Agatha’s POV

That surprised me.

I thought I’d have to beg the supreme alpha before he gives me a chance. I thought I’d have to convince him hard. After all, we are talking about an alpha’s heir here.

Still on my knees, I looked up to stare at the man who unexpectedly saved me from my doom. The moment Alpha Roger’s men laid their hands on me, I imagined myself in front of my whole pack’s angry eyes – the sight I will last see before dying. I was so sure I’d be pushed to the fate I was trying so hard to escape.

And then he came.

His midnight blue eyes were menacing. Almost soulless. The way he looked at me sent shivers all over my skin. And for some reason… I sensed a strange familiarity in his eyes. It was like he knew me somehow.

But I know that can’t be the case. I’m weak in almost all aspects as a werewolf, but my memory has never failed me. I’m sure I’ve never met him before. If I’d see such dark and dangerous eyes, I don’t think I’d ever forget it. Not to mention, the man is quite a looker. So it’s hard to not notice him.

“She’d stay here in the first district as my prisoner while the investigation takes place.”

“This is my son’s case, Supreme Alpha. I think it’s more appropriate for me to bring her back to our district. Besides, I know you are dealing with a lot of things. Let me spare you the trouble,” Alpha Roger contested.

“I insist. This is an important matter, so I should get to the bottom of this myself. Don’t worry, Alpha Roger, I’ll make sure to serve the justice your son deserves,” Supreme Alpha offered a gentle smile but his eyes held no gentleness.

Alpha Roger held back himself. I sensed how he wanted to say more, but under the Supreme Alpha’s cruel gaze, he couldn’t open his mouth. He knows better than to say words that would put him six feet belowground.

“Orion, bring the girl to the car.”

“Yes, my lord.”

The lean man in a black suit and tie helped me stand. He held my elbow while my hands were on my back, still cuffed. Alpha Roger looked at me sharply as he tried to convince the Supreme Alpha that it’s better for him to handle the situation, but the Supreme Alpha’s decision seemed to be final. He doesn’t look like a man who takes back his word easily.

At the end, my stepfather wasn’t able to do anything to change Alpha Rowan’s mind. I can sense their stares at my back as I’m guided outside the station, and they are probably thinking of many ways to kill me. It didn’t give me comfort, but somehow, walking out of death, it rekindled that small hope in me. I was a little relieved.

“At the back seat, Orion,” Alpha Rowan interrupted when the man named Orion opened the front seat to let me in.

“But sir, you don’t want anyone sitting beside-“

“Did you not hear me?”

“Of course, I heard you, my lord,” Orion smiled nervously.

“Uncuff her,” Alpha Rowan gave Orion a key before getting inside the car first.

Orion looked stunned. I was shocked too. I thought I’d be uncuffed when I’m already put in wherever prison they’d bring me. Prisoners, even suspects whose crimes are yet to be proven, have always been treated poorly by most people. Especially by those in power. Which is the reason why I can’t believe the Supreme Alpha is uncuffing me. And wait, he’d also allow me to be in the same space with him, in his car, beside him specifically.

Perhaps, am I walking into a death trap?

There’s a question in Orion’s face but he dared not ask his master. He just uncuffed me and let me go inside the car.

The manly scent and expensive perfume attacked my nose the moment I went in. There isn’t much space inside, but a certain distance still remained between me and Alpha Rowan. I didn’t dare look at him blatantly and settled my gaze in front, even when I could sense his eyes on me.

“How old are you?” I didn’t expect that would be his first question.

“Nineteen, my lord,” I answered. My eyes are on my lap where my hands are. I curled my fingers down when I noticed they are marked with a bit of dirt.

“Hmm…” he sounds like he’s thinking. It made me nervous for no apparent reason.

The Supreme Alpha is my last card, but I can’t be sure that this really will save me. His presence gives me chills. I don’t know if it’s because he holds great power, or if it’s my instinct telling me that he’s someone very dangerous. Someone I shouldn’t be missing with.

“What a little poor thing you are, so young and weak,” in contrast to his words, there’s no pity in his tone. There’s only mockery.

“To the mansion, Orion.”

“Shouldn’t we go to the district’s jail, my lord?”

I lifted my gaze and caught Orion’s glance from the rearview mirror. The confusion in his eyes mirrored mine. I also thought Alpha Rowan intended to bring me to the district jail since he will retain me here as a prisoner.

“She’s a big suspect. She’d stay in my estate as my personal prisoner. I want to watch her myself.”

Now I can’t help but look at the Supreme Alpha. He raised his eyebrow when he noticed my gaze.

“What? You want to be in the district jail instead?” He challenged.

I didn’t answer. I’m confused.

“If you’re really not your brother’s killer, the real culprit will try every means to get rid of you. My house is the safest place where you can be. Not that I care for your well-being, but this is a big murder case. As the supreme alpha, I want to get to the bottom of this. Isn’t that what you also want?”

Yes. That’s what I want. The truth that will set me free and give justice to James’ death.

But looking at this man this close, I can’t help but ask.

Is really staying beside him the safest place I can be? Because the truth is… I have doubts. The darkness in his eyes reminds me of a place I’ve been running from all this time. It reminds me of my nightmares… and my fears.
