Zeke shifted in the woods behind Jared’s house and snarled with frustration. What he wanted... What he needed was on that dick’s property. The scent was so strong here that Shadow was going crazy trying to cross the boundary.
He usually had a tighter grip on his wolf than this, so it occurred to him for a second that maybe he needed to worry. It had taken years of work to get that unstable beast under control.
But that scent... He was with Shadow on this. They had to find it.
So he jogged back to his house and entered through the back doors. Myles and Derek were in the lounge with a group of girls who were definitely not wolves. He ignored their questioning looks when he strode past them naked. He didn’t give a shit that his junk was swinging all over the place in front of strangers. Other wolves wouldn’t have cared, but he felt the girls eyeing him as if he were their next meal.
Derek found him as he was putting a shirt on.
“Are we going somewhere?” he asked.
“Just me.”
He didn’t want to elaborate. The whole situation stunk of hypocrisy, which he was well aware of. Claire had only mentioned the party, and he had been ready to rip her apart. Even now, the thought of going over to Jared’s house was grating on his nerves. Was it worth it? Did he need to enter the enemy’s territory just to find out what that scent was?
‘Yes,’ Shadow said.
Shadow hardly ever talked, not since he had taken control of him. But he didn’t have time to stop and think about that. It didn’t matter anyway since they agreed. They were going to the party.
“Don’t tell me you’re going back to Claire,” Derek said. “You know your father disapproves.”
He frowned at Derek as he put on his tie. Being questioned about his every move was something he wouldn’t miss once he became the Alpha. Somehow, his father always found a way to micro-manage things, even so far away.
“Not that it’s any of your fucking business, but no, I’m not going to see Claire.”
“So why are you getting dressed up?”
Zeke looked at his reflection in the mirror and paused as he made the final knot in his tie. Shit. What the fuck was he doing? This was Jared’s party, and he dressed like he was going on a date. He had no idea why he’d felt the need to do that. There would be no one he’d want to impress at Jared’s house; they were all members of his pack or people they had allied with. Which meant they were all his enemies.
Which meant he would be outnumbered if he went alone. But still...
He pulled the tie off and found a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.
“Zeke, are you okay?”
“Yes. I’m just... I’m hungry.”
He was starving. He wanted whatever was whetting his appetite like this. He wanted to inhale it. Lick it. Bathe in it. He wanted it all over him if he could. The scent had invaded every part of him, almost like the scent of prey on a hunt. He couldn’t stop. His thoughts were all jumbled up as he finally pulled the T-shirt over his head and walked out of his room with Derek close behind.
“Then order something. You don’t need to go out now, not when the vampires—”
“I know what’s out there,” he growled as he rushed down the stairs.
He walked past the lounge entrance, where Myles was already entertaining some of the girls. The scent of lust was heavy in the air, tainting the sweet scent that seemed to have melded onto every cell in his body. The moment he stepped out into fresh air, the scent hit him again. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
Fuck, that was amazing.
When he opened his eyes again and looked toward Jared’s house, he struggled to push Shadow back. Shifting there would be seen as an act of war, and the consequences would be more than he was willing to pay.
“Zeke... Your eyes, man,” Derek said quietly.
He took another deep breath before he looked at his friend. Why did he look so worried? He was known for his control over Shadow. It had been years since...
He looked away from Derek again to start walking down his driveway. All he wanted was to find where this scent was coming from. There would be no trouble tonight.
“Go back to your girls. I’m not staying out too long,” he commanded.
Maybe that made him a dick because Derek had to comply instead of following him. But he wasn’t going to let anyone stop him.
People moved out of his way as he went up Jared’s driveway. They stopped talking as he looked around, trying to find the source. But it wasn’t out here. He followed it into the house and stopped just inside the doorway. The scent was everywhere here. With a frown, he followed it in every room before he came to the kitchen.
