Luna woke up to intense pain coursing through her entire body. She hissed in frustration.
/First I wake up weak like I was on the verge of dying. Now I wake up in pain like I'm dying again. What next? I wake up when I'm supposed to be lying dead in a coffin?/
BaoBao winced. He could not control when she would appear in the story. [Do you want to receive the original soul's memories first or for me to carry you somewhere to recover first?]
/Give me the memories. I need to understand the situation I'm in first before knowing where I can go./
The first thing Luna understood upon receiving the memories was that she was in a dog eat dog world. Everything was decided by power, including the position of the ruler of the country. All they had to do was to challenge the ruler to an official death match, if the match was refused, a revolt was allowed.
People in this world had real magical abilities. They could create something out of nothing. The most common ability was creating an element of nature. People who could create two kinds of things were called Talents. People who could create three kinds of things were called Blessings. Unlike the previous world, there was no clear distinctions in power within each level. There was only a continuum of how well you could understand and control your ability.
There existed a small population of people who did not have magical abilities. They were called Scums. They were always on the run and easy picking for tyrants. They lived in poor conditions like the slums.
One day, a powerful person emerged out of nowhere and challenged the king to a death match. He successfully took the throne and created the one and only safe haven for Scums to live under his protection.
Alice was a girl born in this haven. Her parents were Scum but she was born with the ability to create water. Being treated as a miracle within that haven, she had the chance to meet that very king. She learnt about the history and the king's motivation and beliefs. Scums could be strong. Those with magic could be stronger with someone to protect. Alice internalised these words and the expectations everyone had of her. With that, the king secretly sponsored her studies at the best school for ability users.
No one expected that trouble would find her even without standing out as a scholarship student sponsored by the king.
The school was a boarding school far away from the haven and the castle. Alice grew up well-loved by others. She had not been properly prepared to survive in a dog eat dog world by herself. Her optimistic, innocent, and bubbly personality rubbed the stronger ones the wrong way. They believed that a weak person like her did not deserve to be so carefree. She became a target of bullies and she became quiet and meek after just 1 year of school.
Not wanting to disappoint anyone back home or cause trouble, she did not mention a thing to her family or the king. Everyone back home remained blissfully ignorant of Alice's suffering.
Only one thing comforted Alice in school - Her idol, Violet. A Talent who was the only advocate of the king's belief. She stood up for and protected the weaker students in school. While doing so, she clashed with the notoriously strongest Blessing in school, Stephan. Although Stephan had not yet explicitly agreed with Violet's and the king's ideology, he somehow stayed by her side. Inadvertently, he supported her cause. So, every time Alice saw Violet, it was like a reminder that not all hope was lost.
/It's an enemies turn lovers romance. It's painfully clear to see. But... I can't identify the obstacles. There's no other notable characters in her memories. That childhood friend of Violet is so reserved, he likely won't do anything./
[The original soul's wish is to avoid being a liability to Violet and to be useful to her.] BaoBao gave her the final information.
/That makes it sound like I'm affiliated with her. Don't tell me-/
[About that, they're on the way here.]
/I see. This must be the first meeting. Great./
Alice bore the pain coursing through her body and tried to move. Her movement caused a sharp and intense pain to shoot through her right arm. She bit back the urge to shout in pain. Alice lifted the flap of her bloodied white blazer to look at her right arm. The bone was sticking out. Blood oozed out to form a puddle.
Her bullies really roughened her up this time after they found out how she idolised Violet. They vented their hatred for Violet onto Alice. They had mocked Alice while bashing her up, "Where's your idol when you need her? One has to stand for themselves to survive! Not rely on others! You useless piece of shit!"
She sighed then slowly used her better arm to push herself off the ground. By the time she sat up, three people came around the corner. Before she knew it, a flurry of bright golden hair filled Alice's vision.
A soft and gentle voice rang beside her ears. "What happened?! No, before that, let me bring you to the doctor!"
Alice shook off the hand that was holding onto her better arm. "I don't need your help." Alice said weakly but it was filled with clarity and determination.
While she was standing up, her whole body trembled and she broke out in cold sweat. By now, two boys joined the girls at the scene. Violet reached out wanting to help again but froze when Alice stared at her coldly. Alice bit out, "DON'T touch me."
"Why're you so harsh? She was only trying to help." The boy with deep dark blue hair snapped back in Violet's place.
Alice had expected Stephan to be the one to snap, but she still met Ethan's gaze evenly. "Did I ask for help?" Without waiting for a response, she turned to leave, leaving a trail of blood in her wake.
Behind her, Violet and Stephan stared at Ethan, then exchanged equally surprised gazes.
