“Maia, if you’re not walking out the front door with me in five minutes then I’m leaving you behind!” Adrian yelled from the other side of our apartment.

“The one time we’re running behind instead of him” Celeste grumbled in my head.

I had been paired with my wolf, Celeste, when I turned 15 years old. As most werewolves complete their first shift when they’re around 12, I was quite the late bloomer, and had doubts that I even had a wolf. My first shift was challenging, usually you’re guided through it by your parents, but I was completely alone and had no one but the new stranger in my head offering words of encouragement.

For a while, my mind felt nauseatingly crowded. I struggled to adjust to having a companion who was always there, when I was so used to living life in complete solitary. Eventually, over time, I grew to love Celeste’s company, and now simply couldn’t picture my life without her.

I took one final glance in the mirror, at the blue eyes staring back at me. They were piercing, in a startling way, with a grey ring the colour of storm clouds surrounding an icy blue centre. My painted plump lips tugged up at the corners, content with the simple look I’d gone for. Makeup had never really become my thing, years living in wilderness as a rogue will do that to a girl, so I settled for some mascara and nude lipstick one of the girls from work had loaned me for this weekend. My hair, the colour of rich dark chocolate, fell in effortless natural waves to my waist.

“Coming!” I called as I clip-clopped down the hallway in my thrifted heels.

“Finally.” Adrian rolled his eyes sarcastically as he looked me up and down. The sky blue satin number I was wearing was his idea, it complimented my eyes well, but his motivation no doubt had something to do with the way the dress hugged every dip and curve my athletic body harboured.

Adrian walked out of the front door and I followed behind, clutching my purse in one hand and holding his in the other. As we walked I took in what he was wearing for his 21st birthday bash. Black jeans which hugged his long lean legs, paired with pointed boots and a tan polo shirt which appeared a size too small, which he no doubt did on purpose. Adrian was boyishly good looking, with lightly tanned skin, dirty blonde hair and a square jaw that didn’t have any chisel to it yet. He was tall, easily over six foot which often left me level with his chest, and his slender figure looked like it had only recently started putting on muscle. In the six months I’d known him I had never seen any evidence of facial hair, which led me to believe he couldn’t quite grow it yet. He was average, in a nice way. His eyes were his one stand out quality, they were a vibrant forest green, gleaming with a playfulness that captured me from the beginning.

“So…what did you get me?” Adrian turned around to look at me with a cheeky grin.

“Babe, I’m an 18 year old on minimum wage, so I’m sorry to say you’re only present is my exquisite company tonight.” I giggled as he clutched his chest with a pained look, before a light-hearted smile took its place.

“You know I’m joking. If all I get tonight is to be with you, then I’ll be a happy man.” I hugged him closer and leaned into his side as we continued walking to the local club.

Werewolves didn’t form mate bonds with humans, so I knew Adrian couldn’t be my mate, but I’d long ago accepted that I’d never get to meet my destined half. My nomadic lifestyle ensured that. I moved from town to town every couple of months, long enough to earn some under-the-table cash but not so long that the humans questioned why I didn’t have parents, or go to school, or identification. My current residence had been the longest one yet, just over seven months, thanks to Adrian. He was easy, fun, carefree…like a summer night on an empty beach.

We arrived at the club at midnight and were directed to Adrian’s birthday booth, located on the top floor next to the DJ set. By this time, the club was packed. We made our way through the dancing, sweaty bodies, guided by the multitude of coloured strobe lights to finally reach our table.

“Happy Birthday!” A handful of Adrian’s friends shouted over the speakers as shots of vodka were shoved into our hands. Adrian flashed me a grin before downing his and I followed suit, happy to feel the alcohol warm me on its way down.

An hour and too many shots later, I felt arms wrap around my waist as I chatted to one of the few girls in the group.

