There are things in life that can’t be explained. Why me? Why do we live and go through all these horrific moments just to die at the end of it? My life seemed right on track. My father was the Alpha of our clowder, the lead Enforcer, a loving husband, a good Alpha and a great father.

On my tenth birthday Oracle Bloom appeared at the gifting ceremony, I would finally find out where my place in this world would be. I had prayed and prayed to be an Enforcer like my father, to successfully lead my people when my turn came. Only an Enforcer blessed by an Oracle could be the next Alpha and I wanted this more than I’d ever wanted anything in my life.

“Damon Woods, step forth child,” she said as her eyes glowed.

I took a step forward, my soul brimming with confidence. Tonight I would also be able to talk to my beast for the first time. My father looked at me proudly, he always looked at me proudly and I wanted to be him when I grew up.

Oracle Bloom touched my forehead and I felt something powerful flow through me. I had to close my eyes as forces unknown to me took over and I could feel it deep in my soul. Something was scratching just beneath the surface of my skin and I heard a powerful roar in my head.

“Alpha Coercitor,” she said after a few minutes of silence.

The clowder erupted into wild cheers and my smile couldn’t get any bigger. The Oracle’s eyes widened slightly and she quickly pulled her hand away from my forehead. The look on her face was one of foreboding and sadness as I felt the burn on my right wrist as the Enforcer mark was etched onto my skin.

“What else did you see Oracle?” Benjamin, my father, asked her.

“Alpha Woods, it cannot be revealed now or the choices he makes will not be his own,” she said and disappeared in a puff of smoke.

“Clowder members, I welcome Damon Woods, future Alpha and Enforcer of this pack!” my father said loudly as members congratulated me and I couldn’t be happier.

As I lay in bed that night I wondered what the Oracle meant, every person had some wisdom bestowed on them by her on their tenth birthday but mine couldn’t be revealed. It gave me a feeling of uneasiness and dread.

“Hello little one,” a voice in my head said.

“Hello,” I replied.

“My name is Axel and I will always be with you,” he said and I smiled as I closed my eyes.

A feeling of such contentment overcame me that I knew no matter what happened, I’d never be alone. When you’re ten you don’t want to be alone but fast forward a few years and the voice in your head can get pretty irritating especially if he’s like Axel, mocking and taunting me, sarcastic with a very dry sense of humour.

By the time I was sixteen, my father had been training me for six years. The stronger your body, the easier your first shift will be, it can be quite painful the first time. Imagine having every bone in your body break repeatedly while you suffer through fever and there’s absolutely nothing you can do.

My father and I were deep in the surrounding forest with the two Elders that resided in our clowder. They also had to witness my first shift to validate that I had indeed shifted on my sixteenth birthday and therefore could claim my father’s seat one day.

The shift took about two hours, which according to them was a new record for shifting so quickly for the first time. I don’t think I’d ever screamed so much in my life, as my father talked me through the process.

My shift was almost complete when a group of rogue wolves attacked the four of us. We were surrounded and my father had been so engrossed with my shift that he sensed the rogues too late. The attack spurred my shift on and before I knew it I was attacking wolves. My first instinct was to protect the Elders and just as suddenly as they appeared they turned and fled.

“Alpha Woods!” Elder Isaac yelled as I shifted back to my human form and knelt next to my father.

“Damon,” he whispered as he coughed up blood.

“Dad, no,” I said as I tried to pick him up.

“Just know that I love all of you,” he said as I held him in my arms and his body slumped against mine as he died.

The Elders stood behind me as I knelt over my father’s body and cried. The sudden guilt that hit me was like a truck speeding towards me and I was unable to move out of its way. If he hadn’t been so engrossed with helping me he would’ve been able to defend himself properly.

The Elders had linked Warrior Enforcers and they carried my father’s body back to the packhouse as I followed behind them, numb and unfeeling, guilt-ridden and afraid. My mother, Sara, had lost it. She was overcome with sadness and retreated back to her room and she didn’t come out for the next six months.

My sister, Kat, clung to me instead as our mother wasted away and it felt like I had lost both of my parents that night. My father’s funeral ceremony was a somber affair and even the heavens shared our pain as thunder crashed and the rain beat down on us mercilessly.

“We are gathered here today to give our last respects to Alpha Benjamin Woods, our Alpha Enforcer for the last twenty years. May he find peace in the afterlife and may his wisdom, kindness and gracious heart lead us forward,” Elder Isaac said as we stood around his coffin with our heads bowed.

My mother didn’t attend the funeral as she lay in her bed almost comatose like, refusing to eat or talk to anyone and I wasn’t sure what to do but I’d already spoken to the clowder doctor. If she didn’t snap out of it by Monday he would start feeding her through a tube.

