"Mom!" I screamed, my voice lost in the chaos. "Excuse me, excuse me!" I pushed forward, my eyes fixed on the stretcher as it was loaded into the ambulance.

I had to get to her. I had to know if she was lying on that stretcher. The crowd seemed to close in around me, a sea of faces blurring together as I struggled to break through.

I elbowed my way past a bystander, my heart racing with every step. The officer's grip on my arm tightened, but I shook him off.

"MOM!!" I screamed again, my voice raw and desperate.

The paramedics slammed the ambulance doors shut, and I lunged forward, my hands slapping against the metal.

I was too late. They were taking her away from me, and I didn't even know if she was alive.

I spun around, my eyes locking onto the officer's face. "Tell me if it's her!" I demanded, "Please, you have to tell me!"

"Sir, I need you to step back and let us do our job." The officer said.
