"Luna? ...Luna? Are you okay?"
Luna kept her eyes closed and her face was slightly pale. The pain of dying had been intense this time round and she felt that it was truly quite a horrifying way to die. She'd rather bleed out like she did in her original world and in the previous world.
"...Luna?" BaoBao was slightly worried.
/I'm fine. Just... give me a while./
BaoBao kept quiet and let Luna rest. He knew how weary she must be feeling since she still talked to him telepathically.
Luna drifted off to sleep.
Around 2 hours later, she woke up to find herself in darkness. She was momentarily confused until she remembered that she had died.
BaoBao appeared by her side the moment he knew that she was awake. "Luna? Feeling better?"
Luna nodded. "How did this world go?"
"You avoided forging a friendship with Violet and the others where the original soul was completely dependent on them. You avoided being the one to associate Leah with Violet. The last part is really interesting."
Luna cocked her head, waiting for BaoBao to explain.
"Besides how the entire battle and confrontation in the forest went differently, which was thanks to you, in the original story, when the original soul died, Violet got gravely injured from trying to rush to you. Her injury would give the boys a power boost due to their anger and that would spur them on to win the battle. However this time...!"
Luna noticed the way BaoBao sounded really excited as if he was suppressing a scream. /Did he regress back to a fanboy? What happened?/
BaoBao heard her thoughts and that instantly cooled him down again. He coughed, apologised, then continued explaining. "You threw her back, saved her from injury and the story changed a little from there although the ending was the same. It was only Ethan who went ballistic and he attacked in ways that was far more overpowering than how he did in the original story."
BaoBao looked at how Luna widened her eyes. Just as he thought that she was touched, he heard her thoughts. "Did it affect the rest of the story then? Will there be any issues?"
BaoBao did not know whether to laugh or cry at her nonchalance about having the second male lead go totally out of character for her. "It's fine... Violet and Stephan were shocked not by his show of power but by how much he grieved for you. It captured Violet's attention for awhile, but Stephan easily gained her attention back, especially when Ethan essentially dropped out of the competition for her hand. Nothing changed in the story expect some minor insignificant details."
Luna sighed in relief. "I'm curious about something. Was everything orchestrated by the second female lead? And her involvement in the story was much higher than what I was exposed to, right?"
BaoBao nodded. "She did a lot of things to trouble both Stephan's and Violet's family. Instigated a lot of bullies and fanned the fire of hatred against Violet. She did everything so meticulously that she really was not found out till this last ambush."
"On hindsight, this explains why the 'amazing' female lead was unable to gain much support. Normally there'd be at least some if there was no one acting against her." Luna thought about it.
"True..." BaoBao recalled at this point that his wrong prediction and smugness at the moment before anything was concluded caused everything to go wrong when it could have been prevented.
Luna noticed his silence. She saw how he was floating unusually low and hanging his head. Without the need to ask, she could guess the cause of it. "Just don't repeat it again."
BaoBao's eyes widened and he teared up a little. He nodded firmly to show his promise to her. He rubbed his eyes with his stubby arm then continued to talk energetically again. He knew that Luna did not fancy dallying. "About grades... It doesn't seem like you did anything wrong this time but..." BaoBao started to look a little puzzled.
"The grade's still not very good, right?"
"Not exactly. Your performance did get a grading of A. But... after all that you have accomplished, I was expecting an S grade. Apparently, the reason for your grade is that you still barely passed each mission by a hair's breadth..." BaoBao secretly complained to himself. [The administrators are such stingy cheats. Humph!]
"Oh well, what matters is if there was a reassessment. How pleased was this world's consciousness?"
"It's an S grade again!" BaoBao excitedly cheered for Luna. "The original soul was more than pleased and its satisfaction provided some energy for the world. The world decided to overlook the second male lead's OOC since it did not affect the plot too badly."
Luna nodded then asked BaoBao about the next world.
BaoBao sulked. "Can't you at least show a little reaction?"
Luna blinked innocently. "...Woohoo, good job to us. We did it...!" However, she said it in such a flat tone that it made BaoBao's skin crawl.
"Okay, okay, forget it. Just... Never mind."
Luna waited for BaoBao to send her to the next world, however he continued talking.
"Before I send you to the next world, there is a new function that the administrators opened up for us!" BaoBao said cheerfully.
"Already? Looks like they're very generous when it comes to rewarding and encouraging good results." Luna commented.
[You don't understand Luna, you're getting the short end of the stick here... Normally hosts would have all these functions available to them from the start~]
BaoBao wailed to himself.Luna raised an eyebrow upon seeing BaoBao's aggrieved look. /What's he thinking about this time?/
When BaoBao did not say anything in response, she realised that it was another one of those moments when he did not seem to know her thoughts. So she voiced her suspicion. "BaoBao, it is possible to disconnect our thoughts, isn't it?"
