To the angel's horror, Vanora did not dodge like he had expected her to. His slashes had covered every path she could take, but it was the weakest in the path that she chose, which was to fearlessly continue heading towards him.
Her flesh got cut up. Some chunks flew off. Some hung off like an open flap. Her right hand was like a claw going straight for his heart.
He jammed his swords straight towards her. It was a final, straightforward, and desperate attempt to at least take her down with him.
Vanora let herself be stabbed. One went through her chest. The other went through her right arm. In return, she grabbed onto his arms. Before anyone could blink, his arms got tossed to the floor. His cry of pain filled the air. Before he could fly away, Vanora caught the bottom of his robes, then flung him to the ground. The impact broke several bones. The initial pain and shock momentarily paralyzed him. He helplessly watched Vanora comfortably land in front of him. Now that he could study her more closely, the blood stains covering her from head to toe looked old.
"How many of us have you killed already...?" He croaked out his question with much difficulty.
Vanora peered at him, then down at herself. She tilted her face up to stare at the expansive orange sky, closed her eyes, then took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes again, her pupils became mere slits and the golden specks in her eyes glowed. She felt alive and renewed. She looked back down at the angel with mirth, then licked her lips where a little blood had splattered onto her face. It tasted deliciously familiar to her. "I wonder." She finally replied his question.
Her crazed look and the orange sky behind her was the perfect demonic picture that instilled fear into his heart. She pulled the swords out of her body in an agonisingly slow speed. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion to him. He stared at her hand nearing him, like it was the claw of death itself. He trembled uncontrollably like a leaf in the wind. Her hand froze just before she touched him. His eyes slowly travelled up to her face and he found her looking towards the South. He caught the tiny smirk she had on her face before she stood back up.
Knowing that was where the main battlefield was, he guessed her intention. /No. No, no, no, no. Not her. This one's crazy. She can't go./
"You're insane!" He yelled. "You'll only die if you go there!"
Again, she reacted in an unexpected way. Her smile grew so wide as if he had said something extremely pleasing to her. "Well, wouldn't you love that. Actually, that isn't such a bad idea. Someone like me deserves to die, right? I should just die, right?"
Then, she suddenly started pouting. "But I can't. I'm supposed to get stronger. I have to get stronger." She sighed dramatically. "Hey, tell me, if I can't get stronger, does it matter if I'm killed now or later? It doesn't, right? So, I might as well go there and try my luck, right? If I do get stronger from that, I'll surely survive anything after that!" Vanora beamed and skipped like a child who just solved a very difficult question. "Looks like it all worked out in the end!"
The angel knew at this moment that there was only one way to stop her. He had to kill her. Reason clearly did not work on her. Ignoring the pain he was in and his fear, he flapped his wings and used his legs to fight. Because she ignored him to head to the main fight, he managed to catch her in a deadlock, but this only annoyed her. Her power increased along with her annoyance. Her nails punctured his flesh as her grip on him tightened. When she stretched her limbs further, she easily tore him into half. More blood splattered onto Vanora. This time, she licked a generous portion of it off her lips and hands. "Mmm...!" It tasted so good that it instantly improved her ruined mood and increased her desire for more.
Just as she turned to take off, Vlad appeared in front of her, blocking her from advancing forward. Her mood immediately turned sour again.
Vlad was thoroughly upset. Vanora fought recklessly and without a care for herself. What had looked demonic to the angel only looked like seduction and flirtation to Vlad. Despite all the provocations, he faithfully stood by the side without intervening. Yet here she was, making another reckless decision, one that he could not accept.
"You're injured. It's time to rest." Vlad said in a stern voice.
However, Vanora also refused to back off. "What injuries?"
Vlad glanced at her body that was previously littered with gaping wounds. Flesh grew back with every second that passed. /So she can recover this quickly now. That means she won against an angel with the power to suppress our regenerative ability./ As good as this news was, Vlad continued to frown deeply. /But at what cost?/ He looked into her eyes and felt that her gaze was completely foreign. "You're not ready for the main battlefield. If you go there now, you're wishing for death, not growth."
Vanora continued to stare at him in defiance. She did not want to waste her breath on him.
