Training had become my main focus for the month after my two-week sabbatical from life. I trained in the morning one on one with Reid, my Beta and John Langille, our head warrior, and head trainer. Both of them ensuring I was in peak fighting condition. I loved training with them – they never held back. They weren’t afraid I would break and understood the only way I could protect myself was by fighting me with everything they had.
The balance in power and ability was tight. Some fights I won, some I lost. When I lost, we went over the same scenarios until I got them down and won. Losing was not acceptable to me. I needed to be the strongest warrior so I could protect everyone within my pack. I also had to know I could rely on my top people to have my back when needed. Reid and John had my back and that was what was important to me.
Some mornings Lily joined us. Not a slouch herself she could fight – she was a Beta’s daughter after all. She could protect herself but did not have the ambition I did to continue my training. Lily trained daily with the rest of the pack – training led by Reid, John, and myself, unless something else had my attention.
Today was one of those day’s where I had to join my father for a meeting. Things were still tense between us but as always, I would not shirk my responsibilities because of the friction felt between us.
We were meeting on a new alliance. A new one but not a new one – one that had been left on the table shortly after the rejection. That’s all I can refer to it as for the time being – the rejection impacted my life in a ridiculous manner. Life before the rejection held a lot of promise and after the rejection resulted in barriers I had not expected to face.
Kind of funny really; rejection itself should not the end of the world but to a werewolf and being rejected by a mate, the severity was that you never knew if the Moon Goddess would grant you the blessing of a second chance mate. They were rare, and in some circumstances, such as the death of a mate, it would seem fair to issue a second chance. Is a second chance warranted when the mate simply did not want to be burdened with a strong partner?
And if you do not find that second chance mate – do you take the chance on a chosen mate? I knew of rare occasions where someone took a chosen mate and things worked out, but the passion was never the same intensity experienced by a bonded pair.
Regardless those were worries for another day. I had not allowed myself to consider those scenarios for over a month. My current goals were to keep my feelings buried and get through what was now four and a half months to assume my role as Alpha to the pack.
Coming to the conference room, I was surprised that the door was closed. I had thought it was going to be my father and I discussing the alliance between ourselves, and hoped this was not going to be a situation where I would be joining people unexpectedly once again.
As I raised my hand to knock on the door it opened simultaneously with me wrapping my knuckles on the chest of a very good-looking man. With dark and wavy shoulder length hair, muscles that bulged in his black t-shirt and jeans carrying a black leather jacket and motorcycle helmet. Murmuring excuse me, I stepped back as the man moved forward looking back at my father, “I’ll look forward to hearing from you Alpha Jacobs.”. With that he nodded to me with a slight smile and moved down the hallway towards the front doors.
I turned to look at my father with a questioning look, to which he waved his hand and said the discussion was for another time. Today we were looking at the alliance with the Red Moon Pack. It had been put on the backburner after the rejection. My father had not felt comfortable moving forward at the time.
As we sat down, I had already reviewed the documents that had been drafted by our lawyers. I had a few questions as to what level of manpower commitment were we making during a crisis. We could not leave ourselves shorthanded in the event it was seen as an opportunity to attack us while our warriors were engaged elsewhere. Red Moon Pack was only a couple hours away and the alliance made sense. It would make us the largest pack with the largest number of allies. Not kidding ourselves, it was an alliance that would help Red Moon Pack more than us. But not one to take for granted.
As we debated the pros and cons, we finally concluded that the alliance should go through with some amendments to our agreement. Jotting down the changes, I would prepare the email to our lawyer to make the adjustments before we would agree to moving forward. Once he made the changes and the Red Moon Pack agreed to them, we would aim to do an official signing of the alliance in the not-too-distant future.
As we concluded my father tried to engage in conversation with me, asking me “How have you been Kate?”. Thinking to myself how tired of that question I was, I told him, “I am fine. Working hard at training, I’ve started my online business degree with a goal of completing within two years versus four years.” My father nodded approvingly, “You are quite ambitious Kate – will you have time for studies and being Alpha?”.
Feeling a sense of uneasiness at the odd question, I turned to my father giving him my full attention, “There is nothing I cannot do when I set my mind to it, isn’t that what you have always said? I am 18 years old, I am a pack doctor, a warrior, graduated high school at 15 and will be Alpha of this pack in four and a half months. I am more than able to handle the various tasks at hand.”.
Sighing and recognizing the fierce commitment in my eyes to succeed my father simply nodded, smiled, and thanked me for working on the alliance documents with him.
I was still left a little unsettled and wondered once again who the man who visited earlier was and what business he had with my father.
