(Kaeleigh’s POV)
I woke up still shaking, the remnants of the nightmare playing over and over in my head like some sort of traumatic loop. I sighed and closed my eyes and tried to control my breathing. After the devastating destruction of our pack, we had gone into hiding. Alpha Ezra had said that we were still in danger from the pack that had attacked us. We had something they wanted, and he said that they would do anything to get their hands on it. I had said several times that maybe if we gave them whatever they wanted, that they would leave us alone and we could attempt to rebuild what was left of the Scarlet Circle pack. Our once three hundred strong pack was reduced to a handful of us. And even then we were down to only three werewolves, the rest of our pack being human. It was rare for a pack to include none shifters, and even rarer for it to be humans, but Alpha Ezra’s fated mate was human, so it had been agreed long before I was born that our pack was more welcoming.
I felt a tear roll down my cheek and wiped it away furiously. I had cried too much over that damn event. And the repeated nightmares I had since never seemed to get any easier to deal with. I was too young at the time to understand when I saw the invading Alpha rip into and snap my father’s throat, and when I saw the realisation that crossed my mother’s face when their fated bond shattered with his death. She had been attending to me and didn’t see it happen, but I saw her heart break instantly. She said goodbye to me right there, even though I didn’t know at the time. I had passed out shortly after and when I woke up, both my parents were gone.
I grieved for my parents for so long, but I understood. We were attacked and my father was the Gamma of the pack; it was his job to protect the Luna and her children and he died an honourable death doing so. Or almost doing so. The sadness of my parents’ death was far outweighed by the guilt I felt over the death of Jonathan, the Alpha heir of our pack. I had cried too much over the loss of Jonathan and blamed myself for his demise. If he hadn’t been trying to protect me, then he could have been hiding himself and wouldn’t have been killed. I blamed myself for his death every day, and to make things worse, his protection and sacrifice had been for nothing. I wasn’t even a real werewolf. Sure, I had the strength, and the heightened senses, but I couldn’t shift. My sixteenth birthday, which was the average time for a wolf to get their first shift, came and went and my wolf never made an appearance. And now at twenty-four years old, my wolf had only ever made one appearance, I think.
I had just turned twenty and was walking home from a club when someone grabbed me. I immediately recognised him as the Alpha of a local pack that we had lived by at the time. He had shown interest in me, one that did not reciprocate and he and his wounded chauvinistic pride clearly didn’t like that. He had pulled me into an alleyway and I was fighting him off pretty well, but he was an Alpha and soon overpowered me. I wasn’t sure what had happened next, but I blacked out and when I woke up, I was covered in blood and the Alpha was nowhere to be found. My only assumption was that my wolf had sensed that my life was in danger and had surfaced. I hadn’t mentioned anything about it to anyone, though. I knew what would have happened if I had. They would have insisted that we pack up everything and move again. And I had caused enough trouble already. Not only was I responsible for Jonathan’s death, but also Hayley, Alpha Ezra’s sister and Beta Jeremy’s mate, had also died trying to protect me. It was pretty evident to me that I was clearly cursed or something, so I tried to cause as little trouble as I could.
It was already enough that, after all that Alpha Ezra and Luna Elaina had taken me in and raised me as one of their own. They had dealt with my nightmares and the waking up screaming almost every night for the last nineteen years. And they had dealt with my devastation when my wolf didn’t show. And my subsequent meltdown and defiance. I had run away from home, and like most sixteen year olds, I had got myself in with the wrong crowd. I ended up in the territory of a pack with a particularly unsavoury reputation and found myself in over my head when I had tried to leave. It had taken Alpha Ezra and Beta Jeremy to force their way into the pack to get me out. I had cried for a month after that. I never knew how bad packs were. I was told that they weren’t as bad as that place, which pretty much treated their female wolves like sex slaves, but I had sworn right then that I wouldn’t allow anyone to hold any sort of control over me ever again. I might be a rogue werewolf, but at least I was free to make my own decisions.