“Come dance with me.” Adrian murmured in my ear. Still holding onto my waist, he led me to the dance floor as I awkwardly ended my conversation with the girl who’s name I’d already forgotten. I turned to face him, hanging my hands loosely around his neck and enjoying the way he pressed up against me. We moved in sync to song after song, the tension between us building until Adrian leant down to press his soft lips into mine. The combination of the alcohol and the music made our kiss euphoric, his lips were hungry against my own and I was more than eager to go with whatever pace he set. I could feel his hands work their way down my back, grabbing at me with a desperate need. He guided us back to our booth, sitting me on his lap once we got there. I’d barely managed to come up for air before his lips were back on me, starting at my mouth but working their way along my jawline and down my neck.

So far in our relationship, Adrian and I had only kissed. Whilst I had had experiences with sex in the past, none of those experiences had been pleasurable, all had been traumatic and it was certainly not something I was ready to divulge to my summer fling. Tonight was definitely not going to be the night I would have sex with him, but I had been considering perhaps taking it up a notch, it was his birthday after all.

Adrian slipped his hand up my thigh and under my dress while he softly tugged on my earlobe with his teeth. “We were made for each other” he murmured in my ear.

“Sorry to interrupt but that was weirdly possessive” I heard Celeste say, but before I could think to reply Adrian’s lips were on mine again. He kissed me until I pulled away, gasping for air. In that moment I looked into his eyes, all traces of his playfulness gone, replaced with burning desire. It was unnerving in a way that made me hesitate before kissing him again, something which he seemed to notice.

“What’s wrong?” He grunted, pulling me closer to him.

“Nothing birthday boy, I just need to use the ladies room, be back in a tick.” I giggled, trying not to give away that something didn’t feel quite right. I made my way to the restroom, craving the bright lights and quiet that it would offer me. I reached the ‘female only’ sign, sighing in relief when I realised no one else was in there. “Finally, a moment to myself” I murmured as I walked through the door, however when I turned to close it behind me I was met with two blazing green eyes.

“He followed us to the bathroom?” Celeste said with the slightest hint of unease. I didn’t have time to respond, Adrian was on me in an instant, shoving me into the tiled wall with his hand while his other locked the door behind him. Before I could speak his lips gnashed into mine, so hard that I swear I could feel my lips bruising with each kiss.

“So fucking perfect” he whispered as he once again slipped his hand up my thigh, only this time he didn’t slow as he reached for the smooth underwear I wore underneath.

I could feel the panic rising in my throat, I had to get him off. Whilst I didn’t want to use my werewolf strength on Adrian, I saw no other way to snap him out of whatever sex induced insanity he was currently in. I planted my hands firmly on his chest and pushed him with enough force to send him into toppling over.

Except he didn’t.

Adrian broke away from his kiss to shoot me a devious grin, which seemed to say that he knew something I didn’t. As I watched his face change from boyish to predatory, I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I knew I had to move, to do something, but my heart had turned into lead and fallen straight through to my stomach, planting me to the floor with a sickening sense of dread.

“MAIA!” Celeste’s howl pulled me to the present. Adrian had started taking off my underwear while his other hand grabbed one of my breasts, he was no longer looking at me, but slowly kissing his way down the back of my neck.

“Adrian, you need to get off me.” I grunted, still trying, and failing, to shove him off.

“Don’t be like that Maia, I told you, we’re made for each other.” He said between sloppy kisses.

“Nope, that’s definitely fucking weird. Something is wrong with him.” Celeste stated, “Maia we need to get out of this situation, now.”

In my time living as a rogue, before I eventually integrated into human life, I often found myself in fights. Either for accidentally trespassing on someone’s pack, or fending off unwelcome company. Over time I’d developed exceptional strength which I channeled as I lifted Adrian’s head and swiftly rammed the palm of my hand upwards into his chin. For a moment, he was completely dazed as shock crossed his face. He recovered quickly - quicker than I anticipated - but the brief pause had been enough. I manoeuvred myself, placing my back against his chest, and kicked off the wall, sending us flying backwards. I heard Adrian’s back hit the entrance door, the shattered splinters hitting the floor as we flew through it. The music still blasted but a small circle of shocked faces began to close in on us, asking if we were okay. I heard Adrian wheezing behind me, hoping that meant he had been winded in the fall. I didn’t waste time turning around to check, instead I crawled up onto my feet and pressed my way through the half naked crowd. Some tried to stop me, checking to see if I was okay, but I ignored them completely, pushing through anyone who blocked the path between me and the exit door.

