Meghan
It's been over three months since I last saw my husband, Simon. And since then, each time I wake up in the morning, he is the first thing on my mind. Today being our third anniversary, I had little faith that just maybe he might put our long-standing differences aside to honour our day. I tapped my phone to check if I had missed any calls nor texts from him. A feeling of sadness mixed with emptiness engulfed me on seeing zero notifications from him. Maybe he had forgotten already.
Sighing, I rolled over to the other side of the bed where he usually slept. I pressed my nostrils, hoping to catch a scent of his perfume, something to remind me that the big bed used to be shared by two people. But there was nothing. Usually when Simon goes on business trips, it doesn't exceed three weeks but now it's been three months and he still hasn't taken any of my calls nor returned my texts.
Although, I learnt that he was doing well and making the Hemsworth family proud from his mother. Somewhere in my heart, I just felt this business trip was different from the others. It's been two years since our wedding, and alot has changed. At first I chalked up Simon's slight change in behaviour to the fact that I had miscarriage but later on, his attitude got worse after he lost his grandmother.
Despite all of these, I tried to be patient and understanding, but it seemed like his heart was now somewhere else.
A painful knot twisted in my chest at the possibility of that. I reached for my phone the second time as my heart thrummed against my ribcage, hoping I'd get a notification from him. Still got nothing. Then I took the step to place a call to him. I mapped out the plan quickly, I'd act cheerful like we were on good terms. Since our relationship changed for bad, I couldn't talk to him without properly thinking through my words because of fear of saying something that would annoy him.
"Meghan, is there a problem?" His speech came out clipped, almost like he was addressing a client.
"No, I just called to check on my husband." I replied, trying to act cheerful as I forced a smile he couldn't see.
"In that case, I'm alright. Anything else?" Simon asked, eager to dismiss me, his wife. It felt like I had been punched in the gut. Wasn't he at least concerned about my wellbeing? Wasn't he happy to hear my voice he said he loved so much? Ignoring his tone, I decided to put in more effort.
"Yeah, Just wanted to know how your trip is going. If you don't mind, you could tell me more about it." I replied, trying to act like his words didn't have any effect on me.
"Fine thank you. I guess that's all, I have to go right now." He responded in a dismissive tone.
"Wait, I wanted to remind you of our-" Just then the line went dead, cutting off my sentence.
It felt like I was going die already. My body froze with despair at his coldness. I couldn't belive Simon didn't care about me anymore. Maybe it's because of something I had done. I'd wait for him to get back from work so we could talk about this. Simon is my first love and I'd not allow anything come between us-
"Ma'am," I heard as one of our domestic workers knocked on the door.
I quickly wiped my tears. "Yes?"
"You have a parcel ma'am, the delivery man just dropped it off." She responded.
"A parcel?" I questioned in disbelief, I wasn't expecting anything today. The fact that Simon had acted cold towards me zeroed my chances of receiving any gift on our anniversary. What if he wanted to surprise me? The thought brought a smile to my lips.
"Let's have it, come in." I said, walking towards the door, eager.
"Madam Eleanor wants to see you too," she informed me the moment she dropped the parcel in my hands.
I stared at her blankly, the name sent shivers down my spine. Madam Eleanor was my mother-in-law, and in as much as I did everything to please her, she was always displeased by actions.
I quickly rushed downstairs to meet her. I could already feel my hands shaking as I sensed the stiff air. Her high pitched voice was already giving out orders and nagging about how things weren't done properly.
"Argh, you slimy earthworms annoy me so much with your sluggishness," She bemoaned, taking her sit on the chair as she crossed her legs.
Taking a deep breath, I walked towards her.
"Madam Eleanor-"
"Meghan, shush it. " She held up her finger with an irritated look. "Now tell me what kind of wife doesn't even lift a finger to get things done when she knows her husband will be coming home after a while?"
Taken aback, I explained. "I wasn't aware."
She regarded me with a withering look before mimicking me. "I wasn't aware," she shook her head. "Now get out!"
I flinched, before making my way to the kitchen. It wasn't the first time she was behaving like this, I had gotten used to it already. I was still determined to please her and her son for the sake of the love I had for simon. Even though I was slightly angry at the fact that Simon didn't tell me he was coming home, I still joyfully prepared his favourite dish.