Ethan had not thought anything of this injured girl until he got a closer look at her. Something about the look in her eyes disturbed him. This was a first for him. He usually did not feel anything for any victim that Violet helped. Disgruntled by it, he had shot his mouth off before he knew it.
Stephan was the first to recover. "Both of you should just leave her. She is probably someone weak and unpleasant. That's why she got bullied. Don't waste your effort on someone like that."
Violet pouted and glared at him. She stomped on his foot then led them to tail Alice quietly. Stephan grinned as he followed Violet, while Ethan followed without a sound of complaint.
Alice made her way to the clinic in school. She gave the three companions a last cold look before entering the clinic. Everyone understood it as her warning to stay away. Violet heaved a sigh of relief now that Alice reached the clinic safely. While Violet and Stephan walked away, Ethan's gaze lingered on the clinic's door for a little longer before dismissing Alice's existence, like he did for every other person Violet helped.
A notification beeped and BaoBao shared the news with Alice. [Oh, you already passed the first instance of relying on the female lead! The original soul had to be carried to the clinic which started a dependent relationship between them.]
"Alice! What happened this time?! Why's it so bad?!" Doctor Nina exclaimed. She wondered how Alice made it to her clinic by herself in this state. /Could it be that her tolerance for pain became insanely good?/
The doctor could not decide if it was a good or bad thing for Alice.
Alice wordlessly sat on the bed. Doctor Nina did not press for information. She wanted to let Alice rest. She carefully helped Alice remove the blazer and her uniform to clean and dress her wounds.
Doctor Nina had rare healing abilities but there was a limit to what it could do. She could only speed up the process and very easily identify causes for illnesses. It would not magically cause wounds to disappear.
She fixed Alice's bone, then used her abilities to speed up healing, so that there would be no need for a surgery or metal plates. She stitched open wounds while her ability was in use, so that it would not leave any scars. However, deep wounds like the one on her broken arm would still leave a mark.
"If not for me, you'd likely look like a monster by now. How can they do this to a girl. Not even your face is spared." Doctor Nina never failed to grumble under her breath while stitching her wounds.
When Doctor Nina was done, she helped Alice wear a clean and new set of uniform. Doctor Nina now always had one on standby for her. She felt like it was the least she could do for Alice. Alice thanked her in a soft voice then returned to her dorm lethargically. Nina sighed and looked at Alice's back with pity in her eyes. She prepared the necessary documents to apply for a month's absence from class for Alice.
When Alice returned to her room, she collapsed on her bed and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up, it was late in the evening. She took a shower, got dressed, and ate the simple meal of eggs and vegetables prepared by BaoBao. Seeing how little ingredients there were in the house, the both of them decided to shop for groceries the next day.
"Are abilities transferable across the worlds?" Alice suddenly asked.
"Some are, some are not. For example, the magical abilities you have in this world can't be transferred. Things like spiritual energy in the previous world is something that every being has, regardless of the world they're in. The strength you accumulated in one world, carries over into the next world. But the application of it may differ."
Alice nodded and tried to cultivate her spiritual energy in her body.
Alice quickly realised that her spiritual energy could not flow in or out of her body. If she had to describe it, it was as if her pores were clogged or plugged close. Now that she focused intensely on the quality of the air around her, she could not feel the same energy in it that she felt in the previous world. So, she could only circulate and control the flow of the energy within her. She played around with the flow, then tested if she could concentrate the energy flow to a specific body part. Finding that it was possible, she moved on to test the effects. She set up the pillow nicely against the wall, then punched it with her good arm. Poof. Her punch was measly. The original soul had seriously neglected training her body, like many other magic users do. She fluffed up the pillow nicely again, then threw the same punch, except this time, she concentrated the flow of energy into her arm. Her hand flew faster. Ponk! Along with the sound, some stuffing squeezed out of the holes tha
BaoBao knew that Alice could not see so he warned her. [Defend!!] Alice immediately curled herself into a ball and surrounded herself with a water wall. In the next instant, fire broke through the earth and hit her. She focused her defense on her left side while she kicked the walls around her repeatedly. She did not dare to take a break. She did not know how much he had reinforced the cage and her water wall was already dangerously thin. Just before her water wall completely evaporated, her foot broke through the earth box. However, she jumped right into another earth wall. One of his lackeys had stayed alert and provided assistance when he saw Alice break out. Her water wall evaporated. Intense heat seared her sides and a short cry escaped her mouth. As soon as she felt the burning pain, a strong cooling breeze blew through the entire area. The earth walls around her shattered and she braced herself for impact. Instead, she found he
