Ayla is already late when she entered the lobby. Her parka jacket and her hair are slightly touched by rain. With a bag and car keys in her hand, she rushed to the elevator which she found occupied. She moved to drive another one. But when she saw the person inside the elevator, her legs paralyzed. Ayla stared at the tall man in the black suit. He was keeping his middle button of his suit. He looked simple, sophisticated and subtle. He would have already recognized her. A wave of embarrassment hit her when she remembered what she did yesterday. He neither said anything nor his face showed anything. He looked at her as if she is nothing and pressed a button. The doors of elevator are closed on her face.
"I'm dating an artist. He is cute." If it isn't for this message, Ayla could've met Jayden formally. She could've said 'good evening' and he could've wished her as well or smiled. What a coincidence! Vanessa has a date and Ayla stayed late. Quinn is dating and she spilled coffee on her boss's shirt. She tried not to get him into her head again. But what happened in the lobby decided otherwise.
‘Isn't he generous enough to share a ride with me?’ she thought. ‘What the hell. Why would he do that?’ He is her boss. But it's not his private elevator. It's for the staff. "Argh!!"
"Thanks for filling me yesterday." Vanessa hugged her from behind. "The date went well." She chirped." Thank you so much."
Even though she felt like saying,'Yeah. That's the worst decision I've ever made. Thanks to your stupid date', Ayla managed to say, "No problem. You are always welcome."
While Vanessa was explaining about her date, her face glowed with much radiance than usual, a light redness swept across her cheeks, her eyes shined with delight.
With her thoughts wandering over what's going to happen, Ayla cannot concentrate on any other things. Chill Ayla, it's just a coffee, of course, a hot coffee on your boss's expensive shirt. Like Einstein said, one hour in the work felt like one day. When she can't stomach it anymore, she beckoned Vanessa to come closer. She moved her chair out of her cubicle and drew closer to Ayla’s.
"Um.. I watched a drama yesterday and it left me hanging onto the cliff. You know, I'm kinda curious. The girl is an employee at the guy's empire. They never met each other before. But unexpectedly, she ran into him and spilled coffee, a very hot coffee on his shirt. He didn't say a word and left. What do you think will happen to her?"
For a second Vanessa whirled her few strands of her curly hair around the pencil in her hand and the next second, her eyes popped out before she raised from her chair, " Ayla, You spilled coffee on Mr.Knight!" It's a question and exclamation at the same time which was loud enough to caught the attention of all the other team members in their room.
Why the hell did she forget that Vanessa is smart and she has a high pitched voice? Ayla quickly pulled her grabbing her hand and made her sit. They lowered their bodies so that the other people won't notice their "little chat.”
Before she could give her friend a proper explanation, a pair of stilleto black heals stood before them. Both of their eyes moved from her to five inches heels to her creamy long legs to her mini Black skirt and to grey blouse. And her face, wow! A nude lipstick on her round lips, bright almond eyes and forehead covered with front bangs, silky brown hair tied in a perfect ponytail only made her look ravishing. She is a sight for sour eyes. They both stared at her in awe just like all other members in the room.
She looked at Ayla and smiled," Miss.Sargin, Mr.Knight has summoned you."
The next question came from Vanessa," Are you sure you spilled coffee but not acid. Why is he calling you?"
Ayla’s heart has already dropped down to her stomach. Fidgeting with her fingers, she followed whoever came to take her. She tried to make some conversation with this woman to get some information. "Um.. you could have just sent a word."
"No. I had a work there and picked you on my way back." The rest of the ride is silent. As they entered into the lobby, only the colors of grey and white, simple yet modernized crystal furniture and no people greeted her. This entire floor has only two large enclosed rooms and a small cabin which had the words "Stephanie Joseph" engraved on its glass door. Ayla felt that this floor is a reflection of Mr.Knight, simple, cool, rich and elusive.
They stopped at a door. The woman extended her palm towards the door showing that this is her destination. She nodded and opened it slightly.
A fleeting glance at his entire office showed her a large bay containing many books, records, magazines and much more swept across one side of the room. The books are the only colors there, everything is white and grey along with the large sofa placed near that "mini library", his glass table, the apple laptop, the ceiling and the floor. Through the glass wall that stood as a partition between the room and balcony, one can see the sky and the city. It is such a beautiful view.
