fellows, can’t you listen?” I raised my voice, losing my patience. I was ready to fight my way in.

“What’s going on here, madam?” A well-built, middle-aged man stopped in front of me, likely the chief of security.

“Oh, thank goodness. If you’d just listen to me. I have to give these documents to Mr. Damon.”

“Did you book an appointment, ma’am?”

I held my breath, biting my lip and clenching my fists in anger. “I don’t need to book an appointment to see my husband!” I said through clenched teeth.

“Unfortunately, ma’am, I think you’re at the wrong—” I didn’t let him finish before I pushed my way through the entrance and rushed into the company’s event hall.

A large crowd had gathered, all dressed to impress.

I wasn’t wearing much. The only thing elegant on me was the gown my husband gifted me for our 5th anniversary, which had been released at a boutique two months ago. I was still underweight, so the gown looked a little big on me.

My eyes scanned the hall until they landed on Damon. For a moment, I heaved a sigh of relief. A small grin appeared on my face as I waved to him and hastened my steps toward him.

As I got closer, I saw a pretty woman holding my husband, her head leaning on his shoulder.

“Honey, you forgot this!” I smiled and gently untangled the woman who was glued to my husband.

“Did you just say honey? Who is this woman?” she asked Damon, her voice loud enough to attract almost everyone’s attention. Damon looked speechless.

“Why the hell are you here, Eloise?” Damon muttered.

I turned toward the fair, pretty homewrecker. “I should be asking that question, miss. He might be your CEO, but that shoulder you just leaned on belongs to me. His wife.”

She scoffed. “You look like you escaped from a mental hospital because what the hell are you talking about, calling my husband yours?”

This woman was classy in every way. Her diction was perfect, and her style was top-notch. Somehow, I knew I looked like the fake one. Whatever was happening was beginning to overwhelm me.

Cameras kept flashing in our direction, and I knew what that meant. The press wouldn’t miss an opportunity to make extra cash off this scene.

“Enough of this embarrassment, Eloise. How long will you keep dwelling on the illusion that I’m still your husband? Do you really consider yourself worthy of being part of our prestigious family? What you’re holding in your hand is the divorce paper that you signed yourself. Maybe you got dementia post-cancer also.” Damon’s voice echoed across the hall.

Something wasn’t right. Damon had never raised his voice at me. These couldn’t be the words from the mouth that kissed me passionately the previous night. The look in his eyes had changed—they were no longer loving.

Damon turned to the cameras and bowed in apology. “I’m truly sorry for the trouble my ex-wife has caused today. I will take responsibility for this and personally escort her out.”

His hands gripped my wrist as he hastily dragged me out of the company’s entrance door.

“What was the meaning of that, Damon?” My voice quavered.

“What does it look like, Eloise? I’m fed up. I just wanted a marriage, and you turned me into your nanny.”

“Damon!” I lashed out.

“Look, I’m sorry, but everything is fine now. My cancer treatment ended a year ago, and I’m perfectly fine now. I promise—”

“Fine? You think you’re fine now, Eloise? This isn’t the woman I married. What if word gets out that you can’t conceive? You’re barren now. Has that not registered in your thick skull yet?”

“Don’t be like that, Damon. We can—”

“Get your hands off me! There’s no ‘we’ anymore, Eloise. The only way to fix this is for you to be reborn. Eloise, I loved you, but your life is too complicated and quite unbefitting for my social class now. I guess your father hasn’t told you yet?”

Damon pushed my hands off his body.

“What hasn’t my father told me yet?” I mumbled through my tears. My heart was too weak to handle the pain I was going through at that moment. “I’m sorry, Damon, but please don’t do this to me. You love me, and I love you too. I can’t live without you.” I held his hands, watching as my tears fell, but he wasn’t moved in the slightest.

“Let go, Eloise.” Damon pushed me to the floor. I didn’t care about the rain that had already soaked my clothes. I held onto his shoes and begged for his heart to beat for me again, for one last chance.

“That’s enough, lady. Don’t you dare touch my husband, or else you’ll pay for it with your life!” the other woman said. Damon kicked my grip away from his shoes and held the other woman by the waist.

I had been betrayed by the only man I loved, and now I wished the rain could wash me away into my grave. I sat on the cold, rain-soaked floor and cried my eyes out.

Being embarrassed by the flicking cameras or the many eyes that glared at me in pity was the last thing I thought about.

Chapter two
Eloise I'm not crying because of my now ex-husband. He's not worth it.. I'm crying because my delusion of who he was has been shattered by the truth of who he is. I was the only family my father had. His only brother severed ties with him years ago and it was all because of me, and I still haven’t figured out what I did. Leaving him alone in this world would break him. The issue with Damon wasn’t in any way because of my family's background. He loved me knowing my father has lost everything and has almost nothing except for old friends and connections from my grandfather and an empty museum art gallery.Damon's problem was me. Maybe things would have turned out differently If only I could conceive and give him a child. The rain suddenly stopped soaking my skin, and when I looked up, Ale

Chapter Three
ELOISETwenty minutes later, a car pulled up in front of Alex's house. I was sitting outside, waiting beside Alex for Laura to arrive. The screeching sound cleared the rest of the alcohol from my system.I looked up to see Laura stepping out, her long black hair swinging as she hurried towards me. Her face was filled with concern, but there was a familiar hint of frustration in her eyes. When she saw how pale I was, she sighed, clearly feeling sorry for me, but it didn’t stop her from giving me a piece of her mind.“You’re still young and beautiful, Eloise! Damon is so going to regret doing this to you. I promise to make sure of that. It's better you divorce him.” She turned towards Alex and gave a fake giggle. "Hi, Alex. Thank you for not calling me. I've been going around town searching for her.""You are welcome," Alex replied with a smile. Those two never stayed a minute without fighting each other.I shook my head, my heart aching. It felt as if the pain in my heart worsened afte

