Luna woke up feeling incredibly weak. Her lips were dry. Her throat was parched. Her stomach hurt and growled at the same time. She laid crumpled on her side near a big tree. The surroundings were vibrantly green and warm sun rays filtered through the dense canopy.
/Am I.../ Her stomach growled and hurt at the same time again. /Actually dying from starvation?/ Yet another sharp pain coursed through her through her stomach. /When was the last time this person ate...?/
With that, BaoBao quickly transferred all of the original soul's memories into her.
The original soul was born as a white rabbit shapeshifter in a peaceful and quiet village filled with herbivores. She was named BaiXue due to her snow white fur. They have low fighting capabilities but excelled in escaping, especially when they were in their animal forms.
The original soul had 4 other siblings, half of them were also rabbit shapeshifters, while the other half were hare shapeshifters. The hares were naturally swifter than the rabbits but the rabbits would capitalise on their intelligence to figure out their own way to survive and not get left behind.
On the other hand, BaiXue was like the runt of the litter. She did not have the strength, smarts, or skills to save herself. No matter if it came to escaping bandits or hunting for food, she would require aid.
For such a dependent and fragile creature, her parents had hoped that she at least would grow into some beauty that could incite feelings of protectiveness from others. Unfortunately, she could not live off her looks even if she wanted to. There were many other cuter and more adorable people in the village.
In the end, she only had her oldest brother doting on her. He was the strongest and swiftest one in the family but never left her behind in the dust like the others usually did. He would wait for her and play with her. He looked after her the best and pampered her, while never forgetting to encourage her. He was the sole reason why she was still well-fed.
It was common for people in this world to grow up feeding themselves once they are old enough to do so. Her parents were considered good to have not let her starve to death. They kept her fed enough to survive and expected her to fight for her own growth and satisfaction of hunger.
Whereas her oldest brother would patiently help to coach and advice her during their hunts and debrief her after each bandit attack. Whenever she failed to catch anything for her meals for the day, which happened pretty often, he would share his catch with her. He has continued to believe in her potential. This led to the development of a very dear and close relationship.
One fateful day, when BaiXue was 15 years old and playing a little far from the house by herself, screams travelled from the village. She turned back to find fires just starting to rage. Her brother was running towards her in his hare form. She immediately understood that the village was under attack. All of a sudden, her brother maxed his speed then hurled his foot towards her. Her heart jumped and she stood rooted in fear.
THUD.
Her brother's foot struck a jaguar's head that had its teeth centimetres away from from her neck. The concussion he gave the jaguar knocked it out cold. He swiftly changed into his human form and princess-carried BaiXue off, while informing her that everyone was already making their way to the safe ground, so they had to leave too. To make it easier for her brother, BaiXue changed into her rabbit form.
The bandits turned out to be leopard, jaguar, and tiger shapeshifters. Everyone were in their animal forms. Not one human was in sight, except for her brother. This made him stick out like a sore thumb and attract attention. BaiXue was at least smart enough to know that it spelt trouble for her brother. She tried asking him a few times to change into his hare form and carry her that way but he adamantly refused. Instead, he repeatedly reassured her that everything would be alright. The speed that he was running at would make it a rough journey for her, who is being carried. If he was in his hare form, not only would he be faster, he would only be able to carry her by her neck. He pampered her too much to want to cause her that much discomfort.
In the midst of their escape, her brother had close shaves with death. Each encounter gave him another injury. These bandits were especially difficult to deal with. They were very well-coordinated. Nonetheless, BaiXue knew that he could escape unscathed if he was alone and in his hare form. So, at some point, she tried to convince him to leave her behind. However, he merely smiled warmly and kindly in response.
They eventually managed to reach their hideout where the rest of the survivors were gathered at. He gently put BaiXue down and gave her the almost completed flower garland that he had hastily shoved into his vest along with her. BaiXue's face was covered in tears. "I'm fine. There's no need to check. Please treat your injuries already...!" She begged him.
Her brother sighed in relief. To her horror, he collapsed immediately after that, in front of her.
"BIG BROTHER!!!"
The others around finally rushed to him and carried him to the doctor who was still making his way to them from treating several others' injuries. BaiXue hastily followed and could only peek through the crowd to see her brother. She was filled with panic and held the flower garland in a tight grip.
All of a sudden, halfway through the treatment, the crowd made way for her. Everyone stared at her but with mostly hostility and blame in their eyes. She shivered not knowing what was happening. Her haggard mother came into view at the other end. "Your big brother's asking for you." She looked as miserable as BaiXue but her voice was ice cold.
BaiXue immediately ran towards her brother and fell to her knees beside him. "Big brother, are you better now?"
"Sorry..." BaiXue's heart got gripped tightly by fear. "Seems like... I'll be leaving you alone..." Her heart broke. Her chest tightened and hurt. "Stay strong and don't forget everything that I have taught you. I believe in you. So, believe in yourself too." He spoke softly with a gentle smile.
BaiXue shook her head slowly in disbelief. "You have to get well. I still have this flower garland I was making for you. It's almost completed. See? You have to be here to receive it..."
