Rylan’s POV
Silence blanketed the meeting hall the moment I entered and took my seat at the end of the long table. Uncle Dawson, one of the pack elders and my uncle, sat at the opposite end, his piercing gaze fixed on me. From the moment he arranged this meeting, I already knew what was coming. The elders exchanged uncertain glances, hesitant about who should speak first. “Can someone tell me why I’ve been summoned?” I snapped, my patience wearing thin. “Your Luna, Rylan,” Uncle Dawson said, sitting upright and lacing his fingers on the table. I knew exactly where this was headed. Leaning back in my chair, I folded my arms across my chest. “We’ve given you more than enough time to choose a Luna,” he continued. “The pack lives in constant fear of attacks when you’re away studying. We’re left to protect ourselves without leadership. You’re already 20 years old. You could…” “I’m still 19, Uncle!” I groaned, slamming my fist on the table as I stood. “Why do you keep bringing up this fucking topic? Since my parents died, have we faced any attacks? Haven’t I protected the pack well enough? Why is a Luna necessary to rule as Alpha?” “You’re not the Alpha yet, so watch how you speak to us,” one of the elders interjected. My glare shut him up instantly. “Alphahood is my birthright,” I said coldly. “No one is taking that from me because of a Luna.” “That’s enough, Rylan. Sit,” Uncle Dawson ordered. My chest heaved as I glared at their stern, manipulative faces. After a moment, I dropped back into my chair. “No Alpha has ever ruled Shadow Brook Wolves without a Luna, and it won’t start with you,” he continued. “It doesn’t matter if you find your mate or not. You must either choose a Luna from within the pack or prepare to transfer the Alphahood to someone more capable.” A smirk crept onto my lips. Their motives were as transparent as glass. I tapped my finger on the table. “And who exactly would I transfer my birthright to?” I asked, letting my gaze pierce each of theirs. “You, Uncle?” “Watch your words!” Uncle Dawson snapped. “I’m fulfilling my duty as an elder. I have no interest in the Alphahood.” “Then him?” I pointed angrily at Beta Beckett, who flinched, his eyes darting to my uncle. “Weakling,” I sneered, rising from my seat. “Just know I’ll be appointing a better Beta when the time comes. I will find my mate. I don’t need to choose a random Luna.” I turned to leave, but Uncle Dawson’s words stopped me. “Your 20th birthday, Rylan. If you don’t find your mate by then, you’ll have no choice but to pick a Luna or give up your title.” I slammed the door to my room, growling as I punched the wall. My knuckles bled, but the physical pain didn’t compare to their words. Why didn’t I find my mate at 16? If I had, none of this would be happening. “Hey, what are you doing, Alpha?” Tiffany rushed in, trying to calm me. “Why are you so angry?” “Why wouldn’t I be?” I groaned, kicking a vase off the floor and shattering it. “Is it my dad again? What did he say this time?” she asked, guiding me to sit on the bed. “What else? He’s just good at pissing me off,” I muttered, collapsing onto the bed. She frowned, her expression softening. “Why are they pressuring you so much? It’s not like you’ve passed all stages of finding your mate. She could be out there, maybe even looking for you.” “That’s not the issue anymore,” I said, sitting up. “It’s not just about finding my mate. The pack needs someone to stand in for me, someone to protect them when I’m away. They need a Luna, yes, but also a leader who can fight for them, mate or not.” “But your happiness matters. If you choose someone random and then find your fated mate, that’ll be a disaster, don’t you think?” “I don’t even know what I think anymore.” I stood and walked to the closet. “ Being Alpha means sacrificing your happiness—sometimes even your life—for the pack.” “Where are you going now?” she asked, picking up her phone from the vanity table. “I need some fresh air.” “Can I come?” “No. Your dad might look for you, and I won’t answer to him tonight,” I said, heading to the bathroom to change. When I came out, she was still on the bed, scrolling through her phone and giggling. “Tiffster?” I called. She looked up. “Did that girl really try to cut your hair?” I asked. Her phone slipped from her hand, hitting the floor. “What kind of question is that, Alpha? Look at my hair!” She turned to show me her hairline. “Just trims,” I said, moving closer. “You practically chopped off her hair. She barely touched yours.” Her eyes narrowed, and her grip tightened on her phone. “Is that what you think? She tried to hurt me! Your concern should be my safety, not her hair.” “Fine. Just don’t let me find out you started the fight. If you did, you’ll lose all your hair,” I said, walking out and shutting the door. “You wouldn’t dare!” she shouted as I strode down the corridor. At a bar in the city, someone brushed past me. Her heartbeat thundered in my ears. I spun around to look, but she’d already vanished into the night. “Hey, Rylan. We meet again.”Maya’s POVThat bloody bastard! I knew he was up to something, but I kept going back to him anyway. “You sold me out again, Schmuck!” I yelled, trying to kick Stephen between the legs as he yanked me off the floor.“He offered a mouthwatering reward, Maya. I couldn’t say no to that,” he said, dragging me toward the man who had apparently gone to book a room—to have his way with me. All for money.“You’re the most despicable, useless person I’ve ever met,” I spat, spitting in his face.“Don’t worry, pip-squeak. I’ll tell him to go easy on you,” he smirked.“Mom?” My head snapped in a direction. Stephen immediately let go of me, and I fell onto my back. My heart pounded in my chest as I scrambled to my feet.“Where the hell is your mom?” he demanded, scanning the crowd.“Fuck you!” I cursed, bolting away.“Cunning little freak! Get back here!” he yelled, chasing after me. I sprinted through the crowd, crashing into someone at the entrance before slipping into the darkness outside.Crouc
