Luna regained consciousness and found herself back in the black claustrophobic space. Her body felt light and comfortable again. It felt as if her experience of dying just moments ago was nothing but a bad dream.
"Is it always like this here?" Luna looked at BaoBao who was in the space with her instead of talking to her through telepathy like the first time they met.
BaoBao looked around the seemingly empty space. "Seems like it..."
"It can't be changed?"
"This space is supposed to reflect the host's heart. I've never heard of it changing its appearance before."
"So my heart's black?"
"I don't know. We've never considered interpreting its appearance."
"Doesn't matter then." Luna had only asked about it in passing. "Would you know what happens in the rest of the story?"
"Yup! I will know everything along with the results of your performance."
"So?"
"ZhangYong interrogated the spy, found out about ZiYao, and delivered justice. It's a happy ending for everyone. Except you..."
Luna sighed softly. "Wanting a happy ending for myself would be asking for too much. I don't even know if I can pass my mission or not."
Silence hung in the air. BaoBao was not continuing on to the results like Luna expected. "Is there something wrong?"
"What? No. Why?" BaoBao said it so defensively that Luna began suspecting something.
"I failed, didn't I?"
"Huh?! No! How did you come up with that conclusion?"
"You weren't moving on to the results."
"You- You didn't ask for it..."
Luna simply raised an eyebrow in response.
"It's a B... We only scrapped past the flogging event... Although we managed to escape the marriage, we still died after being played with..." BaoBao sighed.
Only when hosts get an S grade would they be noticed by the administrators immediately. Otherwise, they would need to constantly get A grades before they would be noticed. Those scoring any poorer than that would be left alone and the system would take very long before it could advance into a higher grade system.
"That's true." Luna nodded.
BaoBao was already sad about it. He believed that Luna who did all the hard work would be equally upset and disappointed. He had witnessed first-hand how much effort she put into training and into outwitting the plot. He looked at her listless expression and felt like he had to say something.
"Well, the soul was still pacified because it was not some weak powerless person anymore and we lived freely and happily for a good 5 years in the wild!"
"Mm." Luna agreed with him.
"So- So... Don't mind the grade! We did great and that the original soul must be really happy with us!"
Luna finally realised that he was trying to comfort her. "Just so you know, I'm fine, I did whatever I could already."
BaoBao was speechless. He could not understand how she could accept her grade like it like another boring piece of information.
BaoBao begun weighing the pros and cons of being with Luna. He wanted to become a higher grade system as soon as possible but that was dependent on their host's performance. The logical and normal thing to do was to abandon Luna now. No matter how many times he repeated his calculations, or changed the variables, the probability of her succeeding was too low for his liking. There was only one issue. He did not feel like leaving Luna. He had fun with her and experienced other more complicated but often nice feelings. Moreover, she had awed him whenever her predictions beat his.
[Maybe my data will be proven wrong again.] BaoBao reasoned with himself. He ended up blaming the administrators for being blind to her efforts and for giving her a lower grade than she deserved.
Suddenly, he received a message from the administrators. BaoBao momentarily freaked out as he thought that the administrators heard his thought. However, he shouted in joy when he read the message. "Our grade got changed to S!!!"
Luna looked at him with widened eyes. "Could grades change like this?"
"No! This is a first! Thanks to our good performance, they allowed me to share certain information with you to aid in your understanding of how our grades seem to work differently in our case!"
Suddenly, BaoBao stopped and simply stared at Luna. She still looked as calm as ever.
"Go on and share the information with me."
"Why don't you seem happy? Aren't you happy?" BaoBao was confused. [Does she really not care about anything?]
Luna got more confused than him. "Happy about?"
"Our S grade. They praised us. I praised you."
"Oh. I'm glad that you got the recognition you wanted BaoBao! Well done!" Luna smiled gently and praised him too. Luna felt more surprised than she was happy. This was the first time she received such an exceptional result. She did not dare to believe it.
