Vlad quietly did what he could to try and make it more comfortable for Vanora. The angels were only good for one other thing besides being food. Nothing could beat the soft and silky texture of their feathers. He mercilessly harvested the feathers at top speed and gathered them beside Vanora. He then took off his blazer and shirt to lay them over the feathers, so that the bloodied ones would not dirty Vanora further. Without checking with her nor asking her, he gently picked her up then laid her down on the makeshift bed.
Vanora was still awake but she did not feel like responding. She felt completely drained inside and out, yet restless at the same time. It was a torture to be in the limbo like this. She very subtly rubbed her fingertips against Vlad's blazer, trying to focus on how it felt and empty her mind of everything else. Otherwise, she would not be able to fall asleep. However, it was a lot harder than normal. This was what she feared about being honest with her feelings.
[Vanora... You're really not as bad as you think you are...] BaoBao could no longer take it, so he tried to help. [You're stronger and better than you think you are. See? You smoothly dealt with the angels that the others struggled with.]
/I know it's supposed to help me feel better but it feels kind of pathetic that I have to compare myself to lesser hell beings to feel better./
[Lesser hell beings?]
/It's just a term I came up with for them. Don't you think they're far more basic than the other hell beings we've met in the underground cave? That's probably why they struggled so much with the angels./
[Ah... But, but, you do have something the original soul did not have! Your hellfire! You're not back at square one!]
As she was sleeping in a fetal position, she easily hid her face under her good arm and smiled faintly. /Thanks for the reminder, BaoBao. I can only hope the hellfire really helps.../
After a short silence, Vanora spoke again. /BaoBao, do you know what would really help me?/
BaoBao perked up upon hearing Vanora's question. [What? What can I do?]
/Please don't think you're of no help. Please don't feel bad because of me. That itself would be a big help./
There was another pause as BaoBao did not know how to answer. He did not know how to describe what he felt. He only knew it was complicated. Not exactly bad, but not entirely good either. He wanted to help but found that this was a weird way to help her. Nonetheless, he had no other idea on how he could help her. [Mm!]
/That's my reliable BaoBao./
By the time Vanora suppressed her thoughts and emotions enough for her to sleep, half the night had passed.
Vlad had taken Vanora's spot by the tree with his back against it. An arm rested on a bent leg while the other was stretched out. He rested his head against the trunk without taking his eyes off of Vanora. It was obvious to him when she was still awake. He had checked in with her emotions again and found it a little different this time. The colours were still intense, but it reflected less rage and more despair. An ache grew in his heart, which made him frown. He could not understand his feelings. He did not know why he felt this way either. However, there was one desire that burned within him. /Will you ever let me share your burden?/
When she finally fell asleep, he smiled but it did not reach his eyes. His heart still felt heavy. He had been monitoring her emotions the whole time, so he found out that she only fell asleep after her aura dimmed. He leaned forward and wanted to caress her cheek with the back of his four fingers, but his hand hovered above her face. Not wanting to wake her up after she fell asleep with much difficulty, he very gently brushed her hair out of her face instead, then looked at her arm that was already halfway done growing back. He took a deep breath then grabbed the hem of her shirt as usual before going to sleep.
When Vanora woke up the next morning, her arm had completely grown back. It worked perfectly fine as well. BaoBao diligently reported how long she slept.
/Another 8 hours huh... It's amazing how we could sleep for 8 hours this peacefully. Isn't there a holy war going on?/
She sluggishly sat up and finally realised that Vlad was nowhere around her.
[He's above. He's been awake and up there since the wee hours of the morning. He didn't get much rest.]
She looked up and found him sitting on the branch with a leg up. His posture looked slack, but his gaze was sharp and alert, like he was studying something far in the distance. Seeing him shirtless in broad daylight highlighted his well defined muscles. The state he was in, coupled with his serious expression and devilishly good looks, enraptured even someone like Vanora. Unbeknownst to Vanora, BaoBao had done his fair share of ogling while she was still asleep. Suddenly, Vlad looked down as if he felt her stare and their eyes met.
Vanora immediately looked away and could not stop the heat that was creeping up her face. /I guess that explains how I could sleep so soundly./
He jumped down and squatted to look squarely at her, giving her no chance to hide her face.
/She looks a little better than yesterday./ "Ready to eat?" He asked with a warm smile.
"Mm... I don't really have an appetite..." She admitted after thinking for awhile. "So let's just go." /I've wasted too much time sleeping anyway./
"But you didn't eat yesterday either." He gently persuaded.
As if on cue, the group of self-declared followers announced their arrival by presenting their catch for the day. "Boss! We've caught all the animals you asked for!"
"Take your pick. Anything whets your appetite?" Vlad continued to speak to Vanora without acknowledging the ghoul that spoke.
Vanora glanced across the crowd and noted the variety of fowls and venison. Nothing interested her, but she knew that even if she did not need to eat, the others may need to, and they could only move on after eating. /Is it really good to travel with them...? I need all the time I can get./
Seeing no response from her, Vlad proactively picked out a mixture of fowls and venison then began cooking it himself. Everyone stared at him weirdly while they dug into their catch as it is.