The Omegas in the kitchen dropped what they were doing and shrank back. Knives clattered on the surfaces; trays fell to the floor. Zeke didn’t pay them any attention as he looked at the food on offer. He poked a piece of steak that looked like it was cooked to perfection. He had nothing but a few bites of his pastry at lunch, so looking at that meat should have made him want to eat it. None of it smelled like what he wanted, but he was practically drooling standing there. Starved. But not for this food.
He eyed the Omegas one by one, but all he could smell on them was fear.
“What else have you made? What’s that scent? Like vanilla and something fruity,” he demanded.
They didn’t lift their heads to answer him. He wondered if Jared had ordered his Omegas to never interact with him. Scowling at them, he walked around the kitchen island to stand beside them. Shadow was going crazy, in complete agreement with him. They would not be denied.
“Tell me what else you made,” he growled.
The Omega swallowed before she said, “This is everything, sir.”
He didn’t sense a lie. He growled in frustration as he backed off and left the kitchen.
If it wasn’t food in the kitchen, it had to be on one of the guests. He followed the scent to the wide-open back doors, where he could smell Jared and his pack. The patio was full of people being loud and obnoxious and participating in things they knew were not allowed on campus. But Jared was an arrogant asswipe who always flouted the rules. He would fail as an Alpha.
If he lived long enough to become one.
His nose pointed him to a spot somewhere at the loungers by the pool. First, he noticed Jared laughing at something.
And then he noticed her.
A little woman with a massive plate of food on her lap. He couldn’t stop his eyes from glowing as his body filled with the undeniable need to ravish her. He took another deep breath, and the scent almost knocked him off his feet. It was her.
Vanilla. A hint of orange blended so perfectly that his body started to react. And human.
He recoiled back. Human?
And then Shadow said something that didn’t make sense but still filled him with dread.
‘Mine.’
Hi everyone. This one has less steam than my usual books, but it's my favourite. I hope you can give it a chance. Daily updates, two chapters at a time until it is all uploaded. Add it to your library and let me know in the comments what you think x
Ava didn’t feel even a bit self-conscious as she wolfed down the food on her plate. It hit the spot; all the spots. She was sure she moaned as the juicy steak went down her throat. It was better than any steak she had ever eaten. Okay, maybe this guy had the right idea by getting his party catered. She was a convert. She peeked at him from under her cap and found him watching her, tracking her movements. Like the wolf he was. She suddenly remembered where she was as she looked around for a napkin. But there was no point. She was still eating; it was inevitable that it would go all over her face.“I’m sorry. I’ll wipe my face after I finish eating,” she said. The wolf laughed, a hearty sound that brought more attention to her. The party guests hadn’t stopped watching her since this Alpha had brought her out here.“Eat however you want, Red. As you can see, nobody gives a shit around here.”When she looked around, she noticed that even though the others kept looking at her, they were al
Ava looked around to see if anyone else was around before she looked at the angry man in front of her. Jared’s car was long gone; there would be no one to hear her screams. She should have asked Jared to wait until she was inside. She should have remembered what always happened when she was cornered alone. Challenging a wolf in unfamiliar territory was a bad idea. She looked down as her brothers had always taught her to do. With her cap on, she couldn’t see him at all. This man was clearly an Alpha; there was no mistaking the aura of danger surrounding him. Her heart hammered in her chest even though she tried to calm it. Fear always made Alphas crazier, like it was an aphrodisiac. “Did you hear me?” he growled. “Yes,” she answered quickly. The door to her dorm was right behind him, but she knew nothing would prevent a determined werewolf from ripping it off its hinges, even if she managed to escape. She couldn’t run from a wolf.“Phoenix Academy is no place for humans. Don’t unp