Jayden is busy in whatever he is reading. She would rather say scrutinizing. His chiseled face is bent slightly to a side. His left hand tugged at his tie loosening it. He placed the hand on the table, his finger curled towards the palm a little. His eyes are deep, he has absolutely no visible upper eyelid exposure that merely made him more attractive. And she felt that those ocean blue pupils hold more than anything he could show to the world.
They say something. She always feels that. A few strands of brown hair fell on his face when he bent forward to grab a pen. His eyes never left the file, but his hand took the exact pen he needed from the stand which also contained many pencils and markers. ‘This man will never fail to amaze me.’ Ayla told herself. He sucked his lips in moistening them a little before signing that paper.
She can easily say it because he drew his pen to the end of the paper and being the CEO , he wouldn't have any other use with a pen.
Ayla found herself trembling when she made a knock on the door. He lifted his eyes to look at her without raising his head. She is so sure that someday, those eyes will be her death. They lingered on her for at least five seconds and in those few seconds, he studied her well. Too well, that he could easily measure the length of her hair, size of her blouse button and even the brand of her watch. He doesn't just see, he observes, he reads and she is definitely an open book for him.
She suddenly felt naked and vulnerable before him. It is a waste to even mask her tension. He knew and he will know and she came to know that just with his wandering gaze. He pointed his pen towards the chair before him.
She took a step forward when someone opened the other door and walked past her. All she could see is a back of woman who wore a white mini dress which appeared as gaudy with a very expensive leather bag.
"Surprise." She said extending her hands a little on either ways. But Jayden is not even a kilometer close to surprise.
"At least act as if you are surprised." She said walking straightly to his table on her cut out heels. Ayla looked at herself in a fit trouser and a sky blue colored blouse. For the first time in the year, she stepped in this floor and for the first time in the year, she felt like she doesn't belong in this office. Flashes of a vague memory just like this, a feeling just like this appeared at a glimpse which lasted for an eternity second. This is something she felt before but she couldn't figure out when and where.
All her thoughts were interrupted when Mr. Knight spoke, "I expected you here. But not in this hour." He voice was deep, strong and controlled.
She stood there looking at both of them. She doesn't even know whether to stay or leave. Jayden looked at her and said," I'll see you again Miss.Sargin. " He pronounced it so clearly and correctly.
Ayla nodded saying yes in a tremulous voice. She quickly turned around and about to pull the door to get out of this intimidating environment, she heard the woman say, "Wait."
She doesn't know whom she is referring to. Her hand stopped in the midway. She didn't turn. She waited to make sure that she referred to her.
"Let her go." Came at once the sharp voice of Jayden, and Ayla didn't wait for another second. She ran to the elevator and then to the terrace. It is drizzling a little. She didn't care. She stood in the middle and gasped as she let the breath that she held till now out. Her face and hair now has the touch of water drops. If she stayed there for another minute, she will be wet completely.
