Eloise

I suddenly opened my eyes wide to see the mess I'd made. My head was killing me from the effect of the alcohol.

But thankfully, the man was gone.

I heaved a sigh of relief since I didn’t know how or what I would've done. How the hell was I going to face a stranger now that the alcohol's effect was gone, except for the banging headache?

I bit my lips and tiptoed to the corner of the room where I’d started to take my clothes off. I found a box and a note on my handbag, but I was too panicked to check it out. I just shoved everything back inside. Like an expert, I put all my clothes back on and tiptoed out of the room.

And out of the hotel.

Laura was a bitch.

I couldn’t see her car outside where she’d parked it earlier, which meant she’d already left without me.

I flagged a cab down to drop me home. Thankfully, I made it just in time; 6:50 a.m., ten minutes before my father would be up. I walked in confidently with my shoes in my hands.

"Holy moly!" I jumped when I saw my father standing next to the door.

"Good morning to you too, Eloise. I was expecting you home since yesterday."

"Don’t tell me you didn’t sleep, Dad!"

"I did. On the couch. Do you even have the slightest idea how worried I was?"

"I should have called," I apologized.

"Oh, you should! How is Alex?"

"How did you know, Dad?"

"Laura came looking for you this morning, and I also heard Alex came to GED yesterday," Father said and led me to the dining room. Even from a distance, my nostrils were already filled with the perfect aroma of my favorite meal.

"You always know my heart, Father!" I dropped my bag and shoes on the couch and went all in for the food.

A few minutes in, my father cleared his throat. "It's a good thing it’s over with Damon. You helped him climb up there, and now he’s forgotten all about it. It’s totally my fault. If I didn’t lose all of my money due to bad choices, this wouldn’t have happened."

"Daddy..." I could feel the pain in his voice. He was so happy when I was dating Damon and even gave his blessing. I guess he never believed a day would come when he would hate that decision.

"Eat up and go to work. I will introduce you to someone better."

I nodded. "That would be after I return, Dad. I'm leaving Italy as soon as I can."

*****

Four weeks later.

I stared in a daze at the hospital test results in my hand.

"Four weeks pregnant? How? I was supposed to be barren. The doctor said my womb was damaged. And how could I get pregnant from just one night with that psychopath stranger who was weirdly good?" I murmured to myself. I had completely forgotten about that crazy night, but after getting sick, I went to the hospital for a test.

It was like a miracle to me because the doctor had said post-cancer that my eggs were like those of a 68-year-old woman and that IVF wasn’t even an option.

Suppressing my frustration, I shoved the test results into my bag. Not being able to get pregnant was the reason Damon hated me. Now that I had the chance to bear a child, there was no way I would abort this baby!

Eloise*Five years later.*"I’d never go to that party if it weren’t for the upcoming exhibition. Gosh, those people only care about showcasing their money!" My father grumbled at the other end of the phone."Dad, don’t be like that. You need to meet lots of people to broaden your horizon. It’s not just about the money. Besides, you need money as well.""Here you go again! You’ve grown so much that you lecture me about money now. By the way, what have you been munching on?""Nothing, Dad." I stopped chewing and giggled."Nothing? Doesn’t that sound like chips? Have you been skipping your meals because of work?"I smacked my lips. "No, Dad. I didn’t skip any... I mean, not many meals," I stuttered."Not again! I wonder what you’re feeding my grandchildren. I told you that a responsible adult doesn’t skip meals. Who cares if you’ve become one of the best curators if you can’t even feed yourself properly? I’m sure there’s no food there.""There is... I’ll make something once we’re done t

LucianoI ran a hand through my hair, trying to make sense of the disaster unfolding in front of me. I just couldn’t believe it. I needed to secure this contract today—no, I must secure it today. My mind flashed to the argument I had with my grandfather earlier, my fists clenching at the memory. I’d bragged about proving him wrong, and bringing the two billion contract home. And now, here I was, about to mess it all up."So you’re telling me I’m in the wrong place at the right time?" I said through clenched teeth, my jaw tight with frustration. Her face flushed red, her body tensing at my outburst. "Goodness! I’m sorry. You came to me first. Are you seriously trying to blame me for this mess?" Her arms crossed defensively over her chest. I exhaled sharply and raised a hand "No, no. That’s not what I meant. Let's get out of here. I need to leave now. You shouldn’t worry—I’ll pay for the painting. How much is it?"Her lips pressed into a tight line as she answered, "Two