Of all the things that could have happened to fuck up his final year and his life, his wolf snarling that the human was theirs was the last thing he had expected. What the fuck?Zeke paced back and forth in his bedroom, his shoulders tense, fists clenched, and eyes glowing on and off as he tried to tame his beast.True mates were practically unheard of. There hadn’t been any reported in his father’s time or his grandfather’s. And when those rare meetings had happened, it was never to a fucking human! How the hell would that work? They broke so easily! He would be the Alpha of the biggest, strongest pack in all of America. His arranged mate came from the second biggest pack and had been carefully vetted. The Luna of his pack had to be strong enough to hold everything together. Not a human. Not something so fragile.Fuck! He could have punched something, but he knew Shadow would grab his chance to take control the moment he let his emotions take over. The beast was fighting to go and
Ava woke up with a start for the second time in a few short hours. The contents of the welcome pack were strewn all over her bed, and a piece of pie was stuck to the front of her T-shirt. She felt something on her face that felt like it was probably another piece of the pie. Last night’s events flooded her mind, and she shot off the bed. Daylight was streaming into the room through the gauzy curtains, which meant only one thing. She was freaking late! And her schedule said she had a mandatory assembly before orientation. She’d fallen asleep while trying to learn the millions of rules this place had. She hadn’t even made the bed or taken her alarm clock out of her suitcase. And because of that unhinged Alpha, she had dreamt of being carried out of this place in a body bag. It had made a change from her usual nightmares, but it was still unsettling.Still, she had to wait until after assembly and orientation before she could see the dean anyway. That Alpha couldn’t have meant she shoul
Ava looked away from the angry Alpha as Jared stopped at the seats on the opposite side of the aisle. Her heart beat so loudly that she knew everyone here could hear it. The Alpha’s words floated through her head again. They would smell her fear. They would tear her apart. Jared inclined his head, and one of the people quickly stood to move away. She had been ready to let go of Jared and find an empty seat for herself, but Jared still held onto her hand. It took her a moment to realise he was making the other guy give up his seat, too. She would have felt mortified when the guy stood and walked to the back of the hall, but she was ready to sit down. Her whole body had started trembling so much again that she didn’t think her legs would hold her. “After you,” Jared smiled. She sat quickly and looked down. It was so quiet in the room she would have heard a pin drop, and Jared was grinning like an idiot as he sat next to her. Maybe all the Alphas here were crazy. “If you are quite re
Her scent was every-fucking-where. It was up his nostrils and clinging to his clothes and skin. “Calm down, Zeke.”Calm down? Calm down?! How the fuck was he supposed to calm down when a human was calling to him like she was a siren? He had sensed her presence and smelled her long before she appeared on that bastard’s arm. She had been touching him! And she had let him touch her! The moment Jared had put his hand on her knee, he had been seconds from ripping that arm off. Ripping it off and then stuffing it so deep up that stupid dick’s ass before ripping his head off.Shadow snarled again, doing everything he could to escape his control. He continued pacing up and down the path behind the kitchens, clenching and unclenching his fists. Last night, she’d had that ridiculous cap covering most of her face and her boyish clothes covering her body, but now he could see her so clearly. When she had walked in, he’d felt like he’d been sucker-punched. She was so small, barely reached his c
Jared had led her through hallways that were a mix of old and modern architecture. He was walking so fast that she had to half-jog to keep up while also remembering not to make eye contact with anyone in case they turned out to be psycho wolves. It would have been funny if she still wasn’t trying to calm herself. This Academy had all the species, but it seemed it was still the wolves she would have to watch out for. Jared took her up a wide staircase to the second floor, where she saw doors labelled for the directors and associates of the different faculties. Then, finally, he stopped at a door that said ‘Dean Alexander Russell’.“I’m going to have to leave you here,” Jared said when she finally caught up. “I don’t think Alpha Russell wants to see my face right now.”He didn’t seem as happy as he had been when they had made that stupid entrance. If it weren’t for the fact that she would probably be leaving, she would have asked what the deal was with the evaluations that had made him