It is a foreign feeling for her. She is never used to that or never felt that before. Why is his gaze, so intense piercing her from head to toe, she wouldn’t understand. Being a second alone with this man, took her breath away, at the same time filled her with new life. He didn’t say anything rude, he didn’t even give a glare, he didn’t wear any kind of knives on his chest, yet he scares her. It is not the fear that he could do some potential harm to her; it is an unknown intimidation to which her body reacted without her knowledge. The rain drops are harsh on her sensitive skin. She raised her head to feel the more of piercing cold drops on her face. Slowly closing her eyes, she remembered the River Trent, the rain there. Her heart is filled with unknown agony. She started to miss something. She has no idea what. “Is that, that bad?” the voice came from the
NOTTINGHAM SEVEN YEARS BACK Ayla felt like she is sitting at the edge of a cliff, it is both excitement of meeting Blake for the first time and fear meeting many new people at the new school. She wished her father drop her off at least say how to behave or few father – daughter talks before she goes to school. But he left the home before she even woke up. She said to herself that he is a busy man that he will talk to her later. Her step brother Jack dropped her with much disgust as if she took away a very important aspect of his valuable time. Biting her lips, and fixing her sling bag, she walked briskly with a masked confidence, deep inside, she is trembling with dread. “Waoh, looker.” She heard who passed by her on skating wheels say. She didn’t understand the reason behind his jaw dropping, whether it is good or bad. She sets her red hair straight, and hurried to the office room and right before she e
NOTTINGHAMSEVEN YEARS AGO Ayla doesn’t know the meanings of the words such as bint or naff. Even if she knows good English, sometimes the slang is beyond her. When she checked them on the internet, she felt horrible, not to mention the words students used to call her, things they did to her always kept her in tears. Not even a single night after coming to Nottingham, she slept peacefully or went to bed without lying to her mother. Being in everyone’s mouths, becoming target to every harsh act is hardly endurable. Slowly, she lost confidence in herself. No matter what happens, she could never go to her dad. She highly doubts if she could even say hi to him and ask how his day was. She really hoped that Blake comes to her aid. He never did. And on one particular day, she finally saw his true colors. The same girl in the red skirt before now came in pink. Being the
LONDON PRESENT DAY Ayla looked at her reflection in the mirror and for the first time in her life, as far as she remembers, she admired her work on herself. Her short red hair has smoothened more with the striaghtener, she didn’t put much effort on doing her face as she put on her hair, a blush nude matte lipstick and a moisturizer did enough magic. She selected a blue colored 3/4 sleeve elegant pencil peplum dress. After all, she is now working at a mega corporation; she has to look elegant, class, and simple as per her comfort. The dress is in suitable hourglass shape with ruffles on the right side which hugged her body tightly showing all her curves perfectly. She always preferred simple pumps, but this time, she wore black pointed high heels. Her confidence rose to a new next level with the new perfect look. All thanks to her old boss. If he hadn’t called yesterday and informed that
PRESENT DAY LONDON “No. I don’t know if it is fated or just coincidence or whatever. You mother cheated on your dad. You were easily tricked by a school girl. This is the biggest joke that has been played in front of my eyes.” An evil laugh played on Jack’s long face underneath a very less hair. His eyes are so small that the triumphant laugh made him look like he bore some holes instead of eyes. He thought he got under his opponent’s skins who are there for a meeting – Jayden and Mason. His words only worked on Mason who has lost his calm and raised from his chair with so much force and rage that he kicked that chair behind. “You son of a bitch.” He cursed. “As far as I remember,” Said Jack with a smirk, “It is Jayden who is the son of a bitch.” Apparently, the words Jack delivered at Jayden hits Mason first. Jayden doesn’t seem to be intruded or slightly moved b
“I don’t understand, Mr. Cliff. What do you mean by I didn’t do well?” Ayla questioned impatiently. She has checked her list for hundred times since it is the first ever significant work she got to do at Knight & Gray. The old man in his mid forties- Mr. Cliff, shook his head removing his glasses with a stern look, “Rupert's report and the list he has made is quite outstanding. I suppose, it is the best when compared to you.” “But, I –” He waves his hand dismissively, “No. Miss. Sargin. This is no use arguing over this. Get this file another photocopy. I reckon you can do the job well.” Ayla sighed getting back to her regular photocopy machine with a look of contempt. She is so sure she did well. Rupert, on the other side, is having a friendly chat with some other boys. Ayla made her way to him. He looked at her incredulously. Most of the staff doesn’t really know her and even if they did, Ayla has no reputation in friendly talks. “I am Ayla. I was wondering if I c