His smile shone amidst the bloodied state he was in. "It's beautiful... Thank you." He slowly but steadily reached up his hand to stroke her head. She lowered her head to gently rest it against his chest.
"Please keep breathing...?" She whispered.
He felt how her body trembled from the fear of being left behind. Suddenly, their time together flashed through his mind in a mere few seconds. He remembered the day he started caring for this runt of a sister.
He was the oldest and helped to show the ropes to hunting, fighting, and escaping to all his younger siblings. Even the youngest learnt and grew quickly, while BaiXue always ended up eating their dust. One day, when he decided to look back on a whim, he saw how pale her face had looked and her body all covered in sweat, yet she never stopped trying to chase after them. It warmed his heart for some odd reason. He found it an adorable sight.
When he began paying attention to her, he also noticed how she would mutter to herself from time to time as if committing his and her parents' lessons to memory then trying to apply them in situations. She just could not seem to react fast enough to catch her hunt or build her trap sturdy enough to prevent her game from escaping.
Before he knew it, he grew a soft spot for this little sister of his.
He continued to stroke BaiXue's head and left her with this sentence, "I've noticed... and witnessed... how hard you've been... trying... The day will come... when it's your... turn to... shine... Believe... in... yourself..."
BaiXue felt and heard his breathing become increasingly shallow and slow. Tears fell from her eyes like waterfalls. She made her final promise to him with a shaky voice. "I'll live my life to make you proud. Rest in peace, my dear brother."
He died with a proud and satisfied smile on his face.
The memories afterwards were a little hazy. She roughly remembered being told that her father had died to ensure that everyone else in the family could escape and that his death was not meaningless and hearing some comments being passed around that she should have been the one to die. There were also rough images of accusing and hate-filled eyes.
BaiXue did not react to everything because she was consumed in her thoughts. /Why did big brother think my life was more valuable than his? How was I worth saving? How was I worth sacrificing for? Why?/
Eventually, just one thought and desire dominated her mind. /I have to avenge my brother and make his death meaningful too./
She clearly remembered one of the attacks that he suffered. It was particularly memorable because it caused her to tumble out of her brother's vest. While her brother struggled with a tiger, she was exposed for easy picking. Not wanting to be a burden, she tried hard to dodge other bandits, then got the idea to rapidly kick rocks and stones at them with her feet. She relentlessly kicked the floor like she was urgently digging a hole to hide in. It created so much dust and dirt in the air.
All of a sudden, her brother picked her up again and continued to run. Just before she got stuffed back in his vest, she caught sight of a roaring tiger changing into his human form, while clutching one eye. Blood flowed through his fingers uncontrollably.
After the funeral for her brother ended, BaiXue left with the intention to find that tiger who was likely left with only one eye.
She tried her utmost best to survive by herself out in the wild. She remembered everything her brother taught her and reinforced parts of her traps that her brother had previously told her were weaker. However, it still had low rates of success. She also did not have much luck with fishing as she did not have enough strength to reel it back in. Instead, she was often pulled along and into the water. The small ones somehow refused to bite down on her bait. She ended up passing most days with berries, mushrooms, and more plants.
She was not recovering as much energy as she was expending. Eventually, the day of ehr collapse came.
BaiXue laboriously pushed herself to sit up with her back against the tree. She was taking deep breaths and working to digest all the memories that had resulted in a stronger massive migraine. It also came along with strong intense emotions. Suddenly, she heard a soft whisper in the wind. /I have to avenge my brother.../
[BaiXue...?] BaoBao softly called out.
BaiXue raised her hand to touch her cheek then brought it down to look at it. It was wet. Tears continued to flow while she kept on a straight face. She remained silent like that for a long while. Just as BaoBao thought of calling out to her again, he heard her private thoughts.
/I wonder when was the last time I cried.../
BaoBao did not respond because he did not know what to say. He only knew that he felt sad. However, he did not know why either.
BaiXue closed her eyes and breathed in deeply. The original soul may be pathetically weak but her relationship with her brother and what her brother was willing to do for her strongly reminded her of Desmond.
/I promise you to avenge him./
When she opened her eyes again, her eyes shone bright with determination.
