View MoreKillian's POV I could see the war playing out in her mind, the logic screaming up at her to shove me away, the other part of her desiring my doing the exact opposite. I smirked. Celeste hated when I smirked. Her nostrils flared. “You’re insufferable.” I nodded. “I know.” “I hate you.” I leaned closer. “No, you don’t.” Her lips opened, but no words emerged. My eyes fell to her mouth again, my eyes catching how she was breathing just a little too quick, the grip of her fingers tightened even more into the sheets. She wanted me to kiss her. I knew it. She knew it. And that was precisely why I didn’t. So I seized her wrist and flipped them pulling her onto me in one smooth motion. Celeste yelped and placed her hands on my chest as she straddled me. “What the hell…” “Seeing as how you love sneaking around so much,” I murmured as I held her closer by the waist, “maybe I ought to keep you here.” Her
Killian’s POV “Selene?” Celeste said, recovering from the shock. “I haven't seen her all day,” Celeste replied and pinched Vanessa to help her out. “Oh yes,” Vanessa chipped in. “I swear we were together all day.” I looked at Vanessa, then at me and I gulped. She was hoping I would believe her lie. I didn't see her at Selene's but I could sense her and her strong pulling scent wasn't easy to hide. I just couldn't see her. I knew Selene must have hidden her with something. I kept watching both of them. There was a pause. A three full second beat where Vanessa looked back and forth between me and Celeste like she was weighing her options and deciding whether or not she could outrun my fury. The only spoiler was that she was able to. In a performance of pure survival, Vanessa took one step back, nodded to herself and turned and disappeared. As if she had never been a true best friend. Celeste, however, remained rooted in place
Celeste’s POV Hores suddenly appeared looking shocked. He kicked the cauldron to the side of the room. Selene’s laugh was the first wild cackle that ricocheted off the walls as though she had been certified insane. The goblin, Hores, wheezed as he helped her up with tiny, clawed hands, patting the dust from her robe, his own laugh as unhinged. And then I was laughing too, somehow. Maybe it was how absurd the situation was, or maybe I had finally gone crazy. Either way, the laughter exploded out of me before I could contain it. Then, Vanessa, still dripping from her earlier water slap, exhaled slowly, shakily. She peered down at me and at Selene to the goblin, and her lips quirked. “Oh, screw it,” she muttered. Then, she joined in. For a good half-minute, we stood there cackling like lunatics after a cataclysmic near-destruction. It wasn’t even that funny. Perhaps it was that we had nearly died by kitchen explosion, or perhaps we were officially too far gone to operate as regu
Celeste's POV“Oh,” Hores said, and fetched an object from a small satchel buckled to his chest. “I also brought you what you requested.” I glanced at Vanessa. She was panting fast. “What…oh no,” she groaned. “Van, are you okay?” I asked, and she nodded slowly. I don't know why I believed her. He pulled from the air a tiny, shimmering flower, whose petals sparkled as if they had been plucked from moonlight itself. “Moonshade Blossom. Quite rare.”Selene’s eyes lit up. “Perfect! I needed this for the potion.”Vanessa and I were just frozen, had gone frozen. Did she just say potion? Selene accepted the flower with a little hum of satisfaction, totally unfazed that a literal goblin had just materialised to fork her around with rare ingredients.Hores finally faced us, and this time my ears got it. Vanessa screamed, loudly. My instincts turned on. I slapped my hand over her mouth so quickly my palm stung.“Are you trying to let the
Celeste’s POV The room was a trap closing in. Every breath, every heartbeat throbbed too loud. Killian was here. My lungs ached from holding my breath too long, but I didn’t dare move. Neither did Vanessa. We were hidden, stealthed by Selene’s spell, but Killian’s instincts were keener than magic. He could feel us. The corners of his nostrils flared, his head cocked, his narrow-eyed stare holding the space like a predator aware that its prey was just out of reach. His eyes burned with a slow, simmering rage. His voice was low, measured and deadly. “Where is she?” Selene stood there between him and us, arms crossed, enigmatic. “Who?” Killian’s attention jerked to her, a tempest of emotions brewing in his eyes. “Don’t test me, Selene.” His voice cut like a knife through the tension. “I know she’s here.” His words slithered up under my skin. My fists clenched as
Selene’s POVCeleste was unconscious on the bed, her breathing shallow and steady.I let out a long breath, distinguishing the energy that had come from the spell I'd used to mend her wounds and rejuvenate her strength; I flex my fingers a few times. There was nothing worse in Lunaris magic than the explosion I had been through. It had nearly torn her apart. Killian would have my head if anything happened to her.She wasn’t ready yet. But she would be if I pushed her hard.Lord, Malthus. She's not what I was expecting.I had brought her to my room, hidden within the depths of the estate grounds where n
Celeste’s POVLogan’s gaze darted from Vanessa to me, his jaw clenched. Something was wrong.“What is it?” Vanessa asked, moving forward. He paused for a beat, then breathed out. “Killian sent me to see how you’re doing.”Shivers of panic coursed through my chest. Did he know?I forced a casual smile. “Check on me? Why?”Logan’s expression hardened. “Because he knows you, Celeste. And he had a premonition you’d do something rash.”Vanessa and I looked at each other.
Celeste’s POVHis deep, amused voice interrupted my morning daze.“Celeste, you have five minutes, if you don’t come out, I’m coming in to bathe you myself.”I sat bolt upright in the tub, water spilling over the porcelain sides. I panicked and gripped the soap, my heart thudding against the walls of my ribs.Oh, hell no.“Don’t you dare!” I screamed, going for a towel with wet hands. From behind the door, Killian snickered. “You sure? I wouldn’t mind helping you.”My teeth were clenched, my cheeks burning. “I'm comin
Celeste’s POVThe morning light filtered gently through the thick curtains, and golden strips bounced off the walls. My body hurt in ways I hadn’t anticipated, a deep ache settling between my thighs.I had slept through for hours and it was already morning again. Every cell of my body felt heavy, and completely exhausted.I shifted, the silk sheets slipping over my bare skin, and for a moment, I lay still, absorbing the bed’s warmth.Last night replayed in my head; the heat of his skin, his body molded to mine, the way he dominated. A hot flush crept across my neck, and I buried my face in the pillow, whimpering.I needed to get up.
Celeste’s POVMoonstone Howl PackI cleaned the packhouse floor. My hands moved by themselves, sore and split from cleaning yesterday's grime for hours. My knees hurt, pushing against the tiled floor that cut into my skin. The scent of booze mixed with the faint metallic smell of old blood, the stink of this place, and all it stood for.“Hurry up, Celeste! I'm getting tired of you!” A harsh voice yelled at me from behind. That was Jared. He was the least sober in the pack and was always lazing around. “Did you hear me weirdo?” Jared asked, walking closer to me. I raised my gaze, my blood boiling as his dirty boots stained the tiles I had just scrubbed. “I told you to speed up. Don't tell me you're deaf too?” He yelled. “I'm trying my hardest,” I answered. “Try harder,” he barked, kicking the bucket of soapy water beside me. The dirty water spilled over the floor, ruining hours of work. A knot formed in my throat as I looked at the mess, but I pushed it down. “Sort it out, Twain,...