She'd offered to house me until the next day."That should be a thank you, right? Besides, how do you know I'm not from here?"I scoffed. "Your Italian accent is still there. Somehow though."She smacked her lips. "I thought I worked on that already."Once she pushed the door open, three adorably looking children ran out in our direction, and freaking hell, they skipped Eloise to come hug me."Daddy!"I crouched down to my feet. "How come you all look so adorable? Oh my goodness. But too bad, I'm not your daddy." I ran my hand across their heads and hugged them tightly.I felt different. Like starting home wouldn't be entirely bad."You didn't tell me you take care of young children as well, Eloise. You must be working really hard to earn a living," I said once the children gave me a little space."Those are my—""I'm

I'd tell him to hurry things up" my secretary said.. I still couldn't get Eloise off my head. Wondering what exactly I did wrong that night. Was i such a bad kisser that she had me thrown out of her house late at night while crying. I just couldn't wrap my head around everything. But I still had to find the girl from five years ago. Atleast I owe her an apology. "Call the private investigator again. Tell him that the sooner he finds her the more like he is to get ten times of what I initially offered" "Ten times? That'd be twenty million sir" "I need him to see how much I am willing to pay for him to get this done, that way he will take it seriously " I leaned back in the chair and rested my hand on the table. ELOISEThe evening sky was heavy, and soon after I left the office, it began to drizzle. The street looked bleak under the hazy, misting rain, making the streetlights seem dimmer.I sat in the driver’s seat, one hand on the wheel, the other propped up beside the window. It was fair enough that the restaurant for the blind date wasn’t far from the museum.I pulled into the parking spot of Octopus Restaurant and stepped out, walking with even, graceful strides. My eyes roamed over the restaurant, and I couldn’t help but wonder why on earth he chose an octopus restaurant of all places.“I don’t eat octopus; I’m allergic to it,” I reminded myself again, mentally rehearsing what I’d say if he ordered something that didn’t sit well with me.Something like an octopus. I haven’t been to Italy for a while, but I never imagined octopus would still be sold in the twenty-first century. I can’t wrap my head around it.I quickened my pace as my eyes settled on a corner table where a man was waiting

LUCIANO"I don't know why she's here but it's definitely unlike her. She never visited you before" James said trembling on his feet. "Well let her in ofcourse" Eloise was probably trying to get to know more about herself. She was always busy running her museum and I am always the one visiting to help out and strategize but today she came and I am glad she found time to visit. "I wasn't expecting you El" I said with a smile ushering her to seat at the cushion while I abandoned my work to join her. However instead of reciprocated smile, I got a slap on my cheek instead and I could only scoff. "Did you know about this?" She asked and hands her tabs over to me. " If you were going to lie to me, to deceive me just because of money, you could have atleast had a rethink. I almost died but all you and your family care about is purchasing every piece of land around the museum "I got really annoyed but I won't blame her. She was at her most vulnerable state that she could easily be decei

I didn't want to lose my husband to the hands of a random slut . Even though I insisted that we stay in the same room, he sleeps on the couch and leaves the king sized bed for him But tonight I won't let him. I'm a human too and I'm sure he is! I was about to break the king silence before luckily he spoke up. "It's unlike you to insist on sharing the same room with me. I guess the accident really messed with your head" Luciano said with a chuckle as he lay on the couch close to the television. " No. I just feel a married couple should share a bed. I don't know how shitty my personality have been while we are married but I do appreciate that you saved me from my ex-husband. That asshole would have manipulated his way into my life again" I said . I already heard from the news about all that hap

LUCIANO.“Had Eloise been drinking on the night that she lost control of the car?” Lazio asked. I and Alex sat in an Irish pub a few blocks from my office.. Alex was on his second scotch and water. “Nope. For some reasons she had sworn not to take alcohol anymore " “What about Florence?” he asked, wondering about the woman who no one seemed to know. Eloise's employee. “No one knows what she’d been doing but there was a little alcohol in her bloodstream. Not much.” From the booth where we sat, my gaze followed a couple of guys who were throwing darts near the back of the bar."Eloise and she were close?” “As close as Eloise gets I suppose, but from work I think she's the one that relates more with Eloise” Alex swirled his drink. Ice cubes danced in the weak light. “El, didn’t have a lot of friends.”That surprised Lazio “She sure as hell got a lot of cards and flowers in the hospital”“It’s expected. We’re pretty high-profile around here.” I yanked at the knot of my tie .C