BaoBao sulked a little. "I wasn't asking to be praised... Ah, forget it. I'll tell you about my purpose now. We normally receive missions related to fixing major problems. For example, resolving a bug that infiltrated into the world or when the second female lead or some other major character died with too strong a grievance. Things like that cause too much of a disturbance in the world's consciousness, which could cause the world to crumble and cease to exist."
"And all of you help those worlds for the fun of it?"
"Sort of? We don't need them but the more worlds that exist, the more data we can gather. It's beneficial for us if they survive. Also, the more stable the worlds are, the easier it is for us to transverse time and space. The destruction of worlds create black holes and warps things."
Luna nodded to indicate for him to continue with his explanation.
"We only recently started to deal with smaller issues. Like the grievances of side unknown characters that gained a consciousness of their own. Although the disturbance they cause is not anything significant, it affects the stability of the world and creates loopholes for bugs to even happen.
However, this matter is quite tricky. If hosts do too well and outdo the original leads and second leads, it forces a creation of another main character which absorbs the power of the world's consciousness.
What happened in our case is that we appeased the original soul while keeping the world's balance. In a sense, our performance was perfect! That was why a B performance like ours will receive an S ranked evaluation."
"So... My inability to create exceptional results is actually now... Useful?" Luna clarified.
"You got it!"
Luna waited a while more to make sure that BaoBao was done with sharing. Since BaoBao did not bring up the system market that he mentioned by accident, she inferred that it was still confidential information.
Meanwhile, BaoBao was secretly complaining to himself. [What stingy administrators... They still want to confirm the worth of this department before opening up resources for us to use.]
"Shall we move on to the next world then?" Luna asked.
"Sure!" BaoBao put in the request to be assigned to the next world.
"Will I know which world I'll be sent to?"
BaoBao pouted. "You could, but not now."
"Alright." Suddenly, a hard and painful tug on her soul came without warning and knocked her out cold.
BaoBao pursed his lips when he saw her face contort a little in pain just before she disappeared from the space.
[Ah... I forgot to remind her of the pain...]
Luna woke up to intense pain coursing through her entire body. She hissed in frustration. /First I wake up weak like I was on the verge of dying. Now I wake up in pain like I'm dying again. What next? I wake up when I'm supposed to be lying dead in a coffin?/ BaoBao winced. He could not control when she would appear in the story. [Do you want to receive the original soul's memories first or for me to carry you somewhere to recover first?] /Give me the memories. I need to understand the situation I'm in first before knowing where I can go./ The first thing Luna understood upon receiving the memories was that she was in a dog eat dog world. Everything was decided by power, including the position of the ruler of the country. All they had to do was to challenge the ruler to an official death match, if the match was refused, a revolt was allowed. People in this world had real magical abilities. They could create s
Alice quickly realised that her spiritual energy could not flow in or out of her body. If she had to describe it, it was as if her pores were clogged or plugged close. Now that she focused intensely on the quality of the air around her, she could not feel the same energy in it that she felt in the previous world. So, she could only circulate and control the flow of the energy within her. She played around with the flow, then tested if she could concentrate the energy flow to a specific body part. Finding that it was possible, she moved on to test the effects. She set up the pillow nicely against the wall, then punched it with her good arm. Poof. Her punch was measly. The original soul had seriously neglected training her body, like many other magic users do. She fluffed up the pillow nicely again, then threw the same punch, except this time, she concentrated the flow of energy into her arm. Her hand flew faster. Ponk! Along with the sound, some stuffing squeezed out of the holes tha
BaoBao knew that Alice could not see so he warned her. [Defend!!] Alice immediately curled herself into a ball and surrounded herself with a water wall. In the next instant, fire broke through the earth and hit her. She focused her defense on her left side while she kicked the walls around her repeatedly. She did not dare to take a break. She did not know how much he had reinforced the cage and her water wall was already dangerously thin. Just before her water wall completely evaporated, her foot broke through the earth box. However, she jumped right into another earth wall. One of his lackeys had stayed alert and provided assistance when he saw Alice break out. Her water wall evaporated. Intense heat seared her sides and a short cry escaped her mouth. As soon as she felt the burning pain, a strong cooling breeze blew through the entire area. The earth walls around her shattered and she braced herself for impact. Instead, she found he