Meanwhile, back in Alice room, Alice reflected on the fight with the fire user, while looking at the water ball floating above her bandaged hand. She thought about how her water wall changed to steam. /Understanding our ability like it is a part of our body... I know the chemistry of water and about the movement of particles... Would it be possible to manipulate it down to the individual particles?/ She visualised her water ability down to its individual water particles then imagined them moving differently. She visualised slowing down the particles' movement and making them increasingly compact. Sweat began to bead on her forehead from her intense concentration. It took a whole five minutes before BaoBao exclaimed, "I see some frost forming on the surface!" Alice made the water disperse and panted. /It's possible! I can change the state of my water!/ BaoBao could not believe it too. If she could change the state of water into ice an
That night, the first sparring match was held. Violet first paired up with Alice while Ethan paired up with Stephan. Violet was not an overbearing opponent and Alice felt like it was a perfect practice match for a warm up. Moreover, Violet's fire ability was naturally against her water ability. It was good for her to practice increasing the strength of her power and withstand other's attacks. After an hour, Ethan paired up with Alice while Violet paired up with Stephan. Ethan was a little trickier as he had a similar fighting style with Alice. However, she still did not have to go all out with Ethan because he left loopholes in his stances and attacks that she took advantage off. After another hour, Stephan paired up with Alice, while Violet paired up with Ethan. Alice knew that Stephan was unlike the other two who would go easy on her, so she decided to use this chance to go all out. Despite that, Stephan looked the most bored out of the three she sparred wi
Alice ended up having lunch with the trio. Violet was not a chatterbox but because Ethan and Alice hardly spoke, she dominated conversations. Stephan was the next in line for always responding to Violet either by teasing her or giving proper responses. Alice only replied whenever she was asked something. Ethan was... largely ignored. Violet only paid attention to him when he says something proactively. [Should you talk to him a little?] BaoBao felt a little sorry for him. /What for? Such is the fate of the second male lead./ Alice told BaoBao. BaoBao kept quiet. He truly did not have a reason to give. /Besides, he's happy enough being near the female lead. Just leave him be./ Alice decided to be kinder to BaoBao who was only being sympathetic. With Alice's reassurance, BaoBao felt enlightened and thought to himself. [Is this what it means to think from their perspective?] Nigh
After another hour of non-stop sparring was almost up, Ethan noticed Alice's rugged breathing and sluggish movement. He dodged her water sprouts and suddenly advanced towards Alice at a high speed. She instinctively raised her hands to form an ice wall but he reached before anything could form. He took her hands in his and lowered it back down gently while saying, "That's enough for today." Alice was covered in sweat and panting. She did not have the energy to refute. She just nodded briefly, thanked him, and left immediately to rest in her room. In her previous life, she could last 3 hours of martial arts practice with Zhang Yong but that was when she had the spiritual cultivation to extend her stamina. In this world, there was no such thing. As their plan was to spar for three hours, the other two were surprised when they noticed Alice leaving the battle hall. They ran up to Ethan who was already making his way to the entrance of the battle hall. "D
Since this was her final night sparring with Violet and Stephan, she spent more time sparring with them. Still not trusting Stephan to be alone with Alice, they made it a doubles match after her spar with Violet. The improved relationship and chemistry between Stephan and Violet made it harder to defend against their attacks and attack them. However, the lead couple could not gain much of an advantage over Ethan and Alice either. They already shared good chemistry and their abilities were tricky and flexible in nature. Alice's improvement was what levelled the playing field somewhat. As a result, they were caught in a stalemate for almost the entire hour. Ethan sent a tidal wave that travelled a lot faster than what would happen in nature. Alice covered his blind spots in the meantime. At the same time, a loud crack suddenly rang throughout the hall. Recognising the sound, Ethan's head snapped up and found the black cloud right above Alice. His body reacted before he could t
The moment their hands touched, they grabbed onto each other. Ethan pulled her up the last part of the wall with ease. The sight that greeted her was breath-taking. A meadow of sparkling differently coloured trees expanded across a wide area and ended at some grandiose house in the distance. Some trees had golden leaves, some had silver leaves, some had pink leaves, some had the normal green leaves. Small shiny ruby red berry-like fruits hung off the branches of each tree. She landed on the wall and took in the sight. The meadow blended into a large blue lake that currently sparkled just as brilliantly, as it reflected the sunlight. It was like a scene out of a fantasy book. The sight overwhelmed her and struck her speechless. This place was more than nice. She did not know that such trees existed. It had never appeared in the original soul's memories. She looked at Ethan for answers. He put his finger on his lips with a slight smirk. "It's someone's private garden.
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