The First Year block seemed miles away. By the time Ava went through the wide doors, she was sweating and sure her eyes were red from holding back her tears. She hadn’t bumped into anyone, so she realised everyone else really followed the tardiness rule. She hoped they would follow the other rules—no fighting, respect for others, etc. The front of the building had several offices, which she assumed were the administration, but she couldn’t see anyone to direct her. She eventually found a map on the papers stuck on the notice board near the door and made her way to the room she was supposed to have gone to straight after the assembly. The welcome pack hadn’t included the academy prospectus, which she had thought was odd, but it said they would enrol in their classes during orientation. She hoped the spots weren’t limited. If she was going to get stuck here for a while longer, she at least wanted to make a start on the Business degree she would have done at a human college. She planne
Ava stayed in the bleachers for all the matches for the beginners to complete. She was just being a coward. Between his matches, Zeke had paced up and down the whole arena, and every time he stopped at the beginners’ section, his eyes burned through her. She’d kept her eyes down even though she was obviously frustrating him. If other people hadn’t heard the rumours about them by now, she was sure his behaviour had made them aware. He was scaring the shit out of everyone. But it was okay. She wasn’t going to be at the arena much longer. She’d won some matches already but would tap out on the next one to avoid winning a spot in the top ten. This day wouldn’t end like the last one.Predictably, the coach called her name first. She ignored Zeke as she went to pick a weapon and chose a very small chain. It could still be deadly in the right hands, but she didn’t want anything that would intimidate her opponent. They’d all been wary of her already during the earlier matches. She hoped t
Zeke stood near the bleachers in his section, his eyes trained on Ava. She looked fearsome with that deadly weapon in her hand and her face devoid of emotion as she waited to cut her opponent down.He would have been very impressed if he hadn’t been so angry with her. Ava looked very confident with weapons in her hands. But as it stood, he wanted to fucking throttle her.Gideon told him that the vampire yielding had not been his doing. The prince claimed to have been just as surprised as everyone else. And, of course, he couldn’t rip that vampire apart because he had taken himself straight to Isolation the moment he had yielded. He would not be able to interrogate him until the end of the day.He still had the vial of Gideon’s blood in his bag, so Ava had not taken that before her last match; she’d had something else. She could have died last night! Who had given it to her? Who did he need to rip apart with his bare hands? She was keeping too many secrets; he and Shadow didn’t like it
Ava slept in her own room and silently made her way downstairs before Zeke woke up. The Omegas were the only ones awake when she went into the kitchen to grab a piece of fruit. She would have breakfast in the dining hall before going to the arena for the second day.The Omegas were just standing around, and the moment she walked in, they tensed and looked down.“What are you doing?” she asked with a frown, keeping her voice to a whisper so she wouldn’t wake anyone up. And why were they lowering their eyes?“Alpha Ezekiel keeps ordering us not to cook, but we have to. We don’t know what we should do,” one of the Omegas said. Samantha, if she remembered correctly. This Omega was usually the one bold enough to answer Ezekiel.“I would do what he says. Prepare your own food and then go to train and get ready for today, or whatever. I won’t say anything,” she said, reaching for a banana. She ate it quickly before grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge and putting it in her bag. The p
The infirmary. Ava had missed it. As she slowly blinked the sleep out of her eyes, she heard the beeping of the machines and realised she was hooked up to some IVs. The curtains were drawn around her bed, so she knew she wasn’t in a private room this time. She could hear faint moaning from one side of her. It made her wonder what had happened to that poor student for them to be in that much pain because all the students healed quickly, and the Infirmary had their fancy potions to help them. She gingerly lifted herself onto her elbows and looked around, trying to judge the time. The dim lights were on, so it was nighttime, but whether it was still the same day was up for debate. She hoped so. This would be a brilliant time to be unconscious for days so she wouldn’t have to participate in the rest of the evaluation. There was a slight commotion somewhere in the ward, and a female voice saying, “We told you to come back during visiting hours. There are too many patients tonight; you can