Her stubborn gaze told Vlad that she would not budge. He gritted his teeth in annoyance. /Fuck it. I'm done with listening to you like some faithful dog only to watch you do something so self-destructive./
Suddenly, Vanora ran past him. Vlad rolled his eyes and sighed, then turned around to glare at her. Her body instantly froze. He took his time to walk to her, then placed himself in front of her again. Her eyes glowed brightly, revealing her rage and frustration. Witnessing how feral she looked and behaved at the moment, he shook his head slowly. /She's definitely losing her rationality./
"I didn't expect that I'd have to use this against you. I'm sorry." He lightly stroked her cheek with the back of his four fingers while he teleported them back to the room in the inn.
"Go take a nice hot bath now. After you're done, you WILL eat the food that's on the table." Vlad instructed in a commanding tone.
Vanora felt her body comply even though her mind was unwilling to.
As soon as Vanora washed off all the blood that was on her body, her mind calmed down and she zoned out.
[Va... Vanora?] BaoBao's voice sounded a little shaky. [Vanora...?]
/Hm? BaoBao?/
[Vanora! You're baaaack!] She could hear from BaoBao's shaky voice that he was crying uncontrollably.
/What's wrong, BaoBao?/
[I don't know why, but over the days you responded to me more and more slowly! Today, was the worst, I tell you! The worst! I wanted to remind you that it was truly too early to enter the battlefield since I have been charting your growth and comparing it with your opponents, but you did not respond to me at all! I called you so many times! I was so scared! I didn't know what to do!]
/You did?/
[Of course!] BaoBao wailed indignantly.
Vanora recollected whatever happened earlier and realised to her horror how she had almost went out of control. She also remembered hearing a small voice, but treating it like an annoying bug. /Oh my god./ Her mood spiraled downwards once more and she felt extremely embarrassed. /I'm so, so, so sorry BaoBao. I'll be more careful from now on./
[Please do...!] BaoBao gave a tearful reply.
Since Vanora was still under the influence of Vlad's orders, she could not stay in the bath for too long. Although she was going along with Vlad's order, she could feel a tiny difference in the way she moved. It felt equivalent to moving on auto-pilot.
When she returned to the room, she was greeted with a table full of food. Plates covered every inch of the table. Each plate was filled to the brim with top quality venison dishes. The smell of the dishes caused her hunger to kick in again and she jumped at the food, then mindlessly stuffed her mouth with food without bothering to sit down. Vlad had to physically sit her down. All the while, she continued to eat.
Only after she almost consumed all of the food on the table, was her hunger satisfied. Her senses returned to her once more and she stared blankly at the giant half eaten elk's thigh in her hand. Her mood plunged way back down again. /This is really my punishment... I'm behaving so unsightly and eating without restraint like some wild animal.../
[Well... You didn't look THAT unsightly... You just ate so fast that anyone could tell you've been starving for days.]
/I've really made a big mistake this time.../ She absentmindedly lowered the thigh onto her plate. /I lost the battle against myself and let my emotions get the better of me. I allowed it to cloud my judgement too... I really deserve this humiliation./
He had fully intended to berate her for her carelessness, but those feelings completely vanished upon seeing her looking so embarrassed and humiliated. "Feeling better now?" Vlad sounded extremely soft and gentle.
Vanora nodded.
"Looks like you're back to normal." Vlad teased her lightly.
Seeing her still looking down and out while eating the rest of her food made him feel sorry for her. She likely did not have an easy time. He also felt that he had at least some blame for her current state. If he had not pissed her off at the start, perhaps things would have progressed differently.
He rested his chin on his palm. "You may have lost a little bit of control but it's not all that bad, is it? I hope this brief period of insanity has helped you learn something?"
Vanora nodded, but her mood still did not improve. Vlad frowned as he inferred that she misunderstood his question as berating her for her carelessness.
"What I'm asking is, are you now familiar with the potential of your powers?"
She looked into his eyes in surprise. /The potential of my powers?/
"Don't be afraid to think back to how you were for the past week and re-experience it." He hinted.
She looked back down at her food to consider what Vlad said. After awhile, she closed her eyes as she attempted to re-experience the previous days. Now that she recalled everything in a calmer state, she understood what he meant. She was now familiar with how it felt to use her enhanced instinct. It was quite contrary to her usual way of fighting, which was to calculate every move she made. She simply acted on what she felt was right. There was hardly any thinking involved.
