Higanbana pack, the special force of wolves dedicated to protecting the kingdom of werewolves. The pack members came from the bloodline of Fenrir, the guard of Selene. It said they were skilled in any fight in both human and werewolf form. They were the warriors that once fought the hunters and vampires that wanted to eliminate werewolves. They were the most respected pack even if their existence was purely kept hidden. Only when the king summons them do they answer in secrecy.

What made the Higanbana pack strong? It was because their blood was pure and never mixed with any other werewolf blood. They never had a mate. Moon Goddess made sure of that. For warriors like Higanbana wolves, mate was the last thing on their minds.

But for the last twenty years, Higanbana never produced male offspring even the Alpha.

And that’s why, I, Artemis Knight, the next Alpha was being paired with an outsider.

“Dad, this is unfair!” I screamed at him. “Do I not have the right to choose my pair?” I confronted my father as soon as I heard about the news.

“Little pumpkin, you are at the right age and we need a strong bloodline to continue our pack. You know we are not just a simple pack.”

I heaved a sigh.

“Dad, you do realize I’m just twenty,” I said, frustrated.

“Yes and like I said, you are at the right age. You’ll meet him later. You have to mate with him.”

Ugh. Damn.

I brushed out my long brown hair again, searching for other distractions to keep me busy. My caramel eyes were not betraying my inner turmoil. Dad has paired me with a male from the king’s side.

“You realize we might meet him today, right?” my wolf said.

“It’ll be good if we never paired at all. Damn it. Why would father go and pair me with someone I don’t even know.”

I never wanted to find a pair. Not yet. If I was honest with myself, I'd admit that I’m not ready and afraid to be rejected once my pair found his own mate. All I wanted was for him to love me for ME, not because of my rank.

I straightened her spine. With one last look at myself in the mirror, I steeled myself to walk down the staircase of the pack house. My parents were there somewhere, Alpha Ryan and Luna Michelle. She loved my father but their relationship has been strained for a while now.

Mom disagreed with several of his decisions about the pack and was vocal about it. Most of their arguments surrounded how he, and the pack, treated the females as second-class citizens. He tried using his Alpha power to make her submit but it never worked. Mom was a direct bloodline and was the strongest female Alpha warrior. She was not born as Alpha but she was amazing. I was the first female born in the Alpha family. And currently the bearer of Fenrir’s legacy.

I was treated well by everyone, but not because I was the Alpha's daughter and the next in line. I could take down every wolf in the pack. If my father allowed it, I would be the top warrior of the pack. The only wolf I hadn't beaten in a fight was my father. He refused to spar with me, no matter how much I tried to provoke him.

The main floor was crowded with all the unmated male wolves in hopes of being my pair. The aroma of many wolves reminded me of being in high school. School starts at age four for my pack and the surrounding packs because at eighteen werewolves can find their mate. Well if only my pack was blessed with mates.

"Hi baby," the voice sent chills down my spine before he came around the corner into the light spilling from the windows.

"AXELL?" The disbelief dripped from my voice. “You are my father’s chosen pair for me?”

"The one and only baby. Come hug me!" He opened his arms but I eyed him warily. Axell was an average-height male wolf at six feet one inch, lanky with dirty blond hair that always seemed to need a cut and brown eyes that always seemed cold and calculating.

Axell Black from the Blueprint pack, the beta's second son was twenty years old and a man whore. His elder brother Seth will take over as beta when his father retires in a few years. Axell hasn't made a position for himself, he trains with the warriors but he lacks the brute strength to be a warrior.

Axell had a reputation for fucking every female human who he went to school with, regardless of her age. I had she-wolf witnesses who told Alpha Ryan that Axell sexually assaulted them, raping them of the virginity saved for their mate. Without concrete 'proof' my father dismissed the claims. By the time I had been alerted the rape happened, the she-wolf had healed, leaving only testimony. And worst, I was paired with him!

“He’s unworthy of us!” my wolf growled.

“I know.”

While communicating with my wolf, I didn't notice him getting closer until I felt something on my arms where he touched me.

My wolf growled. She hated Axell. I was about to give him some of my peace of mind words until a familiar scent hit her nose, causing her to push him away.

"Why do you smell like Charlotte?" I growled at him, at my height of five-nine I didn't have to look up much.

Charlotte was my friend and a special child. Her wolf was incomplete, that's why she was human with werewolf traits. She can't shift and because of this, her ability to think was like that of a child and sometimes an old woman. I constantly look after her.

"What are you talking about?" His words spoken lightly with confusion didn't fool me.

I snarled at him, pushing him against the house, "Don't lie to me. What did you do?"

"Who is Charlotte?" He played dumb and I grabbed his throat.

“She's in the woods, Artemis. She needs us NOW!" my wolf reported me.

I pushed forward and punched Axell in the face, knocking him out, before turning towards the dark forest. I finished shifting into my true form, a black wolf with hints of blue in the sun.