We carried my father’s coffin to the waiting hearse, where he’d be taken to a crematorium to be cremated and then we’d put him to rest in our memorial wall where all our fallen clowder members were placed.

Two days after the funeral, two Council members together with the two Elders and an Oracle I’d never met before arrived at the packhouse and we gathered in the meeting room. Jared was there with me, he was my chosen Beta, it is something you just know, just like how you know who your Gamma will be and Connor was mine.

“Damon, thank you for receiving us,” Council member Carl Rathbone said.

“I received no request for a meeting so unfortunately I’m ill prepared for it,” I said to him.

“The request was sent to Beta Joshua,” Elder Isaac said.

“I see,” I said slowly starting to lose my temper. Since my father’s death the Elders had referred any and all clowder related things to him and not to me and now it was starting to piss me off.

“We’ve gathered here today to discuss Beta Joshua taking over as Alpha until you’ve reached the age of twenty-one when future Alphas normally take over from their predecessors,” Elder Isaac said.

“No,” I said as I looked at him daring him with my eyes. I was after all my father’s son and we stood back for no one.

“You’re sixteen years old Damon, you are not capable of leading this clowder,” Council member Carl said to me.

“What does it take to lead a clowder? Strength, wisdom, money?” I asked them.

“You are a child, this clowder needs a leader to lead them, being an Enforcer is more than just being the previous Alpha’s son,” Elder Isaac said and I slowly built up a hate for him that I knew would never go away.

“Joshua is a Beta, not an Alpha, I’m an Alpha and if anybody tries to take this position from me it will be over my dead body,” I said.

“I second that,” Jared said as he stood up and walked to stand right behind me, signifying his loyalty to me.

“Perhaps it should come down to a claim fight,” I said and the air around us changed as Oracle Bloom appeared looking furious.

“What is going on here?” she asked.

“I’m being ousted Oracle Bloom,” I said as I turned to look at her.

“Oracle Charles, what is the meaning of this?” she asked him.

“I am merely here as a witness to the proceedings,” he said.

“Elder Isaac, I have made my intentions for this boy clear. He is to be the Alpha of this clowder, and not when he turns twenty-one. Now. His father taught him well and I’ve seen what this clowder can be with him at the helm, you are also relieved of your duties Beta Joshua, I think retirement outside of this clowder will suit you well,” she said as she glared at them all.

“Thank you Oracle Bloom,” I said as I stood up. “Now that we have established that I’m the true Alpha, you may take your leave and consider the loyalties you showed here today because I won’t forget.”

Four years later… “You can’t cancel your own birthday celebration,” Jared said to me.“Why not?” I asked him. I wasn’t looking forward to it. I would be twenty-one soon and be able to meet my bonded half, or my mate, the one meant for me, the one that would calm my anger and soothe my troubles, the one made for me for eternity.“Firstly, you’ll give Elder Isaac just more ammunition against you and secondly, think of all the girls from sixteen to twenty who would be heartbroken if you did,” he said to me and I laughed at him.“I hate this,” I said to him.“I know but unfortunately this is how it works, you’re an Alpha so everything you do is public knowledge and cause for a celebration, especially if you find your mate on your birthday,” he said to me.“I don’t know if I’m ready for that, a lifetime commitment, settling down,” I said to him.“You don’t have a choice, that bond does the magic for you, once you meet her, you’ll want all those things,” he said.“Please don’t let her be s

“How long will you be gone?” Iris asked me as we stood in my bedroom.“A few days,” I said to her.“Will you miss me?” she asked with a sly smile.“Of course, will you miss me?” I asked her as I placed my arms around her waist.“Not even a little bit,” she said and chuckled as I pushed her backwards until her back met the wall.“Are you sure?” I asked her as I started kissing her.She pressed herself against me and I almost groaned at her teasing. We had another month to go before she turned eighteen and the past eleven months had been pure torture for me since she lived in the packhouse and I saw her all the time. Her scent was intoxicating and the need to spend time with her was just ridiculous. I took more and more assignments just to try and clear my head because I wasn’t sure how long I could keep my hands to myself.“Now I’m sure you’ll miss me,” she said as her hand strayed down my side and she lingered at the top of my jeans fiddling with the button.“You’re a bitch,” I whispe

