On a beautiful sunny day in Dark Slayer pack, as Jolene eagerly flipped through the next few pages of her novel, she could feel her adrenaline pumping harder. She was getting close to the climax; vampire novels always had this effect on her. Except they were banned and forbidden in the werewolf world, which gave her an even greater rush while reading them.

"Jo!" she heard someone call her. "Damn it," she thought to herself as she quickly dog-eared her current page and hurriedly placed it under the pillow. She was so close to reading the climax!

Her door opened just as she stood up from her bed.

"Our alpha is going to have important guests soon, and we need to make all the necessary preparations!" exclaimed Polly, clapping her hands like a small child. Polly was Jolene’s roommate and was always excited about everything.

Polly flipped her black hair away as she shook Jolene in excitement. "And you know the warriors are returning from their base today!"

Jolene rolled her eyes. She knew Polly had a crush on Jake, a young warrior who was always being assigned to bases, much to Polly’s dismay.

"I have already arranged Gina’s wardrobe, and she told me I was done for the day," Jolene protested. Gina was the Beta’s daughter and the same age as her. Despite her terrible temper, Gina tolerated Jolene at least.

"Alpha clearly said all omegas need to help in the kitchen and cleaning the mansion. So, giddy up, make your choice: kitchen or mansion?" Polly eyed her.

"Fine, kitchen," was all she said as Polly dragged her outside.

Slap Slap

"You little bitch!" Gina yelled at Lucy as she yanked her hair. Lucy kept quiet, not fighting back at all. She had been used to years of torture at the hands of most of the pack members, especially Gina. At just eight years old, Lucy was accused of murdering her mother. Despite begging for her innocence, all evidence pointed to her as the dragger had her fingerprints. She knew now that she had been framed.

"You f**king whore! You think you are better than me, huh?" Gina continued kicking and slapping Lucy, who was now close to tears. She already had too many bruises and scars on her body; she felt any more beatings would now break her completely.

"Miss!" Jolene chimed in quickly, making Gina stop from hitting Lucy.

"What is it, Jo?" Gina asked angrily.

"The alpha thinks of you right this moment!" Jolene answered, which made Gina blush and happy at the same time. Gina immediately forgot about Lucy as she quickly made haste towards the alpha’s office.

"Let me help you," Jolene said slowly as she helped a limping Lucy stand up. She felt bad for Lucy; she was the punching bag of the pack and treated far worse than the omegas. She used to be the former beta’s daughter but now was treated like a nobody.

"Thanks, I will take it from here," Lucy’s weak voice wavered as she tried to walk on her own. She did not even walk a few steps before her wobbly knees gave away. Jolene immediately tended to Lucy’s side again and insisted that she help her.

Taking Lucy to her basement room was not really ideal. There were cockroaches and little crawling insects everywhere, and layers and layers of dust. She wondered how Lucy had been sleeping here every night.

So reluctantly, Jolene took her back to her shared room. Jolene’s motto was to stay low and out of troubles and only mind your own business. But she had to make an exception for today. Besides, it appeared that if Lucy received any more beatings, she would probably never recover.

"Thank you, I…" Lucy stammered. "No one has ever helped me before."

"Um, it’s okay. You can stay here and lay low until Gina calms down," Jolene gave her an encouraging smile. She looked at the poor girl’s torn clothes and felt bad again. So, she went to rummage through her drawers and found some decent shirts and long jogger pants.

"Here, you can change into these and rest for a while here," Jolene told Lucy, who had her eyes brimming full of gratitude. The poor girl just nodded her head. "I will cover for you in the kitchen, so no rush."

Jolene finally stepped back as she observed the beautiful feast she had prepared. Steak, cream risotto, brioche buns, freshly squeezed orange juice, and many more side dishes. The guests would be arriving any time now. As soon as Jolene was placing the glasses into the trolley, she heard a loud growl throughout the mansion. She knew this growl; it was the alpha. Alpha Jayden.

There was a commotion going outside the kitchen already as she made her way towards the small crowd gathering. There were a few whispers going around as she neared the front and saw the disaster.

Lucy was standing there with her knees shaking, looking very scared as Alpha Jayden angrily looked at her. Shit.

"You can’t be my mate!" Alpha Jayden growled angrily, making everyone in the room cower in fear.

Lucy was speechless as she just stood there. Everyone was whispering to each other, shocked at the discovery. Gina stared at Lucy dangerously, as if she wanted to murder her right this instant.

Was this bad or a blessing in disguise? Jolene thought to herself.

Because she knew she was Alpha Jayden’s true mate, and no one knew about it, not even Alpha Jayden himself.

"What in Moon Goddess' name, is this true?" Lucy asked, covering her open mouth with her hands in shock."Yes, well that could be the only plausible explanation," Jo replied. "I try my best to cover my scent in all of my clothes and everything else. But when I handed you my spare clothes earlier, I forgot to hide the scent, and I didn’t know you were going to come out so fast to the kitchen." Jo rubbed her temples in an attempt to ease the throbbing headache."But if you really are Alpha Jayden's mate, why not just tell him? Even if we are all omegas, a mate bond is sacred and above all werewolf laws," Lucy chirped happily, her blue eyes shining bright for the first time Jo had ever seen. This made Jo smile weakly."Lucy, this is much more complicated than you think, and it's better if you don't know my circumstances in depth. All I am asking for right now is that you play along and pretend to be Alpha Jayden's mate. I will give you all of my scented clothes, and you can drag this act

