Chapter 4

Hours later and I was still reeling from what had happened, even after I was dressed and shown to my room in the far end of the enormous pack house. It had taken me months to adjust to Celeste being in my head, and now I had an Alpha in there too. I could already feel the fibres of my sanity unravelling.

“At least he’s hot” Celeste chimed in as I thought myself into a spiral of despair.

“Keep it in your pants, he’s obviously a sociopath.” I replied, pacing the length of my room.

Alpha Julius had practically dragged me kicking and screaming up the stairs from the pack cells before leaving me with Dean. Not once did he respond to the abuse I hurled at him, although he did shoot me a murderous glare when I attempted to take a swipe at his cheek.

Dean was less thrilled to see me than before, and didn’t say a word as he pushed me through the halls and around many twists and turns. In between my pitiful attempts at escaping, all of which were thwarted by an unenthusiastic Dean, I marvelled at the interior of the pack house, with its high ceilings and modern chandeliers which contrasted the dark walnut logs lining the walls. Wood was used for just about everything, from the walls to the ceilings, to the furniture, and was complimented by black marble floor tiles streaked with streams of brown and gold.

I made a mental note to get the number of their designer before I left.

We reached the end of a long hallway and stopped in front of a large oak door when Dean shoved a set of keys in my hand before storming off. Figuring I wouldn’t remember how to find my way back out anyway, I slowly pushed the door open and gasped at the luxury before me. My room was more like a small apartment, with a queen sized bed styled with lush white linen and a small kitchenette to the side. Clearly the designer had a thing for moody vibes because everything, from the carpet to the walls to the wardrobe, was a deep shade of gunmetal grey. The bathroom, on the other hand, couldn’t be brighter, with the walls and floors lined with brilliant white marble tiles and chrome silver tapwear. A spiral chandelier hung above my head, illuminating just enough of the room for me to see the shower that had not one, but two rain heads and a large round bath nestled beneath a window looking out into the forest.

To say I was overwhelmed by the lavishness of my accomodation was an understatement, although it did nothing to dilute any of my anger towards Alpha Julius.

“Who the fuck does that? Makes someone join a pack without their permission?” I ranted out loud.

“It’s pretty extreme, I have to agree.” Celeste said, doing some pacing of her own.

“And for what, like I’m some kind of rogue mastermind trying to get the secrets of the great Blood Moon Pack.” I exclaimed sarcastically. “I’ve never heard something so ridiculous in my life. Paranoid much? He thinks a dainty little girl could be his packs undoing? What a fucking idiot” on and on I went, until I eventually crashed in the early hours of the morning, falling into a dreamless sleep.

I awoke still dressed in the black cotton pants and top I had been given the day before, and surrounded by pillows so soft that they looked more like giant marshmallows. The sun streamed through the long window that ran the length of the far wall, alerting me that the day had started. I groaned inwardly.

“What do I do now?” I murmured to myself.

“You can report to me in an hour” a husky voice responded in my head. I practically jumped out of bed at the sound, completely forgetting about the mind-link.

“A bit of warning would have been nice” I grumbled, “where’s your office?”

“You’ll figure it out.” Alpha Julius replied, and then ended the mind-link with an audible click.

“Directions must be too fucking hard to give” I said to myself as I entered the bathroom, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I quickly showered, using some of the lavender body wash that had been set on the soap dish, and got out before I started to melt under the rain head. Whilst drying myself with one of the plush cotton towels hanging on the wall, I had a look in the vanity drawers to find one contained the essentials - hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and female sanitary items. I combed my hair and brushed my teeth as I sauntered back into the bedroom in search of clothes.

The room was like a hotel, only stocked with travel pack necessities, so I was left having to wear the clothes I was given the day before. Not that I minded, I was used to wearing clothes that had been stuffed in a forest tree for months.

“Now, I know you’re pissed, but I feel like we’ll get out of here a lot quicker if we lose the attitude when we’re with the Alpha” Celeste said hesitantly. “There’s nothing an Alpha hates more than disrespect, so let’s go with the flow and not get ourselves into trouble while we’re here.” Celeste concluded her mini pep-talk. I didn’t bother with a reply, but I knew my wolf was right.