Beta Jeremy had begun training with me soon after that. He has said that even if we weren’t an official pack, because you can’t be a pack unless you hold territory, we could still protect our own like one. And if I was going to take after my father and be the Gamma, then I needed to learn how to fight. I took pride in my position from that day, knowing that, even without a wolf, I could still at least attempt to protect Luna Elaina and their twins Luke and Tatum. As well as Beta Jeremy’s three children from his remarriage to Jade, another human who had lost her mate in the massacre. And I was fortunate that Alpha Ezra didn’t insist on the traditional pack hierarchy and rules because my smart ass mouth and actions would have probably have got me into trouble more times than I could count.
I looked at the clock on my bedside table and groaned. It was already almost 4pm, and I had slept most of the day away. I had been working at The Cove last night, a bar and nightclub for supernaturals. I had got the job when we moved back here a year or so ago, and worked five nights a week behind the bar. My shift tonight was due to start at 7pm, which meant that I had a little time before I had to head in. I climbed out of bed and stretched before heading out of my room into the main part of the apartment.
As far as apartments go, this one was a good-sized one modern one. Alpha Ezra and Beta Jeremy had gone into business together when I was young, and the business had grown and was doing pretty well right now. Well enough that they could afford two apartments in a good building with good security.
I wandered over to the kitchen area and opened the fridge to see if there was anything I could grab quickly. I was still rummaging when I felt the unmistakable feeling of Alpha power behind me. I looked over my shoulder and saw Alpha Ezra watching me. I closed the fridge door and smiled.
“Morning,” he said with a smile as I sat at the breakfast bar and grabbed an apple from the bowl. “Don’t let Eliana see that, she’d pitch a fit if she thought that was all you were eating,”
“Don’t let me see what?” Luna Eliana walked into the kitchen and narrowed her eyes at her mate and husband. I couldn’t help but laugh. Despite being an Alpha he was still powerless when it came to his mate. I loved their relationship and seeing them so much in love. Part of me wanted that for myself, but another part of me was terrified as well. The fated mate bond was one hell of a powerful force. And seeing the negative side in my mother’s heartbreak always haunted me when I thought about it.
“Oh Kae,” Elaina exclaimed, “Don’t you dare think that is all you are eating, young lady,” and I laughed again, and this time Ezra joined in.
“I told you so,” Ezra said, and I rolled my eyes and took another bite from my apple. Elaina began to busy herself in the kitchen, and it wasn’t long before the delicious scent of bacon and sausages filled the air. Ezra sat down at the breakfast bar and started looking through the paper.
“Oh by the way,” he said without looking up, “I saw your notes on Tate Holdings” I cringed in my seat. They were one of Ezra and Jeremy’s clients. I had been bored last night, so I started poking around his office. I had a thing for business and had a knack for being able to see when they had potential and such. I had written a few things down based on the little I knew from Ezra and Jeremy.
“Sorry,” I said
“No, actually they were good,” he said. “I sent them to Jeremy, and he agreed that it was a good idea,” I smiled at the praise
“You know if you considered coming into the business with me and Jer then you could quit that crappy job,” I narrowed my eyes at Ezra and he laughed, “Okay just a thought, that’s all,” He had been trying to get me to leave my job at the bar since I had got it. But I liked it, it gave me a bit of freedom to be me, and the money was pretty good. Not that Ezra and Elaina would take anything off me for rent or anything, so I had quite the little savings account.
“Maybe once I’m back from my trip, we could look at the results,” he said, and I threw him a curious look.
“You’re going out of town?” I asked, and he glanced over to Elaina, who was dishing out the food. I saw a very familiar look pass between them. One that meant that they were hiding something.
“What?” I asked and then narrowed my eyes. “Is this a business trip or one of those other trips?” I asked. The look on Ezra’s face answered my question, and I felt my stomach drop. Every few years Alpha Ezra and Beta Jeremy get some information from their contacts that indicates that we could be in danger again. Then we end up packing up our things and finding somewhere else to move to. It never really bothered me before, but when we moved here, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of home. Our old pack territory had been in this area and I wondered that us moving back here was an indication that whatever the threat was, had been taken care of. I sighed and put down the fork I had just picked up. I suddenly didn’t feel so hungry.
“When?” I asked, and Ezra shrugged in response.
“I’m sorry sweetheart,” he said. “I know you like it here and despite how much I hate it, I know you like your job. It’s just that we promised-” he stopped as Elaina coughed and put his head down. I looked between the two of them as they both avoided eye contact.