She opened her eyes and fell deep into thought, while her mouth and hand continued to move by themselves, putting food into her mouth each time it was empty. /I may be getting the hang of controlling and mastering my enhanced instinct but... My control over my emotions is still a problem. I still can't feel and not feel whenever I want./ This strongly reminded her of why she had chosen to suppress everything from the beginning.
Vlad studied her expression closely. So, he could tell that there was still something troubling her. "Would you like to share what's troubling you right now? Maybe I could give you some advice."
"Nothing's troubling me." Vanora lied through her teeth.
Vlad silently stared at her for a while. "I see. Then let me just put this out there. I'll be making sure that you show yourself basic care, whether you like it or not. This includes you eating, bathing, and sleeping properly. Humph, I can't have you seducing and flirting with every man out there in front of me." He looked genuinely disgruntled.
His ending comment caught her off guard, causing her to reveal an uninhibited look of surprise, then confusion. "Wh-"
"Don't you dare say that you don't know what I'm talking about. Licking your lips that way, smiling so unreservedly, and talking so freely with some angel you just met. You've never done any of those with me before." He pouted.
She did not know how to defend herself other than clarifying her intentions. "You know that I wasn't being my-"
"Ah! Or could it be that he's your kind of guy?" He cried out in distress.
His ridiculous inference made Vanora's face fall flat again. /What in the world runs through this guy's mind? He's so.../
[Eccentric.] BaoBao completed her sentence while trying to stifle his laughter. The second male lead of this world was very entertaining for him. Moreover, BaoBao noticed that whenever Vlad acted this way, it never failed to distract Vanora from her worries. It helped her stay rooted in the present moment.
Vlad started to debate with himself if he should change his looks to make it more similar to that angel. It was like he was putting on a show for Vanora. Just as she was done with the last plate on the table, Vlad came to a conclusion. "Ah! Forget it. I'll never stoop to look like some angel. You'll give me a chance, won't you?" He asked with a shit-eating grin.
Vanora looked at him weirdly. /He can really entertain himself./
He continued without waiting for her reply. "Anyway, I'll take care of everything else, so don't you worry. Just do what you have to. Go ahead and immerse yourself in your journey to getting stronger."
His tone dramatically and suddenly turned serious and he gazed directly into her eyes. "Don't worry about getting lost or stuck. I'll always be here to pull you back and support you." It was an unspoken promise.
Vanora blushed and looked away. "How absurd." She said under her breath.
Vlad smiled warmly, then ushered her off to bed. "Okay, off to bed you go now."
Thanks to Vlad being a distraction from her negative feelings, Vanora did not take too long to fall sound asleep. Vlad finally relaxed after seeing her retire for the day, so he went about the room doing what needed to be done, before joining Vanora in bed.
The next day, Vlad led everyone to flank the army of angels fighting in the main battlefield. Now that Vanora regained her sanity, he trusted her to cooperate and survive on the main battlefield. The element of surprise gave the hell beings a temporary advantage. Everyone, except Vlad, went all out. Amidst the huge fierce battle going on all around him, Vlad focused more on ensuring that Vanora was always fighting with no more than three warrior angels at once. Whenever she fought against the stronger ones, he occupied any other being that wanted to interfere, no matter if they were angel or not. The pair's teamwork was almost impeccable, but Vanora knew that the credit belonged to Vlad. Eventually, the land lost to the angels got reclaimed. Nature withered and died, humans turned more and more bitter, and the land was devastated. The hell beings continued to advance. Everyday, Vlad made sure that Vanora ate a full meal before he teleported them to the surface. When
Vlad teleported himself away, but he did not escape unscathed. His clothes were in tatters. Deep wounds littered his body. However, he stayed among the treetop and looked down at Michael with a smirk, looking completely unbothered by his state. It was as if the battle was already concluded with him being announced as the victor. Michael used his sword as support and pushed himself off the ground very slowly. He was clearly drained of strength. Although he looked up at where Vlad was, there was a glazed over look in his eyes, like he was only half conscious. "Humph. You're still not dead." Vlad sounded a tad bit impressed. "You're either the strongest or one of the strongest already. Then let's see how you survive this!" Vlad multiplied himself again then had all his copies bear down on Michael at the same time. Despite his spacey look, Michael squeezed the handle of his sword just before the first attack could land. The same rugged light streaks shot up
