091 | DREAM OF ME

Scarlett’s POV

It took me a long time to fall asleep, even though I was exhausted. Being stuck in that limbo between being awake and asleep reminded me vaguely of being in the coma, though the memories of that time were hazy and odd to me now. Had I been able to hear? Had I been stuck in my body, unmoving, as I was now?

I sighed and rolled over. The hut I’d been given was nice enough, if a little basic – just four walls constructed of stacked logs, with no windows, a single stooped door, and a bare-bones dirt floor, covered by a thin, well-worn rug that had seen better days. I had a bed, a crooked old thing with a moth-eaten mattress, but it was comfortable enough and the duvet was warm. There was even a dresser with a candle on it. No, my surroundings weren’t the problem. I was.

Eventually, though, my exhaustion pulled me under.

My dreams were as turbulent as my waking life. I felt as though I was drowning in syrup, unable to breathe, unable to swim up or down or even turn my head. I