[FenFang is approaching.] BaoBao informed BaiXue. /At this time? If they were predestined to meet and FenFang was the one who nursed the original soul... I can already see how this would pan out and disrupt her revenge plans./ BaiXue frowned. /No wonder this original soul needed help./ She looked in the direction that FenFang would be coming from. Perhaps she could learn something new from FenFang that the book did not contain. So, she stayed where she was. After a short while, a young elegant beauty emerged from the plants. Her long luscious creamy white hair and sky blue robes swayed gently in the refreshing breeze. Her deep dark brown eyes immediately locked on to BaiXue. Even in her rush towards BaiXue, she looked as glamourous as ever. "What happened? How are you?" Her voice sounded like clear gentle bells. BaiXue looked at her flatly. "...Food." Her voice was weak, and she panted, as if talking itself took a lot ou
Over the next few weeks, BaiXue followed the foxes for them to show her the ropes, before she would be allowed to act on her own. They showed her the locations of various villages and the fastest routes to take. They also put her through self-defense training, but it was minimal and far below her personal standards. BaiXue was slightly taken aback by the area that was under their radar. The foxes knew of villages in the entire forest, all the way out to the coast. The nearer ones took them less than a day to reach. The furthest ones tooks days for them to reach. Still, there was no sign of the female lead's village. BaiXue wondered if it laid beyond the mountain that was on the other end of this forest. They had never tried to cross the mountains before, even though it was around FenFang's dwelling. The mountain was treacherous to cross and had stronger people living on it. The foxes did not want to take the risk for FenFang. BaiXue realised that the original s
BaiXue changed into her rabbit form to pretend to be another normal animal in the forest as the mob walked past the foliage she was hiding among. "Are you really planning to let them be?" The paranoid woman asked the man who seemed to be leading the rest. "Of course not, how can we let such a dangerous thing live and threaten our peace?" As the mob left the area, BaiXue hopped closer to the hut to check on the family. The father was trying to comfort the crying mother in his arms while the pretty baby looked at her parents with confused teary eyes. BaiXue hopped back to her camp. /It was not made clear in the book but it seems that this may be the norm for people who change into mystical creatures. MengYao and FenFang were not the exceptions. FengJiao and her village were the odd ones./ [The world's consciousness fill in all the missing details of the book to make it a complete world.] BaoBao explained w
BaiXue caught up to the family in no time then led them to her hideout. "Thank you for helping us but... Are you sure that it's safe so close to the village?" The father could not help but ask. "Sometimes the most dangerous place can be the safest place to hide at." BaiXue explained. Besides, she was confident in the spot that she chose. It was close enough to the village to be considered as a part of the village territory but far enough for people to not bother walking through. "Who are you? Why're you helping us?" The mother asked. "Someone else wanted to offer their help but could not so here I am." She did not want to reveal the existence of the writing to anyone else but did not want to lie to good-natured people, so she said it in such a way. "How long do we have to hide here for?" The father asked again. "Until someone strong arrives." She left it at that and closed her eyes to relax against a tree. Although she looked like she
She left when the moon hung high up in the sky. She ran without stopping. The moon eventually descended and the sun took its place by the time BaiXue reached the rock dwelling. While BaiXue dutifully reported all relevant information to FenFang, BaiXue caught the little changes in FenFang's expression that indicated some surprise and newfound understanding. /She knew that there was something fishy with that village. How? Why?/ BaiXue wondered to herself. "So you know where his loved ones are held at?" FenFang clarified. BiaXue nodded. "Go. Summon MengYao and save the family at the right time." BaiXue immediately took off to do as instructed without bothering to take a rest. She needed to gain FenFang's trust as quickly as possible. She wanted to hasten her trip to the mountains. After all these time, she had only found one other clue and it was at another coastal village with high rock formations. Similar
Upon reaching the mountains, she easily noticed the difference between exploring the mountains and the forest. Naturally, the animals that lived on the mountains were different from those in the forest. It was also much easier to run into animals or people living here. /The original soul could cross successfully? She must have learnt to be really stealthy from all the errands she ran for FenFang, by the time she was tasked to cross the mountain./ BaiXue commented with a slightly impressed tone. Although it might have been a problem for the original soul, it proved to be no problem for BaiXue, thanks to her speed and BaoBao's surveillance. She avoided any encounters with people or real animals and scaled the mountain easily while inspecting it. When she found nothing, she started to lure animals away from their t
[Erm... BaiXue, he's angry right? Why's he so angry at us?] /How'd I know?/ [That's LongFei, isn't it?] /He matches the description./ [He didn't sound like a grumpy man in the book!] "What were you doing in the cave for so long?" His voice was low but his tone revealed the height of his rage. BaiXue frowned. /How did he know how long she spent in the cave?/ [I was paying full attention! I really didn't see him!] BaoBao defended himself. "Shocked that I knew? Of course I would know everything that happens in my garden. I saw how you lured her out. Were you challenging her? Did you think you'd win?!" The more he talked, the more he looked like he was about to burst. BaiXue felt no obligation to reply him. The moment he unreasonably exploded at her like that, he lost the hold he had on her. So, BaiXue dashed off once she
BaiXue came out of the room after changing and found LongFei seated at a table in the middle of the spacious room. He gestured to the dishes on the table and said, "eat." "No thanks, I'd like to go back down the mountain now." "You can't." LongFei said firmly. "I know. That's why I'm asking you to bring me down." "...Eat first then." She relented and sat down at the table to have a bite. [How do you communicate with him?] BaoBao had felt insulted for BaiXue but he was surprised by how BaiXue replied as if LongFei had not just said something high-handed. After LongFei was satisfied with the amount she ate, he transformed into a dragon with a sparkly pale blue aura and let her climb onto his back. His descent was very gradual. He did not want her to feel sick. She was only fine the previous time because the all-cure herb he had fed her would also cure any issue she might have suffered from ascending too quickly.&
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