“What are you not saying?” I asked. I was getting annoyed. I hated being kept in the dark but tolerated it most of the time.
“I can’t do my Gamma duties if I don’t know all of the information, Ezra,” I snapped and stood up from my chair.
“Kae,” he called after me as I stormed off. I hated living in hiding, especially as I had no idea why, seriously what was so damn important that after almost twenty years we were still being hunted.
“Kae, please,” he said again, his voice pleading. I stopped in my tracks and closed my eyes. I took a deep breath before turning to face him. I knew I had a tendency to get a little emotional about things. Apparently it was because I was passionate, according to Beta Jeremy.
“It’s okay,” I forced a smile on my face, “I understand. I know you are just keeping us all safe. I just wish I could help.” Ezra looked at Elaina and they shared a look before he met my eyes again.
“Maybe we should have a talk when I get back,” he said. “it might be time you knew the truth. Is it okay that we wait until I get back, though? it could take more than a couple of hours.” I nodded in response. I could tell by the look on his face and the forced smile that Elaina had on, that he was being serious.
“Okay,” I said quietly, feeling a little foolish, and maybe a lot bratty.
“Okay good,” Ezra said and stood up, he kissed Elaina and walked over and Kissed my forehead, “You’re a good girl Kaeleigh, and you’ve been through more than any of us, I hope you know that we just want you safe,” I smiled again and nodded.
“I do,” I said, and he nodded.
“Well, I better get packing, and don’t worry, I’ll be back in a few day’s and then we will tell you the whole story,” and with that he headed into their bedroom and closed the door.
(Kaeleigh’s POV)A couple of hours later, I had showered and got dressed for the evening. There was no uniform at the bar other than wearing black, so I had my signature black skinny jeans and a low cut sleeveless black top. I was just finishing my light makeup when my bedroom door opened and Tatum walked in. The twenty-one year old woman was stunning with her long blond hair and petite frame, plopped herself down on my bed and watched me. I eyed her in the mirror and frowned.“Thanks for knocking,” I said, and she grinned and winked.“You’re welcome.” I rolled my eyes. Tatum might look all sweet and innocent and like butter wouldn’t melt, but the girl had a mischievous streak a mile long.“I’d thought I would accompany you tonight,” she said, and I surveyed her tight black dress that showed more than it hid. I shook my head.“Nope,” I said, and she
(Kaeleigh’s POV)I applied the last of my makeup in the mirror while Tatum sat on my bed watching me. I glanced over at her and frowned.“Don’t you have anything better to do?” I asked, and she grinned.“Nope,” she said, “So when will we get to meet this guy?” she asked, wiggling her eyebrows.“Why would you meet him?” I asked, “I told you, it’s nothing serious. And even less serious now that we will be moving pretty soon,” Tatum pulled a face. She hated moving around more than the rest of us.“Tell me about it, I just want to put down some good roots you know,” she said with a sad look on her face, “I’m just hoping dad
(Jensen’s POV) The first thing that came to me as I woke up was her scent. I opened my eyes and saw her fast asleep on the pillow next to me and smiled. Her features were relaxed and peaceful on her milky skin, and her beautiful light red hair cascaded across the pillow behind her head. I laid there next to her, just watching her. I could honestly stay like this all day. After our argument last night, and Kaeleigh’s devastating revelation that she would be leaving town soon, I didn’t know how to feel. My original plan was to tell Kaeleigh that I was going to petition for her to join the pack. I knew that she wouldn’t be happy about that part. But she had blown up about it so much that I hadn’t got to the best part. Once she turned twenty-five, then I would have been able to ask to have her as my chosen mate. It was an old rule that we had to wait until
(Kaeleigh’s POV) “Oh my God!” The door to the bedroom had just burst open and the most amazing scent of oak and rainfall slammed into me, and through me, intoxicating me, and sending my mind into overdrive. Then I heard one word! “MINE!” And everything crashed into place. It was like suddenly a piece of me had been missing and I didn’t even know it was missing until now. I could have lived without knowing that piece, but now that I knew about it, there was no way I could consider an existence without it. I looked up at Jensen, who must have realised what was happening. “Oh, fuck!” he said and then he, and the covers, disappeared into a blur. I felt the chill of the lack of his warm body as I heard the crashing to t