Half an hour later and I was roaming the halls, looking for anyone who would give me some directions. Three times I got lost, one time I thought I heard someone but it turned out to be the echo of my own footsteps, and at some point I ended back at my own room. On what felt like my fifth loop around the west wing, I ran into my new best friend.

“Deano!” I shouted, as I spotted his short blonde hair and broad shoulders disappearing around a corner. I saw him visibly tense as he stopped, causing a giggle to escape from my lips. He turned to look at me, an almost pained expression plastered on his face, which only made me laugh harder.

“Come on, it’s not that bad” I said, as I eventually reached him.

“How can I help you this morning Maia?” He sighed, his hazel eyes checking his watch as if he was late for something.

“Straight to the point I see” I huffed “Alpha J, where’s his office? I was meant to be there…now.”

“Some advice, do not call the Alpha ‘Alpha J’ if you want to get out of here with all your fingers” he said, as he started walking again “as for his office, I’m going past there now, you can follow along with me.”

I was not short, but Dean was a giant with long legs which left me running after him most of the time. I could have sworn I even saw a slight smirk brighten his face for just a second as he watched me try to keep up, although he was back to his broody self in an instant.

Ten minutes later and I was standing outside the office of “Alpha Julius Ashford” with my fist raised ready to knock. Before I could connect my knuckles to the oak door I heard the mind-link activate.

“Come in” Alpha Julius ordered.

“Is it that hard just to speak it out loud” I thought to myself.

“I think he’s reminding you that he’s always… there” Celeste replied, making me shudder at the realisation.

I pushed open the heavy door and inched my way into the room, suddenly feeling slightly nervous. Alpha Julius’ office was like a library out of a classic novel. The walls were lined with shelf after shelf of books, both old, new and ancient looking. He sat at a grand desk that looked to be made out of solid mahogany, littered with pens and paperwork, and which matched the antique chairs nestled in a reading corner to the left, illuminated by a lamp with a stunning emerald green glass lampshade.

Alpha Julius was partially hidden by shadows casted by the floor to ceiling stained glass window behind him, but even so I could see that he too looked like he belonged in a classic novel. His hair was pushed back neatly and his face clean shaven, making him look far less savage than he did the day before. He was wearing a charcoal grey three-piece suit, complete with a black tie and white shirt, all of which looked to be tailor made to fit his huge shoulders. I found myself wondering why he was so dressed up.

“Take a picture, Maia” he smirked, not bothering to look up from the paper he was scribbling on. I felt myself blush with the embarrassment of being caught gawking at this asshole. The fact that he used my name for the first time wasn’t lost on me either.

“You summoned me, your highness?” I said in my best Victorian accent, putting on a show of making a curtsy. Alpha Julius slowly raised his head to glare at me, no trace of amusement in his eyes.

“You will refer to me as Alpha, little wolf” he growled “because as I’m sure you remember, I am your Alpha now.”

“How could I forget” I sighed under my breath

“Good, now sit” he commanded, returning to his paperwork. I approached his desk and took a seat in a large armchair positioned directly in front of him. “You’re still in yesterdays clothes.” He stated

“Good observation” I quipped

He exhaled sharply and shook his head as he grabbed a blank piece of paper and slapped it down on the desk in front of me.

“Write down your previous address, I’ll get one of my men to collect your things today.”

I stared at the paper, images of blazing green eyes and rough hands flitting through my mind. How had that all happened just two nights ago?

“I don’t have one.” I said quietly.

Alpha Julius eyed me curiously for a moment before sliding the paper to the side and replacing it with a black credit card.

“That’s a pack card, it’ll work on any shop here in town. Buy what you need today and return it to me tomorrow, there’s no limit.” I was taken aback by the act of generosity, but quickly reminded myself that he was the reason I was left with nothing in the first place. I took the card in my hand, glancing down and noticing that it was in the name of Alpha Julius Ashford before stashing it in my pocket.

“Anything else, Alpha?” I decided being polite was within my capability after being handed unlimited pack funds. A smug look crossed his face as the word ‘Alpha’ left my lips.