ELOISE“What the hell?”“That’s for being a bitch,” she walked away with a grin. *Living daylight psycho!*“Can I help you?” A man offered, but immediately after I removed the strands of hair across my face and pulled back, he zoomed off.I looked around, confused. I wanted to find Laura to clear up my confusion, but she was nowhere to be found. Everyone around me was paired up. I was the only one alone.Shaking off the feeling of isolation, I grabbed another glass of wine. “This will be the last,” I promised myself. I obviously didn’t want to get drunk in this kind of atmosphere. As I sipped the wine slowly, the feeling of wanting to be with someone disappeared, but then came the staggering effect, and I managed not to bump into a man.“Hi, my name’s Lucius,” his voice whispered from behind me. His voice was deep and soothing.I slowly turned around. The man was also wearing a mask, so I couldn’t see his face, but he looked a lot like the guy I’d met earlier.“I don’t think I need yo

Chapter five
Eloise I suddenly opened my eyes wide to see the mess I'd made. My head was killing me from the effect of the alcohol. But thankfully, the man was gone. I heaved a sigh of relief since I didn’t know how or what I would've done. How the hell was I going to face a stranger now that the alcohol's effect was gone, except for the banging headache? I bit my lips and tiptoed to the corner of the room where I’d started to take my clothes off. I found a box and a note on my handbag, but I was too panicked to check it out. I just shoved everything back inside. Like an expert, I put all my clothes back on and tiptoed out of the room. And out of the hotel. Laura was a bitch. I couldn’t see her car outside where she’d parked it earlier, which meant she’d already left without me. I flagged a cab down to drop me home. Thankfully, I made it just in time; 6:50 a.m., ten minutes before my father would be up. I walked in confidently with my shoes in my hands. "Holy moly!" I jumped when

Eloise*Five years later.*"I’d never go to that party if it weren’t for the upcoming exhibition. Gosh, those people only care about showcasing their money!" My father grumbled at the other end of the phone."Dad, don’t be like that. You need to meet lots of people to broaden your horizon. It’s not just about the money. Besides, you need money as well.""Here you go again! You’ve grown so much that you lecture me about money now. By the way, what have you been munching on?""Nothing, Dad." I stopped chewing and giggled."Nothing? Doesn’t that sound like chips? Have you been skipping your meals because of work?"I smacked my lips. "No, Dad. I didn’t skip any... I mean, not many meals," I stuttered."Not again! I wonder what you’re feeding my grandchildren. I told you that a responsible adult doesn’t skip meals. Who cares if you’ve become one of the best curators if you can’t even feed yourself properly? I’m sure there’s no food there.""There is... I’ll make something once we’re done t

LucianoI ran a hand through my hair, trying to make sense of the disaster unfolding in front of me. I just couldn’t believe it. I needed to secure this contract today—no, I must secure it today. My mind flashed to the argument I had with my grandfather earlier, my fists clenching at the memory. I’d bragged about proving him wrong, and bringing the two billion contract home. And now, here I was, about to mess it all up."So you’re telling me I’m in the wrong place at the right time?" I said through clenched teeth, my jaw tight with frustration. Her face flushed red, her body tensing at my outburst. "Goodness! I’m sorry. You came to me first. Are you seriously trying to blame me for this mess?" Her arms crossed defensively over her chest. I exhaled sharply and raised a hand "No, no. That’s not what I meant. Let's get out of here. I need to leave now. You shouldn’t worry—I’ll pay for the painting. How much is it?"Her lips pressed into a tight line as she answered, "Two

Chapter Eight
LUCIANOI can't possibly impose on a poor international student, and besides, you shouldn't be bringing strangers into your home," I said once we got to Eloise's house. She'd offered to house me until the next day."That should be a thank you, right? Besides, how do you know I'm not from here?"I scoffed. "Your Italian accent is still there. Somehow though."She smacked her lips. "I thought I worked on that already."Once she pushed the door open, three adorably looking children ran out in our direction, and freaking hell, they skipped Eloise to come hug me."Daddy!"I crouched down to my feet. "How come you all look so adorable? Oh my goodness. But too bad, I'm not your daddy." I ran my hand across their heads and hugged them tightly.I felt different. Like starting home wouldn't be entirely bad."You didn't tell me you take care of young children as well, Eloise. You must be working really hard to earn a living," I said once the children gave me a little space."Those are my—""I'm

Luciano "How can a private investigator struggle to find one girl? Is she invisible or what? I paid him handsomely!" "Its not that easy to find someone without a face. I'd tell him to hurry things up" my secretary said.. I still couldn't get Eloise off my head. Wondering what exactly I did wrong that night. Was i such a bad kisser that she had me thrown out of her house late at night while crying. I just couldn't wrap my head around everything. But I still had to find the girl from five years ago. Atleast I owe her an apology. "Call the private investigator again. Tell him that the sooner he finds her the more like he is to get ten times of what I initially offered" "Ten times? That'd be twenty million sir" "I need him to see how much I am willing to pay for him to get this done, that way he will take it seriously " I leaned back in the chair and rested my hand on the table.