Kate POV “Katie let’s do an adult girls’ night,” Lily says. Pausing to wonder what exactly that means Lily continues, “You know – adult refreshments at an adult party location? Maybe in town at the Club?”. The “Club” is a hot spot for a lot of locals as well as people from neighboring towns. Mostly people in their 20’s and 30’s frequent the club, but it’s been known to attract a diverse group of people. They have great music, great dance floor, and cater their selection of alcohol to werewolves as well as to humans. The humans do not know that we exist, but the Club is owned and operated by werewolves. We can scent our own kind in any environment and it is no
Katy’s POV As werewolves, we were also recognized at the door as VIP’s when we went to the Club. Which was awesome as there was always a line up waiting to get in. Listening to the groans as we went around the line, we smiled to the Bouncer, who we had knew from our Pack, and walked on in. The place was crowded tonight. There were a lot of people on the dance floor. The music was thumping, perfect for dancing and the bar had a slight line up. Looking at the crowd dancing, and the bar, we all agreed to head up to the bar first. As we got there, it turned out not to be as crowded as we had thought and were able to get our drinks right away. Looking around we found a table toward the back, where we could see everything but also catch up or head to the dance fl
Drake’s POV After wrapping up my late meeting with Kate’s father, I happened to see Kate and her friends climbing into a car and heading into town. I admit she intrigued me when I had bumped into her earlier coming out of her father’s office. Her eyes were captivating, and she was downright beautiful. I had heard she had been rejected by her mate, but I was impressed with how well she was handling things. And, like many, shocked she had been rejected. She came across as a confident young woman. I had heard of Kate at various tables and had met her father a few months back at another joint meeting. Being an Alpha was a privilege but being an Alpha without a Pack to lead, was challenging and often frustrating. I had joined the Blue Moon Pack as a child
Kate POV Getting in pretty late last night, I can’t help my curiosity surrounding the man named Drake. He was good looking, confident and there were some questions around what his dealings were with my father. I enjoyed a couple dreams about the mystery man, his hands on my body and us swaying to the music. However, Saturday morning came to quickly. Dragging my butt when I did finally crawl out of bed, I make my training session for 9 am. I always spar and train with my Beta, Reid, and the Head Warrior / Head Trainer John. However, with John on vacation it would just be Reid and myself this morning. Although I had been out late the night before, it did not take long to get into the swing of fighting
Drake’s POV I had made my way home on my motorbike and arrived home shortly after three in the morning. Blue Moon Pack was roughly an hour or so from Golden Moon Pack. Not too far but far enough to warrant doing business with them. I lived in the Pack house along with a lot of the single, unmated members. My room was on the third floor – as an Alpha I had a higher standing in the Pack; however, would never be assuming the role of the Alpha for the Blue Moon Pack. My room was spacious, with its own bathroom, sitting area, workspace, and separate bedroom. Grabbing a quick shower, my thoughts lingered on my meetings today and the end of my evening. Drying off, I walk naked to my bed, turning off the light as I go.I was exhausted yet meeting Kate had piqued my curiosity.&n
Kate POV As we wrapped up the day of training around 3 pm, I had to decide what I was going to do with my father. I did not want to keep dragging this up, but to consider moving Reid to Beta before me going to Alpha was wrong and unprecedented in most packs. As I pondered what to do, I grabbed my stuff up, starting to walk out the door of the training centre. I waved goodbye to some stragglers as I went out. The day was beautiful. I had almost missed it with the intensity of the training today. We had a couple groups do double training shifts on Saturdays as they had more time available for training at that time than they did through the work week. During the week many worked and could not dedicate as much
Kate POV I was exhausted. We had three rogue attacks in the past three weeks. We had minimal casualties thanks to our aggressive training regimen. However, we were also cautious. The number of rogues coming to break through our barriers were increasing. We had stopped them just as they crossed, a couple escaped our warriors by not crossing the border as they saw what was happening to the other rogue wolves. those we caught were destroyed. With the exception of one rogue per group – we kept them for interrogation. This had always been our strategy, to learn what we could from the captured rogue. It often included torture as they were quite committed to their missions. After three rogues were captured during various attacks, interrogated, and destroyed we were no further ahead in under
Kate POV “I beg your pardon?” asking my father in shock. We had talked about Drake, and he never indicated there was a discussion of an alliance. In fact, I assumed his connection was a minor annoyance. Never could I have anticipated this. “Reid, John – would you mind giving us some privacy? Kate and I have some things to discuss,” Alpha Jackson requested of both men. Standing and nodding both men looked at me before nodding to Alpha Jackson as they left the room. Standing I walked over to the window and looked out at the overcast skies. We did not typically get a lot of rain, but when we did it stayed for a few days. It made tracking a challenge as all the scents you would usuall