“Yes, actually,” he grunted as he pushed his paperwork aside and leaned back in his chair, giving me a better view of his suit and a new appreciation for the way it hugged every dip and curve of muscle layering his huge figure. I mentally slapped my own face. “You’re here because I’m not in the business of killing unarmed females. But the protection of my pack is always my first priority, if you had of been a male trespassing on my land, you’d be rotting in a shallow grave right now.”

“Thanks?” Was I supposed to be grateful I wasn’t born with a dick?

“So you’ll remain here living in this pack until I decide you’re not a threat, at which point you’ll be free to leave. Until then, you can go wherever you like within pack limits but you must return to the pack house each night, is that understood?” His voice was low and commanding, I had a feeling this was non-negotiable.

“And what time is my curfew?” I said sarcastically, unable to help myself.

His glare turned murderous as I watched the copper of his eyes practically glow.

“Just follow the rules Maia, I’m not someone you want to make an enemy of.” He growled, low and menacing. I gulped, nodding my head in understanding. “That’s all.” He concluded.

I stood from the exquisitely comfortable armchair and practically ran to the door.

“If you need anything, let my Beta know.” Alpha Julius called just as I turned the large brass handle of his office door to leave. Not bothering to reply as I was far too anxious to get out of the Alpha’s presence, I hastily yanked the door open and slammed into a wall of muscle. I looked up to see Dean’s hazel eyes looking down on me.

“Beta… Deano?!” I gasped as I suddenly realised who Dean actually was. An exhausted look crossed his face as his eyes flitted between me and Alpha Julius.

“Maia.” He greeted me with a grunt, as if we were being introduced properly for the first time.

I heard a low grumble from behind me and looked back to see Alpha Julius watching our interaction with what I could only imagine as pure annoyance written on his face. Taking that as my cue to leave, I gave Dean a quick wink and moseyed on out in the direction of the pack house entrance.

Julius POV I watched as Maia sauntered out of my office and down the hall, her wide hips swaying as she turned a corner, disappearing from sight. I focused my attention back on my Beta. “Deano?” I questioned, surprised that he had let her give him a nickname in the first place. “Don’t fucking start.” He groaned, running his hands along his face. The two of us had been friends since we were pups, and his father had been my fathers Beta for well over two decades before I took over the alpha-ship. We had gone through life together, from the highest highs to the lowest lows, Dean had been there through it all. “Why is she here? I thought there was a kill-on-sight order when it came to trespassers.” He huffed as he slumped into the armchair Maia had just been sitting in. “She was unarmed and alone, would hardly have been a respectable kill.”I said, resting my hands behind my head. “But I also want to see if we can use her.” “Oh?” Deans interest was piqued. “She said she’d been livi

Maia’s POV By the time I made it out of the pack house it was mid-morning. The skies were clear, the sun not yet high enough to add much warmth to the day but it was beautiful nonetheless. I took in my surroundings, breathing in the scents of the forest around me, filling my lungs with something other than commercial-grade cleaning products which I swore had given me a permanent headache. Or perhaps that was Alpha Julius, who knows. I commenced my walk into town, which wasn’t difficult to find considering all the main buildings were connected by the same road, taking in the sights as I went. Alpha Julius had mentioned that his pack was one of the largest, but by the size of this quaint community I assumed that he had taken over a number of other packs to add to his numbers. The town was cute, with most of it’s infrastructure imbedded into the forest in a similar way to the pack house, and designed almost like one big round-a-bout, with a large memorial feature in its centre and sho

The shower had done nothing to calm my thoughts. I went to bed a confused mess, overthinking every single detail of the events of the last couple of days. I could hardly make sense of any of it, from fighting Adrian, to getting captured by Julius, and then there was the bizarre attraction I had towards him. What did they call that, Stockholm Syndrome? Sleep did not come easy, and even when it eventually consumed me, it was filled with nightmares I thought I’d left behind long ago. I woke to the sun having barely risen, covered in a thin layer of sweat and sporting a very sore throat. “I think you were screaming again…” Celeste said, her voice filled with concern. Nightmares had plagued me for so many years, every night my brain had decided to put my most painful memories on replay, giving Celeste full access to what my life was like before she joined it. I hadn’t had one in just over a year, but with the insanity that had ensued over the last few days I wasn’t surprised they’d retur