It did not take long to cook only the surface of the meat. Vlad presented to Vanora the different meat one by one. "At least eat a little before we go. We don't have to follow their pace if you don't want to."
Vanora stared at the meat, then nodded. However she took no more than a few bites of each then returned it to Vlad.
"Is it the taste?" Vlad smiled wryly.
Vanora understood what he was referring to. These tasted nowhere near as good as the usual meals he had provided her with. In fact, it tasted the same as her first meal since becoming a demon. "No. I just don't have an appetite."
"You really want to leave now, don't you?"
Vanora nodded.
He sighed helplessly and gave in. He ordered the rest to head west after they were done eating. "Group up with the others that also strayed from the main battle area. Prepare for a big battle in the near future."
He then turned to Vanora and his tone turned a lot gentler, "Let's go." He extended a hand out.
Vanora handed his shirt to him instead, then got up without his help. "Thanks, but I really don't need that bed next time."
Vlad was just done putting his arms through the sleeves. He raised his eyebrows then grinned. He pushed the front of his shirt aside while putting his hands on his hips. "What, are you affected by this?" He teased and cocked his head slightly.
Vanora frowned then took off first. Catching how red her ears were before she escaped, his heart fluttered and he could not stop grinning. He quickly grabbed his blazer, then caught up with her in no time.
At the back of her mind, Vanora wondered why Vlad chose to progress Westward instead of heading deeper into the forest. As the days passed, she got a hunch of his motive.
Like the previous day, they encountered and won several small fights. Their pool of minions also grew each time. She even met another warrior angel for her final fight for the day. The angel used a hammer that could shrink and grow in size as and when the angel desired. Despite her increased caution and experience, she could not escape unscathed. This time, her suffered from shattered bones. This confirmed her suspicion that there was a different class of angels that was adapted to fighting.
Feeling drained, Vanora retired without washing up again. Although it was only the second day, Vanora was almost dressed in dried up blood. Vlad frowned with displeasure. He worried about the little regard she held for her well-being. Keeping his worries to himself, he created another pile of feathers. However, it was only large enough for him to make a pillow. While Vanora tried to go to sleep, Vlad silently and gently used his shirt to clean her face, but it was ineffective. He sighed inwardly as he watched her struggle to go to sleep again.
In the subsequent days, Vlad led everyone SouthWest. Similar fights took place. Everyday, more warrior angels died, more minions joined their following, and Vanora got dirtier and smellier. Her appetite did not recover. Instead, she grew increasingly listless and battle-crazed. She moved with only one intention on her mind. /Kill them all./
Finally, Vanora met an opponent that made her hesitate. The angel held one long sword in each hand. He eyed Vanora warily. His guard was up. There was no opening at all. Somehow, she knew that this angel would be difficult. However, that was the end of her hesitation. Words echoed in her mind like there was another voice inside her, telling her the answers to a test. /Bait. Strike back. Straightforward./
In that short moment, the angel had asked Vanora, "What's a demon like you doing here?" When he saw no change in Vanora's blank expression, he got the impression that she did not hear him. He intuitively tightened his grip on his swords, just in time to move the moment Vanora did.
/They must be reinforcements! They're trying to flank us!/
The angel bravely faced her attack directly. He swung his swords like he was dancing, but each swing was actually lethal. Vanora dodged every swing but not without some injuries. He easily kept her on the defensive, giving her no chance to attack. As he expected, she eventually turned to run away.
He knew that there was another demon lying in wait nearby, but he did not care about it. That demon did not seem interested in helping, which the angel found unsurprising. One of the hell beings' major weakness was their poor coordination and teamwork, especially when they were of different kinds. Nonetheless, he aimed to keep this fight with Vanora as short as possible to reserve his energy to deal with the next one. /It was with much difficulty that we managed to purge this much of the land of their evil! I shall not let some reinforcement upset it all!/
He bore down on Vanora and raised his sword, ready to decapitate her from behind. Just then, Vanora rebounded off the tree she had been running towards to shoot straight back at the angel.
/I'll die!/ The angel widened in fear as Vanora got within a feet of him.
/No! I can't!/ As long as he was alive, he will fight. It was all or nothing now. He roared and swung his swords at a speed that he had never reached before.
To the angel's horror, Vanora did not dodge like he had expected her to. His slashes had covered every path she could take, but it was the weakest in the path that she chose, which was to fearlessly continue heading towards him. Her flesh got cut up. Some chunks flew off. Some hung off like an open flap. Her right hand was like a claw going straight for his heart. He jammed his swords straight towards her. It was a final, straightforward, and desperate attempt to at least take her down with him. Vanora let herself be stabbed. One went through her chest. The other went through her right arm. In return, she grabbed onto his arms. Before anyone could blink, his arms got tossed to the floor. His cry of pain filled the air. Before he could fly away, Vanora caught the bottom of his robes, then flung him to the ground. The impact broke several bones. The initial pain and shock momentarily paralyzed him. He helplessly watched Vanora comfortably land in front of him.