BaoBao froze. Luna was asking it casually but BaoBao took it as a threat.
Before he bound with her spirit, he learnt from other systems' experiences that this was the most useless function systems had. There was not one host to date that has used this function yet. "Ye- Yes... I didn't think that you would mind it. Do you want to keep it disconnected after all?" BaoBao replied timidly.
Luna shook her head. "No need. It's quite convenient for you to immediately know anything I need."
BaoBao looked at her with astonishment.
Luna cocked her head when she saw his expression. "Am I wrong?"
BaoBao thought back to his crucial mistake of becoming smug and disconnecting their thoughts in the midst of the battle. "No, no. It really is useful... It's just... you're an outlier." BaoBao replied in a breathless voice.
He felt pretty good that he had not gotten Luna's character wrong. He was right at the start about her not minding it. His worry that stemmed from data about the history of all hosts was needless in the end.
"So what's the new function?" Luna prompted BaoBao.
"Ah! The library resource has been made available for us!"
"A library?"
"Yes! There are two kinds of books in the library. The world books and the books of knowledge. The world books are chosen at random and is the next world you'd be entering. The book allows you to read the entire story before sending you in whenever you're ready. The books for knowledge are in case you need to brush up a certain kind of knowledge first before entering the world."
While Luna pondered over its use, BaoBao was secretly lamenting to himself. Although he sounded cheerful, he was not entirely happy because the most important and useful thing for Luna was still not made available. [Giving the world book to someone like Luna who has the perception talent... How useful can that be?!]
As BaoBao was absorbed into his thoughts, he did not notice Luna nodding as she thought about the uses the world book could have for her.
"BaoBao, let's pick a world now then."
BaoBao input the request to be assigned a world and a dark red book with gold trimmings soon appeared in front of Luna.
"A book?"
"What did you think?" BaoBao cocked his head.
"I had thought you only called it a library to refer to it as some collection of knowledge. Just a term for the ease of reference."
"It actually is."
"Why don't you send all the information into my brain like you usually do?"
"That's different. Those are the memories of the original soul which is triggered by intensely stimulating various parts of the brain. That's why you get an intense headache together with the information."
"You can't input new information into the brain?"
"No."
"So... you can do all these..." Luna gestured to all of herself and all around her then continued "But you can't do something like inserting information into brains?"
"To be precise, we can create false information in the brain but that is tedious and takes time. It's a whole different matter as compared to the creation of all these." BaoBao copied her earlier gestures. He proceeded on to explain the finer details to Luna since she seemed interested to know.
Luna felt like she could only barely grasp onto everything that BaoBao was sharing with her. There were a lot of technical jargon and knowledge that she was not familiar with. However, she did understand one thing. "So... The way we, hosts, are made are just different from you systems. So you cannot share information with us like you do with each other. Although it's possible to input memories and new information into our souls, it's akin to learning it ourselves?" Luna concluded.
BaoBao nodded.
"Are you sure you're allowed to share all these with me? Sounds like valuable knowledge." Luna asked. She was worried that BaoBao who looked so young would make a careless mistake and end up harming himself.
"Yes I can. The administrators doesn't mind systems sharing information about us because you wouldn't be able to do anything with that knowledge anyway."
"...Sounds displeasing but it's true. To make those theories work, the methods has to be possible and only entities like you have the abilities to make it possible." Luna thought about it seriously.
"Still, from what I know, you're the first who bothered to ask. No one really bothered about the details after taking us as god-like figures." BaoBao shrugged.
"Probably a force of habit. I'm used to knowing things." Luna shrugged a little as well.
"Besides, having it come in the form of a book, doesn't it look and feel nice and authentic?" BaoBao asked with a smile.
Luna touched the velvety cover of the book floating in front of her. "I admit, it does have a nice feel to it."
She looked at the gold stitching on the cover of the book. /The love of a phoenix... Interesting title./
She opened it up and read the book.
The humans of this world were shapeshifters. They could change into various different kinds of animals, including mystical beings. Over the years, people segregated themselves and lived in places that matched what they changed into. People who changed into creatures, that could live on land and in water, lived in coastal villages. People who changed into forest creatures lived in forested areas. People who changed into animals that can survive harsh territories lived around the mountains or the desert. The people who were born as mystical beings were uncommon. They could choose to leave the villages and live in solitary which was made possible by their strength.