Nottingham Few Years Back That evening Ayla was more cheerful at the dinner table than she was in the entire five months of her stay at Nottingham. Her step brother, with whom she never shared at least a two minutes of conversation was burning like a volcano which is going to be burst at some point. Apparently, he was beaten by someone and her father was as furious he was. Ayla wondered if her father would react the same way if he know that Ayla has been always bullied. Deep inside, she knew that the answer is no. He never noticed her agony and fears. So, he probably wouldn’t give a damn about her happiness. Evelyn is almost in tears for her bruised son. There was certain tension in the family that Ayla has felt like an odd man out. She had no one to share her happiness, no one to listen about Jayden Knight and Mason Gray. For a second, she envied Jack. He has perfect mother and father in full health. She dragged her feet to upstairs trying not to interfere in their family affairs. K
LONDON PRESENT DAY “Jay? Is that a short form for Jayden? Cool, isn’t it? I can’t believe that he actually did that with her.” Vanessa curled her hands into a fist and shoves it to Ayla’s face who is turning the steering wheel with her eyes fixed on the road, brain thinking about the truck that has always haunted her and the ears hearing the same word, ‘Jay.’ What is it about that word that is so familiar? Why is she feeling odd and thinking about the accident? She is in a driver seat. She is not supposed to have another panic attack or any visions of her forgotten memory. But, “Watch out.” That piercing scream of her friend made her foot press the break and her car stopped amidst a lonely street with a taxi before their car, which Ayla almost crashed into. The driver cursed something while Vanessa is stroking Ayla’s back. All the time, “I am sorry.” Is all Ayla managed to let out. “We almost got hit.” Vanessa bent her
AYLA | NOW My hands are clammy. I stared at the road ahead, sitting in Jayden’s fancy car. The speed hit over 70, and when the hood of the car opened without me asking for it, I released a breath of relief. I closed my eyes, my face towards the sky, and the wind swayed my hair. It’s going to be a mess, I’m sure. But I enjoyed this moment. The wind, the freedom, the thud in my chest, the moment of no thoughts, the clarity in my bones, I love everything about this moment. Did I ever think that I would have someone to depend on completely? That’s exactly what I am doing. I am trusting him with my heart, and my body. I am going to take the leap of faith in him, in us, and I hope fate plays in our favour. We entered into a sumptuous upscale street with many apartments and villas here and there. Either side of the road is lined up with maple trees. I bet it looks more beautiful in the daytime. Jayden stopped the car in front of a tower. Of course, it’s a skyscraper, or how else w
AYLA | NOW I hugged my diary and wiped my tears. I had something I thought I'd never have: a father figure, a brother, and a man, my man who loved me unconditionally and who protected me."Nothing you do will make him leave you." Henry told her. And somehow I did something that made him leave. But he came back for me. He said that he came back for me six months after he left, which is exactly two months after I woke up, and he saw me in Blake's arms. That must have hurt. He felt betrayed. I think I can finally see his pain. He was ready to give Ayla a chance even though he believed that his father died because of her. His love is incomparable. How did I get that lucky? How did it all go down? For now, I closed the dairy. My body and mind were desperate to see him, see the guy who gave me the world, and nothing about him changed now, even though I didn't remember him. I squealed in joy as I got ready for the office, putting some extra effort into my hair and make-up. I chose a two-p
AYLA | THEN He is crazy. She is going to kill him for sure. He even locked her in the car, went to the department store and bought condoms. Not just one but ten. She will kick him on the bed and lock him in the washroom. Then she will sleep while he begs her to open the door. "I swear, Jayden. If you don't take me home today, I might kill you accidentally." "I am taking you, home." He said so casually without giving a second thought about what his words were doing to her, they were giving her hope which she didn't want. "I am not ready for this." She yelled. "You're more than ready." She was. She is. She knows it. She also knows how addictive his touch can be, how blissful his kisses can be and how peaceful she'll be with him. She will be addicted to happiness. That's what her relationship is with him, pure happiness. That's what makes it more precious and fragile. It can be broken. A month away from turning eighteen Ayla already knows that she wants forever w