The next day, Vlad led everyone to flank the army of angels fighting in the main battlefield. Now that Vanora regained her sanity, he trusted her to cooperate and survive on the main battlefield. The element of surprise gave the hell beings a temporary advantage. Everyone, except Vlad, went all out. Amidst the huge fierce battle going on all around him, Vlad focused more on ensuring that Vanora was always fighting with no more than three warrior angels at once. Whenever she fought against the stronger ones, he occupied any other being that wanted to interfere, no matter if they were angel or not. The pair's teamwork was almost impeccable, but Vanora knew that the credit belonged to Vlad. Eventually, the land lost to the angels got reclaimed. Nature withered and died, humans turned more and more bitter, and the land was devastated. The hell beings continued to advance. Everyday, Vlad made sure that Vanora ate a full meal before he teleported them to the surface. When
Vlad teleported himself away, but he did not escape unscathed. His clothes were in tatters. Deep wounds littered his body. However, he stayed among the treetop and looked down at Michael with a smirk, looking completely unbothered by his state. It was as if the battle was already concluded with him being announced as the victor. Michael used his sword as support and pushed himself off the ground very slowly. He was clearly drained of strength. Although he looked up at where Vlad was, there was a glazed over look in his eyes, like he was only half conscious. "Humph. You're still not dead." Vlad sounded a tad bit impressed. "You're either the strongest or one of the strongest already. Then let's see how you survive this!" Vlad multiplied himself again then had all his copies bear down on Michael at the same time. Despite his spacey look, Michael squeezed the handle of his sword just before the first attack could land. The same rugged light streaks shot up
"Hold up, are you really Lord Vlad? What's with the way you're behaving? You're creeping me out." Raven said with a slightly disturbed look on her face. He frowned and looked at her sharply. "Got a problem?" Raven relaxed now that he was speaking in the familiar ice cold tone. "I wouldn't have one if you gave me your title of demon lord as well. Why would I only want your duties?" "You can have it for all I care." He said dismissively, then turned his attention back on Vanora. "You'd have to die." She raised an eyebrow as she stated the obvious. "Feel free to try." He casually remarked while placing his arm around Vanora's shoulders, but he found his arm going through air instead. Vanora had disappeared from her spot, faster than anyone could blink. He turned around and found Raven entangled with Vanora a safe distance away from him. Anger bubbled up inside him. The whites of his eyes to turned black. She dared to insult him by stealing his gi
The fog took a much longer time before it cleared up. Vanora inferred that the castle must be quite a distance away from the inn.Once it cleared up, the first thing Vanora noticed was not how ridiculously large and spacious the room was, but how there were piles and piles of black paper scattered around the room. Some were even as tall as her. When she looked down, she found out that they were even standing on some important looking documents. The gold rim and letterings were the only thing that made it stand out against the black floor."Bloody hell. Didn't Raven say that she took over my duties? How's it such a mess? I don't think two months worth of work is even this much." He frowned, perplexed by the situation of his study."She probably did a bad job for you in vengeance." Vanora explained offhandedly. It definitely sounded like something Raven would do based on what Raven said to Vlad earlier. He looked at her with surprise. "You think so?"
At the end of the day, Vlad and Vanora returned to the castle instead of the inn. Vlad knew that Vanora preferred to not waste time on teleporting between three areas. Besides, the table in the study was large enough for them to eat at, without needing to move anything aside.“Vlad… Can you keep your distance whenever we’re in front of others?”“Why?”“I don’t want trouble.”“No one would dare.”“Of course, YOU won’t be troubled.”“You won’t be either, if you’re associated with me.”“Trouble will find me BECAUSE I&rs
After a short contemplation, the well-respected being finally spoke. "It's still too early to judge anything. We don't know what caused its behaviour. If it's related to its host, we would only be sending another system to its demise. If there are more signs that indicate going towards a negative ending, it'll never be too late to end BaoBao. Give it a system upgrade now, but quarantine its connections. The only ones it should be able to contact is us." No one argued and everyone returned to work. Some continued operations as per normal. Others attended to BaoBao's situation. This was how they were. No fuss, efficient, and effective. When they were done, they reported BaoBao's vitality signs and current condition to the one who gave the command. "How quickly it recovers now is up to it. Its host should be able to tide over by herself in the meantime. Our systems wouldn't keep themselves bounded with weak hosts." /BaoBao! BaoBao! What's wrong?! Where are y
Amidst the silence of the night and the snores, the soft rustle of leaves and grass could be heard here and there. Finally, some ghouls that should have been on patrol appeared and stood around Vanora. They looked at Vanora with a glazed over look in their eyes./Take her away from Lord Vlad. Place her in someone else’s arms./The order echoed repeatedly in their mind. They moved as one and pulled Vanora away from Vlad. They pulled, and pulled, and pulled, but Vanora was stuck as if she was rooted to the ground. Being mindless creatures at the moment, they did not stop to consider why, nor did they notice the black mark appear on the back of Vlad’s hand.Vlad’s eyes flew open. The sight of ghouls still pulling onto Vanora put him in a blind rage. A burst of power exploded from him and decayed everything around him, including any beings that happened to be sleeping close enough to him. Only Vanora, who was still unconscious and no
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
