Kane's POV

It’s a long night. Minutes after the news report aired, I start to get calls from angry Alphas and worried council members, even a few witches and a handful of other supernaturals.

Our reprieve is over.

All I had to do these last few months was to check in on our businesses, but Patrick is a fast learner, and all I need to do these days is go over contracts to sign them, or take the occasional call from a business partner who doesn’t want to deal with anyone else but me.

Facing reality is worse than I thought it would be. I became comfortable and complacent, and I fooled myself into believing that it would last forever.

Most of the night, Willow sits with me, offering little pearls of wisdom, but at some point, she drifts off to sleep again. I don’t blame her. I’d go back to sleep too if I could. I cover her with a blanket and start to make my own preparations.