“I’ve heard rumours about a rogue living in the pack, I can’t believe they’re actually true.” Maeve replied as I gave her the run down of my background. “Don’t get me wrong, I know rogues aren’t popular, but it seems like a bigger deal in this pack?” I questioned. Something about Maeve made me feel like she was an open book, and it really did feel like the term ‘rogue’ was more than a dirty word around here. “Ohhhh, you don’t know?” She said dramatically, clearly I was on to something. “Nope.” I replied, popping the ‘p’. “Five years ago we had a really terrible rogue attack. Alpha Julius had just taken over as Alpha, and I guess they thought it was a time the pack might be weakened or something?” She said, looking around as if she didn’t want to be overheard. “Being part of one of the biggest packs means we often get challenged but we were always able to take care of it. Anyway, this time there were hundreds of rogues. Too many for our warriors in town to manage, so a lot of our p

  • Alpha Julius   Chapter 9

Julius POV I laid in bed listening to Maia thrashing against her sheets from beyond the wall that separated us. She had been having nightmares all week, her screams ringing through the pack house each night, jolting me awake. On the first night I nearly stormed through her door, prepared to face whoever was responsible. But as I approached her room and the screaming stopped, I could hear her breathing steady, slowly replaced by ragged sobs that seemed to go on for hours. Every night since then I wondered what could cause her such distress, such pain that she was plagued to relive it night after night. I had been busy all week dealing with rogue attacks, I hadn’t seen her for days, and yet she continued to consume my thoughts. Her attitude was infuriating, and yet at the same time I found it completely alluring to be challenged by her. There was an air of dominance that she carried, not dissimilar to the energy of an Alpha, which intrigued me. I was unable to help myself when Dean

Maia POV Awareness creeped into my mind slowly, the seconds passing before the events of the night before came back to me. I groaned as memories replayed in my mind until one in particular made me snap open my eyes. My room was flooded with the morning light, illuminating the huge figure sitting across the room watching me. “Good Morning, Maia.” Julius said huskily, his voice sounding as though he hadn’t slept a wink. I felt a blush creep up my cheeks, embarrassed that Julius had seen me in such a vulnerable state. In saying that, I had one of the best sleeps I’d had in a long time while he was watching over me. An interesting development I thought, seeing as I had assumed Julius would be the one giving me nightmares, not saving me from them. “Morning.” I grunted in response, still not nearly awake enough to engage in conversation. “Mind filling me in on why you wake up screaming every night?” He asked bluntly. I was taken aback, not expecting a question like that first thing i

I had no desire to sit in my room for the rest of the day, especially as I knew I’d just end up overthinking everything that had happened in the last 24 hours. Maeve had told me she’d be working on the restorations in her family’s restaurant all weekend, just off the Main Street, so I decided I’d head out and see if they needed a helping hand. I arrived at the newly re-built building just after 12. Maeve had said it used to be an old Mediterranean restaurant that had remained unchanged for decades, but it seemed her family wanted to make a fresh start and had taken a more modern approach this time round. The outside had recently been completed, it’s entire frontage consisting of one big window which gave you a magnificent view of the restaurants interior, which currently consisted of teams of people working in high-vis uniforms. It wasn’t long before I spotted Maeve, dressed in a pair of dark low-rise jeans and a white cut-off t-shirt. She was pouring over a collection of papers wit