I showered and dressed in jeans and another t-shirt for lunch and the inspection meeting afterwards. Jared was waiting for me in the hall and we entered the dining hall together as many heads turned towards us.“Good afternoon Alpha Damon, I’m Winston,” the young man said as he stood up and shook our hands.“You can call me Damon, how was your training?” I asked him as he led us back to the Alpha table.“Is that a trick question?” he asked me and laughed.“Who is in charge of training?” I asked him.“I am together with the Gamma, Bruce,” he said and nodded his head to a man sitting at the end of the Alpha table.“Your border guards are lax and unprepared for an attack,” I said to him as his eyes darkened.“They’ve reported the matter to me,” he said.“A suggestion if I may,” I said and looked at him.“Of course, that’s why you’re here right,” he said and I knew he didn’t like this. Alphas liked to think that they were mighty rulers and nobody could teach or tell them anything.“Border

I sent the Omega, whose name was Catherine, with Max who would take her to the Council for relocation and also inform them about our recommendations with regard to the pregnancy and the penalty I had already imposed.“You were very lenient today,” Jared remarked as I drove towards the next location on our list.“Not in the long run,” I said to him with a smile.“What do you mean? You gave him a pass,” Jared said.“Did I? He’s going to pay for the next eighteen years and if that baby’s a boy he can challenge Winston for the Alpha seat one day,” I said as Jared looked at me.“Do you think he realizes that?” he asked me.“Not yet,” I said“Are you going to tell the Omega that?” he asked me.“She has a name Jared. I will most definitely be seeing Catherine again and I might even extend her the courtesy of visiting our pack to train that baby if he’s a boy and reaches the age of ten,” I said to him.“You really don’t like this guy, do you?” he asked me.“Not in the slightest,” I said.“Nei

Two weeks later…We had visited almost all the assignments on our list and we had one last pack left to visit. We were tired and irritated and by now both Jared and I just wanted to go home. I had left Max and Justin with Catherine to help her get settled with the Council and help her choose a new pack.We were driving down a wooded lane but Axel suddenly flicked his tail and sat upright in my head. I caught their scent a moment later and I turned to Jared who had fallen asleep with his head against the window.“Jared,” I said loudly.“What?” he asked me with his eyes still closed.“I’m going to pull off in a clearing up ahead, get ready to shift, we’re being tailed by rogues on both sides of the forest,” I said to him.“Shit,” he said wide awake. It was seven pm at night and we were about five miles from the packhouse of the Goodwin pack. I had no idea why rogues were following us and if Goodwin’s pack had already been attacked. I took my shoes off as I kept driving and threw them on

Iris and Charlotte stood on the steps in front of the packhouse as Jared parked the car. Charlotte ran down the steps and into Jared’s arms as she hugged him tightly and he’d barely had a chance to get out of the car.I walked up the steps as I looked at Iris. Today was her eighteenth birthday and acceptance ceremony. She didn’t look like someone who hadn’t seen their bonded half in three weeks and I wondered if something had happened.“Happy Birthday Iris,” I whispered as I reached her and she finally smiled at me.“Welcome home Alpha,” she said and then she wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me hello. She followed me upstairs to my room where I unpacked my suitcase and then lay on my back on the bed next to where she was sitting. I was utterly exhausted and I knew Jared was too. We hadn’t slept much the last week as we rushed to finalize things to be back in time for tonight’s ceremony.“You should rest before tonight,” she said as she gave me a kiss on the cheek.“I’m plann

“Good morning Alpha,” Jared said as he breezed into my office looking a bit surprised to find me there. Usually newly mated couples didn’t leave their rooms for at least two days as they became acquainted with the strength of the bond.“Morning,” I said somewhat rudely to him. What happened wasn’t his fault, but Iris was his sister and I had to wonder if he knew about this other guy.“I’m surprised to find you in the office already working,” he said as he picked up the landline and ordered coffee for both of us.“Work waits for no man,” I said to him.“Damon… what’s going on?” he asked me.“Did you know?” I asked him. He was my best friend and I had to know the truth even if I had to make him submit.“Know what?” he asked me with a frown.“That your sister is in love with someone else,” I said to him.“Bullshit,” he said with a laugh.I kept quiet and just looked at him trying to read his emotions and the expression on his face which was one of disbelief. The following morning I felt like a different version of me, the me I used to be before imprinting on Iris and playing nice for a year just to be duped. I had a smile on my face as I got dressed and so far I had successfully ignored Iris’s phone calls and texts.I walked to the Council Headquarters again and this time the man behind the counter just waved me through and I took the elevator up to the nineteenth floor again. Natanya stood on the other side and welcomed me to the Council.“Good morning Alpha Woods, Miss Catherine is in Conference Room One awaiting your arrival,” she said like we hadn’t done a few inventive things the previous night.“Thank you Natanya,” I said as she showed me to the conference room.“Miss Catherine, Alpha Woods is here to see you,” she said as I followed her into the room. She gave me another smile and then left us alone. Catherine was standing by the windows looking out over the city of New York and I could tell she was very nervous.“Good morning Cath

