Eighty-One

KALILA’S POV

I tried to put it out of my mind, but I couldn’t. I wasn’t mistaken, I knew that look too well because I had regaled in it so many times when I saw it in Wendy’s eyes.

“Come over here, Dahlia.” Ares called and I walked over to where his stallion stood.

They all aligned their horses in front of a red line, I knew hardly anything about horsing.

“Flag us off.” Ares said and I stared at him silently. “I mean flag the race off, Dahlia.” He pointed out gently.

Why was he so gentle with me? I thought. “I've never done it before, Ares.” I said nervously.

Wendy rolled her eyes, “You don’t learn that in school, do you?” She remarked, taking a gibe at me, I ignored her.

“Just stand in front of us and go, one, two, three.” Jeremy said hoarsely.

What was going on? Why was Jeremy’s voice harsh and Ares’s gentle? It was as if they had switched places.

I stared at him, then back at Ares, “Sure.” I stood in front of them. “Ready?”