(Chase’s POV) “Dammit!” I looked up and down the street, but she had already disappeared. I could try to chase after her, but I didn’t even see what direction she went in. I headed back inside and took the stairs two at a time. I needed to find out where she lived and I needed to get to her. I walked into the bedroom to see Jensen still sitting on the floor. I winced at the sight of the bruises, and his already swollen eye. Now that I wasn’t under the fog of a possessive jerk, I felt bad. I went to help him up when the image of him naked in bed with my mate flashed through my mind, and I growled without realising. “Whoa!” Jensen said, pulling his hand back. He glared at me and I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. It wasn’t helping. I was on edge. Not only seeing them together infuriated me.But now my mate was running around the goddess damn city unprotected. “Listen Chase, I didn’t know. You know that…” He trailed off
(Alpha Daniel’s POV)I nodded to my son as I saw the worried expression on his face. I knew he was concerned about the danger that his mate would be in if the wrong person found out about it. But for now we would have to put that to one side as we had more pressing, although strangely connected matters to deal with.Chase sat back in one of the chairs opposite me and Jensen glanced over at him from the other. I watched as Jensen nodded, obviously satisfied that his best friend, and soon to be his Alpha, was happy to put the matter of his mate to the side for now. He sat back himself, although winced and shifted in his chair.“After this, go get checked out at the hospital,” I ordered, and he glanced at Chase before nodding. I wasn’t too worried. As werewolves, we healed quickly and he would probably be back to full health in a couple of days, but if any bones were broken and healed out of place, they would nee
(Alpha Daniel’s POV)“What?” Chase exclaimed before turning to face me. I could see the concern etched on his face.“Dad!” he exclaimed, and I nodded and held up my hand.“Well, this just got more complicated,” I said and Alrik scoffed.“Complicated doesn’t cover it.” he said, and I glared at him before carrying on.“At least we know where to find her,” Seth offered, and I grimaced. At least there was that, but I knew that group. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t disappear at the first available chance, and then Chase would be frantic with worry. And rightly so, the poor girl wasn’t just in danger from the damn curse, but also whatever had been chasing her pack her whole life. “Wait,” Chase’s eyes suddenly lit up with excitement, “You’re saying Kaeleigh is from the Scarlet Circle pack?” and Jensen
(Chase’s POV)I left my dad’s office and headed up to the top floor to my room. I started to change my top but realised that the one I was wearing held my new mate’s scent. I wasn’t ready to let that go just yet. I checked in on my little sister, Ivy.“Hey,” I called as I knocked on the door. I opened it to see that she was alone and tapping away on her laptop.“What’s up?” she asked, pulling her headphones off. “Your meeting finished already?” I could tell by the bitter tone in her question. I knew she wanted more to do with pack business, but dad was very protective of her. He even declined her request for warrior training when she turned eighteen, which pissed her off for months. Dad was an old-fashioned Alpha and an Alpha’s daughter was the princess, and as such was treated as so. Even if she didn’t like it.“Yeah, for now,” I said. I

(Kaeleigh’s POV)*** Two Weeks Later ***I stood on the stage at the former Dark Moon and now Dark Circle pack territory and looked out across the crowd. I felt warmth rush through me as Chase squeezed my hand beside me as we waited for the crowd to quiet down. The crowd was a mix of werewolves, witches and hybrids, although the latter were massively outnumbered by the first two. The last two weeks had been crazy busy as we worked to create some sort of order in everything. The battle had ended in our favour, but we still had losses. I had been upset to learn from Jensen that Zack’s mate had been expecting and watching as she received the news that she had already felt was heart wrenching. I had been told that the death of her mate had sent her into shock. This wasn’t uncommon, as the separat
(Kaeleigh’s POV)I clung to Adam as I screamed for help. There was blood everywhere, and his eyes were fluttering. Dayna was crying.“Why can’t I do anything?” she screamed. “Adam I mean it, don’t you dare die on me, not when I have just told you I love you.” I looked up at her in shock and she looked at me, tears streaming.“Kaeleigh, tell him he can’t die. We agreed. We are choosing each other as mates. He has to live.” She shook Adam as his eyes closed. “Kaeleigh, order him, please,” I shook my head and looked down at Adam in my arms.“Why did you do something as stupid as that?” I cried at him and his eyelids fluttered open again. He looked up and smiled.