  • Alpha Julius   Chapter 12

I awoke to a pitch black room, the only indication that morning had arrived was the heat radiating from the covered windows as I looked around, feeling slightly disoriented. The spot beside me was empty, but I could feel Julius’ warmth lingering in the sheets as I stretched, sighing as my muscles groaned against the sudden movement. His scent was all-consuming as I continued to lie there, refreshingly masculine in a way that made my mouth water with every breath I took. My eyes snapped to the bathroom as I heard a tap turn on. Julius was standing at the sink in a pair of black briefs, and I watched in fascination as he ran the water through his unkept hair. Droplets flowed down his back, sparkling like diamonds as they met at the nape of his neck and travelled down the groove of his spine. Suddenly, I was feeling thirsty. I froze as Julius looked up, his eyes meeting mine through the mirror as his damp hair hung over his forehead. “Sleep well, Maia?” He asked, a smug grin tugging

The rest of the day passed by in a blur, as if time itself was eager to find out whether we would be victorious, or if we would all suffer a premature departure from this world. After the meeting with the warriors I had rushed over to Maeve’s house. Her parents greeted me with tired, weary eyes and somber smiles as they apologised for their absence at the meeting. “How’s she doing? Can I see her?” I had asked desperately, impatient to do whatever I could to be there for Maeve. But her parents exchanged tired glances and shook their heads in unison. “I’m sorry Luna, she’s just fallen asleep after being up all night crying. If you don’t mind, we’d like to let her rest.” And by the looks of it, they needed rest themselves. “I understand, please, tell her I was here and that I’m thinking of her.” They both gave me smiles that didn’t reach their eyes before the front door started to close. I shot out my hand, my palm hitting the wood with a slap that made them both wince. “Wait, you ne

We laid sweaty and trembling in each others arms for a few more moments, before Julius broke the comfortable silence. “We need to get ready.” He murmured into my hair, his fingers tracing soothing circles on the skin of my lower back. I felt my eyelids flutter, suddenly wishing I had the luxury of time so I could fall asleep in his arms. My only response was a groan as I planted my palms firmly on his chest and pushed myself up, my face twisting into a scowl. He chuckled at the sight. “Thank you, my fierce little wolf, I needed that.” He planted a chaste kiss on my nose before looping my arms around his neck and standing himself up from the chair. My legs instinctually wrapped around his torso. “We both did.” I sighed, resting my head in the crook of his neck, enjoying the rhythmic motion as he walked us into the shower. “This plan has to work, Maia.” “It will.” “If I lose you again, I don’t-“ my stomach twists at the pain in his voice, and I look up to see nothing but pure desp

How do you tell your new pack, that not only are you a werewolf/Lycan hybrid, a species which no one even knew existed, but that you’re the reason they’re homes and lives are currently in jeopardy? I didn’t fucking know, and neither did Julius. We spent the entire night in his office, drafting and re-drafting the speech that had the potential to send our pack into utter chaos. Even when we were done, I still wasn’t sure I was happy. Should I be reading from a piece of paper? Should I let Eve speak? Julius even put forward the idea that I show my lycan form at the speech, an idea which Eve immediately intercepted. Her exact words were “I’m not even sure you’re ready to see that, Mate, let alone the people of our pack.” Her words were like ice trickling down my spine, reminding me that I hadn’t seen my lycan form yet either. We managed to get a handful of hours sleep in the early hours of the morning, although as the sun crept in through the gap in the curtain I really felt as thou

“So, are you going to turn into some apocalyptic, wolf-humanoid, or what?” I jabbed Dean in the ribs, replacing his smirk with a wince as I returned to my spot against the kitchen island bench. “Knowing your sick mind, you’d be turned on by such a thing.” A low growl emanates from Julius’ chest as he wraps a possessive hand around my waist. I bite back a sigh as the pad of his thumb traces soft circles against my bare skin, the problem at hand momentarily forgotten as sparks cloud my train of thought. “Focus.” He murmurs through the mind-link, the rich sound of his voice only stoking the flame in my core. “I’m not sure, Luna, I prefer my she-wolves on four paws… a wolf standing up like a person freaks me out.” Dean pokes a finger down his mouth as he pretends to gag, although the humour in his eyes tells me he’s still teasing. A response is on the tip of my tongue before I’m thrown into the backseat of my mind, the voice leaving my lips not my own. “That’s okay, Beta, only speci