Finally, the neon exit sign came into view and I started descending down the stairs. I couldn’t hear any footsteps behind me, which I took as a sign Adrian wasn’t in pursuit. I swore to myself when I realised I’d left my purse in the booth, complete with my phone and cash. “Don’t worry about that right now, just keep going” Celeste urged me on. By now I had made it to the club entrance, edging my way past the bouncers who both took in my dishevelled form and gave me concerned looks. I met their eyes briefly before I noticed them turn their head to look inside, their concern was replaced with confusion as they both appeared to be watching something unusual unfold.

“Have you seen a girl go past here? Long brown hair, blue dress?” I heard Adrian from just inside the club. I still didn’t entirely know what was going on, but call it my spidey-sense, because something told me I needed to put space between Adrian and I. I kicked off my heels and broke out into a run, aimlessly at first, until I heard boots in the distance slapping against the footpath. “We can’t go back to the apartment, he’ll find us there. Go to the forest, he won’t be able to catch up once we shift” Celeste said.

“Good plan” I grunted, trying to conserve my energy. All of the towns I chose to live in were surrounded by some kind of forest, so that Celeste had space to stretch her legs. Luckily for us, it also doubled as a great escape route.

I made a sharp left down a suburban street, the only sound amongst the sleeping homes was my feet sprinting along the road and a second pair of footsteps growing ever closer. Where the road ended was where the forest began, and I was so so close. I could feel the burn of fatigue spreading up my legs, but I refused to give in, not when I could hear Adrian’s ragged breath behind me.

I reached the end of the road and shifted mid-jump. Celeste took over and carried us into the forest, only once looking back to see the surprise on Adrian’s face.

We met his eyes, gleaming like emeralds in the moonlight. There was no surprise though, only that devious grin splitting his face. “I’m going to find you Maia, maybe not tonight, but we will be together.” He said, almost to himself. A shiver ran down our spine as Celeste turned on her heels and made her way through the forest.

What the fuck had just happened?

Celeste ran us deep into the forest, by the time she came to a stop it was approaching midday. “You wouldn’t be able to use that gifted nose of ours to sniff out some of my clothes could you?” I asked Celeste. Usually I was pretty organised and undressed before shifting, but I’m the type to be prepared for anything so I had hidden a few sets of clothes throughout the forest just in case. It wasn’t on my agenda to return to town naked, although at this point I wasn’t sure I’d be returning to town at all. “Already ahead of you” she replied. We padded over to a nearby tree before shifting. Whilst I could see hints of warm sun and blue skies through the canopy, the tall trees blocked out most of the heat, so the forest floor still felt cool and moist from the night before. I reached down to a small nook in the tree and retrieved the clothes I had left there months prior, pulling on the grey tracksuit pants and t-shirt, thankful that I wouldn’t be wondering the forest naked. “So, are we

We had been following the supposed Alpha for 15 minutes before he disappeared behind a tree, only to return a moment later in his human form, fully clothed unfortunately. “Shift” he commanded, as his eyes scoured the sleeping forest, not once falling on me. Nudity was not a big deal in the werewolf world, we shifted and were left without clothes all the time. I, however, had had a completely different experience and so I’d rather scoop my eyes out with a hot spoon instead of bare myself in front of this mountain of a man. Celeste agreed with me on this one, and turned her head defiantly. “I’m not one for repeating myself, pup.” He growled, as he slowly turned to look at me. Whilst his face was somewhat void of emotion, I could practically feel his anger crackling in the air. To my surprise, Celeste shifted without warning, leaving me standing there with a dumbfounded look on my face. “What the fuck was that” I hissed, trying to use my hands to cover myself. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t

