Chapter 242

I don’t want to cry in front of Kane. Not again. I’ve caused him too much sorrow already. So I run from the apartment before I lose complete control of my emotions. I try, and fail, to put up my defences, but Kane doesn’t come after me, which I really appreciate, because I need to be alone right now.

When I reach the stairs, my legs give out, and I sink to the floor, dropping my head to my knees, I sob uncontrollably for several minutes. It's all just too much: Lester, Innocent, the dead Templars, my son...my poor little boy with his terrible burden. “Queen,” Arlene asks, and puts her hand on my shoulder. “Should I fetch the king?”

“No,” I sniff. “No, I’m fine.”

She sits next to me, as she did the night they freed me from The Templars, and puts her arm around my shoulders. “I understand. The heart of a woman…they try, bless them, but our mates are just men. How can they know what it’s like to be a she-wolf?”

I don’t answer her. Kane, I think, has a remarkable understanding of my heart