The story centers around a girl named FengJiao who was born as a golden phoenix shapeshifter. She will find love with MengYao who was born as a dark phoenix shapeshifter. Feng Jiao lived in a village at the borders of a forest that ends at the foot of a mountain. She was friendly, strong, and righteous. All the people in the village loved her and worships her family for producing a strong protector for the village. It was common for the strong to bully the weak but Feng Jiao did not tolerate such things.
She got injured fighting a basilisk shapeshifter that lived in the mountains. As that was the basilisk home ground and it has been preying on weaker ones for a long time, FengJiao lost due to the lack of experience. She was found hiding in a corner cave of a mountain by LongFei, a dragon shapeshifter, when he was flying around. He was drawn by her beauty and eventually fell in love with her kindness. The village took them as a celestial pairing but Feng Jiao never showed any interest in him. She did not fancy his rude and high-handed way of speaking and handling matters.
She would meet MengYao on the day he attacks her village. He easily overpowered her as he grew up fighting. She only managed to defend the village thanks to LongFei's help. MengYao was severely injured this time and was saved by FengJiao who took pity on a fellow phoenix. MengYao's cold and dark personality clashed a lot with FengJiao's personality but she never stopped forgiving him because she felt sad for him, especially when Feng Jiao found out his reason for hating the weaker folk.
When he was born, the people in his village grew jealous and afraid of his power. They did not want to be ruled by a strong individual and wished to continue living freely. It was common for those born as mystical beings to act almighty. So they schemed against his family and caused their death, leaving him as the sole survivor by luck. A young nine-tailed fox shapeshifter, FenFang, was playing in the forest and came across the young him. Once he recovered, he went to exact revenge on the village and burnt it down with his black flames. He did the same for FenFang when he found out that she suffered the same fate as him. This made FenFang fall in love with him. He entered a collaborative relationship with FenFang to destroy the weak but FenFang viewed the relationship between them as something more.
FengJiao helped him interact with her village to let him experience kindness from villagers for the first time. Her actions eventually touched him and made him fall in love with her. FenFang has been receiving news about the development of the relationship between the lead couple from her most loyal but weak follower by making use of her unassuming white rabbit form. Using the intel gathered, FenFang would send her stronger followers to trouble the village which would inadvertently be troubling for FengJiao. However, they would always be defeated by FengJiao or LongFei. Eventually, when FenFang told her most loyal follower to poison FengJiao, she was found out by MengYao. At this point, MengYao was finally dedicated to protecting FengJiao and her village so he killed the both of them in the most painful way possible.
/The only side characters that appeared in this book are FenFang's lackeys. I wonder which would I be...?/
"Hopefully someone who doesn't suffer a very painful fate..." BaoBao sincerely replied to her musing. He would prefer not to watch her suffer while he remained completely helpless by her side.
Luna glanced at BaoBao's solemn expression then looked back at the book with a soft smile. "I hope so too but no matter what I get, I shall take it in my stride. I'll be relying on your assistance from time to time again, BaoBao."
BaoBao's eyes sparkled as he perked back up. "Ready anytime! Is there anything you want to read up on first?"
"Unless there are books on the history of this world, I don't think there is anything much to read up on first."
"Unfortunately, there is really none. Ready to go then?"
Luna nodded.
BaoBao gave her a friendly reminder about the pain before she got knocked out cold.
