I wandered aimlessly through the mall, my mind consumed by the things Selene said.

What was I doing here, anyway? I'd forgotten the reason I came back to the mall in the first place.

As I walked, my thoughts swirled around Amelia.

Was Selene just trying to make me stay away from Amelia or was she telling the truth?

Was that why Amelia asked about my dealings?

My stomach twisted into knots as I recalled my confession to Amelia about my tax evasion.

Stupid mistake. I shouldn't have trusted her with that secret. But Amelia loved me, didn't she? She'd said those words and looked into my eyes with conviction.

Or was it all a lie?

My fist clenched as I strode out of the mall and into the sunlight. I reached my car, yanked open the door, and slid into the driver's seat.

I started the engine, and my mind raced. No, Amelia wouldn't betray me like that.

What if it's her way of paying me back for hurting her?
