Elaine’s POV

I was lying in bed, the dim light of the bedside lamp casting a soft glow around the room. My thoughts were a jumbled mess, swirling around the events of the past few days. Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, the door creaked open, and I saw Killian step into the room.

He stood there for a moment, watching me with an expression I couldn't quite read. Then, to my surprise, he smiled—a genuine, warm smile that seemed out of place considering everything that had happened.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to make of it, before cautiously returning the gesture with a small, tentative smile of my own.

"Why are you smiling like that?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, the confusion evident in my tone.

Killian walked closer, his movements slow and deliberate. "Just wanted to check on you," he said softly, his eyes never leaving mine. "Make sure you're settling in okay."