“Can we even do that? Can we yield?” Ava asked again as she paced Zeke’s dressing room floor. Her anxiety levels were through the roof, and she didn’t think even Zeke could get her out of this. What the hell was happening today? She'd expected her day to be over by now. She’d expected to be recovering in the infirmary by now or Zeke’s bed, where she usually woke up after something like this. But here she was, about to fight expert fighters—Zeke’s equals who were probably as ruthless as he was.“It’s against the rules. You invalidate all your progress for the term and get a day in Isolation,” Zeke said quietly. She whirled around to face him, horror filling every part of her. Even Jared warned her about Isolation and how it broke someone. Zeke seemed to have come out unscathed, but she knew how much pain he had been in. How could someone like her survive that? And why would anyone do that to themselves on purpose?“Is that vampire crazy? Does he have a history of doing such messed up
The moment it sunk in that she won, she was in Zeke’s fancy dressing room, and her three housemates were looking at her as if she had grown another head. She sat stiffly on a sofa, looking at them as that thought kept going round and round in her head. She won.She beat Douche Dexter. And then something else occurred to her. She was going to have to fight again. She was going to have to fight a student at the advanced level.“What the hell have I just done?” she whispered.Zeke, Derek and Myles looked at each other and then back at her. Goddess knew what they were mind-linking each other, but they all probably also realised she had just screwed herself. There was no way she could fight anyone more advanced than Dexter. That was a death sentence!“How did you do that?” Derek asked.“I don’t know,” she answered, rubbing her temples. “I just got angry, he’s always an asshole... What have I done?” As the adrenaline had worn off, she had expected the pain from his blow to return, but the
Ava walked straight into the ring, and everyone in the arena started to quieten down. She told herself to breathe. This match would be her real test after fighting the beginners, so she had to let all her fear drain away as she had been taught to do. She told herself she didn’t need that vampire’s blood; she could fight under her own steam. In the silence of the arena, with all the students and faculty looking on, she concentrated on counting her breaths so she wouldn’t have an anxiety attack. To be more effective, she had to do what she told Robert that morning. She had to pretend no one else was in this room except her opponent, whoever that would be.As she waited, she started her stretches. She was lucky that she was flexible, but sometimes fear made her body freeze up. That couldn’t happen today. She had no idea how much longer she would be in this school, so she could have just lost all her matches earlier and avoided all of this. But she had her pride. She could admit that. A
Ava hadn’t managed to eat anything, and Zeke sat in the dining hall opposite her, not even pretending to eat. He sat so still as he watched her that she wondered what scheme he was hatching in his head. Would it get him sent to Isolation again? Or much worse?Zeke’s gaze only shifted from her when his body tensed, and he looked at the entrance. Moments later, a group of students entered the dining hall. She recognised a few of them as the vampires who had visited Zeke last night. The whole dining hall quietened down as they stopped to look around. Since vampires didn’t eat solid food, she had never seen any in the dining hall before, and those, in particular, she would have remembered. Like last night, she was struck by how powerful their allure was. Not as strong as the dean’s secretary or the Councillor, but such strength was rare in people so young. Wolves and vampires were natural enemies, even if the Council forced everyone to co-exist. She hadn’t imagined they would willingly i
Ava wasn’t surprised when she heard Coach Baxter’s booming voice calling her name. She met his gaze and saw the cruel smile on the man’s lips. He would enjoy every hit she took as if he was delivering it himself. She stood slowly and lowered her gaze. It was one thing to antagonise the coach during training, but there was an entirely different atmosphere in the arena and hundreds of people watching. She couldn’t openly break the rules. She felt hundreds of pairs of eyes on her as she walked into the wrestling ring and stood in one corner. Silence descended in the arena. She was sure the only sound they could hear was her loud heartbeat. Were they all waiting to watch her get her butt kicked? The whole school had to know by now how many times that had happened in training. Would it be the same now?She risked looking up and then had to look down again. The coach hadn’t announced her opponent and seemed to be enjoying making a spectacle out of her. The other levels hadn’t started yet;