Maya’s POV“Rylan, please!” I begged, my body growing hot, my hands clutching the edge of the seat as sweat dripped down my temple. My eyes were fixed on his.“Stop running your mouth around me. Do you understand?” he warned. I nodded, and he finally looked away. Whatever invisible force had bound us snapped, freeing me from his irresistible gaze. Even so, my heartbeat quickened, and my breaths came shallow. What the hell had just happened?“What’s your name?” he asked calmly.I narrowed my eyes on him. He acted like a two-faced coin: perfect one moment, villainous the next.“Maya,” I said, my voice barely audible.“How did you know my name?”“That vixen called your name the other time,” I replied. “And I won’t let you or her go scot-free for what you did to my hair. You’ll pay dearly…” His hostile glare shut me up immediately.“Which direction?” he asked.“This way,” I muttered, pointing to the left. When we arrived at my mom’s house, she was standing outside with Annabel, my little
Rylan’s POVAs I finished dressing and picked up my phone to leave, there was a knock on the door.“Yeah, come in,” I said, assuming it was Tiffany. But when I turned, my eyes narrowed at the unfamiliar woman standing there. She tossed her hair over her shoulder and gave a bright, toothy smile, though it seemed forced and insincere.“Did you miss your way?” I asked, my tone sharp.“Certainly not,” she replied, her voice soft and sultry as she closed the distance between us. “I know exactly where I came,” she whispered, her fingers lightly grazing my arm.“Personal space,” I said, gripping her hand and pushing her back. “Who the hell are you, and how did you get here?” My patience was wearing thin.“I sent her,” Uncle Dawson said, walking into my room. “There are more of them in the waiting hall.”I frowned. “I don’t understand. More women? What’s the occasion?”“Your Luna choosing festival. Since you spend most of your time studying and training, I decided to bring some women to enter
Rylan's POV“Alpha?” Tiffany called, stopping abruptly and covering her mouth with her hand. My gaze shifted to her as she made a guilty face and mouthed, “I’m sorry.”“Alpha?” Maya chuckled, stepping away from me and wiping her tears. “Both of you are delusional losers,” she mocked, heading off.“How dare you?” Tiffany groaned, her fists clenched as she tried to lunge at Maya, who turned to face her instantly.“Hey, watch it!” another girl interjected, stepping between Maya and Tiffany. “You only got your way with her last time because I wasn’t there. Try it again, and you’ll leave this campus with a bald head,” the girl threatened, meeting Tiffany’s hard glare.“Can you believe this, Rylan?” Tiffany cried, turning to me for support.“Let her go,” I said, my eyes locked on Maya, who was now hiding behind her defender.“You can’t do anything, douchebags. It’s two against two,” Maya taunted. Her defender shot her a warning glance, and she instantly fell silent.Shaking my head, I grabb
Maya’s POVThe alley was dark, and the air was cold as I pulled my coat tighter around me. My heartbeat raced, my lips trembled, but my feet kept moving, leading me toward the shadowy figure ahead. A part of me whispered that he was the one, the man I had been searching for my entire life.Suddenly, a strong scent filled my nostrils, accompanied by the sound of boots behind me. My breath hitched as I spun around. A tall, ominous man stood there, his face hidden behind a black mask and a hoodie pulled low over his head.I glanced over my shoulder. The shadow I had been following had stopped, giving me a chance to catch up. Yet the masked man’s scent lingered, pulling me toward him with an irresistible force.“Stop,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sudden gust of wind. The man reached for the edge of his mask as if to reveal his face. She bullied me.”“What? That’s not…” I started, but before I could finish, a hard, metal-like hand connected with my cheek, sending me crashing to the floor. The sharp sting spread across my face, leaving my body trembling from the impact.“How dare you!” he roared, his fists clenched tightly as he loomed over me like a storm cloud.“She ruined my hair!” Tiffany’s wail cut through the air, her voice full of false anguish. The man grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, slamming me against the wall. My breath caught as his hand circled around my throat. His forest-green eyes burned with an otherworldly intensity that froze me in terror.“Let… let go,” I whispered, choking on the words.“You have no right,” he thundered. “No one has the right to lay a finger on her!”“Hold her tight, Rylan!”