"Hold up, are you really Lord Vlad? What's with the way you're behaving? You're creeping me out." Raven said with a slightly disturbed look on her face. He frowned and looked at her sharply. "Got a problem?" Raven relaxed now that he was speaking in the familiar ice cold tone. "I wouldn't have one if you gave me your title of demon lord as well. Why would I only want your duties?" "You can have it for all I care." He said dismissively, then turned his attention back on Vanora. "You'd have to die." She raised an eyebrow as she stated the obvious. "Feel free to try." He casually remarked while placing his arm around Vanora's shoulders, but he found his arm going through air instead. Vanora had disappeared from her spot, faster than anyone could blink. He turned around and found Raven entangled with Vanora a safe distance away from him. Anger bubbled up inside him. The whites of his eyes to turned black. She dared to insult him by stealing his gi
The fog took a much longer time before it cleared up. Vanora inferred that the castle must be quite a distance away from the inn.Once it cleared up, the first thing Vanora noticed was not how ridiculously large and spacious the room was, but how there were piles and piles of black paper scattered around the room. Some were even as tall as her. When she looked down, she found out that they were even standing on some important looking documents. The gold rim and letterings were the only thing that made it stand out against the black floor."Bloody hell. Didn't Raven say that she took over my duties? How's it such a mess? I don't think two months worth of work is even this much." He frowned, perplexed by the situation of his study."She probably did a bad job for you in vengeance." Vanora explained offhandedly. It definitely sounded like something Raven would do based on what Raven said to Vlad earlier. He looked at her with surprise. "You think so?"
At the end of the day, Vlad and Vanora returned to the castle instead of the inn. Vlad knew that Vanora preferred to not waste time on teleporting between three areas. Besides, the table in the study was large enough for them to eat at, without needing to move anything aside.“Vlad… Can you keep your distance whenever we’re in front of others?”“Why?”“I don’t want trouble.”“No one would dare.”“Of course, YOU won’t be troubled.”“You won’t be either, if you’re associated with me.”“Trouble will find me BECAUSE I&rs
After a short contemplation, the well-respected being finally spoke. "It's still too early to judge anything. We don't know what caused its behaviour. If it's related to its host, we would only be sending another system to its demise. If there are more signs that indicate going towards a negative ending, it'll never be too late to end BaoBao. Give it a system upgrade now, but quarantine its connections. The only ones it should be able to contact is us." No one argued and everyone returned to work. Some continued operations as per normal. Others attended to BaoBao's situation. This was how they were. No fuss, efficient, and effective. When they were done, they reported BaoBao's vitality signs and current condition to the one who gave the command. "How quickly it recovers now is up to it. Its host should be able to tide over by herself in the meantime. Our systems wouldn't keep themselves bounded with weak hosts." /BaoBao! BaoBao! What's wrong?! Where are y
Amidst the silence of the night and the snores, the soft rustle of leaves and grass could be heard here and there. Finally, some ghouls that should have been on patrol appeared and stood around Vanora. They looked at Vanora with a glazed over look in their eyes./Take her away from Lord Vlad. Place her in someone else’s arms./The order echoed repeatedly in their mind. They moved as one and pulled Vanora away from Vlad. They pulled, and pulled, and pulled, but Vanora was stuck as if she was rooted to the ground. Being mindless creatures at the moment, they did not stop to consider why, nor did they notice the black mark appear on the back of Vlad’s hand.Vlad’s eyes flew open. The sight of ghouls still pulling onto Vanora put him in a blind rage. A burst of power exploded from him and decayed everything around him, including any beings that happened to be sleeping close enough to him. Only Vanora, who was still unconscious and no
For the next month, Vanora did not catch a single glimpse of purple waves or bright childish green eyes. Gradually, she was able to calm her nerves, but just a little. Rosa's death was not confirmed, after all. Meanwhile, it was as if Vlad could sense her anxiety. Everytime before they slept, he reassured her that no one could enter his castle. Whenever they had to sleep in the open due to Raven's absence, he insisted that she slept in his arms. Initially, she only gave in because hell beings would not dare to touch their demon lord. Sleeping was one of the times when she was the most vulnerable, so being in his arms was especially helpful. However, after she experienced how much safer she felt and how much better her sleep was, she began sleeping in his arms more willingly. The hell beings that made up the current army were stronger but made it a point to unwind. Each time they asked for permission to le
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