"Hurry up! Simon is here already." I heard after a while and my eyes lit with joy. I quickly dished the food and brought them to the dining table.
I attempted to hug Simon out of joy but he stopped me and shook his head. "Not now I'm tired."
"Okay," I nodded and said hello to the lady sitting next to him. I didn't know Simon was bringing his friend home. She wore a red gown and her long dark hair fell on her shoulders, she was beautiful.
She stared at me from head to toe like I was nothing but I didn't mind. My husband was here and that was all that mattered.
"Meghan, serve them!" My mother-in-law ordered and I got to work.
"Mom, that's not necessary." Simon intervened and then he regarded me. "Meghan, we need to talk." His voice was firm.
My heart sped at his cold expression. I smiled. "Sure."
"Did you get my parcel?"
"Yes oh that was you? I thought as much."
"Have you signed the divorce papers?"
My eyes bulged, my hands trembling as the glass slipped off my hands, making a shattering sound as it disintegrated into tiny pieces like my heart.
"A-r-e you... being serious right now?" my lips quivered as I asked him. I hoped I didn't hear Simon correctly."I am, I'm sorry I should have said this sooner." Simon spoke, avoiding my gaze while his mother hissed. I didn't bother responding to her, she was the least of my problems."You should have said this sooner?" I asked, barely above a whisper. I knew we were going through a rocky phase but I didn't realize that we had come to this level."Yes," Simon repeated, walking closer to me. He sighed, attempting to reach for my arms but I flinched, pulling back. "Look, this has to be done. I don't feel happy in this marriage."What did he mean by not feeling happy, I had dedicated the most parts of my life trying to please him. Before he said a word to me, I'd known him and sought ways to manoeuvre my way into his life."It will be unfair to keep you here," Simon added, "Tyra is the one I love." He pointed over to the model-like lady."I don't get all of this, if you loved Tyra then w
It occurred to me that I couldn't stay in a hotel for a very long period of time because I didn't have the finances to cover the expenses. I decided to go home and tell my parents about what had happened. As I approached the house, my legs started to feel weak. My parents loved the idea of me getting married to Simon only because he is rich and from time to time they presented their needs which he covered with ease.My luggage was still at the hotel, they didn't know they had thrown me out of the Hemsworth home just yet."Mom, Dad!" I called out trying to feign excitement the moment I sat in one of the couches in the sitting room.Mom arched her brows at me, clearly surprised to see me. "You didn't tell us you were coming home, does your husband know about this?" Typical mom, always making sure Simon approved of everything I did. I know telling her that Simon had divorced me was something she wouldn't take well but it had to be done."Lilian," Dad started, "What is wrong with you, is
In the next few days at the hotel, my loneliness and poor health was crippling. Also, I was running out of cash. The few friends I had were an extension of Simon's and I couldn't reach out to them for support. I had to call Celine, my best friend, whom we haven't spoken for sometime because of an argument. I should have reached out to her before now but the thought of Simon occupied my mind.I took a deep breath as I dialed her number. She picked up at the first ring. My breath hitched, heart racing with anticipation."Meghan, I thought you weren't going to call me." Her soft voice reached my ears."I'm sorry," was all I could say. After a breather, she spoke. "Your voice, it doesn't like you're okay. I just can't place a finger on it-"I broke into a sob, instinctively wiping my eyes with my hands. "Simon divorced me." "Are you serious?" Celine questioned, clearly shocked. "Wait, where are you?"After revealing my location, she agreed to come over.-"You said you've been feeling th
Six years laterMy heart thrummed in anticipation and excitement as the host officially opened the show. With my partnership with Henry's gold firm, Frontline Gold mine, we were releasing another collection of gold jewelry. We had spent time working on the pieces making sure they carried an air of class and luxury like our customers liked. I couldn't wait to talk about how we spent time creating the pieces and how much of an amazing partner Henry is. Meeting Henry was a turning point in my life as much as he was a business partner, he is also a good friend to me and a doting uncle to my small bundle of joy, Mason."You look beautiful," Celine sitting beside me all glammed and poised, complimented me, winking at me. "Let's take a selfie, I need to show your fans what you are up to." She held up her phone in a selfie, a wide smile on her face. I chuckled, feeling grateful for her support. I wasn't a social media person so most times Celine played the role of an informant, telling me wha
