ELODIE

There was silence as soon as I finished speaking. I wanted to glance at Tedros to see his reaction, but I decided against it.

He could have asked me anything for as long as he wanted. Using the silence, I thought of a way to avoid the discussion and escape being questioned to death.

Not that I would die from his questions, but I wouldn’t be able to keep up with lies and might make mistakes with my answers. He would realize that I was lying.

“I’m glad to know you didn’t do it on purpose,” he replied, his voice still calm. “Just go to sleep. By the time you wake up, you’ll be completely healed.”

“Aren’t we going to the party anymore?” I asked, my voice low.

“No.”

“I can still go. I mean, the injury isn’t serious—just a scratch on the forehead.”

“Are you talking about the scratch that made you bleed so much? You haven’t even gotten a dress yet, and there’s no way I’m letting you leave this room until you’re healed.”