(Asher’s POV)“Well, look what we have here,” I snarled as I walked into the clearing. “If it isn’t my not so loyal Beta.” I had seen Cade just as he had snapped the neck of that imbecile Fischer. As I got closer, I saw him holding his mate. I watched them as he comforted her. He was so gentle and caring. Before her, Cade had been a different sort. He had always been ready for a good time with the supply of Omegas that we kept around and I could pinpoint to the day that he had met his mate. Everything changed. He stopped drinking as much, stopped going out. He disappeared on weekends on private business.I got why. A fated mate is an awful weapon in the wrong hands and my father had taken a dislike to Cade pretty much after his own father had left the pack. If my father had known that Cade had found his mate, he would h
(Zoey’s POV)“I gotta go,” I hissed, watching the blond streaks as they flashed through the woods. “I got a score to settle.” I started walking towards the last place that I saw the bleached blond trash. I could feel Cade’s presence behind me. I wasn’t sure whether he was there to protect me or to protect her at this point.I woke up crying almost every night after reoccurring dreams about what she did. Dreams that repeated over me held in silver chains and her smirking face as she… I shuddered at the thought of it. I had never been so violated before in my life. I still struggled with intimacy with Cade. The irony of the fact that for the first time in almost five years I could be open and not hide my love for my mate and yet I couldn’t stand to be touched by him. Cade had tried to talk to me about w
(Jensen’s POV)“My Hero,” Tatum grinned at me, and I couldn’t help but grin back.“Yeah, well, let’s not need that anymore,” I said as I helped her to a sitting position.“What about Jeremy?” Tatum asked and Elaina called over from where she was sitting next to the unconscious wolf.“He’s gonna be fine. It’ll take some healing, but werewolves do that quickly.” I looked at Tatum, who looked relieved.“Where’s Luke?” Tatum asked, looking around.“Your brother is as silly as you are,” the other witch, who I was unfamiliar with, said, glaring at the entrance to the n
(Tatum’s POV)I rushed into the entrance of the nook where I could see the evidence of magic flying around everywhere. I knew Jade and Luke were close behind. I surveyed the area and saw Chase on the ground next to a big black wolf and a woman with jet black hair. The woman was tending to the wolf as he laid on the floor, panting. At the other end of the nook I could see the redhead witch Isabella and my mum. There was a redheaded man standing between me and them and from the magic he was using, I could tell he was a sorcerer. I glanced at Luke, who nodded and he cast a slow down spell. While he did that, I felt for my new-found powers and sent out energy, or whatever it was, to the surrounding trees asking them for help. I felt the connection and began to bend the trees to my will.Jade appeared as well as Jeremy and I grinned. The sorcerer, on the
(Kaeleigh’s POV)“ATTACK!”I watched as thousands of bodies appeared from the surrounding area, some in human form, some in wolf. They reached the outer edges of the town in a matter of seconds, so they must have been in the immediate area and the woods surrounding. I drew my eyes back to Asher who was watching me with an intense look. He smirked as his eyes found mine and then pulled his shirt to reveal the mark again.I rolled my eyes before closing them and blocking everything and everyone around me out. I envisioned my army of wolves, the symbol of my Alpha power and the reason I would never bow to anyone. I pulled the energy from that power and pulled it in tight. The tension alone was enough to make me feel like I was going to burst. I opened my eyes, knowing that right now they shone g
(Kaeleigh’s POV)Three hours later, a now mobile and newly sealed Cade was sitting on the sofa in the living room with Zoey on his knee and I was inspecting Tatum’s wrist. She and Jensen had emerged from his room a few minutes before and Tatum was jumping around excitedly. They had completed the bond last night and through the night Tatum had completed the transition into a Hybrid, much in the same way as Chase had with me. I looked at the pattern that had formed on her wrist and saw it was an extension of Jensen’s pattern. I smiled. I still didn’t know how everything worked, but I was loving finding out.“Oh, and watch,” Tatum said, suddenly very excited. She turned and looked around and then focused on a dying houseplant that a scowling Luke was standing by. She walked over and placed her hand on the soil and, slowly