The lab coat was a couple of sizes too big, but it didn’t matter. It was all the camouflage I needed. One of the burn ward nurses hadn’t shown up for duty tonight—her car had been disabled, her cell phone stolen—and the other two were run ragged as the hospital searched for staff to fill the void. By the time they managed that, I’d be finished. The lights were too bright for my liking, but there wasn’t much I could do about that. I shoved a pair of tortoise-rimmed glasses onto my nose. Slipping into my role of intern easily, I walked with confidence. The name tag on my lapel and picture were of Charles Steve. I figured no one would notice that the image on the card didn’t match my face as I strode with the authority of someone who knew what they were doing. That I belonged. What a joke. I’d never belonged anywhere. Had always been on the outside looking in. Well now I wasn’t only looking, I was fucking pounding on the window. Near the burn ward, I lingered in an alcove, then

ELOISE I remember this place. The car sped up a narrow, winding street to the summit of Pian dei Giullari and my heart leaped as I caught my first glimpse of the house mounted at the most prestigious point on the ridge. Yes, yes, yes! I’d been here before—I was sure of it. Since leaving the hospital, I’d been in a foul mood, but some of that was dissipating as fragments of memory—tickles of my past—flashed behind my eyes. There was a ring… I glanced down at my left hand, frowning. Not the diamonds glittering there, but a simpler band I recalled. And there were other things, walking in a building filled with different paintings. I was a curator after all. so I was told. Less than thirty minutes ago, when I’d been driven out of the hospital, trepidation had settled deep inside me. Even as Alex helped me to calm, , I couldn’t shake the unease curling in my gut. he’d driven us away, past the lush greenery of Golden Gate Park, through the gingerbread Victorians of Ha

Eloise’s POv Five days later, I was finally getting ready to be released. Dr. Sage had run every test imaginable, seemed satisfied with the results, and now I was just waiting for the paperwork and a ride. The door to my hospital room creaked open, and a man poked his head inside. “Mrs. Eloise?” he asked. “I’m Detective Lazio, Firenze Provincia Police Department.” My heart plummeted. He stepped inside, dressed in dark slacks with a jacket tossed over a casual shirt. He would be full of questions. Questions I had no answers for. My head was clearer now, but the glimpses I had into my past were like the flame of a lighter running out of fuel—images would spark and sputter, flicker and die, leaving me with nothing. He flashed his badge, and my stomach twisted. “Sorry to bother you here at the hospital,” Lazio apologized. He had a hound-dog face, deep brown eyes, and a solemn, concerned expression. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but I wasn’t buying it. I remembered Lau

DAMON Panic clawed at my throat, suffocating me. I paced the length of the warehouse, my fingers digging into my scalp as I tried to silence the chaos in my head. The room smelled of gunpowder and damp concrete, the flickering overhead lights casting shadows that seemed to grow. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Luciano wasn’t supposed to get this far. He was supposed to be dead. I should have killed him a long time ago! I raked my hands through my hair, my breaths coming in sharp, uneven gasps. "Calm down Damon" "Mother, don't tell me to calm down . You have no idea what's going to on.. if Luciano decides to crush me after all this, it won't take more than 24 hours " " Glad you know that well enough before you started your obsession with your ex wife , whom is now his wife. stay clear of those people, I warned. Luciano’s POVThe air inside the SUV was thick with tension as we sped toward the abandoned estate. The rhythmic hum of the tires against the road did nothing to quiet the storm raging inside me. My fingers curled tightly around the leather of my seat, my jaw clenched so hard it ached. Every passing second felt like a blade scraping against my skin. My children were out there, scared, alone, and in the hands of a man who had long overstayed his welcome in this world. Damon thought he could take them from me. That I would kneel. That I would break. He was about to learn how wrong he was. Alex sat beside me, double-checking his weapons. His usual cocky smirk was gone, replaced by a sharp, lethal focus. “Scouts say there are at least six men on guard,” he muttered, not looking up. “But they’re sloppy. They’re not expecting an ambush.” I nodded, my mind already running through the attack plan. “We go in fast, silent. No unnecessary casualties.” I exhaled slowly. “But if anyone t