'What an annoying guest!', Jo thought to herself as she walked back to the kitchen. Not only does he wander off in a foreign pack alone but also insulted her cooking skills. Royal guards and generals were bursting with ego and pride as always. It's a no-brainer that she hated them with a passion. Jo finally walked back into the kitchen and saw her frustrated friend running around barking orders. 'Polly, you need to slow down a little or else you are going to make all the omegas cry with your tone', Jo calmed her friend. Polly took a deep breath as she massaged her temples with her right hand, ''I have just been told that the royal visit has been extended for a week. They were only supposed to be staying one night and now this. I have to get all the rooms ready and assign more omegas. Its total chaos. ''I am only joking, Miss Jo'', Dante voiced with a smirk playing on his handsome face. Jo was not convinced he was joking. He definitely knew something and could see past her tricks. She needed to go back to her room later and mask her scent more. Also, she had to give some to Lucy but still needed to cover the rest of her scent. This was getting riskier by the clock. Nothing was coming in between her future plans and her, she has been on the run forever and she was getting tired of it. Sometimes, she even had to sleep with one eye open because of the dangers that were always lurking in the dark for her. Jo would get through this as she always did. Now she even had a stronger reason to fight for, which was to get Lucy out of this hellhole. 'Ha-ha. Do all the werewolves from the royal kingdom have such an impeccable taste in humor because, if so, I would need to strike the royal kingdom off my places to visit'', Jo snickered her nasty comment to his amused face. As Jo led Dante to the hunting ground, the bustling noise of crowd gathering got louder and louder. Much to Jo’s dismay, Dark Slayer pack had annual traditions of hunting and killing of demon slaves. These slaves were usually caught wondering the no-man’s border. Jo knew some of these slaves were not just exiled demons but a mix of also wondering elves, half fairies, and more creatures. Alpha Jayden took great interest in killing them every year in this so called ‘traditional hunt’. And Jo had a doubt the royal King and Queen were not even aware of this hunt. The hunting ground was filled with various looking slaves in shackles, all looking defeated and tired, signs of abuse apparent with the bruises on their skin. Jo flinched a little at the sight but quickly maintained her posture. All the higher ranked officials were seated in a tent above the hunting ground, looking comfortable and enjoying the parade. Jo knew all this hunting was really a validation they needed for their strength

Jo looked around as all the participants were getting riled up for the hunt. Big built commanders, warriors and officials were stretching and looked at ease with their chosen maidens by their side. Caleb chose Gina's sister, Evelyn. She was a shy she-wolf with the similar signature blonde hair except she was smart unlike her air head mother and big sister. Jo had spoken to Evelyn on some occasions before and she was impressed at how well articulate and kind she was compared to her family. Gina was still clinging on to Alpha Jayden and it seemed like she was going to be his chosen maiden for this hunt which was not a surprise. Gina was always by Jayden's side no matter where it was, Jo wondered if she was that desperate to be the next Luna of the Dark Slayer pack. Dante obviously was still holding Jo's hand tightly and she was getting more annoyed at this dark haired general who had the audacity to assume she was willing to be his partner. If she was not hiding in this pack, she would

There was only seriousness in the air now.He took a deliberate step closer to Jo, his voice dropping to a low, grim tone. "There is something you need to understand about the demon kings, Jolene. Victor killed Hades because his madness turned to the point of no return. Hades wanted Sea kingdom's most precious weapon, and Victor had a change of heart after meeting you. However, I am now worried about what this means for Victor. The madness is a truth that haunts every ruler who sits upon the throne of the underworld."Jo’s heart quickened, her thoughts racing as she tried to grasp the gravity of Belial’s words. Victor stared at Jo dangerously. If looks could kill, Jo would be six feet deep already. Before the siren could decently cover herself in front of the crowd that was now gathering, Victor snapped his fingers, and instantly the warrior next to her started grasping for air, his hands around his neck as if something invisible was choking him, robbing him of air. 'Victor, stop', the siren pleaded for the warrior who she knew was probably a victim of Pat's evil plan. 'Fuck this Jo', the demon king mumbled. 'You care about this warrior so much?'. Jo knew it was a wrong move because the warrior's body suddenly went still. She knew he was dead, so she dared not look at the body lying next to her. Tears were welling up in her eyes, this was not how she imagined her 18th birthday to have been celebrated. Damn it. She did not even want to have a celebration in the first place. 'Everyone who dares lay their eyes on my soon-to-be bride will have it ripped out of their socket. OUT!', Victor

But now, as Victor’s words echoed through the night, Jo’s world shattered. His confession hung heavy in the air, like a curse that could never be undone. He had killed his own father—the reigning demon king— Jo’s voice trembled as she whispered, “Why, Victor? Why would you do such a thing?” His eyes, once filled with tenderness, now bore the weight of guilt. “Because I love you, Jo. More than my own life. The former King Hades had ordered me to kill the entire royal family of the sea world on the day we were supposed to be married.” Jo’s heart clenched. 'Marriage?', Lucy repeated her mate's words. Perhaps she misheard because none of this was making sense. Caleb massaged his temples and tried to maintain a calm posture. This was not like Caleb at all. He has always been the goofy type, and it felt weird to see him all so serious. 'Yes. Unfortunately, most Alphas have arranged marriages with other pack leaders to bring strong alliances, keep pure lineages, and build long-lasting relationships.