Chapter 4Hours later and I was still reeling from what had happened, even after I was dressed and shown to my room in the far end of the enormous pack house. It had taken me months to adjust to Celeste being in my head, and now I had an Alpha in there too. I could already feel the fibres of my sanity unravelling. “At least he’s hot” Celeste chimed in as I thought myself into a spiral of despair. “Keep it in your pants, he’s obviously a sociopath.” I replied, pacing the length of my room. Alpha Julius had practically dragged me kicking and screaming up the stairs from the pack cells before leaving me with Dean. Not once did he respond to the abuse I hurled at him, although he did shoot me a murderous glare when I attempted to take a swipe at his cheek. Dean was less thrilled to see me than before, and didn’t say a word as he pushed me through the halls and around many twists and turns. In between my pitiful attempts at escaping, all of which were thwarted by an unenthusiastic Dean

Julius POV I watched as Maia sauntered out of my office and down the hall, her wide hips swaying as she turned a corner, disappearing from sight. I focused my attention back on my Beta. “Deano?” I questioned, surprised that he had let her give him a nickname in the first place. “Don’t fucking start.” He groaned, running his hands along his face. The two of us had been friends since we were pups, and his father had been my fathers Beta for well over two decades before I took over the alpha-ship. We had gone through life together, from the highest highs to the lowest lows, Dean had been there through it all. “Why is she here? I thought there was a kill-on-sight order when it came to trespassers.” He huffed as he slumped into the armchair Maia had just been sitting in. “She was unarmed and alone, would hardly have been a respectable kill.”I said, resting my hands behind my head. “But I also want to see if we can use her.” “Oh?” Deans interest was piqued. “She said she’d been livi

Maia’s POV By the time I made it out of the pack house it was mid-morning. The skies were clear, the sun not yet high enough to add much warmth to the day but it was beautiful nonetheless. I took in my surroundings, breathing in the scents of the forest around me, filling my lungs with something other than commercial-grade cleaning products which I swore had given me a permanent headache. Or perhaps that was Alpha Julius, who knows. I commenced my walk into town, which wasn’t difficult to find considering all the main buildings were connected by the same road, taking in the sights as I went. Alpha Julius had mentioned that his pack was one of the largest, but by the size of this quaint community I assumed that he had taken over a number of other packs to add to his numbers. The town was cute, with most of it’s infrastructure imbedded into the forest in a similar way to the pack house, and designed almost like one big round-a-bout, with a large memorial feature in its centre and sho

The shower had done nothing to calm my thoughts. I went to bed a confused mess, overthinking every single detail of the events of the last couple of days. I could hardly make sense of any of it, from fighting Adrian, to getting captured by Julius, and then there was the bizarre attraction I had towards him. What did they call that, Stockholm Syndrome? Sleep did not come easy, and even when it eventually consumed me, it was filled with nightmares I thought I’d left behind long ago. I woke to the sun having barely risen, covered in a thin layer of sweat and sporting a very sore throat. “I think you were screaming again…” Celeste said, her voice filled with concern. Nightmares had plagued me for so many years, every night my brain had decided to put my most painful memories on replay, giving Celeste full access to what my life was like before she joined it. I hadn’t had one in just over a year, but with the insanity that had ensued over the last few days I wasn’t surprised they’d retur

“I’ve heard rumours about a rogue living in the pack, I can’t believe they’re actually true.” Maeve replied as I gave her the run down of my background. “Don’t get me wrong, I know rogues aren’t popular, but it seems like a bigger deal in this pack?” I questioned. Something about Maeve made me feel like she was an open book, and it really did feel like the term ‘rogue’ was more than a dirty word around here. “Ohhhh, you don’t know?” She said dramatically, clearly I was on to something. “Nope.” I replied, popping the ‘p’. “Five years ago we had a really terrible rogue attack. Alpha Julius had just taken over as Alpha, and I guess they thought it was a time the pack might be weakened or something?” She said, looking around as if she didn’t want to be overheard. “Being part of one of the biggest packs means we often get challenged but we were always able to take care of it. Anyway, this time there were hundreds of rogues. Too many for our warriors in town to manage, so a lot of our p