I finally caught a faint trail of Charlotte's scent ten minutes into the search. My wolf could sense Cora, Charlotte's wolf but she wouldn't respond to our call. Sounds of whimpering reached my sensitive hearing and I followed the smell and sounds.

"OH, my goddess Charlotte!" I shifted back to gather my friend in my arms.

Charlotte's blonde shoulder-length hair was a tangled mess, dirt, leaves and twigs littered her normally glossy tresses. Her dress was torn away from her breasts, red scratches marring the porcelain skin. I could see bruises on Charlotte's wrists, neck and legs.

Charlotte cried into my shoulder, shaking with the force of her sobs. "I'm here now, you're safe. I'm sorry Char. I'm so sorry." My tears mixed with her friends, guilt pressing on her chest.

"You didn't do this," sniffed Charlotte, "You have nothing to feel guilty about. If I hadn't been hiding from everyone. It's not your fault," Charlotte insisted again but I knew it was, however, arguing about it now was pointless. Char needed help, not my apologies.

I picked up Charlotte, carefully arranging the ripped dress to cover her butt and her front pressed against me to hide the exposed skin.

"Don't take me to Doc Howe," Charlotte whimpered.

I suppressed a growl, "I would never subject you to that incompetent ass. He's as egotistical as my father. I've tried to get Dad to replace him for two years. He treats the female pack members like shit. I'm taking you to the human hospital."

If Dad passes me the title, I’ll reshape my pack.

I stopped my tracks as I smelt something so strong, so desiring to me that made my nose twitch. The scent had such an amazing smell… It was like a combination of citrus and yet a rainforest scent. Oh no..oh no no.. I don't have a mate! I'm not destined to have one!My wolf whimpered, begging to go close. I was confused by her statement. I shook my head. My wolf barked at me in order to hurry up. I walked through the hall, sniffing everyone that passed through me. A female nurse with strawberry hair walked past me. She seems like one of those types of nurses that are extremely exhausted seeing her darkening eye bags. She looked like she'd collapse anytime. I shrugged. In reality I didn't give a shit. This isn't my world. Human world doesn't exist in my eyes. I can't have feelings for them or interact with them. It's a part of werewolves, especially Higanbanas’.The fresh scent drove me insane. I couldn't pay attention to Charlotte anymore because my knees were shaking.“Damn it. We

“That’s absolutely no, Artemis!” Dad said in the final tone. My wolf was never submitted to anyone but when Dad became serious, she chose not to ignite fire. “But Dad, this human is my mate. My soulmate and other half,” I replied, determined to have him no matter what. “But he’s a human! We do not mingle with humans. The other pack yes, but not us. There was a reason why we can’t! What if he’s a member of Hunter? What if he’s a spy?”I started to sob. My wolf whined. “Please, Dad. Please, I’m begging you,” I said. Dad inhaled, trying to suit his wolf that was now trying to come out. Mom started to suit him, helping him to calm his wolf. “Okay,” he said after a couple of minutes, and finally his wolf calmed down. “If you really want to have your human mate, I’ll give you a chance. I’m giving you a year. You have to convince the King and the whole Higanbana. Prove them that this human mate of yours can be trusted. If he’s not, you know it means his death and you will be the one who

“Where have you been? Mary told me you filed a leave for two days,” Eliot told me when I went to work two days after staying in my apartment and pretended that I was not home. Eliot has been checking out for me for the past two days and although I was inside, I never answered his calls. He’s with his girlfriend, the girl who had been rumored to be his fiance and who was also a nurse. She was already transferred to the hospital we work at on the last day. “Oh sorry, I was with my family,” I replied, masking my pain with a smile. “Oh, okay. By the way, this is Mia, my fiance,” he proudly introduced his girlfriend to me. “Mia, this is Artemis, my best friend and the one who saved me when I was a child,” he proudly said. “Fiance? I thought-”“I’m pregnant,” Mia replied with her sweet smile. I looked at Eliot, confused as my heart broke into a million pieces. He gently took my hand, tingles exploded but I wasn’t longer happy about it. “Mia and I have been in a relationship since coll

Eliot’s Point of ViewWhen I was a child I used to believe my grandma was the best woman in my life. She was kind and gentle but I guess you would never judge a person by their outer appearance. She was the worst and she’s not even related to me. All I knew was that she was something and my mom entrusted me with her. “Eliot!” I heard her screaming out of my room. “Get up!”As soon as I heard her voice, I woke up and scrambled on the edge of my mattress, under my threadbare blanket. The scuffs on the walls were all too familiar, as was the shabbiness of the few items carefully set in their places. But as miserable as it was to look at, I'd prefer to stay in the unkempt little room than face what was outside of it.Unfortunately, I didn't have the luxury of doing that. I swung my legs down to the floor and quickly dressed. I wasn't fast enough."Eliot!" The harping screech of my name echoed from below. Not wasting time, I hurried down before she had a chance to get even angrier with m