Luna woke up feeling incredibly weak. Her lips were dry. Her throat was parched. Her stomach hurt and growled at the same time. She laid crumpled on her side near a big tree. The surroundings were vibrantly green and warm sun rays filtered through the dense canopy. /Am I.../ Her stomach growled and hurt at the same time again. /Actually dying from starvation?/ Yet another sharp pain coursed through her through her stomach. /When was the last time this person ate...?/ With that, BaoBao quickly transferred all of the original soul's memories into her. The original soul was born as a white rabbit shapeshifter in a peaceful and quiet village filled with herbivores. She was named BaiXue due to her snow white fur. They have low fighting capabilities but excelled in escaping, especially when they were in their animal forms. The original soul had 4 other siblings, half of them were also rabbit shapeshifters, while the other ha
[FenFang is approaching.] BaoBao informed BaiXue. /At this time? If they were predestined to meet and FenFang was the one who nursed the original soul... I can already see how this would pan out and disrupt her revenge plans./ BaiXue frowned. /No wonder this original soul needed help./ She looked in the direction that FenFang would be coming from. Perhaps she could learn something new from FenFang that the book did not contain. So, she stayed where she was. After a short while, a young elegant beauty emerged from the plants. Her long luscious creamy white hair and sky blue robes swayed gently in the refreshing breeze. Her deep dark brown eyes immediately locked on to BaiXue. Even in her rush towards BaiXue, she looked as glamourous as ever. "What happened? How are you?" Her voice sounded like clear gentle bells. BaiXue looked at her flatly. "...Food." Her voice was weak, and she panted, as if talking itself took a lot ou
Over the next few weeks, BaiXue followed the foxes for them to show her the ropes, before she would be allowed to act on her own. They showed her the locations of various villages and the fastest routes to take. They also put her through self-defense training, but it was minimal and far below her personal standards. BaiXue was slightly taken aback by the area that was under their radar. The foxes knew of villages in the entire forest, all the way out to the coast. The nearer ones took them less than a day to reach. The furthest ones tooks days for them to reach. Still, there was no sign of the female lead's village. BaiXue wondered if it laid beyond the mountain that was on the other end of this forest. They had never tried to cross the mountains before, even though it was around FenFang's dwelling. The mountain was treacherous to cross and had stronger people living on it. The foxes did not want to take the risk for FenFang. BaiXue realised that the original s
BaiXue changed into her rabbit form to pretend to be another normal animal in the forest as the mob walked past the foliage she was hiding among. "Are you really planning to let them be?" The paranoid woman asked the man who seemed to be leading the rest. "Of course not, how can we let such a dangerous thing live and threaten our peace?" As the mob left the area, BaiXue hopped closer to the hut to check on the family. The father was trying to comfort the crying mother in his arms while the pretty baby looked at her parents with confused teary eyes. BaiXue hopped back to her camp. /It was not made clear in the book but it seems that this may be the norm for people who change into mystical creatures. MengYao and FenFang were not the exceptions. FengJiao and her village were the odd ones./ [The world's consciousness fill in all the missing details of the book to make it a complete world.] BaoBao explained w
BaiXue caught up to the family in no time then led them to her hideout. "Thank you for helping us but... Are you sure that it's safe so close to the village?" The father could not help but ask. "Sometimes the most dangerous place can be the safest place to hide at." BaiXue explained. Besides, she was confident in the spot that she chose. It was close enough to the village to be considered as a part of the village territory but far enough for people to not bother walking through. "Who are you? Why're you helping us?" The mother asked. "Someone else wanted to offer their help but could not so here I am." She did not want to reveal the existence of the writing to anyone else but did not want to lie to good-natured people, so she said it in such a way. "How long do we have to hide here for?" The father asked again. "Until someone strong arrives." She left it at that and closed her eyes to relax against a tree. Although she looked like she
She left when the moon hung high up in the sky. She ran without stopping. The moon eventually descended and the sun took its place by the time BaiXue reached the rock dwelling. While BaiXue dutifully reported all relevant information to FenFang, BaiXue caught the little changes in FenFang's expression that indicated some surprise and newfound understanding. /She knew that there was something fishy with that village. How? Why?/ BaiXue wondered to herself. "So you know where his loved ones are held at?" FenFang clarified. BiaXue nodded. "Go. Summon MengYao and save the family at the right time." BaiXue immediately took off to do as instructed without bothering to take a rest. She needed to gain FenFang's trust as quickly as possible. She wanted to hasten her trip to the mountains. After all these time, she had only found one other clue and it was at another coastal village with high rock formations. Similar
Upon reaching the mountains, she easily noticed the difference between exploring the mountains and the forest. Naturally, the animals that lived on the mountains were different from those in the forest. It was also much easier to run into animals or people living here. /The original soul could cross successfully? She must have learnt to be really stealthy from all the errands she ran for FenFang, by the time she was tasked to cross the mountain./ BaiXue commented with a slightly impressed tone. Although it might have been a problem for the original soul, it proved to be no problem for BaiXue, thanks to her speed and BaoBao's surveillance. She avoided any encounters with people or real animals and scaled the mountain easily while inspecting it. When she found nothing, she started to lure animals away from their t
[Erm... BaiXue, he's angry right? Why's he so angry at us?] /How'd I know?/ [That's LongFei, isn't it?] /He matches the description./ [He didn't sound like a grumpy man in the book!] "What were you doing in the cave for so long?" His voice was low but his tone revealed the height of his rage. BaiXue frowned. /How did he know how long she spent in the cave?/ [I was paying full attention! I really didn't see him!] BaoBao defended himself. "Shocked that I knew? Of course I would know everything that happens in my garden. I saw how you lured her out. Were you challenging her? Did you think you'd win?!" The more he talked, the more he looked like he was about to burst. BaiXue felt no obligation to reply him. The moment he unreasonably exploded at her like that, he lost the hold he had on her. So, BaiXue dashed off once she
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