Julius POV I laid in bed listening to Maia thrashing against her sheets from beyond the wall that separated us. She had been having nightmares all week, her screams ringing through the pack house each night, jolting me awake. On the first night I nearly stormed through her door, prepared to face whoever was responsible. But as I approached her room and the screaming stopped, I could hear her breathing steady, slowly replaced by ragged sobs that seemed to go on for hours. Every night since then I wondered what could cause her such distress, such pain that she was plagued to relive it night after night. I had been busy all week dealing with rogue attacks, I hadn’t seen her for days, and yet she continued to consume my thoughts. Her attitude was infuriating, and yet at the same time I found it completely alluring to be challenged by her. There was an air of dominance that she carried, not dissimilar to the energy of an Alpha, which intrigued me. I was unable to help myself when Dean

The rest of the day passed by in a blur, as if time itself was eager to find out whether we would be victorious, or if we would all suffer a premature departure from this world. After the meeting with the warriors I had rushed over to Maeve’s house. Her parents greeted me with tired, weary eyes and somber smiles as they apologised for their absence at the meeting. “How’s she doing? Can I see her?” I had asked desperately, impatient to do whatever I could to be there for Maeve. But her parents exchanged tired glances and shook their heads in unison. “I’m sorry Luna, she’s just fallen asleep after being up all night crying. If you don’t mind, we’d like to let her rest.” And by the looks of it, they needed rest themselves. “I understand, please, tell her I was here and that I’m thinking of her.” They both gave me smiles that didn’t reach their eyes before the front door started to close. I shot out my hand, my palm hitting the wood with a slap that made them both wince. “Wait, you ne

We laid sweaty and trembling in each others arms for a few more moments, before Julius broke the comfortable silence. “We need to get ready.” He murmured into my hair, his fingers tracing soothing circles on the skin of my lower back. I felt my eyelids flutter, suddenly wishing I had the luxury of time so I could fall asleep in his arms. My only response was a groan as I planted my palms firmly on his chest and pushed myself up, my face twisting into a scowl. He chuckled at the sight. “Thank you, my fierce little wolf, I needed that.” He planted a chaste kiss on my nose before looping my arms around his neck and standing himself up from the chair. My legs instinctually wrapped around his torso. “We both did.” I sighed, resting my head in the crook of his neck, enjoying the rhythmic motion as he walked us into the shower. “This plan has to work, Maia.” “It will.” “If I lose you again, I don’t-“ my stomach twists at the pain in his voice, and I look up to see nothing but pure desp

How do you tell your new pack, that not only are you a werewolf/Lycan hybrid, a species which no one even knew existed, but that you’re the reason they’re homes and lives are currently in jeopardy? I didn’t fucking know, and neither did Julius. We spent the entire night in his office, drafting and re-drafting the speech that had the potential to send our pack into utter chaos. Even when we were done, I still wasn’t sure I was happy. Should I be reading from a piece of paper? Should I let Eve speak? Julius even put forward the idea that I show my lycan form at the speech, an idea which Eve immediately intercepted. Her exact words were “I’m not even sure you’re ready to see that, Mate, let alone the people of our pack.” Her words were like ice trickling down my spine, reminding me that I hadn’t seen my lycan form yet either. We managed to get a handful of hours sleep in the early hours of the morning, although as the sun crept in through the gap in the curtain I really felt as thou

“So, are you going to turn into some apocalyptic, wolf-humanoid, or what?” I jabbed Dean in the ribs, replacing his smirk with a wince as I returned to my spot against the kitchen island bench. “Knowing your sick mind, you’d be turned on by such a thing.” A low growl emanates from Julius’ chest as he wraps a possessive hand around my waist. I bite back a sigh as the pad of his thumb traces soft circles against my bare skin, the problem at hand momentarily forgotten as sparks cloud my train of thought. “Focus.” He murmurs through the mind-link, the rich sound of his voice only stoking the flame in my core. “I’m not sure, Luna, I prefer my she-wolves on four paws… a wolf standing up like a person freaks me out.” Dean pokes a finger down his mouth as he pretends to gag, although the humour in his eyes tells me he’s still teasing. A response is on the tip of my tongue before I’m thrown into the backseat of my mind, the voice leaving my lips not my own. “That’s okay, Beta, only speci