I stood in the front of the ballroom as Connor grinned at me. Soft music was playing and the ballroom was packed to capacity. The doors opened and everyone turned simultaneously to catch a glimpse of her.Finley walked towards me as Archer held her hand and Griffin held her other hand. He had just started walking and his happiness was bubbling over. I couldn’t breathe properly as I looked at them, the two people that I loved the most in this world.“Members of the Woods Clowder, friends and guests, welcome to this auspicious occasion as our Alpha takes and acknowledges his true fated half for all to see. We gather here tonight to join these two in our sacred union by accepting each other as bonded halves for the rest of their lives,” Elder Matthews said as he welcome our guests and started the ceremony.Elder Matthews had been appointed as one of our Elders just a month ago and I was surprised that I really liked him as he proved his loyalty and his worth to all of us.“By joining you

DamonI couldn’t believe Finley let me mark her. The bond that had snapped in place was even stronger than the one we had previously shared and I woke up the following morning feeling like myself again. I had waited months for her to start treating me like a person again.I had loved her the first time before the bond and I loved her again the second time after I remembered her, all without the bond. I had been mean to her, but it was all to just keep her with me. I didn’t want her not to be in my life and the thought of her dating some other man nearly choked me as the pain ripped through me.I knew she was awake even though her back was to me. We were still in her bed and the sun would start making its appearance soon. I breathed her scent in as I placed my face in the crook of her neck and I felt her shudder.“What have we done?” she asked me softly.“What we should’ve done months ago,” I said.“We fight more than anything else,” she whispered.“Not really, we only fight when we’re

FinleyAfter our little confrontation in the kitchen Damon seemed to avoid me at all costs. We’d bump into each other during the night as we both got up for Griffin and I implemented a system where I’d get up for him before midnight and Damon would get up after midnight.I was mad at him but worse than that was that I was hurt. I understood his need to be a part of Griffin’s life but he had no right to interfere in mine. I just had one problem with everything that was going on, I still found him attractive and that infuriated me as well because I was sure the asshole knew it.He’d walk around the house with no shirt on and a few times he caught me staring at him. My feelings towards him varied between being in love and really hating him. Our routine consisted mostly of him cooking all the meals since he didn’t trust me in the kitchen and me doing things like the laundry.I had moved my laptop back down to the basement where I wrote in the past but I promised myself I wouldn’t give him

FinleyI didn’t dare call Archer again, knowing that Damon was there at the packhouse. My days spent with Griffin was absolute bliss. Every morning we went for a stroll in the park as I pushed him in his stroller and got to know the area better. Our house looked more lived in now and my house had been sold after being on the market for one day, above asking price. I didn’t care who bought it, I was just glad that Griffin and I had settled down now. I had phoned my friends and told them where I had settled down and they promised to come and visit soon.“Hi there,” a man said and I turned around as I looked at him.He was supernatural and I got the idea that he was feline but I couldn’t be sure. He obviously greeted me since he sensed that Griffin was feline too and that I was a familial.“Hi,” I said and looked around.“I’m sorry, it was just so odd finding a familial with a feline baby,” he said with a smile, “I’m Arthur.”“Finley,” I said as I shook his hand warily.“I won’t bite, I

DamonI watched Finley’s house for the rest of the night but she never came back. I continued to watch her house for the rest of that week and eventually I drifted off to sleep only to be tortured in my dreams. In the first dream she was straddling me, naked, as I held on to her hips. In a split second I was in the ocean looking back at her, then I was picking her up from the floor covered in blood, throwing her over my shoulder in a bar.In yet another dream I told her I loved her as we held hands and walked into the Council building in New York, the dreams were random and there were no order to them. I dreamt about my hearing but in this dream Finley was there as I was sentenced. In the last dream I had her pushed against a shower wall, her legs wrapped around me as my canines pushed into her shoulder and I marked her. I sat up straight in my bed as sweat covered my forehead and Axel growled in my head.“She’s our bonded half,” he said as the memories he had stored flooded through m

DamonIt felt odd talking to Finley and for some reason I actually talked to her, normally I didn’t really like other people but she was easy to talk to and I guess it helped that she already knew what I was. I kept myself busy with stripping the inside of the house and starting with one room at a time, retiling, painting and so forth.I sat and waited for her to go on her afternoon walk but she didn’t leave the house for the rest of the week and I wondered what she did all day.
