I used to be an artist

Jace offers to give me a tour around their house after breakfast. They own a pretty big chunk of land, and most of it is covered by woods. I just wonder why anyone would want to be surrounded by a forest. Maybe it could be the love for nature or the need to be away from the noisy town. It must have cost them a fortune.

"Are your parents the ones who bought this land?" I inquire from Jace who is walking beside me.

"No. I bought it," he replies.

"It must have cost you a pretty sum," I say.

"It did," he says with a small smile. I wonder how much more Jace owns. He must be very wealthy. Where does he get all this money? Perhaps he inherited it from his parents.

"What do you do for a living?" I can't stop myself from asking this time. He looks thoughtful for a moment.

"I used to be an artist," he replies with a coy smile, which is immediately replaced by a thoughtful expression. That is in past tense.

"And then what happened?" I