  • Alpha Julius   Chapter 31

My head spun as Adrian all but vanished, exiting the room at a speed that left him as nothing more than a blur of flesh and fabric. But I wasn’t focused on him, I was focused on my best friend, her eyes wide and lips trembling as silent tears fell down her cheeks. “Maeve…” I whispered, her distraught gaze meeting my own, a look crossing her face as though she was just remembering that we were still in the room with her. All at once she crumpled, sinking to the floor before I could catch her, as though all her strength had simply vanished from her body. “Hey, hey, I’m here, we’re all here.” I hushed as I cradled her head against my chest, holding back my own tears as her violent sobs threatened to break my heart in two. From what I had heard, a rejection from your mate was agonizingly painful, knowing your soul will never be whole, knowing you may never experience that sense of fulfillment that comes with true happiness. Sometimes the Moon Goddess grants second-chance mates, but not

It seemed our demonstration had it’s intended affect. Pack members gritted their teeth and fought harder than I had ever seen them fight before, a newfound sense of determination filling the atmosphere as wolf after wolf went to battle. Julius, Dean and I wandered through the groups, offering words of advice and encouragement, which in all truth wasn’t needed too often. These people had already protected their town once, and they were showing me exactly how they planned on doing it again. The session went longer than usual, clocking up to almost three hours by the time everyone was ready to call it a day. And yet, there was still no sign of Maeve or Jake. “Did you notice when Maeve left?” I asked Dean, the loud click of a lock echoing around us as the key turned in his hand. His brow furrowed at my question, igniting a small flame of anxiety deep in my core. “I did actually, her and Jake left at the start of your fight with Jules, kind of in a rush now that I think of it. But I don

My best friend climbed onto the stage, ignoring the steps she could have easily taken, and wrapped me tightly in her arms before pulling away, he small hands still gripping my shoulders as she eyed me curiously. Her face lit up when her eyes fell on the now healed mark that sat embedded within my creamy skin. “Oh my god, congratulations!” She squealed, earning us a side-eye from Julius and a muffled laugh from Dean as they stood to the side, far enough away that we had some privacy but close enough to hear just about everything we would say. Especially with how easily Maeve’s voice carried. “Thank you” I replied, an embarrassed smile forming on my face and the beginning of a blush rising in my chest. “So you two have, ya know, sealed the deal?” Maeve made some enthusiastic hand gestures, making me choke on my own saliva as the blush crept up to my cheeks. “Yes, Maeve, I don’t think the mark would have healed if we hadn’t done…that.”“I know.” She grinned, the sneaky bitch. “I’m gl

Maia POVMy head was reeling with the multiple bombs Wes had dropped on us as I followed Julius up the winding staircase and back into the main area of the pack house, Dean close on my heels. I could barely hear them as they spoke together, mentioning something about the Alpha of the Blue Moon pack, too wrapped up in my own thoughts and feelings to pay any attention to the real world around me. I was surprised at my reaction to seeing Wes for the first time since escaping his trailer (the first time). Anger lashed out of me as I had stood before him, watching as he trembled at the back of his cell, his dull grey eyes holding the fear that I had expected myself to feel. “Maia, are you coming?” Julius’ light touch on my arm snapped me out of my thoughts, his eyes glowing with concern as they searched my own. “Um, yes, sorry, where are we going?” My words tripped over themselves as I tried to get back up to speed with what Julius and Dean had been talking about. “Back to my office.”

Julius POV“Are you sure you’re ready for this?” I asked Maia as we approached the door to the basement. Confidence and resolution rang through our bond, but I didn’t want to make any assumptions, not when only a day ago she was almost completely catatonic. She still hadn’t told me exactly what happened, and whilst I was curious to know what Adrian had done, so I could repay the favour, there was no chance I would push her. I knew she would tell me in her own time. “I’m sure.” Was all she said, her voice filled with determination and her back straight as we came to a stop at the thick steel door. I raked my eyes over her strong body, knowing by the way the corners of her lips twitched that she could feel my admiration through the bond. “Okay, let’s do this.” We stepped through the door and made our descent into the basement, the souls of our shoes whispering against the polished concrete. I felt her bristle at the coldness, and I inwardly cringed as her anxiety crept through the bo