Kate POV We caught an early flight out to get back to the Pack by early afternoon. I had a hairstylist and makeup artist waiting to do hair and makeup for my mom, me and of course Amelie wouldn’t be left out. We had a gorgeous dress picked out for Amelie – she will look like a princess. I haven’t seen my mom’s dress yet, but I know it will be appropriate for the occasion. While we were home, I had bought a new dress for the occasion. As is the case with ceremonies the Luna traditionally wears a long gown. I decided to go with white for the Luna ceremony. A white gown with a slit up my right leg to mid-thigh. There was gold trim on the dress around the waist and the neckline. The front was up to the neck while the back was open to the waist. And of course, I’d top it off with black h
Kate POV The alliance meeting had gone very well. Once Alpha Drew got past all the Boyd crap, and the fact that I was still going to be a co-Alpha to my Pack, he was on board. It sweetened the deal that we were joining our alliance with the larger alliance of Colby’s Pack. Everyone was quite excited about the opportunity this alliance would provide. It was agreed that every Pack in the alliance would meet with their own smaller Packs within their alliances to ensure they followed the rules of the Silver Crescent Pack. Failure to do so could result in either the smaller Pack member being removed from the alliance, or the Pack in the alliance of six could be removed. Needless to say, nobody wanted to be removed. Where this was a sh
Kate POV The morning came quickly. My mom has taken Amelie off on a girl’s trip for the day knowing that we would be swamped today with Pack business. As they head off, we wave to Amelie who is waving in the window. I can only imagine the things Amelie will come home with today to take back. We may need to get a separate plane to bring her things home. As I am just about to turn back into the Pack house, I hear a motorbike coming up the road. I pause for a moment; surprised Drake is so early. Then I realize in his shoes I’d probably be doing the same thing. I don’t want him taking over my meeting before I have it. I wait for him to run up the stairs uncertain what to do. Hugging does not feel c
Kate POV Waking in Colby’s arms every morning this past week in the place I would soon call home, was amazing. We had breakfast with Amelie daily before she went to school. I was on my way home, with Amelie and Colby, to try to wrap up some pressing details around the move I was making. And to bring home some additional things I wanted to have with me. I had conducted a lot of video chats with Beta Reid and Gamma John throughout the week. I would check in on the Pack activities and resolving some challenges daily with the three of us. We went over training plans for our warriors, and they kept me up to date on any issues with the border patrol. This week was a calm week. Both Reid and John were happy for me that I had decided to
Colby POV I was a little anxious thinking Kate had made a decision about the future. I know she was happy with Amelie, now that we had gotten everything straightened out. I was thankful to the Moon Goddess that I had got there in time to help her deal with the wolves. I have no doubt Kate would have fought them off, but not being able to shift would have made it that much harder. And because she had to deal with that situation as a result of my own Pack member, caused me immense guilt. I don’t know what I would have done if Kate had been seriously hurt or worse. If I could, I would kill Jessica again for what she did. As I sit in my room, I can hear the giggles from Kate and Amelie from down the hall. Deciding to head
Colby POV As I’m sitting there with my parents Amelie comes running in the door, tears on her face and so winded and upset she can’t get her words out. Wondering where Kate is, I try to get her to calm down, and help her breathe. She must have run quite a distance and been frightened to be reacting this way. As she starts to calm down, she puts her head in my neck saying she’s sorry. I’m so confused I don’t know what to make of it. I take her arms in my hands and gently pull her out of my neck. “Amelie, what are you sorry for?” I ask. With tears streaming down her face, I wipe her cheeks. “I took Kate in the woods,”; “Okay where is Kate now?” I ask. “She’s in the woods,” she replies. “Is she hurt
Kate’s POV Shocked I feel like I got kicked in the gut. Why would she even think about Jessica? I thought her and Colby were a passing fling. I didn’t realize Jessica had been part of Colby’s life and in turn Amelie’s life. Looking at Colby, he shakes his head, not clear what is happening. As Colby’s parents hear this, they move forward to welcome me, with both his mother and father hugging me in acceptance. As Colby stands there in discomfort, I start to look away from him. I’m not clear what I walked into, but this was not what I expected the first time I met his family. Colby puts Amelie down and she runs off just in time for me to see Jessica smirking before anyone else saw her. Reaching her hand down to Amelie, she takes her along to play, I assume.
Kate POV “Promise me you will call me, if you need something, Reid?” I ask for the hundredth time. “Yes Kate, we will be fine for a few days without you,” he says. “And we’ll video chat every day?” I ask. “Yes Kate, same time every day, we’ll video chat,” he says a little too condescending for my liking, but I let it go. I’m incredibly panicked. This is the first time I’ve left my Pack for any amount of time that wasn’t related to a crisis of some sort. I’m going home with Colby. I can’t wait to see his Pack, meet his family, and especially meet Amelie. I have some gifts for her, that Colby helped me pick out. A purple elephant – she collects elephants, and she loves the color purple.
Colby POV It had been three weeks, and nothing had changed. I had to get back to my Pack, but I didn’t want to leave Kate. I knew from her doctor they were just waiting for her to come out of the coma. The mood around her Pack had been somber. Everyone was waiting. What everyone didn’t know yet was that Kate’s leg had some damage that had not repaired itself yet. It had to be reset when she finally made it to the Pack hospital. The doctor was hopeful her wolf will be able to heal it once they both come out of the coma, but it was hard to say what would happen. I knew if Kate lost the ability to shift, she would be devastated. But for me, her being alive is the only thing that matters. As
