Enzo’s POV

I couldn’t find Marla anywhere. Eventually the guard came over, his ruddy face drawn, his crinkled eyes tired, and patted me on the shoulder. “I’ll bet she’s gone, my boy, and I couldn’t be more sorry for you. But she isn’t here. We’ve gone over every inch of the castle grounds, and there’s been neither hide nor hair of her. Other than my colleagues there’s not a soul in sight.”

I sagged under his kind touch. “I know. You’re right. I just hate feeling like I’m giving up on her.”

He squeezed my shoulder. “You aren’t. But there’s nothing else you or I can do for her right now. Get some rest, charge your phone, and see if she doesn’t show up come morning.”