My head spun as Adrian all but vanished, exiting the room at a speed that left him as nothing more than a blur of flesh and fabric. But I wasn’t focused on him, I was focused on my best friend, her eyes wide and lips trembling as silent tears fell down her cheeks. “Maeve…” I whispered, her distraught gaze meeting my own, a look crossing her face as though she was just remembering that we were still in the room with her. All at once she crumpled, sinking to the floor before I could catch her, as though all her strength had simply vanished from her body. “Hey, hey, I’m here, we’re all here.” I hushed as I cradled her head against my chest, holding back my own tears as her violent sobs threatened to break my heart in two. From what I had heard, a rejection from your mate was agonizingly painful, knowing your soul will never be whole, knowing you may never experience that sense of fulfillment that comes with true happiness. Sometimes the Moon Goddess grants second-chance mates, but not

It seemed our demonstration had it’s intended affect. Pack members gritted their teeth and fought harder than I had ever seen them fight before, a newfound sense of determination filling the atmosphere as wolf after wolf went to battle. Julius, Dean and I wandered through the groups, offering words of advice and encouragement, which in all truth wasn’t needed too often. These people had already protected their town once, and they were showing me exactly how they planned on doing it again. The session went longer than usual, clocking up to almost three hours by the time everyone was ready to call it a day. And yet, there was still no sign of Maeve or Jake. “Did you notice when Maeve left?” I asked Dean, the loud click of a lock echoing around us as the key turned in his hand. His brow furrowed at my question, igniting a small flame of anxiety deep in my core. “I did actually, her and Jake left at the start of your fight with Jules, kind of in a rush now that I think of it. But I don

My best friend climbed onto the stage, ignoring the steps she could have easily taken, and wrapped me tightly in her arms before pulling away, he small hands still gripping my shoulders as she eyed me curiously. Her face lit up when her eyes fell on the now healed mark that sat embedded within my creamy skin. “Oh my god, congratulations!” She squealed, earning us a side-eye from Julius and a muffled laugh from Dean as they stood to the side, far enough away that we had some privacy but close enough to hear just about everything we would say. Especially with how easily Maeve’s voice carried. “Thank you” I replied, an embarrassed smile forming on my face and the beginning of a blush rising in my chest. “So you two have, ya know, sealed the deal?” Maeve made some enthusiastic hand gestures, making me choke on my own saliva as the blush crept up to my cheeks. “Yes, Maeve, I don’t think the mark would have healed if we hadn’t done…that.”“I know.” She grinned, the sneaky bitch. “I’m gl

Maia POVMy head was reeling with the multiple bombs Wes had dropped on us as I followed Julius up the winding staircase and back into the main area of the pack house, Dean close on my heels. I could barely hear them as they spoke together, mentioning something about the Alpha of the Blue Moon pack, too wrapped up in my own thoughts and feelings to pay any attention to the real world around me. I was surprised at my reaction to seeing Wes for the first time since escaping his trailer (the first time). Anger lashed out of me as I had stood before him, watching as he trembled at the back of his cell, his dull grey eyes holding the fear that I had expected myself to feel. “Maia, are you coming?” Julius’ light touch on my arm snapped me out of my thoughts, his eyes glowing with concern as they searched my own. “Um, yes, sorry, where are we going?” My words tripped over themselves as I tried to get back up to speed with what Julius and Dean had been talking about. “Back to my office.”

  • Alpha Julius   Chapter 27

Julius POV“Are you sure you’re ready for this?” I asked Maia as we approached the door to the basement. Confidence and resolution rang through our bond, but I didn’t want to make any assumptions, not when only a day ago she was almost completely catatonic. She still hadn’t told me exactly what happened, and whilst I was curious to know what Adrian had done, so I could repay the favour, there was no chance I would push her. I knew she would tell me in her own time. “I’m sure.” Was all she said, her voice filled with determination and her back straight as we came to a stop at the thick steel door. I raked my eyes over her strong body, knowing by the way the corners of her lips twitched that she could feel my admiration through the bond. “Okay, let’s do this.” We stepped through the door and made our descent into the basement, the souls of our shoes whispering against the polished concrete. I felt her bristle at the coldness, and I inwardly cringed as her anxiety crept through the bo