Meanwhile, back in Alice room, Alice reflected on the fight with the fire user, while looking at the water ball floating above her bandaged hand. She thought about how her water wall changed to steam. /Understanding our ability like it is a part of our body... I know the chemistry of water and about the movement of particles... Would it be possible to manipulate it down to the individual particles?/ She visualised her water ability down to its individual water particles then imagined them moving differently. She visualised slowing down the particles' movement and making them increasingly compact. Sweat began to bead on her forehead from her intense concentration. It took a whole five minutes before BaoBao exclaimed, "I see some frost forming on the surface!" Alice made the water disperse and panted. /It's possible! I can change the state of my water!/ BaoBao could not believe it too. If she could change the state of water into ice an
That night, the first sparring match was held. Violet first paired up with Alice while Ethan paired up with Stephan. Violet was not an overbearing opponent and Alice felt like it was a perfect practice match for a warm up. Moreover, Violet's fire ability was naturally against her water ability. It was good for her to practice increasing the strength of her power and withstand other's attacks. After an hour, Ethan paired up with Alice while Violet paired up with Stephan. Ethan was a little trickier as he had a similar fighting style with Alice. However, she still did not have to go all out with Ethan because he left loopholes in his stances and attacks that she took advantage off. After another hour, Stephan paired up with Alice, while Violet paired up with Ethan. Alice knew that Stephan was unlike the other two who would go easy on her, so she decided to use this chance to go all out. Despite that, Stephan looked the most bored out of the three she sparred wi
Alice ended up having lunch with the trio. Violet was not a chatterbox but because Ethan and Alice hardly spoke, she dominated conversations. Stephan was the next in line for always responding to Violet either by teasing her or giving proper responses. Alice only replied whenever she was asked something. Ethan was... largely ignored. Violet only paid attention to him when he says something proactively. [Should you talk to him a little?] BaoBao felt a little sorry for him. /What for? Such is the fate of the second male lead./ Alice told BaoBao. BaoBao kept quiet. He truly did not have a reason to give. /Besides, he's happy enough being near the female lead. Just leave him be./ Alice decided to be kinder to BaoBao who was only being sympathetic. With Alice's reassurance, BaoBao felt enlightened and thought to himself. [Is this what it means to think from their perspective?] Nigh
After another hour of non-stop sparring was almost up, Ethan noticed Alice's rugged breathing and sluggish movement. He dodged her water sprouts and suddenly advanced towards Alice at a high speed. She instinctively raised her hands to form an ice wall but he reached before anything could form. He took her hands in his and lowered it back down gently while saying, "That's enough for today." Alice was covered in sweat and panting. She did not have the energy to refute. She just nodded briefly, thanked him, and left immediately to rest in her room. In her previous life, she could last 3 hours of martial arts practice with Zhang Yong but that was when she had the spiritual cultivation to extend her stamina. In this world, there was no such thing. As their plan was to spar for three hours, the other two were surprised when they noticed Alice leaving the battle hall. They ran up to Ethan who was already making his way to the entrance of the battle hall. "D
Since this was her final night sparring with Violet and Stephan, she spent more time sparring with them. Still not trusting Stephan to be alone with Alice, they made it a doubles match after her spar with Violet. The improved relationship and chemistry between Stephan and Violet made it harder to defend against their attacks and attack them. However, the lead couple could not gain much of an advantage over Ethan and Alice either. They already shared good chemistry and their abilities were tricky and flexible in nature. Alice's improvement was what levelled the playing field somewhat. As a result, they were caught in a stalemate for almost the entire hour. Ethan sent a tidal wave that travelled a lot faster than what would happen in nature. Alice covered his blind spots in the meantime. At the same time, a loud crack suddenly rang throughout the hall. Recognising the sound, Ethan's head snapped up and found the black cloud right above Alice. His body reacted before he could t
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