AYLA It became hard to breathe. It has been two weeks. Two weeks since the break up. Two weeks since she talked to him, since she received a text from and heard about him. She is the one who left. She is the one who ended. He made that so clear. But it hurts. A part of her wondered if he missed her. A part of her wondered why he didn't call her. Did he move on? Of course, he would. He is Jayden Knight. He can have anyone. He said they were a mistake. Of course, he wouldn't regret this. Ayla on the other hand, felt suffocated. She stared at her phone, waiting for his call, even though she knew she wouldn't change her mind if he did and read their old conversations. When will this year be over? When will she find a new city? There are too many memories everywhere. She didn't realise it till now. But Jayden showed her every place in the city, and kissed her in every corner. Her heart swelled at the thought. How long will it take for the pain to go away? She forgot how she used t
JAYDEN | THEN Something changed between them. Ayla became distant again. Ever since she cried in his arms, she started to avoid him. She cried in front of him before without feeling insecure or inferior. It took a lot of time for her to open up. Now, she went back to being reserved again. Jayden was left with a nibbling feeling inside. Something was off. Something was off between them. She kissed him back when he kissed her. It wasn't just the same passion. She said I love you too, when he said, I love you. It wasn't just the same intensity. She didn't pick up the phone after the third ring or the fourth like she usually does. She barely replied to his messages. Her windows weren't opened anymore. Jayden stood, outside her house, staring at her dark room, not knowing where it all went wrong. He called her. It was 11 PM. She has been staying late for a year now. Sometimes they talked until 3 AM. She was online. But his messages were left unread. He lost it then. Gritting h
AYLA Blake joined me for the morning run today. "So?" He asked, panting. "You are going on a date with your boss. You are one lucky girl." I laughed at his words. "I feel like I am a character in a novel." "I hope it's a novel full of smut." I punched him in the stomach. He acted like he couldn't breathe and did a fake cry, holding his stomach. If I didn't know him better, I would have trusted he was really in pain. "I haven't forgiven you yet," I yelled at him and ran faster. He joined me soon. "I am really happy for you." He says. "Need help with what are you going to wear?" I shook my head, "It's weird to take your help for a date with Jayden. Given, you are enemies and all." "When can we move past that?" He asked me with a hope. "When I know the full story." "He became yours. Do you still need to know the full story?" I nod my head. "It is my story. I had to know." "Good to know that you are accepting your past while moving forward in presen
AYLA PRESENT | By this time in my life, I knew so many things about Jayden. They are more than I thought I would. Right now, he is angry. It is pure rage mixed with something else that became hard to comprehend for me. Is it hurt, pain or just love? "No, I left you at your father's mercy." His words came out as a whisper with a heavy tone as though it was hurting him to talk with me. "I don't understand," I told him, confused. I came to Steph's cabin hoping to see him. A million thoughts ran in my head about how I would greet him after the kiss. I tried hard not to blush because he would grin like a devil. But never did I imagine, it would be like this. "Of course, because you don't remember." That's all it took for him to break me, a simple and stupid accusation. He was walking out without even looking back after throwing those few sharp words at me, and I started to realise the effect he had on me. I thought he was
AYLA A FEW YEARS AGO Her bedside clock read 11:45 PM. Her mom would never let her use her phone at that time. After sitting in the same position for an hour and a half, she got up slowly. A few times, Evelyn knocked at her door. But she ignored it. The knock came again, making her sigh. After all, it's not Evelyn's fault. She held an ice pack in her hand when Ayla opened the door. "I am sorry for what happened." She told her, handing over the ice pack. "You did nothing," Ayla said, taking the ice pack. "Thank you." She said in her hoarse tone. Then, Evelyn did the most unexpected thing. She took a strand of hair to the back of her ear in a motherly way. "You're a good girl, Ayla. I know that. Eda has raised you well. It's just your dad hated her. And he hates the knights. We had a long rivalry with them, and it made him furious. Otherwise, your dad wouldn't have. .." "He has never been my dad, Evelyn. Do not try to justify what he did. He slapped me because
Her house was situated at the end of the street. She could see the beautiful gardens perched on the lawn of each mansion she has passed by. 'I could do it,' she thought. Just another minute and she will be inside her room, and he can't hurt her, or at least she thought he couldn't. His truck is still after her, following her into the house. Jack just came out of the house looking at her suspiciously. His gaze shifted to Nathaniel who shortly followed her. Nathaniel is taller than Jack but not as tall as Jayden. He has a muscled body and if something happens, Ayla was sure that would happen, she can't outdo him. He looked dangerous, and he got big hands. Something about that terrified her evenmore. She saw him leaning towards Jack and whispering something, and Jack looked at her with spite in his eyes a second later. * An eerie silence settled over the dinner table. Something is off or it's her fear of Na