Artemis’ Point of viewThe ride is silent, the radio softly playing as my shoulders are tense. The trees passed by quickly as my eyes glanced to the side mirror, watching Charlotte’s date driving her car as he followed in pursuit. Looking back to the road, I recrossed my legs, the atmosphere tense as I just want to be alone, in the silence, my mind empty, and my heart no longer in pain.Charlotte was driving my car, her eyes locked on the road as she seemed relaxed to me, her posture relaxed, hands on the wheel, and not in some horrible state like myself. To the world, she is free. She was not tied down to a world of emotions that eat you alive because your mate is with another. Has she found her mate? No. How do I know? When a soon-to-be Beta found her mate, they could not stop talking about him or even keep their eyes off of him, not to mention everyone would know by now. She has not found her mate, and I know she was growing impatient because everyone else was finding theirs."Do

Do I know him? Does he also work in the hospital?”“Yeah,” I replied. He started to look like he was already drunk because his eyes were always on me. “That’s sad,” Eliot commented. “Is that why I felt like you were avoiding me? Why do I need to suffer because you were hurting,” he said. I looked at him and saw that his face was already red and his eyes had become hooded

Eliot lightly brushed his hands over that special place and all I could do was close my eyes. My breath stopped at the unfamiliar touch, and then that naughty tongue of his slid from the top to the bottom of that special area causing my blood to simmer. “Eli?” I called out while fisting my hands in the sheets.“I, I can’t, I don’t know,” I began to babble as his tongue continued its ministrations.Lifting his head to me, he placed a finger along my lips.“Sshhh, let me take care of you.”I nodded my head and let it numbly fall back on the pillow as his mouth returned to my center. This time it was coupled with the first one finger and then a second. As the feelings started to build in my body I knew that something big was coming.I was reaching for something and as Eliot concentrated all of his attention with his fingers and his tongue on the center of my body the sens

My family hated me, even the hunters.I was gagged and tied up with my arms behind my back. My heart began to pound frantically in my chest at the loss of free movement. This was a whole new level of torture. I used all my strength and freed myself. Just when I thought I had finally escaped, something hit my head and consciousness split from me.I opened my eyes and cautiously looked around. I was still in the forest, although it was almost dawn judging by the light of the sky. I must have been out for hours. Eliot's Point of ViewA week ago…a week already passed since Artemis completely destroyed me. One week and the pain has completely eaten me alive. I heaved a sigh. “Well, uhh I was dumped by a woman I have loved since we were kids,” I said. “She, a… she rejected me or whatever you call it. She said she had already fallen in love with someone else.”Tears fell from my eyes. The pain is too unbearable. How could someone fall in love so deep and when dumped hurts like hell?I didn't make a single sound, and Mateo probably knew how much I was hurting. I should have rejected him before I slept with Zero last night. Why? Because I had forgotten that when you have sex with anyone not your mate, you feel pain. I put Eliot through pain last night and he has no idea how it happened. I have to reject him. It's not fair. It's not justified. What an irony.I have to reject him. I have to not only for him, but for me. For this pain. This pain will go away.I grab my phone, knowing he won't see my text for a while. Unlocking it, my fingers ache as I type away, sending the text to Eliot that should have been sent a long time ago.We need to talk. ASAP.Eliot is about to have his reality changed and i

A blush creeps up on my cheeks, my head cocking to the side as my eyes widen.Zero had playfully bitten my neck. It means something more in werewolf culture than human. It symbolizes someone's want to mate. It symbolizes someone's want to not only mate, but also claim. He wants to claim me as his. He's moving too fast. Faster than you should as a non-mate. Do I mind? A little because it scares me. It scares me how fast we are moving."Are you okay?" He asks, concerned lacing his words as I nod my head."I'm good, just zone out," I explain, offering Zero a soft smile as he nods."Let's head back to shore."Within five minutes we are back, the music loud as the group has a bonfire going. We walk up to the group, mingling with everyone as I greet people I haven't seen for what feels like ages.Green eyes. My mother watches me as I head up to my room, closing the door behind me as I don't bother to lock it. I know he's going to try and get in here anyway. He always finds a way. I can hear them downstairs, wrapping up their conversation as I plant myself into my bed, the covers thrown over my body as I enclose my body in the sheets. My hands fly to my mouth, muffling the sobs that follow as my eyes are filled with tears. I did this all because I love someone else. I did this and have yet to reject him.I can hear the footsteps, how he gets closer every second. I now wish I had locked my door, to at least feel him by two minutes and collect myself. Rolling onto my stomach, I close my eyes, my eyelashes wet as they brush against my pillow. The door opens, his scent strong as he enters the room, striding in as if he owns the place, but I know he's here because he knows I'm in a bad state now."Artemis?"I pull the covers down a tad, bunching the ends just below my nose to hide my trembling

Turning my head, I met his gentle gaze. "Why?""Why what?" Zero asks, trying not to move his mouth too much as the blood is starting to dry up."Why do that?
